Knowledge-Assisted Sequential Pattern Analysis: An Application In Labor Contraction Prediction, Zifang Huang May 2012

Knowledge-Assisted Sequential Pattern Analysis: An Application In Labor Contraction Prediction, Zifang Huang

Open Access Dissertations

Although neuraxial techniques, such as spinal and epidural, are still considered as the gold standard for labor analgesia, there are some parturients who cannot receive neuraxial analgesia because of pre-existing conditions, or who request analgesia other than epidural block. An alternative analgesia is remifentanil, which is a relatively new, very potent and short-acting opioid. It has been shown to be effective in the relief of labor pain, but reports to date have failed to find the optimal dosing regimen. A challenge to a systemic opioid is that it must match the unique time course of labor pain. A continuous infusion …

A Latent Class Analysis Of Metabolic Syndrome Among Hispanics/Latinos Living In The United States In Relation To Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence: Results From The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos (Hchs/Sol), William Arguelles

Open Access Dissertations

Using preliminary data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), this cross-sectional study employed latent class analysis to investigate 1) whether distinct subtypes of metabolic syndrome (MetS) could be identified among a large and diverse sample of US Hispanic/Latinos (H/Ls), 2) how identified MetS subtypes differed in demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics, and 3) the association between identified MetS subtypes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence. Incorporating continuous measures of MetS components (waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting glucose) and data on antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, and glucose-lowering medication use into analyses, two latent …

New Methods For Improving The Watershed-Scale Modeling Of In-Stream Pathogen Indicator Bacteria, Jeffrey J. Iudicello May 2012

New Methods For Improving The Watershed-Scale Modeling Of In-Stream Pathogen Indicator Bacteria, Jeffrey J. Iudicello

Open Access Dissertations

Excessive bacteria levels are the leading cause of impairment in U.S. water bodies. This dissertation looked at the use of watershed-scale computer models to predict in-stream bacteria concentrations. The study site was the Little River Experimental Watershed (LREW) in Tifton, GA, and fecal coliform fate and transport models were built for four of the LREW catchments over the period Jan 1996 - Dec 2002. A multi-model approach was used in the study to examine the current capacity of industry-standard models and to avoid conclusions unique to a particular catchment. Three models were examined: HSPF, SWAT, and a new model based …

The Impact Of Positive Reinforcement Strategies On Increased Job Performance In A Virginia University Facilities Management Department, Brandon Keith Artis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Maintaining employee motivation and engagement on the job is important to organizational productivity (Groen, Wouters, & Wilderom, 2011; Leoni, 2011; Vroom, 1964; Wolf & Zwick, 2008). This study investigated the impact of positive reinforcement strategies on increased job performance. The data was obtained from mid-career, non-supervisory individual contributor employees at a Virginia university Facilities Management department, using a quantitative survey. The employees were asked to reflect on their perception of their own job performance, as well as the type, amount, and frequency of feedback they received from their supervisors while on the job. The research found that positive reinforcement has …

Keeping Students Safe: Student Perceptions Of Campus Safety At A Mid-Sized Virginia University And The Impact For Prevention, Response And Risk Reduction Strategies, Elaine Roberts

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) …

Efforts Towards Sustainability In The Costa Rican Cattle Industry, Stephanie Skipp May 2012

Efforts Towards Sustainability In The Costa Rican Cattle Industry, Stephanie Skipp

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis explains Costa Rica’s transformation from a country that was seeking to maximize its economic capabilities through the cattle industry to a country that realizes the true cost of such actions. During Costa Rica’s cattle boom in the 1950s and 1960s, the Costa Rican government adopted economic policies that sought to take full advantage of the international market’s demand for the byproducts of country’s cattle. However, the following decade brought a recognition of the incredible damage the agricultural expansion had dealt on the land. Subsequent presidents and government officials dedicated their efforts into reforming the cattle industry through new …

"A Cosmic Rorschach Test": The Origins And Development Of The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, 1959-1971, Sierra E. Smith

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) emerged in the 1960s and quickly attracted much attention from both scientists and the public. The breadth of terms included in SETI discourse provides an excellent lens view the effects of context and the multiplicity of reactions on the part of scientists to ongoing contentious debates over science’s relationship to society and the federal government. This thesis presents three case studies of the development of SETI during the 1960s. The first case study analyses the origins of SETI as a scientific research project and speaks to the relationship between science and technology. The second …

Hidden Kisses, Walled Gardens, And Angel-Kinder: A Study Of The Victorian And Edwardian Conceptions Of Motherhood And Childhood In Little Women, The Secret Garden, And Peter Pan, Leah Marie Kirkpatrick

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In this paper, I explore the evolving conceptions of childhood and motherhood as expressed in Victorian and Edwardian children’s literature generally, and specifically in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. An overview of the history of children’s literature and its development with relation to the changing cultural concept of childhood, as well as a discussion of social, economic, and creative factors impacting the ideological position of women at the turn of the 20th century provide the necessary background for said exploration. A variety of primary and secondary sources relating to …

FoxD4L1 is a forkhead transcription factor that expands the neural ectoderm by down-regulating genes that promote the onset of neural differentiation and up-regulating genes that maintain proliferative neural precursors in an immature state. We previously demonstrated that binding of Grg4 to an Eh-1 motif enhances the ability of FoxD4L1 to down-regulate target neural genes but does not account for all of its repressive activity. Herein we analyzed the protein sequence for additional interaction motifs and secondary structure. Eight conserved motifs were identified in the C-terminal region of fish and frog proteins. Extending the analysis to mammals identified a high scoring …

Are All Things Equal In The Back Row?: Issues Of Bias And The Female Percussionist, Pamela Rae Riggles May 2012

Are All Things Equal In The Back Row?: Issues Of Bias And The Female Percussionist, Pamela Rae Riggles

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In observing bands or orchestras at all levels of performance proficiency, very often it becomes apparent to the onlooker that certain sections of instruments tend to be made up of a greater number of either male or female performers. For instance, the percussion and trumpet sections of ensembles often tend to be predominately male (Steinberg, 2001). This begs the question as to what implications there may be for those who have chosen an instrument that is not considered a “typical” instrument for their gender to play? What challenges might these musicians face, and what biases, if any, might they have …

Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall May 2012

Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis includes the work, research, and findings that culminated from a non-traditional project that revolved around the processing and analysis of the William Garber Photograph Collection, which is housed in Special Collections of Carrier Library at James Madison University. After processing the photograph collection according to standard archival practice, I analyzed the images to make conclusions about life in the Shenandoah Valley during the post-World War II era. As I delved further into the photographs, I became increasingly aware of three trends: rural modernization, the prevalence of white supremacy, and an emphasis on tourism in the region. Secondary work …

Rust Belt Rhizome, Kathryn L. Hier May 2012

Rust Belt Rhizome, Kathryn L. Hier

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The Detroit phenomenon is happening at smaller scales in dozens of cities across the Rustbelt as a result of industrial decline, suburban growth, and increased poverty levels. This disjuncture in the urban fabric is manifested as a rich figure-ground of two opposing forces: city and “un-city”. The “un-city” is a complex and dynamic collection of foreclosed homes, vacant lots, unoccupied property, condemned buildings, and unused infrastructure that pervades the viable urban systems of the city. The presence of scattered emptiness takes observable socio-economic tolls in the form of increased crime, decreased property values, loss of community, and perceived isolation.

Saving September : A Thesis About Bullying In Two Acts, John Jay Boda May 2012

Saving September : A Thesis About Bullying In Two Acts, John Jay Boda

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Thesis: In 2010, a rash of suicides — especially among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth — began a national conversation about bullying. United States laws and policies along with prevailing societal attitudes towards homosexuality create an ethos condoning such bullying often leading many LGBT youth to conclude it is better to commit suicide than it is to go on living. Growing up isn’t easy for anybody, but it's all the more difficult when you are (or perceived to be) LGBT. Saving September is part narrative play, part civics lesson about the difficulties of growing up gay in America …

Ecotourism, Grant M. Ronchi May 2012

Ecotourism, Grant M. Ronchi

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The idea to design a fully functioning ecotourism lodge was conceived as a result of two projects, the first being an academically organized team assignment and the second, an actual venture of one of my relatives. The challenges that arise in designing solutions for an environmentally-conscious uniform facility are especially stimulating when they are to be executed abroad. The marketability of such a facility needs to be contemplated carefully, respecting a well established culture. Deliberate attention to a triangle of three components will drive this design as a thesis project: the natives and their culture, construction methods and materials, and …

Why Odds Ratio Estimates Of Gwas Are Almost Always Close To 1.0, Yutaka Yasui May 2012

Why Odds Ratio Estimates Of Gwas Are Almost Always Close To 1.0, Yutaka Yasui

COBRA Preprint Series

“Missing heritability” in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) refers to the seeming inability for GWAS data to capture the great majority of genetic causes of a disease in comparison to the known degree of heritability for the disease, in spite of GWAS’ genome-wide measures of genetic variations. This paper presents a simple mathematical explanation for this phenomenon, assuming that the heritability information exists in GWAS data. Specifically, it focuses on the fact that the great majority of association measures (in the form of odds ratios) from GWAS are consistently close to the value that indicates no association, explains why this occurs, …

Background: The Deepwater Horizon disaster was the largest marine oil spill in history, and total vertical exposure of oil to the water column suggests it could impact an enormous diversity of ecosystems. The most vulnerable organisms are those encountering these pollutants during their early life stages. Water-soluble components of crude oil and specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been shown to cause defects in cardiovascular and craniofacial development in a variety of teleost species, but the developmental origins of these defects have yet to be determined. We have adopted zebrafish, Danio rerio, as a model to test whether water accumulated fractions …

Because particular life history traits affect species vulnerability to development pressures, cross-species summaries of life history traits are useful for generating management guidelines. Conservation of aquatic turtles, many members of which are regionally or globally imperiled, requires knowing the extent of upland habitat used for nesting. Therefore, we compiled distances that nests and gravid females had been observed from wetlands. Based on records of > 8000 nests and gravid female records compiled for 31 species in the United States and Canada, the distances that encompass 95% of nests vary dramatically among genera and populations, from just 8 m for Malaclemys to …

Intercollegiate Cross-Country Competition: Racing Is Associated With A Substantial Increase In Salivary Levels Of Cortisol And Testosterone In Men And Women, Kathleen Virginia Casto

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Athletic competition, containing both psychological and physical components, has been shown to be associated with levels of testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) in anticipation of, and during, competition. In the current research, 16 male and 22 female members of a collegiate cross country team gave saliva samples before warm-up, after warm-up, and immediately after the finish of an intercollegiate cross-country meet. Finish times were recorded as a measure of performance outcome. Participants also completed the Mental Toughness in Sport Questionnaire (MTSQ). For both men and women, after-race levels of salivary C and T were substantially elevated relative to before and …
