Automated Tongue Feature Extraction For Zheng Classification In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ratchadaporn Kanawong, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Tao Ma, Dong Xu, Shao Li, Ye Duan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

ZHENG, Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome, is an integral and essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. It defines the theoretical abstraction of the symptom profiles of individual patients and thus, used as a guideline in disease classification in Chinese medicine. For example, patients suffering from gastritis may be classified as Cold or Hot ZHENG, whereas patients with different diseases may be classified under the same ZHENG. Tongue appearance is a valuable diagnostic tool for determining ZHENG in patients. In this paper, we explore new modalities for the clinical characterization of ZHENG using various supervised machine learning algorithms. We propose a …

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Double-stranded (ds) RNA fungal viruses are typically isometric single-shelled particles that are classified into three families, Totiviridae, Partitiviridae and Chrysoviridae, the members of which possess monopartite, bipartite and quadripartite genomes, respectively. Recent findings revealed that mycovirus-related dsRNA viruses are more diverse than previously recognized. Although an increasing number of viral complete genomic sequences have become available, the evolution of these diverse dsRNA viruses remains to be clarified. This is particularly so since there is little evidence for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) among dsRNA viruses.

RESULTS: In this study, we report the molecular properties of two novel dsRNA mycoviruses that …

Characterizing The Role Of Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (Nurf) In Tumorigenesis And Metastatic Progression Using Mouse Models Of Breast Cancer., Suehyb Alkhatib

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly the role of epigenetic machinery as a bridge between underlying DNA sequence and cellular phenotype is being discovered. The establishment of a myriad of unique cellular types sharing identical gene sequences in a multicellular organism gives a broad sense for the inherent role of epigenetic influence on cell differentiation. Importantly, the epigenetic mechanisms involved in establishing cell identity unsurprisingly contribute to diseased states, including cancer. Recent research continues to elucidate contributory roles of epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA regulation, in human cancers. Additionally, chromatin remodelers, such as the Nucleosome Remodeling Factor (NURF), have been …

Global Estimates Of Mineral Dust Aerosol Iron And Aluminum Solubility That Account For Particle Size Using Diffusion-Controlled And Surface-Area-Controlled Approximations, Qin Han, Charles S. Zender, J. Keith Moore, Clifton S. Buck, Ying Chen, Anne Johansen, Christopher I. Measures Jun 2012

Global Estimates Of Mineral Dust Aerosol Iron And Aluminum Solubility That Account For Particle Size Using Diffusion-Controlled And Surface-Area-Controlled Approximations, Qin Han, Charles S. Zender, J. Keith Moore, Clifton S. Buck, Ying Chen, Anne Johansen, Christopher I. Measures

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Mineral aerosol deposition is recognized as the dominant source of iron to the open ocean and the solubility of iron in the dust aerosol is highly variable, with measurements ranging from 0.01–80%. Global models have difficulty capturing the observed variations in solubility, and have ignored the solubility dependence on aerosol size. We introduce two idealized physical models to estimate the size dependence of mineral aerosol solubility: a diffusion‐controlled model and a surface‐area‐controlled model. These models produce differing time‐ and space‐varying solubility maps for aerosol Fe and Al given the dust age at deposition, size‐resolved dust entrainment fields, and the aerosol …

Mda-7/Il-24; A Promising Cancer Therapeutic Agent, Hossein Hamed Jun 2012

Mda-7/Il-24; A Promising Cancer Therapeutic Agent, Hossein Hamed

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive cancer that affects millions of patients per year. Conventional therapies combining chemotherapeutic agents with radiation can only extend survival by a few months; therefore, there is a dire need for an effective means of treating this deadly disease. Melanoma differentiation-associated gene-7/interleukin-24 (mda-7/IL-24), currently in the early stages of FDA pre-IND drug trials, has proven to be an effective cancer specific cytokine, able to trigger the onset of mitochondrial dysfunction and/or autophagy. GBM’s have mutations that often result in the activation of cytoprotective cell signaling pathways, preventing cancer therapeutics and even MDA-7/IL-24 treatments from being …

Sigma Factor N (Σn): A Novel Regulator Of Extreme Acid Resistance In Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157:H7, Pamela Ann Fay Jun 2012

Sigma Factor N (Σn): A Novel Regulator Of Extreme Acid Resistance In Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157:H7, Pamela Ann Fay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Extreme acid resistance contributes to the successful transmission of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) through acidic food matrices and the stomach, allowing it to gain access to the intestine and elicit disease in humans. Alternative sigma factor N (σN, encoded by rpoN) was previously identified as a novel regulator of extreme acid resistance in EHEC. This study investigated the role for σN and co-expressed products of the rpoN operon in the acid resistance phenotype of EHEC. The results revealed that σN primarily controls acid resistance through repression of the glutamate-dependent acid resistance (GDAR) system through control …

An Investigation Of The Nutritional Condition Of Low-Latitude Fish Larvae: Growth, Transport, And Implications For Population Connectivity, Martha J. Hauff Jun 2012

An Investigation Of The Nutritional Condition Of Low-Latitude Fish Larvae: Growth, Transport, And Implications For Population Connectivity, Martha J. Hauff

Open Access Dissertations

Coral reef fishes are typically characterized by a protracted pelagic larval dispersal period, which creates the potential for connectivity of geographically discrete populations. The degree to which connectivity occurs is affected not only by whether larvae are transported from one reef to another, but also by whether they reach a settlement site in adequate nutritional condition to survive the juvenile period and beyond. It is possible that larvae with different dispersal trajectories (i.e. those that are retained close to shore as compared to those that travel great distances) may differ in their condition levels, and thereby, the extent to which …

Regulating Global Biodiversity: What Is The Problem?, Tim Swanson, Ben Groom Jun 2012

Regulating Global Biodiversity: What Is The Problem?, Tim Swanson, Ben Groom

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We distinguish between local problems of biodiversity loss and global ones, where international cooperation is required. Global biodiversity regulation involves choosing the optimal stopping rule regarding global land conversions, in order to ensure that some areas of unconverted natural reserves remain to support the production sector that exists on converted lands. The basic difficulty with implementing a solution to this global problem lies in the asymmetry in endowments between those states that have previously converted, and those that have not. We demonstrate that the fundamental problem of global biodiversity regulation is similar to the bargaining problem analysed by Nash, Rubinstein …

Small Molecule E2f Inhibitor, Douglas W. Cress, Yihong Ma Jun 2012

Small Molecule E2f Inhibitor, Douglas W. Cress, Yihong Ma

USF Patents

A small molecular inhibitor of E2F (HLM006474) was identified using a computer-based virtual screen and the known crystal structure of the DNA bound E2F4/DP2 heterodimer. Treatment of multiple cell lines resulted in the loss of intracellular E2F4 DNA-binding activity. Overnight exposure to HLM006474 resulted in down regulation of total E2F4 protein as well as several known E2F targets. The effects of treatment on different cell lines included a reduction in cell proliferation and an increase in apoptosis. Apoptosis was induced in a manner distinct from cisplatin and doxorubicin. E2F4-null MEFs (mouse embryo fibroblasts) were less sensitive than wildtype counterparts to …

Environmental Regulation And The Cross-Border Diffusion Of New Technology: Evidence From Automobile Patents, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Richard Perkins, Eric Neumayer Jun 2012

Environmental Regulation And The Cross-Border Diffusion Of New Technology: Evidence From Automobile Patents, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Richard Perkins, Eric Neumayer

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We examine the impact of environmental regulation on the international diffusion of new technology through the patent system. We employ a dataset of automobile emission standards between 1992 and 2007 and corresponding data on cross-border patent inflows of technologies developed to comply with these standards. Our analysis, based on a research design of country pair years, shows it is “regulatory distance” between countries rather than absolute regulatory stringency per se that matters for cross-border patent inflows: the transfer of compliance technologies rises when regulatory standards in the inventor and the recipient countries become “closer”. Consistent with this main result, we …

New Insights Into Ice Growth And Melting Modifications By Antifreeze Proteins, Maya Bar-Dolev, Yeliz Celik, J. S. Wettlaufer, Peter L. Davies, Ido Braslavsky

Physics Faculty Research

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) evolved in many organisms, allowing them to survive in cold climates by controlling ice crystal growth. The specific interactions of AFPs with ice determine their potential applications in agriculture, food preservation and medicine. AFPs control the shapes of ice crystals in a manner characteristic of the particular AFP type. Moderately active AFPs cause the formation of elongated bipyramidal crystals, often with seemingly defined facets, while hyperactive AFPs produce more varied crystal shapes. These different morphologies are generally considered to be growth shapes. In a series of bright light and fluorescent microscopy observations of ice crystals in solutions …

A Study Of Potential Risk Factors Of Depression Among Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Claudia Ximena Aguado Loi Jun 2012

A Study Of Potential Risk Factors Of Depression Among Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Claudia Ximena Aguado Loi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Women with breast cancer commonly experience depression. However, this condition often goes unrecognized, undertreated, and understudied, especially in ethnic minorities. If left untreated, co-existing depression in women with cancer can complicate cancer treatment, lead to poor treatment adherence for both conditions, and decrease survival. These negative consequences are considerably higher among Latinas. With the growing number of Latinos and diversity within the Latino community, the literature has identified the need to disaggregate Latinos by region of origin. Unfortunately, few studies account for these differences and no study to date has examined risk factors of depression among Latinas diagnosed with breast …

Hierarchy Of Supramolecular Synthons In The Of Design Multi-Component Crystals, Padmini Kavuru Jun 2012

Hierarchy Of Supramolecular Synthons In The Of Design Multi-Component Crystals, Padmini Kavuru

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most of the biological systems in nature are sustained by molecular self-assemblies which are the finest examples of supramolecular architectures. Non-covalent interactions are key concepts which govern these molecular assemblies. Inspired by these examples crystal engineering emerged as an important tool in supramolecular chemistry which aids in the invention of new molecular structures with desired properties. Understanding of how the molecules interact at the molecular levels enables one to rationally design novel solid forms with modulated physicochemical properties. This feature of crystal engineering has heightened its position in materials chemistry and is currently one of the most well studied fields …

The Problem Of Perception, Radical Reflection, And The Body: Towards Understanding Merleau-Ponty's Post-Kantian Transcendental Philosophy, Arsalan Memon Jun 2012

The Problem Of Perception, Radical Reflection, And The Body: Towards Understanding Merleau-Ponty's Post-Kantian Transcendental Philosophy, Arsalan Memon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Merleau-Ponty is typically known for his account of embodiment or what it means to be a body. In the dissertation, Iargue that what Merleau-Ponty means by a body has not been adequately understood because the framework in which it must be understood is either ignored or inadequately interpreted. My central interpretive thesis is that Merleau-Ponty's notion of a body must be understood within a transcendental framework. To substantiate the central interpretive thesis, in Chapter 1, I examine Merleau-Ponty's proposal for a post-Kantian transcendental philosophy with which The Structure of Behavior ends. I maintain that at the basis of this proposal …

The Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station (TPNGS) is a nuclear power plant situated on the shores of Biscayne Bay, FL. The fringing mangrove shoreline of Biscayne Bay provides essential habitat for a variety of ecologically and commercially important species of fish. There is concern among stakeholders that proposed expansion at TPNGS may pose environmental risks. The goal of this thesis was to investigate current status of knowledge of environmental risk to the nearshore fish communities inhabiting the mangroves adjacent to TPNGS. Specific objectives included: 1) examining perception of environmental risk from TPNGS by stakeholder groups in the environmental regulatory arena; …

Morality And Contentious Politics In Latin America: Abortion And Lgbt Rights In Argentina And Mexico, Ana P. Morgenstern Jun 2012

Morality And Contentious Politics In Latin America: Abortion And Lgbt Rights In Argentina And Mexico, Ana P. Morgenstern

Open Access Dissertations

This study analyzes the factors that have facilitated or hindered liberalization of abortion and same-sex marriage in Argentina and Mexico. In particular, this project will examine the argument that differences in mobilization strategies, available resources, contrasts in framing and patterns of alliances in the political system have played fundamental roles in shaping divergent policy outcomes on these controversial social issues. Against the backdrop of democratization, changes in institutional configurations, and the rising acceptance of sexuality in the context of universal human rights, these policy issues are subject to the contingencies of contentious politics. The argument is twofold: First, international norm …
