Hyperspectral Imaging For Non-Contact Analysis Of Forensic Traces, Patrick J. Cullen, G. Edelman, T. Van Leeuwen, M. Aalders, E. Gaston

Articles

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) integrates conventional imaging and spectroscopy, to obtain both spatial and spectral information from a specimen. This technique enables investigators to analyze the chemical composition of traces and simultaneously visualize their spatial distribution. HSI offers significant potential for the detection, visualization, identification and age estimation of forensic traces. The rapid, non-destructive and non-contact features of HSI mark its suitability as an analytical tool for forensic science. This paper provides an overview of the principles, instrumentation and analytical techniques involved in hyperspectral imaging. We describe recent advances in HSI technology motivating forensic science applications, e.g. the development of portable …

Gatekeepers And Goalposts: The Need For A New Regulatory Paradigm For Whole Genome Sequence Results, Trevor Woodage Oct 2012

Gatekeepers And Goalposts: The Need For A New Regulatory Paradigm For Whole Genome Sequence Results, Trevor Woodage

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The ability to obtain a person’s whole genome sequence for a cost of one thousand dollars is nearly here. Many clinicians expect that this will usher in an era of personalized medicine by allowing the development of individualized disease-risk profiles, preventive medicine strategies, and treatment options. However, it is not clear that the regulatory strategy that currently controls the approval and availability of more limited genetic tests—typically meant to investigate one or a small number of disease or other traits—provides a satisfactory framework for whole genome sequence testing.

This Perspective takes the position that the generation of whole genome sequence …

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah Oct 2012

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah

Master's Projects

The mechanism and role of RNA secondary structure elements in the replication and translation of human positive-strand RNA viruses remains poorly understood. These secondary structures are formed when a single RNA strand folds over and base pairs with itself, forming various types of loop structures. RNA strands fold into specific shapes. This unique shape for each nucleic acid chain is the most stable state it can adopt. The lower the energy, i.e., the fold with highest number of base pairs, the higher the stability of the structure. The Dynamic Programming technique, such as the one used in Nussinov- Jacobson algorithm, …

An Expeditious Iodine-Catalyzed Synthesis Of 3-Pyrrole-Substituted 2-Azetidinones, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Jessica Cruz, Ram N. Yadav, Bimal K. Banik Oct 2012

An Expeditious Iodine-Catalyzed Synthesis Of 3-Pyrrole-Substituted 2-Azetidinones, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Jessica Cruz, Ram N. Yadav, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

2-Azetidinones and pyrroles are two highly important classes of molecules in organic and medicinal chemistry. A green and practical method for the synthesis of 3-pyrrole-substituted 2-azetidinones using catalytic amounts of molecular iodine under microwave irradiation has been developed. Following this method, a series of 3-pyrrole-substituted 2-azetidinones have been synthesized with a variety of substituents at N-1 and at C-4. The procedure is equally effective for mono-as well as polyaromatic groups at the N-1 position of the 2-azetidinone ring. The C-4 substituent has no influence either on the yield or the rate of the reaction. Optically pure 3-pyrrole-substituted 2-azetidinones have also …

Transcending Boundaries: Moroccan Political Thought As A Transnational Platform, And Communities In The Realm Of Activism, Leah Siegel Oct 2012

Transcending Boundaries: Moroccan Political Thought As A Transnational Platform, And Communities In The Realm Of Activism, Leah Siegel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My research concerns how individual protestors of the February 20th Movement relate to the rest of the Arab Spring and their own society. I conducted several interviews during November 2012 with participants of the movement currently living in Rabat, each one lasting between 30 minutes to two hours. I initially intended this study to focus on the movement’s relations to the rest of the Arab Spring, but found in my interviews that this question is much more tangential than the question of how participants of the movement relate to their own society. What I discovered was that while the events …

Genetically Modified Organisms As A Potential Solution For Decreasing Hunger In Developing Nations: An Ethical Paradox, Rachel Sherman Oct 2012

Genetically Modified Organisms As A Potential Solution For Decreasing Hunger In Developing Nations: An Ethical Paradox, Rachel Sherman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I first became aware of and interested in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the “Politics of Food in America” course I took spring semester of 2012, my junior year at the University of Texas at Austin. I was intrigued by the fact that such a concept was so unfamiliar to the public, yet genetically engineered products were in our everyday foods. Though I received a basic introduction to GMOs through my course, I was curious to learn more about the regulatory practices of GM crops and the political relationships sustained by GM firms and government agencies in the United States. …

Bent Out Of Shape Embodied Knowledge In The Art Of Copper Repoussé, Tierney Brown

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over the course of a 1,300 year history the Newar art of moulding copper into fine architectural ornaments and full bodied sacred figures has been passed through family lineages and working apprenticeships. Presently the copper repoussé technique has continued to elude a regulated school format instead favoring individual apprenticeships in the workshops and homes of more experienced artists. In a two week short-apprenticeship and study in Sajan Raj Shakya's workshop in Mangchal Tole, Patan I was instructed in the basics of creating copper forms through repoussé and chasing. This experience is documented both in terms of the delineated process for …

To Huddle Or Not To Huddle: That Is The Question. A Brief Study Of The Basis For Huddling Behavior In Eulemur Rubriventer, Tessa Behnke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Common behaviors observed in primates may have important biological and social foundations. This study looks at huddling behavior in several groups of Eulemur rubriventer in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar, in order to compare the functions of huddling in relation to thermoregulation and social bonding. The proportions of time spent huddling as functions of rainfall and ambient temperature were used to explore the possibility of huddling as a means of thermoregulation. A positive relationship between loose huddling behavior and temperature was deemed significant. Data collected on proximity of individuals to each other (nearest neighbor) was able to establish a significant correlation …

A Comparison Study Of A Bird Population In Lake Alaotra: The Effects Of A Protected Area, Sonya R. Kaufman Oct 2012

A Comparison Study Of A Bird Population In Lake Alaotra: The Effects Of A Protected Area, Sonya R. Kaufman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Lake Alaotra, the largest lake in Madagascar, is well known for its diverse plant and animal communities. It is home to three critically endangered endemic species, the Alaotran gentle lemur (Hapelemur griseus alaotrensis), Alaotra Little Grebe (Tachybaptus rufolavatus), and Madagascar pochard (Aythya innotata). Widespread habitat destruction by fire and clear-cutting is destroying the marshland vegetation of the lake, and siltation from erosion runoff and rice field creation is resulting in the ever-decreasing size of the lake. This study looked at the effectiveness of the protected area, Park Bandro, in preserving species diversity, relative abundances, …

Experimental Validation Of Phase Using Nomarski Microscopy With An Extended Fried Algorithm, Scott A. Prahl, Amanda Dayton, Kyle Juedes, Erik J. Sánchez, Rafael Paez López, Donald D. Duncan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reconstruction of an image (or shape or wavefront) from measurements of the derivatives of the image in two orthogonal directions is a common problem. We demonstrate how a particular reconstructor, commonly referred to as the Fried algorithm, can be used with megapixel derivative images to recover the original image. Large datasets are handled by breaking the derivative images into smaller tiles, applying the Fried algorithm and stitching the tiles back together. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated using differential interference contrast microscopy on a known test object.

Pediatric Pharmacogenomics: A Systematic Assessment Of Ontogeny And Genetic Variation To Guide The Design Of Statin Studies In Children., Jonathan B. Wagner, J Steven Leeder

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The dose-exposure-response relationship for drugs may differ in pediatric patients compared with adults. Many clinical studies have established drug dose-exposure relationships across the pediatric age spectrum; however, genetic variation was seldom included. This article applies a systematic approach to determine the relative contribution of development and genetic variation on drug disposition and response using HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors as a model. Application of the approach drives the collection of information relevant to understanding the potential contribution of ontogeny and genetic variation to statin dose-exposure-response in children, and identifies important knowledge deficits to be addressed through the design of future studies.

Brain and Mind Institute

Molecular mechanisms behind the etiology and pathophysiology of major depressive disorder and suicide remain largely unknown. Recent molecular studies of expression of serotonin, GABA and CRH receptors in various brain regions have demonstrated that molecular factors may contribute to the development of depressive disorder and suicide behaviour. Here, we used microarray analysis to examine the expression of genes in brain tissue (frontopolar cortex) of individuals who had been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and died by suicide, and those who had died suddenly without a history of depression. We analyzed the list of differentially expressed genes using pathway analysis, which …

West Nile Virus Seroreversion And The Influence Of Herd Immunity On Disease Risk In A Long-Term Study Of Free-Ranging Birds, Eileen M. Mckee Oct 2012

West Nile Virus Seroreversion And The Influence Of Herd Immunity On Disease Risk In A Long-Term Study Of Free-Ranging Birds, Eileen M. Mckee

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The transmission and amplification of West Nile virus (WNV) is driven by the number of susceptible avian hosts. The quantity of susceptible hosts is determined by 1) recruitment of juvenile birds during the breeding season, 2) adult birds previously unexposed to WNV, and 3) adult birds with waning antibody titers. Although rarely tested, avian herd immunity and seroreversion could have a direct impact on Culex infection rate, a proxy for the reproductive number of WNV. In this study, we utilized data from a seven year study investigating WNV transmission ecology in suburban Chicago, Illinois. We tested the hypothesis that herd …

Chemical Proteomics-Based Analysis Of Off-Target Binding Profiles For Rosiglitazone And Pioglitazone: Clues For Assessing Potential For Cardiotoxicity, Brian R. Hoffmann, Mohamed F. El-Mansy, Daniel S. Sem, Andrew S. Greene

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Drugs exert desired and undesired effects based on their binding interactions with protein target(s) and off-target(s), providing evidence for drug efficacy and toxicity. Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone possess a common functional core, glitazone, which is considered a privileged scaffold upon which to build a drug selective for a given target—in this case, PPARγ. Herein, we report a retrospective analysis of two variants of the glitazone scaffold, pioglitazone and rosiglitazone, in an effort to identify off-target binding events in the rat heart to explain recently reported cardiovascular risk associated with these drugs. Our results suggest that glitazone has affinity for dehydrogenases, consistent …
