Financial Services Innovation: Local Strategy, Management, And Change – A Field Investigation, Ann-Catherine Nave Dec 2012

Financial Services Innovation: Local Strategy, Management, And Change – A Field Investigation, Ann-Catherine Nave

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This study examines the innovation sources and processes of regional financial services firms through inductive field research. Innovation in these firms, and presumably other financial services firms and other smaller organizations, originate primarily out of three sources, the drive for efficiency, the external environment, and strategic, ambidextrous management. Successfully innovative firms balance the short-term need for efficiency improvements with the long-term desire to grow primarily through visionary, yet adaptive, leadership.

Beat Consumption: The Challenge To Consumerism In Beat Literature, Amien Essif Dec 2012

Beat Consumption: The Challenge To Consumerism In Beat Literature, Amien Essif

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

Critics of the Beat generation, from their contemporaries to the present day, often contend that the Beats’ opposition to consumer culture was superficial. Writers like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs failed, according to these critics, to present a coherent and principled response to consumerism. This paper, however, argues that while in many ways the Beats continued to participate in consumer culture, they developed a distinct form of consumption—Beat consumption—which attempted to regain sovereignty for the Beat consumer. Through an analysis of Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums and On the Road as well as several of Ginsberg’s seminal works, …

Information Content Of Seasonal Forecasts In A Changing Climate, Nir Krakauer, Michael D. Grossberg, Irina Gladkova, Hannah Aizenman Dec 2012

Information Content Of Seasonal Forecasts In A Changing Climate, Nir Krakauer, Michael D. Grossberg, Irina Gladkova, Hannah Aizenman

Publications and Research

We study the potential value to stakeholders of probabilistic long-term forecasts, as quantified by the mean information gain of the forecast compared to climatology. We use as a case study the USA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) forecasts of 3-month temperature and precipitation anomalies made at 0.5-month lead time since 1995. Mean information gain was positive but low (about 2% and 0.5% of the maximum possible for temperature and precipitation forecasts, resp.) and has not increased over time. Information-based skill scores showed similar patterns to other, non-information-based, skill scores commonly used for evaluating seasonal forecasts but tended to be smaller, suggesting …

Use Of International Hydrographic Organization Tidal Data For Improved Tidal Prediction, Songwei Qi Dec 2012

Use Of International Hydrographic Organization Tidal Data For Improved Tidal Prediction, Songwei Qi

Dissertations and Theses

Tides are the rise and fall of water level caused by gravitational forces exerted by the sun, moon and earth. Understanding sea level variation and its impact currents is very important especially in coastal regions. With knowledge of the tide-generating force and boundary conditions, hydrodynamic models can be used to predict or model tides in coastal regions. However, these models are not sufficiently accurate, and in-situ tide gauge data may be used to improve them in coastal regions. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) tidal data bank consists of over 4000 tide gauge stations scattered all around the globe, most of …

Modeling And Characterization Of Power Distribution Networks With Installed Distributed Generation And Connected Phevs, Santhosh Basineni Dec 2012

Modeling And Characterization Of Power Distribution Networks With Installed Distributed Generation And Connected Phevs, Santhosh Basineni

Electrical Engineering Theses

This thesis is focused on the modeling and characterization of power distribution networks with installed distributed generation and connected plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). A PHEV charging/discharging (bidirectional) model has been developed in MATLAB®-Simulink. Installed photovoltaic systems with varying irradiance rates are modeled and characterized. Moreover, installed wind generators with varying wind speeds are modeled and characterized. Furthermore, the charging and discharging characteristics of connected PHEV are determined. The system characteristics are determined and investigated against the PHEV battery state of charge (SOC).

Completion Of Hankel Partial Contractions Of Extremal Type, Raúl E. Curto, Sang Hoon Lee, Jasang Yoon Dec 2012

Completion Of Hankel Partial Contractions Of Extremal Type, Raúl E. Curto, Sang Hoon Lee, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We find concrete necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of contractive completions of Hankel partial contractions of size 4 × 4 in the extremal case. Along the way we introduce a new approach that allows us to solve, algorithmically, the contractive completion problem for 4 × 4 Hankel matrices. As an application, we obtain a concrete example of a partially contractive 4 × 4 Hankel matrix, which does not admit a contractive completion.

High Rollers From Mainland China: A Profile Based On 99 Cases, Zhonglu Zeng, David Forrest Dec 2012

High Rollers From Mainland China: A Profile Based On 99 Cases, Zhonglu Zeng, David Forrest

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Macao's casinos win a high proportion of their revenue from high rollers from Mainland China but some of these generate social problems back home. We analyze 99 cases of high rollers whose activities came to media attention, building a profile of them based on information in the reports. They were mainly from areas near Macao or from particularly rich regions of China. Most were male, aged 30- 49. They tended to be government officials, managers of state-owned businesses or owners of private enterprises. They lost as much as US$12.08 million on a single trip. Their average accumulated loss amounted to …

Influence Of Personal Factors On Macau Residents' Gaming Impact Perceptions, Fanny Vong

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper explores the influence of personal factors on gaming impact perceptions using Macau, China as a case study. The objective is to examine how residents' gaming perceptions were affected by (1) personal benefits received from gaming; (2) length of residence; and (3) demographic characteristics. The study also aims to assess the relative magnitude of influence exerted by each variable on gaming impact perceptions. All personal factors were found to contribute to differences in gaming impact perceptions among sub-groups of respondents. Regression analyses revealed that age, education and residence status had influence on gaming impact perceptions. Findings support that the …

Simulating The Effect Of Pay Table Standard Deviation On Pulls Per Losing Player At The Single-Visit Level, Anthony F. Lucas, Ashok K. Singh, Laxmi P. Gewali Dec 2012

Simulating The Effect Of Pay Table Standard Deviation On Pulls Per Losing Player At The Single-Visit Level, Anthony F. Lucas, Ashok K. Singh, Laxmi P. Gewali

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

While holding par constant, changes in the standard deviation of the pay table produced an inverse effect on pulls per losing player (PPLP), across six different virtual slot machines. This result establishes the standard deviation of a game as a crucial determinant of a slot player's experience. Three different single-trip scenarios were examined via computer simulation, with 50,000 players engaging each game. For example, virtual players began with 100 units, terminating play at bankruptcy or 200 units. As players focus on the outcome of single visits, understanding the determinants of PPLP (or time on device) will help management engineer desirable …

An Examination Of Mississippi Gulf Coast Casino Management Styles With Implications For Employee Turnover, Jerome Agrusa, Joseph D. Lema

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of casino employees on management styles and the relationship of these perceptions on the employee turnover rate. The sample consisted of a balanced representation of supervisory and nonsupervisory employees. Supervisors tended to perceive themselves and their managerial style in a much move favorable light than did their employees. Future research should continue to address issues of employee retention in the casino industry and adopt strategies that can retain valuable employees while reducing employee turnover costs. Human resource development processes should support managerial styles that facilitate collaborative decision making and participative …

"Smart" Change In Strategy: Ibm‘S Response To Challenging Times, Elizabeth Gingerich

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

International Business Machines, or IBM, has been an indisputable force in the communications industry, leading the world into the modern, global technological age. Currently, IBM has revamped its business paradigm, allocating the majority of its resources to consulting work and data analyses rather than manufacturing as it had done so in the past — for the primary objectives of optimizing existing assets, resolving problems of burgeoning cities and beleaguered governments, and enhancing peoples‘ lives in a sustainable way.
