Heterotopic Ossification: Cellular Basis, Symptoms, And Treatment, Brian Wolfe Apr 2012

Heterotopic Ossification: Cellular Basis, Symptoms, And Treatment, Brian Wolfe

Senior Honors Theses

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the process by which calcified bone develops in soft tissues. Because of the abnormal calcification, complications such as bone deformation, loss of range of motion, and joint immobility adversely affect patients. There are many genetic types of heterotopic ossification, namely fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, progressive osseous heteroplasia, and Albright hereditary osteodystrophy. However, this condition can also arise from surgery, burns, or traumatic injuries, so it is seen as an important area for research in the future. There are various treatments available such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and radiation therapy, as well as combinations of the two. The …

Spatio-Temporal Differentiation And Sociality In Spiders, Jessica Purcell, João Vasconcellos-Neto, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Marcelo O. Gonzaga, Leticia Avilés Apr 2012

Spatio-Temporal Differentiation And Sociality In Spiders, Jessica Purcell, João Vasconcellos-Neto, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Marcelo O. Gonzaga, Leticia Avilés

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Species that differ in their social system, and thus in traits such as group size and dispersal timing, may differ in their use of resources along spatial, temporal, or dietary dimensions. The role of sociality in creating differences in habitat use is best explored by studying closely related species or socially polymorphic species that differ in their social system, but share a common environment. Here we investigate whether five sympatric Anelosimus spider species that range from nearly solitary to highly social differ in their use of space and in their phenology as a function of their social system. By studying …

Sex Determination, Tony Gamble Apr 2012

Sex Determination, Tony Gamble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Multicellular animals are a diverse lot, with widely varied body plans and lifestyles. One feature they share, however, is a nearly universal reliance on sexual reproduction for species propagation. Humans have long been fascinated by human sex differences and formal theories on how human sex is determined date at least to Aristotle (in De Generatione Animalium, ca. 335 BCE). However, it is only in the past couple of decades that the genetic and molecular programs responsible for generating the two sexes have been understood in any detail. Sex, it turns out, can be established by many very different and …

Spontaneous Recovery In Children With Expressive Language Delay, Jaimie Sierakowski Apr 2012

Spontaneous Recovery In Children With Expressive Language Delay, Jaimie Sierakowski

Honors Theses

By age 2, most children have an expressive vocabulary of approximately 200 words and begin to combine these words into meaningful phrases. However, some children acquire expressive language skills more slowly than others while displaying no signs of cognitive, receptive, or sensory delays. These children who experience an expressive language delay are often characterized in the literature as late talkers. Research shows that many of these children have delays early in childhood, but eventually catch up to their typically-developing peers, with no need for language intervention. Others, however, continue to experience expressive delays and. have an increased risk of developing …

Supportive Housing For Families In Child Welfare: Client Characteristics And Risk Factors At Intake, Kellie G. Randall Apr 2012

Supportive Housing For Families In Child Welfare: Client Characteristics And Risk Factors At Intake, Kellie G. Randall

Master's Theses

Many families involved in the child welfare system also face housing difficulties. Housing problems can disrupt family preservation efforts and delay reunifications from foster care. Supportive housing programs work with families who have dual vulnerabilities in housing and child welfare to integrate services and improve outcomes. Families in these programs might face barriers in addition to their housing and child welfare needs, but little is known about other risk factors in this population. This study uses a sample of 80 clients referred to a supportive housing for families program in order to examine the rate and prevalence of other risk …

Hormonal Birth Control And Abortifacient Mechanisms, Catherine M. Powell Apr 2012

Hormonal Birth Control And Abortifacient Mechanisms, Catherine M. Powell

Senior Honors Theses

Recently, there has been a growing controversy, especially among evangelicals, over whether the birth control pill might have an abortifacient mechanism that sometimes causes early chemical abortions. An understanding of this controversy necessitates a clear definition of abortion, abortifacient, pregnancy, implantation, and especially personhood. If a zygote (fertilized egg) is not a person, then it has no fundamental rights and there is essentially no debate concerning the possible link between birth control pills and abortion. There is strong indirect evidence of post-fertilization, or abortive, effects of hormonal birth control. If zygotes are people, and birth …

Population Genetic Structure Of Aedes Polynesiensis In The Society Islands Of French Polynesia: Implications For Control Using A Wolbachia-Based Autocidal Strategy, Corey L. Brelsfoard, Stephen L. Dobson Apr 2012

Population Genetic Structure Of Aedes Polynesiensis In The Society Islands Of French Polynesia: Implications For Control Using A Wolbachia-Based Autocidal Strategy, Corey L. Brelsfoard, Stephen L. Dobson

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Aedes polynesiensis is the primary vector of Wuchereria bancrofti in the South Pacific and an important vector of dengue virus. An improved understanding of the mosquito population genetics is needed for insight into the population dynamics and dispersal, which can aid in understanding the epidemiology of disease transmission and control of the vector. In light of the potential release of a Wolbachia infected strain for vector control, our objectives were to investigate the microgeographical and temporal population genetic structure of A. polynesiensis within the Society Islands of French Polynesia, and to compare the genetic background of a laboratory strain …

This documentary will emphasize that time is critically important from childhood to adulthood by profiling two African Americans around the very pressing themes of why African American fathers leave home. This film will allow the two African American men to discuss their lives in whatever way they see fit to explain and share their stories about their fathers and the role models that they found to replace their father figures

Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (Msdo): Association With Temporomandibular Dysfunction (Tmd) Symptoms, Sheldon Bates Apr 2012

Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (Msdo): Association With Temporomandibular Dysfunction (Tmd) Symptoms, Sheldon Bates

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Transverse mandibular discrepancies are often overlooked during orthodontic treatment. MSDO is a treatment to address this issue, but much debate exists over the long-term implications on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Few studies have sample sizes sufficient to draw clear conclusions about the impact of MSDO on TMJ health. Materials and Methods: This study evaluated private practice records including 49 MSDO patients and 57 traditionally-treated controls. The subjects were assessed by TMD exams that evaluated jaw pain and discomfort using visual analog scales, range of motion for opening, right and left lateral, and protrusive movements, and the presence of clenching, …

Scattering Phase Function Spectrum Makes Reflectance Spectrum Measured From Intralipid Phantoms And Tissue Sensitive To The Device Detection Geometry, S. C. Kanick, V. Krishnaswamy, U. A. Gamm, H. J.C.M Sterenborg, D. J. Robinson, A. Amelink, B. W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

Reflectance spectra measured in Intralipid (IL) close to the source are sensitive to wavelength -dependent changes in reduced scattering coefficient (μs′)and scattering phase function (PF). Experiments and simulations were performed using device designs with either single or separate optical fibers for delivery and collection of light in varying concentrations of IL. Spectral reflectance is not consistentl y linear with varying IL concentration, with PF -dependent effects observed for single fiber devices with diameters smaller than ten transport lengths and for separate source- detector devices that collected light at less than half of a transport length from the source. …

Assessing The Genotoxicity Of Triclosan In Tadpoles Of The American Bullfrog, Lithobates Catesbeianus., David Emery Apr 2012

Assessing The Genotoxicity Of Triclosan In Tadpoles Of The American Bullfrog, Lithobates Catesbeianus., David Emery

Theses and Dissertations

Amphibians are particularly sensitive to environmental degradation and, therefore, serve as effective environmental quality indicators. Research has suggested that amphibian declines are exacerbated by manmade environmental toxicants, especially those found in high concentrations in urban areas. The NIH has pinpointed genotoxicity as a major route of cancer causation, and has since developed stringent testing procedures for potentially hazardous chemicals. One such method, recognized for its simplicity and economy, is the micronucleus assay. A study was conducted assessing the genotoxicity of the widely used antimicrobial agent Triclosan to American Bullfrog tadpoles. Lithobates catesbeianus tadpoles were reared in glass aquaria containing ultra-high …

Behavioral Ecology Of Parental Care In A Dendrobatid Frog (Oophaga Pumilio), Jennifer L. Stynoski Apr 2012

Behavioral Ecology Of Parental Care In A Dendrobatid Frog (Oophaga Pumilio), Jennifer L. Stynoski

Open Access Dissertations

Parental care is essential to the success of both parents and offspring in many species, and plays an important role in the evolution of animal mating systems and life histories. The mechanisms that regulate the intensity and form of parental care in a species are determined by many factors and are highly variable across taxa. However, our understanding of the behavioral ecology of parental care is built on research that is highly taxonomically biased to birds, with some studies also in mammals, arthropods, and fish. Amphibians display an impressive diversity of form in parental care, yet few studies of parental …

Analysis Of The Condition-Specific Regulation Of Puf3p Activity And Puf3p-Mediated Translational Repression Of Mrna In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Melanie A. Miller Apr 2012

Analysis Of The Condition-Specific Regulation Of Puf3p Activity And Puf3p-Mediated Translational Repression Of Mrna In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Melanie A. Miller

Dissertations

The Puf family of proteins regulates aspects of eukaryotic development such as embryonic development, and memory formation by promoting translational repression and/or degradation of targeted mRNAs in the cytoplasm. Yeast Puf3p regulates mitochondria biogenesis and function by modulating the stabilities of nuclear-transcribed mitochondrial mRNAs in response to different carbon sources. Dextrose simulates rapid Puf3p-mediated degradation of its mRNA targets via decay complex recruitment. Ethanol, galactose, or raffinose promotes stabilization of mRNA targets, as Puf3p-mediated decay activity is severely inhibited or abolished. In this work, I have established that carbon source-induced inhibition of Puf3p activity is not due to decreased transcription …
