Sequential Isolation Of Saturated, Aromatic, Resinic, And Asphaltic Fractions Degrading Bacteria From Oil Contaminated Soil In South Sumatera, Munawar Munawar, Pingkan Aditiawati, Dea Indriani Astuti
Makara Journal of Science
Sequential isolation has been conducted to obtain isolates of saturated, aromatic, resin, and asphaltene fractions degrading bacteria from oil contaminated sites. Five soil samples were collected from South Sumatera. These bacterial isolates were obtained using soil extract medium enriched with oil recovery or remaining-oil recovery degradated (ROD) as sole carbon and energy sources according to the isolation stage as the isolation medium. ROD at the end of every isolation stage analyzed oil fractions by use of the SARA analysis method. Six isolates of bacteria have been selected, one isolate was fraction saturates degrading bacteria that are Mycobacterium sp. T1H2D4-7 at …

Enabling Unity Of Effort In Homeland Response Operations, Kerry Mcintyre Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.), H Steven Blum Lieutenant General (Ret.)
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Any significant homeland response event requires Americans to work together. This is a complex challenge. The authors assert that the principal obstacle to effective homeland response is a recurring failure to achieve unity of effort across a diverse and often chaotic mix of participating federal, state, and local government and nongovernmental organizations. Despite a decade of planning since the terror attacks of September 2001, unity of effort still eludes us—particularly in the largest and most dangerous of crises. The authors examine how the military’s joint doctrine system affected joint military operational capabilities, concluding that a similar national homeland response doctrinal …

Community Variation Of Gastrointestinal Parasites Found In Urban And Rural Coyotes (Canis Latrans) Of Calgary, Alberta, Alexander G. Watts, Shelley M. Alexander
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
We compared parasite variation in coyote feces collected in eight urban sites within Calgary, Alberta, to those in six rural sites outside the city limits. Four hundred and sixty fresh fecal samples (< 4 days old) were collected weekly between July 2009 and June 2010. Fecal flotation analysis identified parasites to the level of genus. We calculated parasite richness, diversity, and evenness. Parasite richness was significantly greater in rural than urban sites. Disparities in the parasite community included a significant variation in parasite richness, diversity, and evenness among rural and urban sites. Toxascaris leonina and Cystoisospora spp. were shared among all urban sites, while these species in addition to Taenia-like spp. and Trichuris spp. were shared among all rural sites. Both urban and rural sites yielded evidence of Toxocara canis, Taenia-like spp., and Giardia spp., which are potential zoonotic parasites. Toxocara canis was at highest prevalence in a core urban site, Inglewood Wildlands, which exhibits unique …

Keeping The Balance: The Role Of The Serotonin Subtype 1a Receptor In Regulating Cortisol Secretion In The Gulf Toadfish (Opsanus Beta), Lea R. Medeiros
Open Access Dissertations
It is well established that serotonin (5-HT; 5-hydroxytryptamine) plays a role in regulating the mammalian hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis via the 5-HT receptor subtype 1A (5-HT1A). To date, there has not been a comprehensive investigation of the molecular, pharmacological and physiological aspects of the 5-HT1A receptor and its role in the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis in a single species of teleost fish. The Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) 5-HT1A receptor was cloned and sequenced, showing 67.5% amino acid similarity to the human homologue. The 5-HT1A receptor was distributed throughout the brain, with the midbrain/diencephalon region containing significantly higher transcript levels …

Pediatric Voice: Delineating The Voice Science And Investigating Child Training Methods Toward Pedagogical Application, Maria Fenty Denison
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigates the synergistic relationship between voice science and voice pedagogy to inform the practices of voice teachers, music educators, and voice trainers. Furthermore, it is an effort to augment existing knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the pediatric voice so voice professionals may design targeted curricula in pediatric pedagogy. The most current materials in voice science and voice pedagogy were reviewed and relevant findings connecting both fields of study delineated. In the field of voice science, research concerning the progression of the vocal mechanism from fetus through adolescence was evaluated to clarify physiological findings potentially relevant to …

Robust Self-Replication Of Combinatorial Information Via Crystal Growth And Scission, Rebecca Schulman, Bernard Yurke, Erik Winfree
Robust Self-Replication Of Combinatorial Information Via Crystal Growth And Scission, Rebecca Schulman, Bernard Yurke, Erik Winfree
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Understanding how a simple chemical system can accurately replicate combinatorial information, such as a sequence, is an important question for both the study of life in the universe and for the development of evolutionary molecular design techniques. During biological sequence replication, a nucleic acid polymer serves as a template for the enzyme-catalyzed assembly of a complementary sequence. Enzymes then separate the template and complement before the next round of replication. Attempts to understand how replication could occur more simply, such as without enzymes, have largely focused on developing minimal versions of this replication process. Here we describe how a different …

Decision-Making Following Sexual Assault: Reporting Decisions And Exposure To The Criminal Justice System, Ryan Michael Walsh
Decision-Making Following Sexual Assault: Reporting Decisions And Exposure To The Criminal Justice System, Ryan Michael Walsh
Dissertations
Violent crimes represent significant costs to society and survivors; costs which include mental health conditions which may emerge afterward. Victims of sexual assault are at particularly heightened risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Breslau, Davis, Andreski, & Peterson, 1991). Although Crime Victims’ Compensation (CVC) is available to assist with healthcare costs for some individuals who report the event to police (NACVCB, 2009), many crimes are not reported. Theories of crime-reporting behavior suggest that victims decide whether to report crimes to police through the use of a “cost-benefit analysis” (Gottfredson & Gottfredson, 1988, p. 25). Little research, however, has been …
