Self-Assmbled Lithography-Free Fabrication Of Microchannels And Microfluidics In Polymers, Wintana Tadesse Kahsai

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Rapid, reliable and easy to implement approaches are needed for fabrication of circular microchannels in polymeric microfluidics. PDMS has been a choice of material in microfluidics and it is being used as prototype due to its unique property such as flexibility and transparency. Traditional method of fabrication such as photolithography and soft lithography are complicated and time consuming. In this thesis, a non-lithography and bottom-up self-assembled approach is shown. The resulting devices can have uses in many applications such as assays, biosensing, separation of mixtures, micro-mixing and bioreactors. This thesis presents novel approaches of manufacturing self-assembled microchannels in polydimethyleneoxide (PDMS) …

In Depth Analysis Of An Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear: Effects On The Mind And Body, Keimi Lew Jan 2012

In Depth Analysis Of An Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear: Effects On The Mind And Body, Keimi Lew

Whittier Scholars Program

Injuries have always been a major concern for athletes; anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common serious injuries around. With the increase in reported ACL injuries, this has become a sort of epidemic especially among female athletes. Female athletes are three times more likely to experience a knee injury than a male athlete competing in the same sport. Since this increase in the last decade, researchers have developed several different hypotheses as to why females are more likely to experience these injuries. With these injuries there is a physical aspect, however, it is much more than that, …

Curriculum Circus: Juggling Curriculum, Science, And The Arts, Domenica Devine Jan 2012

Curriculum Circus: Juggling Curriculum, Science, And The Arts, Domenica Devine

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Education should open the door to better lives and better jobs. The fact is that it does not. In part, there are many causes including rigidity, political interference, and the separation between disciplines that we teach without context and without dialogue with our students. Specifically, I think that we should use education as a way to help students make better choices and have a better life. One way we can do it is by reconciling science with the other disciplines. And that is what is at the heart of curriculum studies.

There is a pervasive belief that the Western ideology …

Sand fl ies are the only proven vector of the Leishmania parasite. Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania spp., a parasitic protozoan of the Trypanosomatidae family and poses an in creasingly important threat in Thailand. Recently, Cutaneous leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis have been found in several parts of Thailand. It is the blood-sucking female of the genus Phlebotomus spp. in Africa and Central Asia and Lutzomyia spp. in Central and South America. Phlebotomus argentipes is the principle vector of …

Biochemical Mechanism In Programmed Cell Death: An Overview, Panadda Rojpibulstit Jan 2012

Biochemical Mechanism In Programmed Cell Death: An Overview, Panadda Rojpibulstit

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Programmed cell death (PCD) is the cellular process in response with any cellular dangerous stimulus. It can be divided into several types depend on ultra-structural changes detected by electron transmission microscope and biochemical pathway involving in the processes. In conclusion, two main pathways relying on an initiating point has been proposed, i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic pathway. Intrinsic pathway is initiated by the mitochondrial permeabilization resulting in cytochrome c releasing out which then activated the caspase-9. While an extrinsic pathway is started off after cell surface death receptor bound with the death signal for example Fas ligand. This event finally triggers …

Design Of A Distributed Hadoop Solution For The Multiple Sequence Alignment Algorithm: Clustal Omega, Jurate Daugelaite

Theses

Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) of DNA and protein sequences is one of the most essential techniques in the fields of molecular biology, computational biology and bioinformatics. It aids the identification and prediction of three dimensional structures, primary functions and evolutionary relatedness amongst groups of species, organisms, and genes. Since as the completion of the Human Genome Project and with the advent of sequencing initiatives such as the Genome 10K project, the rate of genome sequencing has increased exponentially, producing vast amounts of DNA and protein sequences. MSA algorithms, when applied to such sequence data, can identify common homology, structure and …

Investigation Of Factors Influencing Trichloromethane Levels In Milk And Its Control., Siobhan Ryan Jan 2012

Investigation Of Factors Influencing Trichloromethane Levels In Milk And Its Control., Siobhan Ryan

Theses

Trichloromethane (TCM) is an undesirable chemical residue that can develop in milk. While TCM levels in milk are not within ranges of public health concern, it is important that minimal levels are maintained in order to promote the marketing of Irish dairy products abroad. Germany has enacted strict regulations on TCM concentrations in foodstuffs with a recommended level of0.002 mg/kg and re-analyse those milks, subsequent to cause identification and provision of advice on reducing TCM levels in milk. Milk samples were analysed using Gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection. The GC method was adapted and a standard curve was …

The Identification And Reduction Of Energy Streams Within The Pharmaceutical Sector Using Software Algorithms, Raymond Corbett Jan 2012

The Identification And Reduction Of Energy Streams Within The Pharmaceutical Sector Using Software Algorithms, Raymond Corbett

Theses

Pharmaceutical companies are under increasing financial pressure to optimise production costs, due to a growing number of products coming off patent, research and development costs increasing exponentially and the difficulty of bringing genuinely innovative products to market. Generic drug manufacturers are not exempt from these pressures; costs must be driven down by all drug manufacturers due to the increasingly competitive healthcare market.

The operating costs of a modern Pharmaceutical Plant run to several Million Euros per annum. Complex process’s involving the consumption of large amounts of energy, and hence costs, are a necessity. Any increase in the efficiency of a …

Association Of Ring-Necked Pheasants And Conservation Reserve Program-Grasslands During The Brood-Rearing Season In Eastern South Dakota, Joshua J. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grassland established through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has provided critical habitat for many wildlife species. Recent declines in CRP-grassland acreage attributed to changes in federal enrollment policy, increased biofuels production, and commodity prices may have negative consequences on wildlife populations. Conservation Reserve Program habitats have increased availability of quality nesting and over-winter cover for pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in regions where large-scale conversions of native grasslands to cropland have occurred. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of CRP-grasslands on pheasants across a large geographic region. Primary objectives of the study were to determine presence/absence of pheasants …

Lycopene Cyclase Paralog Crup Protects Against Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxygenic Photosynthetic Organisms, Louis M. T. Bradbury, Maria Shumskaya, Oren Tzfadia, Shi-Biao Wu, Edward J. Kennelly, Eleanore T. Wurtzel Jan 2012

Lycopene Cyclase Paralog Crup Protects Against Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxygenic Photosynthetic Organisms, Louis M. T. Bradbury, Maria Shumskaya, Oren Tzfadia, Shi-Biao Wu, Edward J. Kennelly, Eleanore T. Wurtzel

Publications and Research

In photosynthetic organisms, carotenoids serve essential roles in photosynthesis and photoprotection. A previous report designated CruP as a secondary lycopene cyclase involved in carotenoid biosynthesis [Maresca J, et al. (2007) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:11784–11789]. However, we found that cruP KO or cruP overexpression plants do not exhibit correspondingly reduced or increased production of cyclized carotenoids, which would be expected if CruP was a lycopene cyclase. Instead, we show that CruP aids in preventing accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby reducing accumulation of β-carotene-5,6-epoxide, a ROS-catalyzed autoxidation product, and inhibiting accumulation of anthocyanins, which are known chemical …

Some Reflections On Method And Policy In The Crowded House Of European Patent Law And Their Implications For India, Justine Pila Jan 2012

Some Reflections On Method And Policy In The Crowded House Of European Patent Law And Their Implications For India, Justine Pila

National Law School of India Review

The patent regimes of several countries face an interplay of different obligations today which has made it difficult to discern the methodology adopted in answering questions of patentability. Consider India, where the regime witnesses the tussle between obligations under domestic legislation and Fundamental Rights, and those imposed by the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. Harmonization of these competing obligations raises important questions of an appropriate methodology, the absence of which would reduce the intricate complexities into an apparent jumble. In this article, the author takes up this issue in the European context, specifically positing her arguments …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methamphetamine (METH), a highly addictive drug used worldwide, induces oxidative stress in various animal organs. Recent animal studies indicate that methamphetamine also induces oxidative stress in the retina, which is an em- bryonic extension of the forebrain. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the pro- tecttive effects of N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) against oxidative stress induced by METH in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. Our stud- ies showed that NACA protected against METH- induced oxidative stress in retinal pigment epithelial cells. Although METH significantly de- creased glutathione (GSH) levels and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondial- dehyde …

Neutron Repulsion, Oliver Manuel Jan 2012

Neutron Repulsion, Oliver Manuel

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Earth is connected gravitationally, magnetically and electrically to its heat source and the source of its chemical elements - a neutron star obscured from view by waste products in the photosphere. Neutron repulsion makes the solar core like the hot filament in an incandescent light bulb. Excited neutrons are emitted from the pulsar, decay to hydrogen, and partially fuse into the helium now trapped with it in the photosphere, like a frosted light bulb. Neutron repulsion is the overlooked source of energy, the keystone of an arch that locks together many earlier, puzzling observations: 1.) Excess 136Xe accompanied primordial …

Gendered Processes In Child Protection: 'Mother-Blaming' And The Erosion Of Men's Accountability, Majella Mulkeen Jan 2012

Gendered Processes In Child Protection: 'Mother-Blaming' And The Erosion Of Men's Accountability, Majella Mulkeen

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The Inquiry Report of the Roscommon Child Care Case (HSE, 2010) was the first Inquiry Report into intra-familial child abuse and neglect in the Irish context to explicitly identify a gender dimension to its findings. This paper seeks to build on these observations and argues that an analysis of the gendering processes that underlie understandings of and responses to neglect, violence and abuse can make child protection policy and practice more effective. The absence of an analysis which places gender at the core of policy and practice in child protection and family support raises serious questions about the differentiated responses …
