A Consensus Model For Electroencephalogram Data Via The S-Transform, Andrew Coady Young
A Consensus Model For Electroencephalogram Data Via The S-Transform, Andrew Coady Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A consensus model combines statistical methods with signal processing to create a better picture of the family of related signals. In this thesis, we will consider 32 signals produced by a single electroencephalogram (EEG) recording session. The consensus model will be produced by using the S-Transform of the individual signals and then normalized to unit energy. A bootstrapping process is used to produce a consensus spectrum. This leads to the consensus model via the inverse S-Transform of the consensus spectrum. The method will be applied to both a control and experimental EEG to show how the results can be used …
The Effects Of Nicotine Administration On Behavior And Markers Of Brain Plasticity In A Rodent Model Of Psychosis, Marla K. Perna
The Effects Of Nicotine Administration On Behavior And Markers Of Brain Plasticity In A Rodent Model Of Psychosis, Marla K. Perna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the population. A hallmark of the disorder is increased dopamine D2 receptor sensitivity in the brain. Studies have shown that schizophrenics smoke cigarettes at approximately 4 times the rate of the general population. It has been suggested that nicotine use is a form of self-medication for symptoms in schizophrenia. Smoking behaviors typically begin in adolescence. We assessed effects of nicotine on behavior and brain plasticity in an adolescent rodent model of schizophrenia with the goal of identifying targets for smoking cessation. Methods: Rats were neonatally treated with quinpirole (a D2/D3 agonist) or saline and sensitized …
Effects Of Burn Injury On Biological Ethanol And Ethyl Glucuronide Concentrations, Trista Haupt Wright
Effects Of Burn Injury On Biological Ethanol And Ethyl Glucuronide Concentrations, Trista Haupt Wright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol is the most abused drug in the United States and most frequently performed assay in forensic laboratories. Alcohol is routinely present in biological specimens from fatal residential fires and forensic toxicologists must interpret if these individuals are impaired by determination of their blood alcohol concentrations on post-incineration blood collected at autopsy. There is no known data available to confirm or refute blood alcohol concentrations and impairment in fire-related deaths. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a non-volatile minor ethanol metabolite, may provide a better biomarker for ethanol consumption prior to burn injury. The literature does not address the possibility that ethanol or …

Studies On The Preparation, Immobilization, And Luminescence Properties Of Zinc Oxide (Zno)Quantum Dots, Yasemin Hakat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quantum dots are a part of very important our technological future because of their intriguing and useful properties. These properties are different in character from those of the corresponding bulk material. Quantum dots are inorganic artificial semiconductor nanocrystal whose electrons influence their physical and chemical properties. Zinc oxide quantum dots were synthesized through an ethanol based precipitation via colloidal synthesis method at various pH values. Various emission colors were obtained because the excited quantum dots of various sizes emitted specific wavelengths of light. The emission spectra indicated that the pH dependent quantum dots were successfully synthesized. Zinc oxide quantum dots …

Exploring The Unique Characteristics Of Cancer In Adolescents And Young Adults In Tennessee, Megan Quinn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) ages 15-39 years with cancer have received little attention in the medical and health fields, resulting in a lack of progress for this age group. Little is known about the unique biologic, epidemiologic, and psychosocial issues that play an integral role in the AYA cancer journey. The purposes of this study were to use the Tennessee Cancer Registry for all new cancer cases from 2004-2008 to determine 1) the main types of cancer that affect AYAs in TN, 2) the predictors of late-stage diagnosis of melanoma, and 3) the factors that predict a total thyroidectomy …

‘Talking’ During Early Romantic Courtship: An Empirical Examination Of Potential Sex Differences In Self-Reported Beliefs And Behaviors, Eric James Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tests various hypotheses from a variety of research traditions that predict the likelihood for potential sex differences in "talking": a newly-emergent phase of romantic courtship. Data for this study was derived from a purposive sample of 566 students enrolled during the Fall 2011 semester generated using a self-administered survey available on the East Tennessee State University SONA system. Statistical analyses using chi-square, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and binary logistic regression reveal statistically significant differences for males and females on beliefs about sexual exclusivity and sexual activity during the "talking" phase. Significant behavioral differences exist in whether "talking" is …
Remarkable Resilience Of Teeth (How Are Teeth So Brittle Yet So Resilient), Paul J. Constantino
Remarkable Resilience Of Teeth (How Are Teeth So Brittle Yet So Resilient), Paul J. Constantino
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Tooth enamel is inherently weak, with fracture toughness comparable with glass, yet it is remarkably resilient, surviving millions of functional contacts over a lifetime. We propose a microstructural mechanism of damage resistance, based on observations from ex situ loading of human and sea otter molars (teeth with strikingly similar structural features). Section views of the enamel implicate tufts, hypomineralized crack-like defects at the enamel–dentin junction, as primary fracture sources. We report a stabilization in the evolution of these defects, by ‘‘stress shielding’’ from neighbors, by inhibition of ensuing crack extension from prism interweaving (decussation), and by self-healing. These factors, coupled …

Modeling Antibiotic Resistance When Adding A New Antibiotic To A Hospital Setting., Brandi N. Canter
Modeling Antibiotic Resistance When Adding A New Antibiotic To A Hospital Setting., Brandi N. Canter
Undergraduate Honors Theses
As of now, not many pharmaceutical companies are producing new categories of antibiotics to fight bacterial infections. Therefore, bacteria are building up a resistance to the medications commonly used. Often, antibiotic resistance begins within a hospital. To combat resistance, researchers completed several studies using cycling of the medications that are already in place, but they found either no improvement or the resistance increased with this type of setting. In addition, although preventative infection control measures have been shown to decrease antibiotic resistance for some antibiotics, the level of antibiotic resistance found in hospitals is still extremely high. This motivates the …

Localization And Expression Of Gfrα2 Receptors In Neonatal And Adolescent Mouse Heart., Bryan Gunter
Localization And Expression Of Gfrα2 Receptors In Neonatal And Adolescent Mouse Heart., Bryan Gunter
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Neurturin (NRTN), a member of the glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) family, is required in the development of parasympathetic cholinergic neurons. It signals through binding to a glycosyl-phophatidyl inositol (GPI)-linked receptor, GDNF family receptor α2 (GFRα2), which couples to Ret tyrosine kinase. Studies of NRTN knockout mice have shown that NRTN is essential for normal cholinergic innervation of the heart, but the precise role of NRTN remains unknown. For NRTN to evoke a biological response, GFRα2 must be localized to the surface of target neurons. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and localization of GFRα2 at …

Effects Of Microgravity On Mucin Production In The Urinary Bladder In Mice., Brandon Farmer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The effects of the microgravity of spaceflight are largely unexplored with regard to biological tissues. One particular area of interest is the possible effects microgravity could have on the production of mucins. To determine the possible effects of microgravity on mucin production in the urinary bladder, we examined the transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder from female mice that were flown on the space shuttle Endeavour for 12 days in August, 2007. The flight tissue was compared to tissues from two control groups of animals, ground control and baseline. This study utilized three sets of female mice, with each set …

Finally, it discusses the experiences of the servicemen who contracted polio during the war. …
An Investigation Of Bacterial Ribonucleases As An Antibiotic Target, Ashley Denise Frazier
An Investigation Of Bacterial Ribonucleases As An Antibiotic Target, Ashley Denise Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotics have been commonly used in medical practice for over 40 years. However, the misuse and overuse of current antibiotics is thought to be the primary cause for the increase in antibiotic resistance.
Many current antibiotics target the bacterial ribosome. Antibiotics such as aminoglycosides and macrolides specifically target the 30S or 50S subunits to inhibit bacterial growth. During the assembly of the bacterial ribosome, ribosomal RNA of the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits is processed by bacterial ribonucleases (RNases). RNases are also involved in the degradation and turnover of this RNA during times of stress, such as the presence of …
End Use Packaging: A Survey Of Customer Perception Of Recycling And Environmental Impact Of Packaging Materials, Whitney Chelsea Lamb
End Use Packaging: A Survey Of Customer Perception Of Recycling And Environmental Impact Of Packaging Materials, Whitney Chelsea Lamb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that traditional food packaging for the fast food industry leach toxic chemicals into the food products. Some of these toxins are known endocrine disruptors, which results in reproductive issues as well as hormone imbalances. Alternatives to traditional food packaging have been addressed with special attention to bioactive, biopolymers, and biodegradable packaging in addition to active and intelligent packaging. The hypothesis states that customers will have high demand for more environmentally sustainable fast food packaging, while the alternative hypothesis states that demand will not be high enough to financially support the costly introduction of more environmental packaging products. …

Dartmouth Scholarship
In this study, we demonstrate a method to quantify biomarker expression that uses an exogenous dual-reporter imaging approach to improve tumor signal detection. The uptake of two fluorophores, one nonspecific and one targeted to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), were imaged at 1 h in three types of xenograft tumors spanning a range of EGFR expression levels (n = 6 in each group). Using this dual-reporter imaging methodology, tumor contrast-to-noise ratio was amplified by >6 times at 1 h postinjection and >2 times at 24 h. Furthermore, by as early as 20 min postinjection, the dual-reporter imaging signal …

The Effect Of Chronic Stress On Gill 5ht2a Receptors And Pulsatile Urea Excretion In Opsanus Beta, Alexander W. Frere
Open Access Theses
The Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) is a facultative ureotele in which urea production via the ornithine-urea cycle (O-UC) and pulsatile urea excretion are initiated by high cortisol levels, but a permissive drop in cortisol is required for the activation of the toadfish urea transporter (tUT) to occur. The goal of this study is to determine the exact relationship between cortisol and regulation of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor, which is believed to be responsible for the activation of tUT. A better understanding of the interactions between cortisol and the 5-HT2 receptor family could provide some answers or new treatment methods …
