Headturn Preference Of 10-Month Infants For Familiar And Unfamiliar Signs, Steven Thomas Kulsar May 2012

Headturn Preference Of 10-Month Infants For Familiar And Unfamiliar Signs, Steven Thomas Kulsar

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Most deaf babies born in the United States are born into hearing families and show a developmental lag in spoken language acquisition, reading, writing, and social development when compared to deaf babies of deaf parents or hearing babies of hearing parents, due to limited language access. A modified headturn paradigm has been devised to assess infant preference to various familiar and unfamiliar ASL stimuli, to determine parallels between auditory-spoken and visual-spatial languages. If visual perception of first signs parallels auditory perception of first words, we would expect infants exposed to ASL as their native language to show a preference for …

Delay Discounting In Light-Social And Heavy-Social Drinkers, Megan Ann Arnold May 2012

Delay Discounting In Light-Social And Heavy-Social Drinkers, Megan Ann Arnold

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

To examine the relation between alcohol consumption and delay discounting of monetary rewards and alcohol rewards, I gave 164 college students an online screener designed to measure the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption, and hazardous drinking. I identified 20 light-social drinkers and one heavy-social drinker. I then compared how the heavy-social drinker and the light-social drinker discounted delayed monetary rewards and delayed alcohol rewards. The light-social drinking group and the heavy-social drinker both discounted alcohol rewards more impulsively than monetary rewards; the heavy-social drinker discounted more impulsively than the light-social drinking group on both tasks. I also found that …

Early Flute Pedagogy: The Utilization Of Alternative Types Of Flutes For Young Children, Erin Murphy May 2012

Early Flute Pedagogy: The Utilization Of Alternative Types Of Flutes For Young Children, Erin Murphy

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The typical practice in flute pedagogy is to start teaching the beginning flute student at approximately ten years of age. When compared to many other instrument disciplines, such as violin and piano, this is a relatively late starting age. The delay is primarily due to the large size and weight of the modern orchestral flute, as well as its lung capacity requirements. Not only do the physical limitations of the modern flute make early study difficult, but if disregarded, they also may pose health risks for the young beginner. This paper will discuss the importance of early childhood musical study …

Intragroup Attitudes Of The Lgbt Community: Assessment And Correlates., David W. Hutsell May 2012

Intragroup Attitudes Of The Lgbt Community: Assessment And Correlates., David W. Hutsell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The intragroup attitudes of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community are examined. A general overview of heterosexuals’ views about LGBT persons is considered before reviewing past research on intragroup attitudes that may exist within the LGBT community. Since little work has been done in this area, to fill gaps in the literature a study of 533 self-identified LGBT individuals was conducted to assess attitudes towards each specific subgroup (lesbian, gay male, bisexual male, bisexual female, male-to-female transgender, and female-to-male transgender) of the LGBT community. Several variables, including group identification, perceived stigma, outness, and contact, were examined as predictors intragroup …

A Methodology For The Analysis Of Fly Activity Data., Ruoying Wang May 2012

A Methodology For The Analysis Of Fly Activity Data., Ruoying Wang

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Experiments to learn about the effect of light, sex, and diet on the activity of flies generate great quantities of data that is necessary to analyze. Since different researches and students participate in the analysis of those experiments, it is convenient to have a methodology to analyze the experimental data using software so that the data can be analyzed in a uniform way. Being a double major in mathematics and biology, I am interested in:

  • Deciding which statistical procedure to use to analyze the data so that the research questions of the researchers in biology are answered.
  • To recommend how …

Family Context And Weight Status Among 18-Month-Old Infants In Southern Appalachia: The Role Of Temperament, Parenting Style, And Maternal Feeding Practices., Vincent A. Carroll May 2012

Family Context And Weight Status Among 18-Month-Old Infants In Southern Appalachia: The Role Of Temperament, Parenting Style, And Maternal Feeding Practices., Vincent A. Carroll

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pediatric obesity is a major public health crisis in the United States, and is particularly prevalent in the Southeast. Recent research has shifted the focus toward identifying obesity risk factors earlier in the lifespan, as 9.7% of infants and toddlers are at high weight-for-length (>95th percentile). Family context variables have been found to be related to infant and child weight status. A better understanding of these early contributors may facilitate the continued development of interventions for infants and toddlers at risk for obesity.

The purpose of the current study was to examine infant weight as it relates to parent-report …

In Light Of Light The Secular Sacred In Architecture, Jessica L. Graves May 2012

In Light Of Light The Secular Sacred In Architecture, Jessica L. Graves

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Humankind’s fascination and experimentation with light is as old as the built environment itself. Consciously or unconsciously, architecture and light share a distinctive relationship. This has created rich situations in the past and it can create new ones in the future as well. To address the potential of this relationship in a design thesis, one must realize that there is a crucial difference between an objective description of light and what we perceive.

The measure of light can be quantitatively described in luminous flux, radiant energy, or even directionally in relation to time. This way of approaching light produces standard …

Regimes And Resilience In The Modern Global Food System, Sara W. Tower May 2012

Regimes And Resilience In The Modern Global Food System, Sara W. Tower

Student Publications

Much public discourse surrounding the modern global food system operates on the assumption of the primary agency of individual consumers in ensuring an equitable and sustainable food supply. However, this approach fails to account for the larger structural forces of the system which frame the limits of how we interact with and are affected by our food system. Taking a closer look at the global economic, political, cultural, and environmental forces that have collectively shaped historical food regimes reveals the deeper structural patterns that currently determine how we produce, distribute, and consume food around the world. Due to the underlying …

Nuclear Translocation Of Foxo3a Transcription Factor During Prelamin A Induced Cell Cycle Arrest In 3t3 Cells., Jessica B. Keasler May 2012

Nuclear Translocation Of Foxo3a Transcription Factor During Prelamin A Induced Cell Cycle Arrest In 3t3 Cells., Jessica B. Keasler

Undergraduate Honors Theses

As the so-called “Mothership of the Human Genome,” the cell nucleus must keep all vital genetic information safe, but accessible, inside a strong protective envelope. The inner membrane of the nuclear envelope is lined by tough but adaptable proteins called lamins. While lamins polymerize into fibrous structures that hold up the “walls” of the nucleus, they also serve as an internal scaffold for the complex machinery involved in DNA replication and gene expression. It is in this later role that we have been looking for clues to premature and possibly to normal aging. One type of lamins, Lamin A is …

Normal And Mutant Murine Auditory Brainstem Responses (Abrs), Kristin Shearer May 2012

Normal And Mutant Murine Auditory Brainstem Responses (Abrs), Kristin Shearer

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Spatial organization and topographic maps begin in the periphery and are preserved throughout the central auditory system. The Eph and ephrin family of signaling proteins is involved in the patterning and arrangement of auditory afferents which code information about frequency, intensity, and time. The present study utilizes the ABR as a physiological measure of the electrical potentials occurring in the brainstem following acoustic stimulation. We recorded this measure following click and tone pip stimulation in ephrin-B3 and EphA4 deficient mice at 2-3 months of age and compared them to wild type controls. Significant findings included elevated auditory thresholds, prolonged latency …

The Development Of The Well-Being Interview, Craig Alexander Asselin May 2012

The Development Of The Well-Being Interview, Craig Alexander Asselin

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Although psychologists and psychotherapists have long been concerned with the construct of well-being, currently there exist only self-report measures of the construct. This is potentially problematic because, as a number of researchers have pointed out, there are many different kinds of biases that can undermine the validity of data obtained from self-report measures. The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive, user-friendly, clinician administered interview to assess well-being. In order to accomplish this, the Well-Being Interview (WBI) was developed, based on recent developments in positive psychology (e.g., Diener (2000), Ryff (1995) and Seligman (2011) and theoretical unification (Henriques, …

Assessing Help-Seeking Attitudes, Service Utilization, And Provider Preferences Among Undergraduate Students With Self-Reported Sexual Functioning Concerns, Ashley M. Reckert May 2012

Assessing Help-Seeking Attitudes, Service Utilization, And Provider Preferences Among Undergraduate Students With Self-Reported Sexual Functioning Concerns, Ashley M. Reckert

Master's Theses

Researchers who have studied help-seeking for sexual concerns have consistently documented that individuals, couples, and families underutilize services. Additionally, research has demonstrated that individuals endorse myriad barriers to seeking informal and formal help, especially for sexual functioning concerns. This study examined the types of sexual concerns faced by a sample of 347 of undergraduate students, their provider preferences in the past, present, and future, and their help-seeking behaviors for formal and informal help sources. Despite the occurrence of sexual functioning concerns in the current study, services that address sexual concerns were largely underutilized. However, barriers to seeking help and negative …

Impact Of Adiposity Status On The Association Of Regular Statin Use And Increased Number Of Aberrant Crypt Foci, Homaira Rasool May 2012

Impact Of Adiposity Status On The Association Of Regular Statin Use And Increased Number Of Aberrant Crypt Foci, Homaira Rasool

Master's Theses

INTRODUCTION: While animal studies consistently show a preventive role of statin use in colon cancer development, evidence from human studies is conflicting with recent reports suggesting an increased risk of aberrant crypt foci and adenoma. We hypothesize that insufficient control of confounding due to indication bias for prescribing of statins, particularly obesity-induced physiologic dysregulation, might partly explain discrepant results. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients receiving standard colonoscopy at the Colon Cancer Prevention Program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, which was followed by chromoendoscopy for ACF detection. ACF number was categorized at low (RESULTS: Participants who reported regular …

Raccoon Acclimation Towards Traps And Its Effect On Surveillance And Monitoring Of Zoonotic Diseases, Lindsay Rollend May 2012

Raccoon Acclimation Towards Traps And Its Effect On Surveillance And Monitoring Of Zoonotic Diseases, Lindsay Rollend

Master's Theses

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) serve as a source of infection with various pathogens for people, most notably, rabies. Raccoons are specifically targeted for the control of rabies in the United States, primarily due to the 100% fatality rate in humans and animals. There is no cure or treatment for rabies and vaccines may be administered to people if it is administered promptly. In order to evaluate how successful trapping of raccoons is by using conventional methods, motion sensing cameras were placed on traps in order to captured raccoon behaviors. Pictures were coded based on these behaviors (around the trap but not …

High Speed Atomic Force Microscopy Techniques For The Efficient Study Of Nanotribology, James L. Bosse May 2012

High Speed Atomic Force Microscopy Techniques For The Efficient Study Of Nanotribology, James L. Bosse

Master's Theses

As mechanical devices scale down to micro/nano length scales, it is crucial to understand friction and wear at the nanoscale (nanotribology) especially at technically relevant sliding velocities. Accordingly, three novel techniques have been developed to study nanotribology, leveraging recent advances in high speed AFM. The first method utilizes high line-scanning rates coupled with sinusoidal scanning along the AFM fast scan axis, enabling rapid friction measurements as a function of velocity up to 20 mm/sec. The second method rapidly acquires friction versus force curves through disabling the feedback loop during scanning and relating the resulting lateral data with the correspondingly varying …

Nanocharacterization Of Porous Materials With Atomic Force Microscopy, Yasemin Kutes May 2012

Nanocharacterization Of Porous Materials With Atomic Force Microscopy, Yasemin Kutes

Master's Theses

Scanning Probe Microscopy techniques have proven very useful in the investigation of porous nanostructured surfaces. Especially, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) has been widely used due to its compatibility with non-conducting surfaces. In particular, AFM often complements other techniques like scanning and transmission electron microscopy by providing quantitative surface information coupled with nanoscale spatial resolution. Its ability to operate in fluid is also important, as this allows researchers to mimic the physiological environment of biological materials and systems. In this work, two main types of porous materials are studied with AFM, including Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC) electrode catalyst layers, and …

Mothers Do Not Drive The Development Of Adult Homesign Systems: Evidence From Comprehension, Emily Carrigan May 2012

Mothers Do Not Drive The Development Of Adult Homesign Systems: Evidence From Comprehension, Emily Carrigan

Master's Theses

Studying the communication systems that arise in spontaneously occurring cases of degraded linguistic input can help clarify human predispositions for language. Some deaf individuals born into hearing families, who do not receive conventional linguistic input, develop gestures, called “homesign,” to communicate. We examined homesign systems used by four deaf Nicaraguan adults (ages 15-27), and evaluated whether homesigners’ hearing mothers are potential sources for these systems. Study One measured mothers’ comprehension of descriptions of events (e.g., “A man taps a woman”) produced in homesign and spoken Spanish. Mothers comprehended spoken Spanish descriptions (produced by one of their hearing children) better than …

An Approach For Use Of Dual Frequency Identification Sonar (Didson) To Quantify Behavioral Aspects Of Piscivory At Ecologically Relevant Time And Space Scales, Victoria E. Price May 2012

An Approach For Use Of Dual Frequency Identification Sonar (Didson) To Quantify Behavioral Aspects Of Piscivory At Ecologically Relevant Time And Space Scales, Victoria E. Price

Master's Theses

Predator-prey interactions of large vagile fishes are difficult to study in the ocean due to limitations in the space and time requirements for observations. Small-scale direct underwater observations by divers (<10m >radius) and large-scale hydroacoustic surveys (10s - 100s km2) are traditional approaches. However, large piscivorous predators identify and attack prey at the scale of meters to tens of meters. Dual- Frequency Identification Sonar, or DIDSON, is a high-resolution acoustic camera operating in the MHz range that provides detailed continuous video-like imaging of objects out to 30 m range. This technology can be used to observe predator-prey interactions at ecologically …
