Remove To Recruit: The Short-Term Efficacy Of Invasive Shrub Removal In A Minnesota Floodplain Forest, Claire S. Wiley Apr 2026

Remove To Recruit: The Short-Term Efficacy Of Invasive Shrub Removal In A Minnesota Floodplain Forest, Claire S. Wiley

Biology Honors Projects

Within Midwest floodplain forests, there is a lack of long-term studies focusing on native tree recruitment post invasive shrub removal. With interacting threats such as emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), invasive earthworms, and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), land managers need particular information about these ecosystems in order to better understand how to protect them. This study aims to explore the efficacy of the removal of Rhamnus cathartica and Lonicera spp. in promoting native tree recruitment within a Minnesota floodplain forest along the Mississippi River. Results revealed that post removal ash (Fraxinus spp.) seedling abundance …

The Highs And Lows Of Life In A Valley: Topographic Controls On Tundra Vegetation In A Warming Arctic, Ruth S. Dunlap Apr 2026

The Highs And Lows Of Life In A Valley: Topographic Controls On Tundra Vegetation In A Warming Arctic, Ruth S. Dunlap

Biology Honors Projects

Topographic heterogeneity structures Arctic plant communities, impacting broader ecosystem responses to climate change. The role of topography in shaping leaf physiological, nutritional, and structural traits in the Arctic is important, yet not well characterized across diverse tundra landscapes. To address these controls, we examined plant community composition and measured leaf traits in a few representative species along a heath-slope-valley gradient in Varanger, Norway. Our results indicated that valleys are more biodiverse, driven by forb and graminoid dominance, whereas slopes and heaths had less diversity with high shrub abundance. Leaf physiology and structural traits did not vary across topographic positions, though …

Multivariate Analysis Of Ecological Diversity In Asian Rodentia In The Context Of Tectonism And Environmental Change, Amanda Peng, Samantha S.B. Hopkins

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The Asian continent is unique for its exceptional biodiversity and position as a biogeographic crossroads, resulting in considerable taxonomic, ecological, and morphological diversity. Asia is also notable for its complex geological and climatic history stemming from the collision of Eurasia with the Indian subcontinent, resulting in uplift of the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau, which have gone on to influence local and global climatic change over millions of years. The effects of these events on biotic assemblages have not been comprehensively investigated, and consequences for mammalian assemblages are unclear. Asian biodiversity is preserved in a rich and well-studied Cenozoic fossil mammal …

Unpacking Developmental Programming: A Conceptual And Historical Analysis In The Context Of Dohad, Andrea Gretchev, Heide S. Temples, Gillian England-Mason, Deborah Dewey, Sara M. Sarasua, Christopher Farrell, Vivian Haley-Zitlin

Publications

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm posits that early environmental factors may influence a child’s development and long-term health outcomes. Developmental programming (DP) is central to this paradigm, whereby specific early life exposures during critical periods of development are associated with changes to physiological and metabolic pathways, potentially predisposing individuals to disease. However, no standard definition of DP exists, and various terms have been used to describe similar processes. This analysis aimed to develop a conceptual definition for DP to inform interdisciplinary research, education, and practice. Walker and Avant’s eight-step method was employed to analyze the literature, …

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Headache disorders are among the most disabling neurological conditions, affecting over 1.5 billion people globally. Despite advances in pharmacological therapies, major inequities persist due to underdiagnosis, undertreatment and limited access to effective care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Social determinants of health, including cultural meanings, language and health beliefs, are increasingly recognized as key drivers of disparities in burden, diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Traditional medicine, used by more than 80% of the global population, remains first-line care in many regions and continues to influence therapeutic choices in high-income settings. Major systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Unani and …

Sensitivity Of Headwater Carbon Storage To Climate Change, Maddie Benello Apr 2026

Sensitivity Of Headwater Carbon Storage To Climate Change, Maddie Benello

Earth Sciences Undergraduate Senior Theses

Headwater streams play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, serving as significant sites of carbon storage. While there have been recent efforts to quantify carbon storage in headwater streams in the western United States, there remains limited understanding of both the volume and timescale of carbon storage in northeastern forests which often have extensive logging and agricultural histories. Here, we quantify the carbon stock, residence time, and flux of a zero-to-first order headwater stream in Charles Downer State Forest (DF), VT using novel fallout radionuclide (FRN) chronometry. We find DF headwaters have a carbon stock of 66.2 Mg …

A Computational Assessment Of Halobacterium Salinarum Glutamate Dehydrogenase Enzymes, Maaz Abdalla Apr 2026

A Computational Assessment Of Halobacterium Salinarum Glutamate Dehydrogenase Enzymes, Maaz Abdalla

Theses

Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) is a hexameric enzyme. GDH is involved in several pathways and cellular processes such as oxidation-reduction homeostasis, ammonia metabolism, lipid biosynthesis, insulin and lactate production, and acid-base equilibrium. The main objective of this thesis is to understand the structural and biochemical properties of this enzyme and why some organisms, for e.g., Halobacterium salinarum, have more than one GDH with different coenzyme specificities. The catabolism of glutamate is linked to NAD+ specific GDHs, meanwhile, NADP+ specific GDHs play an anabolic role in ammonia assimilation. Molecular docking and binding free energy calculations were employed followed by long-scale (500 nanoseconds) …

Comparative Evaluation Of Five Bacterial Strains For The Fermentation Of Camel Milk, Sifatun Nesa Ali Apr 2026

Comparative Evaluation Of Five Bacterial Strains For The Fermentation Of Camel Milk, Sifatun Nesa Ali

Theses

In this study, the comparative fermentation performance of lactic acid bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Lb. helveticus, Lb. casei, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in Camel Milk (CM) and Bovine Milk (BM) was investigated. Fermentations were carried out at 42°C for 48 hours, and was monitored through bacterial growth, titratable acidity, pH evolution, proteolytic activity, microstructural properties, and rheological characteristics. Although comparable bacterial viability was observed in CM and BM, acidification kinetics varied significantly between CM and BM (p < 0.05). Proteolysis was significantly higher in fermented CM than in BM (p < 0.001), with consistently greater o-Phthalaldehyde Assay (OPA) values in CM across all strains during fermentation (p < 0.001). Scanning electron microscopy revealed more porous, loose protein matrices in fermented CM than in BM, which supports the rheological results showing weaker gel networks and lower rheological strength in fermented CM. Among the tested bacteria, Lb. casei demonstrated superior adaptability, enhanced viability, balanced acidification, and favorable rheological properties in both milks. Overall, the results of this thesis demonstrate strain-specific fermentation responses and support the possible suitability of different starter cultures for improving the technological performance of fermented camel milk products.

Breath-Based Detection Of Liver Cancer Biomarkers Using An Swcnt-Fet Nano-Biosensor: Quantumatk, Mohamed Mohieb Rashdan Apr 2026

Breath-Based Detection Of Liver Cancer Biomarkers Using An Swcnt-Fet Nano-Biosensor: Quantumatk, Mohamed Mohieb Rashdan

Theses

Early detection of liver cancer remains limited by the slow pace and invasiveness of current testing methods. This study proposes a single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (SWCNT-FET) designed to detect hexanal—a volatile organic compound (VOC) elevated in liver cancer—directly from exhaled breath. The device is modeled in QuantumATK using a semi-empirical Extended Hückel Hamiltonian within the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, emphasizing realistic contact physics by employing metallic SWCNT electrodes instead of conventional metal films. Zigzag channels with (11,0) and (12,0) chiralities are examined to analyze how geometry and contact matching influence charge transport. Simulations include current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ42) senile plaques in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although some drug have been approvaled recently, none has demonstrated robust disease-modifying outcome. The 3-deoxyanthocyanidins (3-DXA) and their derivatives represent a more stable class of polyphenols, present at uniquely high concentrations in sorghum grains. Although 3-DXA exhibit strong potential to modulate protein aggregation processes, their effects on AD pathology remain unexplored. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of three 3-DXA derivatives, apigeninidin chloride (AC), luteolinidin chloride (LC), and 7-methoxy apigeninidin (7-MAC), on Aβ42 aggregation and associated neurotoxicity. Thioflavin T fluorescence assay was …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Climate change stress in forested ecosystems globally has led to die-off events, and management actions are needed to help mitigate these pressures. Forest thinning has been proposed to reduce competition for moisture between trees, however, the effects of forest thinning on lesser-studied organisms, such as soil microbial communities, need quantification. Soil microbial communities are essential for processes such as nutrient cycling and can be used as indicators of below-ground health and as an overall proxy for biodiversity. This study examined soil microbial communities, and site and soil characteristics, directly at the base of trees and in inter-tree spaces in a …
