Further Support For Mental Health Parity Law And Mandatory Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Benefits, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2012

Further Support For Mental Health Parity Law And Mandatory Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Benefits, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

In this Article, I provide additional support for my recent proposal (All Illnesses Are (Not) Created Equal: Reforming Federal Mental Health Insurance Law, Harvard Journal on Legislation, Vol. 49, forthcoming 2012.) to extend federal mental health parity law and mandatory mental health and substance use disorder benefits to all public healthcare program beneficiaries and private health plan members. I begin by examining health-related doctrine outside the context of mental health insurance law, including disability discrimination law, civil rights and human rights law, health information confidentiality law, healthcare reform law, and child and adult health and welfare law, and …

Stable Highly Conductive Zno Via Reduction Of Zn Vacancies, David C. Look, Timothy C. Droubay, Scott A. Chambers

Physics Faculty Publications

Growth of Ga-doped ZnO by pulsed laser deposition at 200 °C in an ambient of Ar and H2produces a resistivity of 1.5 × 10−4 Ω-cm, stable to 500 °C. The resistivity can be further reduced to 1.2 × 10−4 Ω-cm by annealing on Zn foil, which reduces the compensating Zn-vacancy acceptor concentration NA to 5 × 1019 cm−3, only 3% of the Ga-donor concentration ND of 1.6 × 1021 cm−3, with ND and NA determined from a degenerate mobility theory. The plasmon-resonance wavelength is only 1060 …

Tourism, Persistence, And Change: Sherpa Spirituality And Place In Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) National Park And Buffer Zone, Nepal, Jeremy Spoon

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Ecotourism and cultural tourism are emerging as vehicles for many of the world’s indigenous peoples to integrate into the global market economy. The ecological knowledge and understanding of these societies may in turn be affected by these nascent industries. As part of shifting human-environment relationships, tourism can influence place-based spirituality. In this manuscript, I describe research on how tourism affected Khumbu Sherpa place-based spiritual values in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone, Nepal. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Sherpa embodied dual overlapping conceptions of sacred landscape that connected people to place in some environmentally sustainable ways. Since the 1960s, …

Historical Analysis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon, Pesticide, And Metal Contamination In Clam Bayou, Florida, Renee A. Price

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), pesticide, and metal contamination in estuarine sediments often results from runoff of residential and commercial developments that are adjacent to coastal areas. This study examines contaminants in surface sediments of Clam Bayou, St. Petersburg, Florida. The purpose was to examine the spatial distribution of contaminants, to relate contaminant concentrations to sediment type, to determine potential sources of contamination, and the history of deposition. Contaminant concentrations were compared with those in sediments from Terra Ceia Bay, which is part of the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve in Lower Tampa Bay. Terra Ceia Bay, therefore served as a control …

Update Of Barton Springs Water Quality Data Analysis - Austin, Texas, Martha Turner

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Barton Springs, the major discharge point for the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer, is primary habitat for the endangered Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum), supplies a portion of Austin's drinking water, provides winter and drought baseflow to the Colorado River downstream, and is an important recreational resource. Significant time trends in Barton Springs have not been previously identified. However, the passage of time, continuing development, and increased data collection efforts combined with recognition of the importance of variable recharge/discharge conditions has led to additional data analysis. The current analysis of long term water quality records (1975-1999) from Barton …

Berberine is one of the main alkaloids found in the Chinese herb Huang lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), which has been reported to have multiple pharmacological activities. This study aimed to analyze the molecular targets of berberine based on literature data followed by a pathway analysis using the PANTHER program. PANTHER analysis of berberine targets showed that the most classes of molecular functions include receptor binding, kinase activity, protein binding, transcription activity, DNA binding, and kinase regulator activity. Based on the biological process classification of in vitro berberine targets, those targets related to signal transduction, intracellular signalling cascade, cell surface …

The present study used a coordinated analyses approach to examine the association of physical activity and cognitive change in four longitudinal studies. A series of multilevel growth models with physical activity included both as a fixed (between-person) and time-varying (within-person) predictor of four domains of cognitive function (reasoning, memory, fluency, and semantic knowledge) was used. Baseline physical activity predicted fluency, reasoning and memory in two studies. However, there was a consistent pattern of positive relationships between time-specific changes in physical activity and time-specific changes in cognition, controlling for expected linear trajectories over time, across all four studies. This pattern was …

Social activity is typically viewed as part of an engaged lifestyle that may help mitigate the deleterious effects of advanced age on cognitive function. As such, social activity has been examined in relation to cognitive abilities later in life. However, longitudinal evidence for this hypothesis thus far remains inconclusive. The current study sought to clarify the relationship between social activity and cognitive function over time using a coordinated data analysis approach across four longitudinal studies. A series of multilevel growth models with social activity included as a covariate is presented. Four domains of cognitive function were assessed: reasoning, memory, fluency, …

Peripheral Nerve Repair With Cultured Schwann Cells: Getting Closer To The Clinics, Maria Carolina O. Rodrigues, Antonio Antunes Rodrigues, Loren E. Glover, Julio Voltarelli, Cesar V. Borlongan

Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications

Peripheral nerve injuries are a frequent and disabling condition, which affects 13 to 23 per 100.000 persons each year. Severe cases, with structural disruption of the nerve, are associated with poor functional recovery. The experimental treatment using nerve grafts to replace damaged or shortened axons is limited by technical difficulties, invasiveness, and mediocre results. Other therapeutic choices include the adjunctive application of cultured Schwann cells and nerve conduits to guide axonal growth. The bone marrow is a rich source of mesenchymal cells, which can be differentiated in vitro into Schwann cells and subsequently engrafted into the damaged nerve. Alternatively, undifferentiated …

Development And Characterization Of Anti-Nitr9 Antibodies, Radhika N. Shah, Ivan Rodriguez-Nunez, Donna D. Eason, Robert N. Haire, Julien Y. Bertrand, Valērie Wittamer, David Traver, Shila K. Nordone

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The novel immune-type receptors (NITRs), which have been described in numerous bony fish species, are encoded by multigene families of inhibitory and activating receptors and are predicted to be functional orthologs to the mammalian natural killer cell receptors (NKRs). Within the zebrafish NITR family, nitr9 is the only gene predicted to encode an activating receptor. However, alternative RNA splicing generates three distinct nitr9 transcripts, each of which encodes a different isoform. Although nitr9 transcripts have been detected in zebrafish lymphocytes, the specific hematopoietic lineage(s) that expresses Nitr9 remains to be determined. In an effort to better understand the role of …

Autonomous Motherhood And The Law: Exploring The Narratives Of Canada’S Single Mothers By Choice, Fiona Kelly

Canadian Journal of Family Law

In the past three decades, single mothers by choice (SMCs) have emerged as a new and rapidly growing component of Canada's single mother population. SMCs are women who choose to have a child, usually via some form of assisted conception, with the intention that they be their child's sole parent. While SMCs are part of an increasing number of non-normative family configurations in Canada, they pose some unique social and legal questions. However, unlike some other non-normative families, such as lesbian and gay families, SMCs have received very little academic attention and almost none pertaining to the role of law …
