Acid phosphatase (ACP1) is a polymorphic enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of flavinmononucleotide (FMN) to riboflavin and regulates the cellular concentration of flavin-adeninedinucleotide (FAD) and, consequently, energy metabolism. Its activity is modulated by adenosine deaminase (ADA1) genotype. Aim of our work is to verify whether individuals with a high proportion of ACP1 f isozyme and carrying ADA*2 allele, displaying the highest phosphatase activity, may have a higher life expectancy. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 569 females and 509 males (18-106 years) randomly recruited from Central Italy. These samples were subdivided into three sexspecific age groups …

Oxygen Glucose Deprivation In Rat Hippocampal Slice Cultures Results In Alterations In Carnitine Homeostasis And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Thomas Rau, Qing Lu, Shruti Sharma, Xutong Sun, Gregory Leary, Matthew L. Beckman, Yal Hou, Mark S. Wainwright, Michael P. Kavanaugh, David J. Poulsen, Stephen M. Black

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by depolarization of mitochondrial membranes and the initiation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis are pathological responses to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the neonatal brain. Carnitine metabolism directly supports mitochondrial metabolism by shuttling long chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. Our previous studies have shown that HI disrupts carnitine homeostasis in neonatal rats and that L-carnitine can be neuroprotective. Thus, this study was undertaken to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which HI alters carnitine metabolism and to begin to elucidate the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of L-carnitine (LCAR) supplementation. Utilizing neonatal rat hippocampal slice cultures we …

Technically Speaking: On Equipping And Evaluating “Unnatural” Language Learners , Joshua Reno Sep 2012

Technically Speaking: On Equipping And Evaluating “Unnatural” Language Learners , Joshua Reno

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

This article compares different communicative trials for apes in captivity and children with autism in order to investigate how ideological assumptions about linguistic agency and impairment are constructed and challenged in practice. To the extent that Euro-American techniques of “unnatural” language instruction developed during the Cold War era have been successful, it is because communicative interactions are broken down into basic components, and would-be language learners are equipped with materials, devices, and habits that make up for their distinct bio/social deficits. Such linguistic equipment can present a challenge to the ideological presumption of a subject inherently gifted with the rudiments …

Operator-Based Robust Nonlinear Tracking Control For A Human Multi-Joint Arm-Like Manipulator With Unknown Time-Varying Delays, Aihui Wang, Mingcong Deng

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, an operator-based robust nonlinear tracking control for a human multi-joint arm-like manipulator with unknown time-varying delays is proposed by using robust right coprime factorization approach and a forward predictive operator. That is, first, considering the uncertainties of dynamic model consist of measurement error and disturbances, a nonlinear feedback control scheme is designed to eliminate effect of uncertainties. Second, an operator controller based on real measured data from human multi-joint arm viscoelasticity is presented to obtain desired motion mechanism of human multi-joint arm viscoelastic properties, the unknown time-varying delays are described by a delay operator, and the forward …

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca Sep 2012

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the last two decades the mathematical modeling of real-world complex systems has received much attention. These systems are composed by a high number of interacting entities which are able to express a specific strategy. In order to reduce complexity, the whole system is decomposed in different subsystems that are sets of heterogeneous entities having the ability of expressing the same function. The microscopic interactions among the functional subsystems generate the emerging behaviors that are typical of the complex systems. This paper is concerned with suitable developments of the methods of mathematical kinetic theory for active particles for the modeling …

Well-Posedness Of The Modified Crank-Nicholson Difference Schemes In C, Allaberen Ashyralyev Sep 2012

Well-Posedness Of The Modified Crank-Nicholson Difference Schemes In C, Allaberen Ashyralyev

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the present paper the modified Crank-Nicholson difference schemes for the approximate solutions of the nonlocal boundary value problem v 0 (t) + Av(t) = f(t)(0 ≤ t ≤ 1), v(0) = v(λ) + µ, 0 < λ ≤ 1 for differential equations in an arbitrary Banach space E with the strongly positive operator A are considered. The well-posedness of these difference schemes in C β,γ τ (E) and Ce β,γ τ (E) spaces is established. In applications, the coercive stability estimates for the solutions of difference schemes of the second order of accuracy over time and of an arbitrary order of accuracy over space variables in the case of the nonlocal boundary value problem for the 2mth-order multidimensional parabolic equation are obtained

A Study Of Data Mining Trend Through The Optimized Bibliometric Methodology Based On Sci Database From 1993 To 2011, Lu Dai, Lixin Ding, Yunwen Lei, Yangge Tian

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

An optimized bibliometric method was applied in this work to evaluate global scientific production of data mining papers of the Science Citation Index (SCI). In compared with traditional bibliometric keyword analysis, a semantic words class was established by applying the text extraction mode to remove noise in the abstract and combining with the core relative phrases retrieved from keywords to get the sample for further experiment. The analysis shows a high correlation between title and keywords, and the title reports less information than keywords does. Also, keywords provide more positive guidance to know and be familiar with the status and …

A Numerical Method For Solving Linear Non-Homogenous Fractional Ordinary Differential Equation By Using The Operational Matrices Of The Bernstein Polynomials, Behrouz Parsa Moghaddam, Arman Aghili

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a numerical method for solving LNFODE (Linear Non-homogenous Fractional Ordinary Differential Equation) is presented. The method presented is based on Bernstein polynomials approximation. The operational matrices of integration, differentiation and products are introduced and utilized to reduce the LNFODE problem in order to solve algebraic equations. The method is general, easy to implement, and yields very accurate results. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

We use two coupled equations to analyze the space-time dynamics of two interacting languages. Firstly, we introduce a cohabitation model, which is more appropriate for human populations than classical (non-cohabitation) models. Secondly, using numerical simulations we …nd the front speed of a new language spreading into a region where another language was previously used. Thirdly, for a special case we derive an analytical formula that makes it possible to check the validity of our numerical simulations. Finally, as an example, we …nd that the observed front speed for the spread of the English language into Wales in the period 1961-1981 …

Extensive Population Structure In San, Khoe And Mixed Ancestry Populations From Southern Africa Revealed By 44 Short 5-Snp Haplotypes, Carina M. Schlebusch, Himla Soodyall

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The San and Khoe people currently represent remnant groups of a much larger and widely distributed population of hunter gatherers and pastoralists who had exclusive occupation of southern Africa before the arrival of Bantu-speaking groups in the past 1,200 years and sea-borne immigrants within the last 350 years. Genetic studies (mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome) conducted on San and Khoe groups revealed that they harbour some the most divergent lineages found in living peoples throughout the world. Recently, high-density autosomal SNP-array studies confirmed the early divergence of Khoe-San population groups from all other human populations. The present study made use of …

Migration Of The Swine Influenza Virus -Δ Cluster Hemagglutinin Nlinked Glycosylation Site From N142 To N144 Results In Loss Of Antibody Cross-Reactivity, Ben Hause, Douglas L. Stine, Zizhang Sheng, Zhao Wang, Suvobrata Chakravarty, Randy R. Simonson, Feng Li

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Routine antigenic characterization of swine influenza virus isolates in a high-throughput serum neutralization (HTSN) assay found that approximately 20% of isolates were not neutralized by a panel of reference antisera. Genetic analysis revealed that nearly all of the neutralization-resistant isolates possessed a seasonal human-lineage hemagglutinin (HA; δ cluster). Subsequent sequencing analysis of full-length HA identified a conserved N144 residue present only in neutralization-resistant strains. N144 lies in a predicted N-linked glycosylation consensus sequence, i.e., N-X-S/T (where X is any amino acid except for proline). Interestingly, neutralization-sensitive viruses all had predicted N-linked glycosylation sites at N137 or N142, with threonine (T) …

Achieving High Accuracy Prediction Of Minimotifs, Tian Mi, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Jerlin Camilus Merlin, Michael R. Gryk, Martin Schiller Sep 2012

Achieving High Accuracy Prediction Of Minimotifs, Tian Mi, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Jerlin Camilus Merlin, Michael R. Gryk, Martin Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The low complexity of minimotif patterns results in a high false-positive prediction rate, hampering protein function prediction. A multi-filter algorithm, trained and tested on a linear regression model, support vector machine model, and neural network model, using a large dataset of verified minimotifs, vastly improves minimotif prediction accuracy while generating few false positives. An optimal threshold for the best accuracy reaches an overall accuracy above 90%, while a stringent threshold for the best specificity generates less than 1% false positives or even no false positives and still produces more than 90% true positives for the linear regression and neural network …

Long-Term Effects Of Estradiol Replacement In The Olfactory System, Britto P. Nathan, Michael Tonsor, Robert G. Struble Sep 2012

Long-Term Effects Of Estradiol Replacement In The Olfactory System, Britto P. Nathan, Michael Tonsor, Robert G. Struble

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Olfactory dysfunction often precedes other clinical symptoms in chronic neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Estrogen deficiency and apoE genotype are known risk factors in these diseases and these factors also affect olfaction. Therefore we examined the effects of estradiol replacement following ovariectomy on expression of apoE and markers of cell proliferation, neuronal maturation, synaptogenesis and reactive gliosis in the primary olfactory pathway of wild-type (WT) and apoE knockout (KO) mice. Estradiol replacement increased apoE staining in the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers. Estradiol increased astrocyte density and olfactory epithelium (OE) thickness regardless of the genotype. In addition estradiol …
