Mesenchymal Stem Cells Secrete Multiple Cytokines That Promote Angiogenesis And Have Contrasting Effects On Chemotaxis And Apoptosis, Robert Boomsma, David Geenen
Mesenchymal Stem Cells Secrete Multiple Cytokines That Promote Angiogenesis And Have Contrasting Effects On Chemotaxis And Apoptosis, Robert Boomsma, David Geenen
Peer Reviewed Articles
We have previously shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) improve function upon integration in ischemic myocardium. We examined whether specific cytokines and growth factors produced by MSCs are able to affect angiogenesis, cellular migration and apoptosis. Conditioned media (CM) was prepared by culturing MSC for 48 hours. CM displayed significantly elevated levels of VEGF, Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), macrophage inflammatory protein-1a (MIP-1a), MIP- 1b and monokine induced by IFN-c (MIG) compared to control media. MSC contained RNA for these factors as detected by RT-PCR. CM was able to induce angiogenesis in canine vascular endothelial cells. MCP-1 and MIP-1a increased cell …
Discovering Aristotle: An Examination Of His Life And The Development Of His Immutable Brilliance, Timothy H. Sparling
Discovering Aristotle: An Examination Of His Life And The Development Of His Immutable Brilliance, Timothy H. Sparling
Honors Theses
A synoptic piece which addresses the life of Aristotle and analyzes the development of his philosophical thought, Discovering Aristotle: An Examination of his Life and the Development of his Immutable Brilliance reviews multiple facets of this thinker's being, ranging from his genealogy to his pedagogical and theoretical contributions, and serves as a standard of measurement through which his vast works may be studied, thus granting his "exoteric" or early works with a certain preponderance in the text itself. Additionally, a respectable number of appendices, which are extremely relevant to Aristotle's world, are also included in the work; these provide the …

Terrestrial Vertebrate Families On Noah's Ark, Seth J. Beech
Terrestrial Vertebrate Families On Noah's Ark, Seth J. Beech
Senior Honors Theses
One of the central challenges faced by young-Earth creation researchers who believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God is defending the Biblical claim that two of every kind of nephesh animal was saved from the great flood on Noah’s ark. Recently, Answers in Genesis became involved in the design and construction of a full-sized, authentic replica of Noah’s ark. They have endeavored to be as accurate as possible in presenting the number of kinds that would have needed to be on the ark in order to have the diversity in species that we observe today. In order …
Parkinson’S Disease: Molecular Mechanisms And Treatments, Delia Vahey
Parkinson’S Disease: Molecular Mechanisms And Treatments, Delia Vahey
Senior Honors Theses
Parkinson’s disease is a motor system disorder that is caused primarily by the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The most affected brain structure is the pars compacta of the substantia nigra. This area of the brain is essential to the control of voluntary movement, and so its impairment leads to symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, and impaired balance. The neuronal protein alpha-synuclein has been shown to be heavily involved in the pathogenesis of the disease at the cellular level. The currently available treatments for PD mainly target dopamine regulation, and there been no cure developed for the disease at present. …

Uterine Epithelial Cells Specifically Induce Interferon-Stimulated Genes In Response To Polyinosinic-Polycytidylic Acid Independently Of Estradiol, Mickey V. Patel, Mimi Ghosh, John V. Fahey, Charles R. Wira
Dartmouth Scholarship
Interferon β (IFNβ) is an antiviral cytokine secreted in response to pathogenic exposure that creates a restrictive intracellular environment through the action of downstream interferon-stimulated genes (ISG). The objective of this study was to examine the expression of IFNβ and ISG in both human uterine epithelial cells (UEC) and the ECC-1 uterine epithelial cell line and determine if expression changes with TLR stimulation and hormone exposure. Stimulation of primary uterine epithelial cells and ECC-1 cells with the TLR3 agonist poly (I∶C) induced the mRNA expression of IFNβ, MxA, OAS2 and PKR. Other TLR agonists including imiquimod and CpG had no …

Accumulation And Rapid Decay Of Non-Ltr Retrotransposons In The Genome Of The Three-Spine Stickleback, Eryn Blass, Michael Bell, Stéphane Boissinot
Publications and Research
The diversity and abundance of non–long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons (nLTR-RT) differ drastically among vertebrate genomes. At one extreme, the genome of placental mammals is littered with hundreds of thousands of copies resulting from the activity of a single clade of nLTR-RT, the L1 clade. In contrast, fish genomes contain a much more diverse repertoire of nLTR-RT, represented by numerous active clades and families. Yet, the number of nLTR-RT copies in teleostean fish is two orders of magnitude smaller than in mammals. The vast majority of insertions appear to be very recent, suggesting that nLTR-RT do not accumulate in fish …

Associations Between Binge Eating And Executive Functioning Among Young Women, Nichole Kelly
Associations Between Binge Eating And Executive Functioning Among Young Women, Nichole Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
Binge eating is a pervasive disordered eating behavior associated with numerous psychological and physical comorbidities. Preliminary research indicates that emotion regulation difficulties, behavioral impulsivity, and executive dysfunction may contribute to the onset and/or maintenance of these behaviors. However, few studies have utilized neuropsychological measures to examine this link, and the assessment of behavioral and cognitive emotion regulation strategies are limited in scope. The purpose of the current study was to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional, behavioral and cognitive processes associated with binge eating behavior. Greater clarity regarding how these factors relate to binge eating is critical to the …
Compliance-Free Class Ii Correction And Its Relationship To Vertical Facial Characteristics, Michael Shoff
Compliance-Free Class Ii Correction And Its Relationship To Vertical Facial Characteristics, Michael Shoff
Theses and Dissertations
Background: While efficacy of the Forsus appliance has been shown, there are disagreements on its mechanism for Class II correction. Class II studies have been criticized for ignoring potential differences in results based on differing vertical facial phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to better understand the effects of Class II correction using the Forsus appliance and relate changes during and at the completion of treatment to initial MP-SN angles. Materials and Methods: Records of 59 patients obtained at 4 different time points were examined retrospectively. ANOVA was used to describe the cephalometric changes and Pearson’s correlation tested for …

Self-Assembly And Hydrogelation Of Peptide Amphiphiles, Irwansyah Irwansyah, Riwandi Sihombing, Wahyudi Wahyudi Suwarso
Makara Journal of Science
Seven peptide amphiphiles were successfully synthesized using solid phase peptide synthesis method. Peptide amphiphiles were characterized using Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MALDI-TOF MS). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) study showed that peptide amphiphiles having glycine, valine, or proline as linker, self-assembled into 100-200 nm nanofibers structure. According to our research, both peptide amphiphile with positive and negative charges bear similar self-assembly properties. Peptide amphiphile also showed its capability as low molecular weight gelator (LMWG). Peptide amphiphiles bearing C-16 and C-12 as alkyl showed better hydrogelation properties than C-8 alkyl. Five out of seven peptide amphiphiles have minimum gelation concentration …
Cultivation Of Uncultured Bacteria Of The Class Ktedonobacteria In The Phylum Chloroflexi, Akira Yokota
Cultivation Of Uncultured Bacteria Of The Class Ktedonobacteria In The Phylum Chloroflexi, Akira Yokota
Makara Journal of Science
The class Ktedonobacteria in the phylum Chloroflexi is known to contain a large number of uncultured, environmental 16S rRNA gene clones, and cultured representatives are a limited number. In this review, recent findings on the taxonomical and ecological significance of the class Ktedonobacteria in the phylum Chloroflexi are discussed based on the findings from both the characteristics of the cultured Ktedonobacteria and molecular-based analysis. The microorganisms characterized so far include four species in three genera, Ktedonobacter, Thermosporothrix and Thermogemmatispora, and were proposed to represent three families, Ktedonobacteraceae, Thermosporotricaceae, and Thermogemmatisporaceae, and two orders, Ktedonobacterales and Thermogemmatisporales. Ktedonobacteria strains showed a …
