Autonomous Motherhood And The Law: Exploring The Narratives Of Canada’S Single Mothers By Choice, Fiona Kelly Jan 2012

Autonomous Motherhood And The Law: Exploring The Narratives Of Canada’S Single Mothers By Choice, Fiona Kelly

Canadian Journal of Family Law

In the past three decades, single mothers by choice (SMCs) have emerged as a new and rapidly growing component of Canada's single mother population. SMCs are women who choose to have a child, usually via some form of assisted conception, with the intention that they be their child's sole parent. While SMCs are part of an increasing number of non-normative family configurations in Canada, they pose some unique social and legal questions. However, unlike some other non-normative families, such as lesbian and gay families, SMCs have received very little academic attention and almost none pertaining to the role of law …

Alignment And Composition Of Laminin-Polycaprolactone Nanofiber Blends Enhance Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Rebekah A. Neal, Sunil S. Tholpady, Patricia L. Foley, Nathan Swami, Roy C. Ogle, Edward A. Botchwey Jan 2012

Alignment And Composition Of Laminin-Polycaprolactone Nanofiber Blends Enhance Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Rebekah A. Neal, Sunil S. Tholpady, Patricia L. Foley, Nathan Swami, Roy C. Ogle, Edward A. Botchwey

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

Peripheral nerve transection occurs commonly in traumatic injury, causing deficits distal to the injury site. Conduits for repair currently on the market are hollow tubes; however, they often fail due to slow regeneration over long gaps. To facilitate increased regeneration speed and functional recovery, the ideal conduit should provide biochemically relevant signals and physical guidance cues, thus playing an active role in regeneration. To that end, laminin and lamininpolycaprolactone (PCL) blend nanofibers were fabricated to mimic peripheral nerve basement membrane. In vitro assays established 10% (wt) laminin content is sufficient to retain neurite-promoting effects of laminin. In addition, modified collector …

Interpretations Of Law And Ethics In Muslim Contexts, Aptin Khanbaghi Jan 2012

Interpretations Of Law And Ethics In Muslim Contexts, Aptin Khanbaghi

Muslim Civilisations Abstracts

Law within Muslim societies is not uniform; even within Muslim majority regions it can be interpreted differently according to different denominations and legal traditions. As law forms an integral part of normative social practice, reflecting the moral and ethical principles of a society, it is important to highlight the diversity of interpretations to better enable the study of law along with the ethical principles of a community.

Volume 2 of the MCA series brings together some of the many unheard voices of scholars studying law and ethics in languages other than English. It features 200 abstracts with bibliographical details in …

Cardamine angustata var. ouachitana, a wildflower in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), was described by Smith in 1982 to include a form of Cardamine found only in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. This variety is morphologically very similar to typical Cardamine angustata. The major difference noted by Smith for the two varieties was the complete lack of leaf hairs (trichomes) in the new variety, whereas typical Cardamine angustata normally possesses trichomes. However, Al-Shehbaz rejected the variety ouachitana and reduced it to synonymy with the typical C. angustata. The recommendation of Al-Shehbaz has been followed and the taxon Cardamine angustata var. ouachitana …

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... .' So might one describe the contrasting portraits of DNA's ascension in the criminal justice system that are drawn in David Kaye's The Double Helix and the Law of Evidence and Sheldon Krimsky and Tania Simoncelli's Genetic Justice: DNA Data Banks, Criminal Investigations, and Civil Liberties. For Kaye, the double helix stands as the icon of twenty-first-century achievement, a science menaced primarily by the dolts (lawyers, judges, and the occasional analyst) who misuse it. For Krimsky and Simoncelli, DNA is a seductive forensic tool that is prone …

At common law, children born out of wedlock were legally disfavored — filius nullius, the child of no one. But according to an inherited legal progress narrative, all of this changed in 1968 when the U.S. Supreme Court decided Levy v. Louisiana and Glona v. American Guarantee & Liability Insurance Co., ushering in a new era in which the common law tradition that imposed serious disadvantages on non-marital children gave way to a more liberal era where the sins of the parents would not be visited upon the children. More recently however, illegitimacy seems to be making a comeback. In …

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

Momentum will serve several functions in the greater Dallas community. At its most basic level, it will help to inspire a passion and excitement for the study of science. Bridging the gap between disciplines, this publication will focus on ideas about science and technology (like a scientific journal) and will promote intellectual exploration in the approachable manner of a literary magazine.

Health Literacy Dallas, Doug Mcnabb, Aliya Prasla, Mary C. Corey, Matt Gayer

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

Health literacy is a major issue in American health. Health literacy pertains to how patients obtain, understand, and use health information, as well as how medical professionals communicate medical information to their patients and the public. The economic costs of health literacy are conservatively estimated at over $70 billion annually in the United States. With recent alterations to the JCAHO standards, as well as pressure from new medical reimbursement legislation, the economics of health communication are only increasing in importance. More importantly though, is the human impact health literacy issues have on Americans. One in seven Americans struggle t read …

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

In 1993, the proposed Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project of Waxahachie, Texas, was cancelled. This massive structure would have been three times as large as the recently completed Large Hadron Collider in Geneva and many times more powerful. With its cancellation, two generations of physics progress have been lost for the United States. This singular event is epitomical of a broader set of issues in the United States; namely, the issues of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, their funding, and research and development in these fields.

In the second decade of the 21st century, we face a continuation …

Big iDeas 2012 Proposals

Young adults leaving the foster child care system often experience hardships that many of their peers do not have to address. Some of these former foster children become victims of homelessness, higher rates of unemployment, poverty, and disproportionate rates of incarceration. Nationally, only about 50 percent of these young people earn a high school diploma and less than two percent of this cohort pursues higher education in either the two-year or four-year sectors.

Due to a myriad of systematic problems and social conditions, the minds of these young adults become limited to the vast opportunities that could be available to …

Leaving The Big Deal: Consequences And Next Steps, Jonathan Nabe, David C. Fowler

Many libraries are facing difficult fiscal climates with serials inflation, budget cutbacks, and reductions in allocations requiring difficult collection management decisions. Libraries may find their flexibility to plan and react unduly restricted due to being contracted to one or more Big Deals, in which they are obligated to buy large, inflexible title lists from big publishers for a set price. This presentation discusses the experience of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the University of Oregon in leaving Big Deals, provides data on impacts on interlibrary loans, community response, and collection budgets, details the steps required before and after the decision, …

Everyone regardless of age and gender should be given an opportunity to learn, especially to read. Literacy improves lives of people in tremendous ways. However, for individuals with cognitive and memory impairment, learning to read has been a great challenge. In response to this challenge, this single subject case study examined the reading ability of an adult with cognitive and memory impairments, using a combination of five reading strategies. These strategies are: improving word recognition, building fluency, improving reading comprehension, using special remedial methods and using computers to teach reading. The five reading strategies were adapted from the teaching strategies …

Translation Of Malaysian Legal Terminology And Lawyers' Perspectives On Linguistic Borrowing / Phoebe Lim Ian Yee, Phoebe Ian Yee Lim

Student Works (2010-2019)

This dissertation studies the translation of legal terminology from the English to the Malay language, in particular borrowings from English. The purpose of this study is to investigate the forms and functions nature of these legal borrowings and their usage among legal professionals. The legislative text of Evidence Act 1950 is used as the study data. Textual analysis is done based on Mashudi Kader’s (1994) categorisations of the source of Malay legal terms with some modification adapted from Newmark (1988) and Haugen (1953). Interviews and questionnaires were also used as instruments to find out lawyers’ reactions towards legal borrowings and …

Strategi Komunikasi Kanak-Kanak Jepun Prasekolah / Azni Ahmad, Ahmad Azni

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study was conducted with the objective to see the communication strategies used by Japanese preschool children during play. In addition, this study will also discuss the values of harmony in the communication strategies detected. The respondents were children from aged between 3 to 6 years old who were enrolled in a Japanese preschool in Kuala Lumpur. Naturalistic observation is applied as an instrument to collect data. While the data was transcribed, then analysed by using Corsaro (1986) Communication Model as guideline. The findings have identified questions, call, protest, demand and repetition as strategies used by the respondents. In addition, …
