Looking In The Mouth For Noninvasive Gene Expression-Based Methods To Detect Oral, Oropharyngeal, And Systemic Cancer, Alexander J. Adami Sep 2012

Looking In The Mouth For Noninvasive Gene Expression-Based Methods To Detect Oral, Oropharyngeal, And Systemic Cancer, Alexander J. Adami

UCHC Articles - Research

Noninvasive diagnosis, whether by sampling body fluids, body scans, or other technique, has the potential to simplify early cancer detection. A classic example is Pap smear screening, which has helped to reduce cervical cancer 75% over the last 50 years. No test is error-free; the real concern is sufficient accuracy combined with ease of use. This paper will discuss methods that measure gene expression or epigenetic markers in oral cells or saliva to diagnose oral and pharyngeal cancers, without requiring surgical biopsy. Evidence for lung and other distal cancer detection is also reviewed.

Achieving High Accuracy Prediction Of Minimotifs, Tian Mi, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Jerlin C. Merlin, Michael R. Gryk Sep 2012

Achieving High Accuracy Prediction Of Minimotifs, Tian Mi, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Jerlin C. Merlin, Michael R. Gryk

UCHC Articles - Research

The low complexity of minimotif patterns results in a high false-positive prediction rate, hampering protein function prediction. A multi-filter algorithm, trained and tested on a linear regression model, support vector machine model, and neural network model, using a large dataset of verified minimotifs, vastly improves minimotif prediction accuracy while generating few false positives. An optimal threshold for the best accuracy reaches an overall accuracy above 90%, while a stringent threshold for the best specificity generates less than 1% false positives or even no false positives and still produces more than 90% true positives for the linear regression and neural network …

Herpes Simplex Viruses: Mechanisms Of Dna Replication, Sandra K. Weller Sep 2012

Herpes Simplex Viruses: Mechanisms Of Dna Replication, Sandra K. Weller

UCHC Articles - Research

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encodes seven proteins necessary for viral DNA synthesis—UL9 (origin-binding protein), ICP8 (single-strand DNA [ssDNA]-binding protein), UL30/UL42 (polymerase), and UL5/UL8/UL52 (helicase/primase). It is our intention to provide an up-to-date analysis of our understanding of the structures of these replication proteins and how they function during HSV replication. The potential roles of host repair and recombination proteins will also be discussed.

Gabra2 Genotype, Impulsivity, And Body Mass, Lance O. Bauer

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

The goal of this study was to test a hypothesis associating impulsivity with an elevated body mass index (BMI).

Methods

To this end, we examined associations of BMI with putative genetic, neurophysiological, psychiatric, and psychological indicators of impulsivity in 78 women and 74 men formerly dependent on alcohol or drugs. A second analysis was designed to test the replicability of the genetic findings in an independent sample of 109 women and 111 men with a similar history of substance dependence.

Results

The results of the first analysis showed that BMI was positively correlated with Total and Nonplanning Scale Scores …

The Mob And Ford Motor Company: The Seventh Circuit's Enterprising Approach To The Rico Double Jeopardy Problem, Rita Greggio Sep 2012

The Mob And Ford Motor Company: The Seventh Circuit's Enterprising Approach To The Rico Double Jeopardy Problem, Rita Greggio

Seventh Circuit Review

Conspiracies that overlap in time, place, persons, and objectives are often charged under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, a complex statutory scheme that criminalizes the on-going and multifaceted activities of illicit enterprises like the mob. Such prosecutions, however, are particularly susceptible to double jeopardy claims. The Constitution's double jeopardy clause protects defendants from multiple prosecutions or punishments for the same offense. Although the Supreme Court has held that this constitutional protection is a fundamental right, courts have struggled to establish guidelines for determining the parameters of the term "same offense." This struggle is at the heart of …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The effect of consumers on their resources has been demonstrated in many systems but is often confounded by trophic interactions with other consumers. Consumers may also have behavioral and life history adaptations to each other and to co-occurring predators that may additionally modulate their particular roles in ecosystems. We experimentally excluded large consumers from tile periphyton, leaves and natural benthic substrata using submerged electrified frames in three stream reaches with overlapping consumer assemblages in Trinidad, West Indies. Concurrently, we assessed visits to (nonelectrified) control frames by the three most common large consumers–primarily insectivorous killifish (Rivulus hartii), omnivorous guppies …

Genomics and Precision Medicine Faculty Publications

Galectins are pleiotropic carbohydrate-binding lectins involved in inflammation, growth/differentiation, and tissue remodeling. The functional role of galectins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is unknown. Expression studies revealed increases in galectin-1 mRNA and protein in spinal cords from SOD1 G93A mice, and in galectin-3 and -9 mRNAs and proteins in spinal cords of both SOD1G93A mice and sporadic ALS patients. As the increase in galectin-3 appeared in early presymptomatic stages and increased progressively through to end stage of disease in the mouse, it was selected for additional study, where it was found to be mainly expressed by microglia. Galectin-3 antagonists …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Knowledge of environmental factors influencing demography of weed species will improve understanding of current and future weed invasions. The objective of this study was to quantify regional-scale variation in vital rates of giant ragweed and common sunflower. To accomplish this objective, a common field experiment was conducted across seven sites between 2006 and 2008 throughout the north central U.S. maize belt. Demographic parameters of both weed species were measured in intra- and interspecific competitive environments, and environmental data were collected within site-years. Site was the strongest predictor of belowground vital rates (summer and winter seed survival and seedling recruitment), indicating …

Phthalate Exposure Changes The Metabolic Profile Of Cardiac Muscle Cells, Nikki G. Posnack, Luther M. Swift, Matthew W. Kay, Norman H. Lee, Narine Sarvazyan

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Phthalates are common plasticizers present in medical-grade plastics and other everyday products. They can also act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and have been linked to the rise in metabolic disorders. However, the effect of phthalates on cardiac metabolism remains largely unknown.

Objectives: We examined the effect of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) on the metabolic profile of cardiomyocytes because alterations in metabolic processes can lead to cell dysfunction.

Methods: Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were treated with DEHP at a concentration and duration comparable to clinical exposure (50–100 μg/mL, 72 hr). We assessed the effect of DEHP on gene expression using microarray analysis. Physiological responses …

Investigation Of Inflation Forecasting, Qizhi He, Hong Shen, Zhongwen Tong Sep 2012

Investigation Of Inflation Forecasting, Qizhi He, Hong Shen, Zhongwen Tong

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Forecasting methods of the neural network, ARIMA, ARIMA-GARCH, exponential smoothing and others are introduced. Then using U.S. inflation data, based on the out-of-sample forecasting test, the paper studies the advantages and disadvantages of these methods by the empirical comparisons. The empirical results show that, firstly, from the superior to the inferior, the ranking order of the six methods are, the ARIMA-GARCH, ARIMA, neural networks, median method of autoregressive model, least squares method of autoregressive model, exponential smoothing, no matter based on sample mean absolute error or absolute error for one-step forecasting, or absolute error for two-steps forecasting. Secondly, the ARIMA-GARCH …

Semi-Supervised Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based On Direction Energy And Texture Intensity, Ting Yun Sep 2012

Semi-Supervised Ultrasound Image Segmentation Based On Direction Energy And Texture Intensity, Ting Yun

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

For the ultrasound images accurate segmentation problem, this paper proposes a novel SVM semi-supervised segmentation method based on major features in curvelet domain. Firstly, ultrasound images were decomposed into different directions and frequencies in the curvelet domain, then the cauchy model was used to simulate curvelet coefficients distribution, thus the main distribution of the curvelet coefficients were extracted to reduce the algorithm time complexity; Secondly after curvelet inverse transform we designed texture analysis method to distinguish texture intensity of every blocks among each sub-bands, then elected maximum K numbers energy sub-bands accroding to the strong texture characteristic, followly extracted features …

Analysis Of A Genetic Isolate: The Case Of Carloforte (Italy), R. Robledo, L. Corrias, V. Bachis, N. Puddu, A. Mameli, G. Vona, C. M. Calò

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

We reviewed data collected during several studies concerning the genetic isolate of Carloforte (Sardinia, Italy) and analyzed new data on Y-chromosome markers. Carloforte is also a language island, where people still speaks Tabarchino, an archaic form of Ligurian dialect. Demographic data indicate that, in the early years of its history, Carloforte population was characterized by a high degree of endogamy and consanguinity rates that started to decrease around 1850, when marriages with Sardinian people began to occur more frequently. Cultural factors, mainly language, account for the high endogamy. Genetic data from classical markers, mtDNA and Ychromosome markers confirmed the strong …
