Exposure To Potentially Traumatic Events, Emotional Adjustment, And Social Competence In Preschoolers Facing Economic Risk, Hillary Hurst Jun 2012

Exposure To Potentially Traumatic Events, Emotional Adjustment, And Social Competence In Preschoolers Facing Economic Risk, Hillary Hurst

Graduate Masters Theses

The current study examined the relationship between exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs), emotional adjustment, and social competence in a sample of economically-disadvantaged, racially and ethnically diverse preschool-aged children (n=63; 60% female; average age = 52 months, S.D. = 10.30, range: 36-74 months). In this cross-sectional study, primary relationships between exposure to PTEs and emotional adjustment, and exposure to PTEs and social competence were examined. Additionally, parent affective symptoms were tested as a moderator of the relationship between child exposure to PTEs and emotional adjustment, and emotional adjustment was tested as a moderator of the relationship between child exposure to …

Investigating The Role Of An Understudied North Atlantic Right Whale Habitat: Right Whale Movement, Ecology, And Distribution In Jeffreys Ledge, Kathryn Longley Jun 2012

Investigating The Role Of An Understudied North Atlantic Right Whale Habitat: Right Whale Movement, Ecology, And Distribution In Jeffreys Ledge, Kathryn Longley

Graduate Masters Theses

The critically endangered North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) consistently visits five major habitats throughout the year; however, they are known to visit additional habitats. This project examines the role of Jeffreys Ledge as an additional habitat of importance for this species by investigating three aspects of its distribution and ecology. I first addressed the relationship of Jeffreys Ledge to a known significant right whale feeding ground, Cape Cod Bay, by quantifying the movement of right whales between the two habitats and comparing demographic characteristics of right whales seen in these habitats. Secondly, I measured the quality of the zooplankton …

Using Rigidity Analysis To Probe Mutation-Induced Structural Changes In Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Jeanne Hardy, Ileana Streinu Jun 2012

Using Rigidity Analysis To Probe Mutation-Induced Structural Changes In Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Jeanne Hardy, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Predicting the effect of a single amino acid substitution on the stability of a protein structure is a fundamental task in macromolecular modeling. It has relevance to drug design and understanding of disease-causing protein variants. We present KINARI-Mutagen, a web server for performing in silico mutation experiments on protein structures from the Protein Data Bank. Our rigidity-theoretical approach permits fast evaluation of the effects of mutations that may not be easy to perform in vitro, because it is not always possible to express a protein with a specific amino acid substitution. We use KINARI-Mutagen to identify critical residues, and we …

Stress, Coping And Suicide Ideation In Chinese College Students, Xiaoyun Zhang, Haiping Wang, Yan Ruth Xia, Xiaohong Liu, Eunju Jung

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The study was to examine 1) whether stress and coping styles could significantly predict the probability of suicide ideation; 2) and whether coping styles were mediators or moderators on the association between life stress and suicide ideation. The survey was conducted in a sample of 671 Chinese college students. Approximately twenty percent students reported having suicide ideation. Life stress, active coping styles, and passive coping styles all had independent effect on the probability of suicide ideation. Passive coping styles, especially fantasizing, mediated the relation between life stress and suicide ideation. Moderation hypotheses were not supported. Implications of the findings and …

Between Family And Market: The Decline Of Professional Employment Among Egyptian Female University Graduates, Magda Aboul Ela Jun 2012

Between Family And Market: The Decline Of Professional Employment Among Egyptian Female University Graduates, Magda Aboul Ela

Theses and Dissertations

It is noticeable that the female professional employment is declining among graduate students in Egypt. The patriarchal gendered attitudes permeate family, labor market and state to form a powerful obstacle to women's equal participation in the labor market. The young women struggle to position themselves in the labor market without institutional or structural coverage. On one hand the patriarchal family reinforces the gender norms that dictate the secondary status of women whether at the household or in the labor market and moreover, preaches the male dominance ideology. On the other hand the state's legislation deepens this secondary status of women …

The Occupy Wall Street Movement As A 'Space Of Profanation', Alberto Rinaldi Jun 2012

The Occupy Wall Street Movement As A 'Space Of Profanation', Alberto Rinaldi

Theses and Dissertations

Born in a crucial historical moment - the decennial of 9/11, and more than ten years after the anti-globalization movement of Seattle - the Occupy Wall Street movement (OWS) has awaken again protest and dissent, for the first time at the heart of the largest financial centre of world. More â mature' than its predecessor and also increasingly more encompassing, this movement is presently working as a sort of â sounding board' of protest and dissent, finding its inspiration in the Arab Spring, the Spanish indignados, and in all other forms of systemic protests that have flared around the world …

Proline-Rich Tyrosine Kinase 2 (Pyk2) Regulates Igf-I-Induced Cell Motility And Invasion Of Urothelial Carcinoma Cells, Marco Genua, Shi-Qiong Xu, Simone Buraschi, Stephen C. Peiper, Leonard G. Gomella, Antonio Belfiore, Renato V. Iozzo, Andrea Morrione

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The insulin-like growth factor receptor I (IGF-IR) plays an essential role in transformation by promoting cell growth and protecting cancer cells from apoptosis. We have recently demonstrated that the IGF-IR is overexpressed in invasive bladder cancer tissues and promotes motility and invasion of urothelial carcinoma cells. These effects require IGF-I-induced Akt- and MAPK-dependent activation of paxillin. The latter co-localizes with focal adhesion kinases (FAK) at dynamic focal adhesions and is critical for promoting motility of urothelial cancer cells. FAK and its homolog Proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2) modulate paxillin activation; however, their role in regulating IGF-IR-dependent signaling and motility in …

Effectiveness Of Pan Trapping As A Rapid Bioinventory Method Of Freshwater Shoreline Insects Of Subtropical Texas, Frank J. Dirrigl Jr.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Pan trapping proves to be an effective method for field surveying insects, especially Diptera. This manuscript examines the effectiveness of the method for the rapid bioinventory of freshwater shoreline insects. Pan traps at ground level, above ground, and elevated and of different colors were evaluated for their ability to attract and capture insects. Abundance (n), taxonomic richness (T), and hierarchical diversity indices (H′) allowed for the determination of efficacy among methods. Yellow pan (n = 141, T = 10, H′ = 1.15) and elevated yellow pan traps (n = 113, T = 5, H′ = 1.18) were most effective at …

Theses and Dissertations

Atlantis II is the largest brine pool in the Red Sea. It lies at 2,200m deep with an area of about 60km2. The lower convective layer of the Atlantis II brine pool (ATII-LCL) is characterized by extreme conditions, the temperature reaches 68.2°C, salinity of 270 psu, and there is high concentration of heavy metals. Microbial communities inhabiting this harsh environment are expected to have enzymes and proteins that are adapted to these conditions. Such proteins and enzymes would be very attractive candidates not just to understand the structural alteration that lead to their adaptation to these abiotic factors, but also …

Exploring The Biodiversity Of Anammox In Atlantis Ii And Kebrit Brine Pools' Interfaces, Ibrahim Farag

Theses and Dissertations

The Red Sea brine pools are unique environments to assess the biochemical adaptation of marine bacteria. The role of nitrogen in marine biogeochemistry is central and greatly influences the diverse elements including carbon and phosphorus. Anammox communities play a significant role in the total nitrogen loss especially in deep sea and deep ocean ecosystems. Despite this, the biodiversity of Anammox bacteria have not been previously investigated in any brine pool ecosystems. With the advances of the metagenomics based approaches, the exploration of the yet uncultured microbial communities including the Anammox bacteria has taken different perspectives. Anammox communities are currently analyzed …

Perk-Dependent Repression Of Mir-106b-25 Cluster Is Required For Er Stress-Induced Apoptosis., S. Gupta, D. E. Read, A. Deepti, K. Cawley, A. Gupta, D. Oommen, T. Verfaillie, S. Matus, Mary A. Smith, Justin L. Mott, P. Agostinis, C. Hetz, A. Samali

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Activation of the unfolded protein response sensor PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (Perk) attenuates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress levels. Conversantly, if the damage is too severe and ER function cannot be restored, this signaling branch triggers apoptosis. Bcl-2 homology 3-only family member Bim is essential for ER stress-induced apoptosis. However, the regulatory mechanisms controlling Bim activation under ER stress conditions are not well understood. Here, we show that downregulation of the miR-106b-25 cluster contributes to ER stress-induced apoptosis and the upregulation of Bim. Hypericin-mediated photo-oxidative ER damage induced Perk-dependent cell death and led to a significant decrease in the levels of …

Preservation And Conservation Issues In Selected Private Universities In South-West Nigeria, Miracle Eka Njeze Jun 2012

Preservation And Conservation Issues In Selected Private Universities In South-West Nigeria, Miracle Eka Njeze

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Librarians the world over are tasked with the responsibility of acquiring, processing, disseminating this information to users, and due to constant exposure of clients to these materials the rate of degradation increases. Every library is prone to two kinds of deterioration: biological deterioration caused by insect attack/fungi growth or environmental deterioration caused by extreme dampness, wide fluctuations of relative humidity, variations in temperatures, light and atmospheric pollutants (Maravilla, 2008).

Library materials consist of media, non-book and non-print resources. Examples of media resources include computer hard-drive, databases, library software; non book materials include CD ROMs, audio and video tape, while …

Investigating The Translation Of Cobra1: Canonical Expression Is Alternatively Initiated From A Non-Aug Codon, Mohamed Abouelsoud

Theses and Dissertations

COBRA1, co-factor of BRCA1, is a transcriptional regulator and a subunit of the Negative elongation complex also known as NELF-B. Although this protein was first designated as a cofactor of BRCA1 and hence acts accordingly, it was found later that it elicits a battery of response genes overlapping those regulated by BRCA1 in absence of BRCA1 itself. Cobra1 deletion is embryonic lethal and results in embryonic stem cells (ESC) differentiation independent of the typical pluripotency machinery. Moreover, it was found that it has a role in suppression of tumors' growth and patients with poor prognosis of breast cancer had decreased …
