The Pharmacokinetics And Toxicology Of Aluminum In The Brain, Robert A. Yokel Jan 2012

The Pharmacokinetics And Toxicology Of Aluminum In The Brain, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The chemical forms (species) of aluminum in blood plasma and brain extracellular fluid are considered, as they are the candidates for brain aluminum uptake and efflux. The blood-brain barrier is the primary site of brain aluminum uptake. The mechanism of brain uptake of aluminum transferrin, long thought to be mediated by transferrin-receptor mediated endocytosis, requires further investigation. Brain Al citrate uptake has been attributed to the sodium-independent Lglutamate/ L-cystine exchanger system, system Xc-. Reports have suggested aluminum can compromise blood-brain barrier integrity, however the studies were conducted with aluminum concentrations greatly exceeding those seen in human blood plasma. Aluminum appeared …

Suburban Climate Change Efforts: Possibilities For Small And Nimble Cities Participating In State, Regional, National, And International Networks, Hari M. Osofsky Jan 2012

Suburban Climate Change Efforts: Possibilities For Small And Nimble Cities Participating In State, Regional, National, And International Networks, Hari M. Osofsky

Articles

This Article provides a novel analysis of the capacity of suburbs to play a constructive role in addressing climate change. Small suburban cities represent the majority of metropolitan populations and emissions; encouraging their mitigation efforts, in addition to those of large center cities, is critical. In contrast to the conventional critique of suburbs as an undifferentiated group of sprawling emitters, the Article analyzes pathways for different types of small, nimble, suburban governments to learn from other localities and find cost-effective approaches to reducing emissions. It intertwines scholarship on (1) cities, suburbs, and climate change, (2) the complex demography of suburbs, …

Identification Of Promoter Elements Within The Pils Loci Of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Daneel Maqbool Patoli Jan 2012

Identification Of Promoter Elements Within The Pils Loci Of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Daneel Maqbool Patoli

Honors Capstones

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the pathogen responsible for the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. Since gonorrhea is a prevalent infection disease, many antibiotics such as penicillin and ceftriaxone have been used to fight the bacterium, and treat the infection. However, a vaccine has yet to be discovered that can potentially prevent the infection from initially occurring. Due to the constant variability of the pilus structure of the bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae is extremely difficult to develop a vaccine for. Periodically, the bacterium will alter the structure of the pilus by slightly varying the genomic sequence responsible for making the pilE polypeptide. This occurs …

Understanding The Role Of Defects In The Radiation Response Of Nanoceria, Amit Kumar Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Defects In The Radiation Response Of Nanoceria, Amit Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanoscale cerium oxide (nanoceria) have shown to possess redox active property , and has been widely studied for potential use in catalysis, chemical-mechanical planarization, biomedical and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), etc. The redox state of nanoceria can be tuned by controlling the defects within the lattice and thus its physical and chemical properties. Perfect ceria lattice has fluorite structure and the research in last decade has shown that oxide and mixed oxide systems with pyrochlore and fluorite have better structural stability under high energy radiation. However, the current literature shows a limited number of studies on the effect of …

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt Jan 2012

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite a vast amount of research on Late Antiquity, little attention has been paid to certain figures that prove to be influential during this time. The focus of historians on Constantine I, the first Roman Emperor to allegedly convert to Christianity, has often come at the cost of ignoring Constantine's predecessor, Diocletian, sometimes known as the "Second Father of the Roman Empire". The success of Constantine's empire has often been attributed to the work and reforms of Diocletian, but there have been very few studies of the man beyond simple biography. This work will attempt to view three of Diocletian's …

Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Polyamine Transport System Probes And Their Application To Human Cancers, Aaron Muth Jan 2012

Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Polyamine Transport System Probes And Their Application To Human Cancers, Aaron Muth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mammalian polyamine transport system (PTS) has been of interest due to its roles in cancer and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Polyamines are essential growth factors which are tightly controlled via a balance of biosynthesis, metabolism, import, and export. This work focused on the development and biological testing of polyamine transport probes to help understand the molecular requirements of the PTS. This was mediated through the use of a CHO (PTS active) and CHO-MG* (PTS deficient) screen, where compounds demonstrating high toxicity in CHO and low toxicity in CHO-MG* were considered PTS selective. The first chapter focused on the development of …

Use Of An Activated Magnesium/Cosolvent System For The Desorption And Degradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Oxygenated Derivatives In Contaminated Soils, Marc Elie Jan 2012

Use Of An Activated Magnesium/Cosolvent System For The Desorption And Degradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Oxygenated Derivatives In Contaminated Soils, Marc Elie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contamination of soils, with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), remains a widespread environmental concern. In the past two decades, many physical, chemical and biological methods have been developed and evaluated for the degradation of PAHs. However, due to their low aqueous solubility, high sorption affinity, hydrophobicity and recalcitrance, the environmental remediation of PAHs in soil continues to be economically challenging. In addition to PAH contamination, the presence of oxygenated derivatives of PAHs (OPAHs), in soils, has increasingly become a concern due to their greater toxic properties compared to parent PAH compounds. To date, no investigations on OPAH-remediation methods have been …

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt Jan 2012

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My primary aim for this study is to illuminate the Ransom trilogy's inherent psychological and spiritual themes, as well as demonstrate how these themes clarify Lewis's philosophical and political goals for the text. Specifically, by investigating Lewis's mythic imagery and suffering motifs in light of psychoanalytic and theological literary criticisms, I elucidate the reasoning behind Lewis's unique—and at times, horrific—portrayal of fear, violence, and death. I also investigate how Lewis integrates his theology with the horrors of personal and intrapersonal suffering, as well as how he utilizes imagination and myth to explicate the practical (or political) implications of his theodicy. …

The Relationship Between Caregiver Intimate Partner Violence, Posttraumatic Stress, Child Cognitive Self-Development, And Treatment Attrition Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims., Leigh De Delorenzi Jan 2012

The Relationship Between Caregiver Intimate Partner Violence, Posttraumatic Stress, Child Cognitive Self-Development, And Treatment Attrition Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims., Leigh De Delorenzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide problem, with two-thirds of all cases going unreported. A wealth of research over the last 30 years demonstrates the negative emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, academic, and social effects of CSA. As a result, researchers and mental health professionals frequently attempt to measure the efficacy of treatment modalities in order to assess which treatments lead to better outcomes. However, in order to effectively study treatment outcomes, researchers must be able to track the status of child functioning and symptomology before, during, and after treatment. Because high levels of treatment attrition exist among CSA victims, …

Electrochemical Polymerization Of Ppy-Mwcnt Composite As A Counter Electrode For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, S. Abdulalmohsin, S. M. Al-Mutoki, Z. Li Jan 2012

Electrochemical Polymerization Of Ppy-Mwcnt Composite As A Counter Electrode For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, S. Abdulalmohsin, S. M. Al-Mutoki, Z. Li

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Polypyrrole (PPy) - multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were synthesized by using in situ electrochemical polymerization with different COOH-functionalized MWCNTs. The PPY-MWCNT composites were used as counter electrode in the fabrication of dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Compared to the DSC device with PPy counter electrode, the devices with PPY/MWCNT composite electrode offer much higher total photovoltaic conversion efficiency due to the reduced series resistance. These PPY/MWCNT nanocomposite materials proved to be a good alternate to the expensive Pt as counter electrode in DSC.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) assessments indicate alterations in physical and/or chemical factors making them valuable tools when attempting to assess agricultural best management practices (BMPs). The purpose of this study was to obtain pre-BMP land cover and macroinvertebrate community data in order to characterize temporal and spatial variation in three catchments: Little Strawberry (LS), Greasy Creek (GC), and Sandy Creek (SC) of the Strawberry River Watershed, located in north central Arkansas, in order to establish baseline conditions. BMIs were collected for the three subwatersheds in 1995, 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2009. Taxa richness, Hilsenhoff Biotic Index (HBI) and Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and …

Theoretical Justification For Bond Valence -- Bond Length Empirical Correlations, F. D. Hardcastle, S. Laffoon Jan 2012

Theoretical Justification For Bond Valence -- Bond Length Empirical Correlations, F. D. Hardcastle, S. Laffoon

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Bond valence – bond length empirical correlations are of great interest in chemistry, biology, geology and materials science because they offer a quick and convenient way of checking and evaluating molecular structures. Linus Pauling’s relationship is the most commonly used, but is a two-parameter fit where R0 and b must be optimized. In this study, a simplified quantum-mechanical approach was used to derive Pauling’s empirical bond valence – bond length relationship. A covalency factor was also introduced to account for the difference in “softness” between cation and anion (resulting in increased orbital overlap). An expression for the b parameter was …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In our investigation of breakdown waves, we use a one-dimensional, steady-state, constant velocity fluid model. This investigation involves breakdown waves for which the electric field force on electrons is in the opposite direction of wave propagation. The waves are considered to be shock fronted and the electron gas partial pressure is large enough to sustain the wave propagation. Our basic set of electron fluid-dynamical equations is composed of the equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy, coupled with Poisson’s equation. This investigation involves breakdown waves for which a large current exists behind the shock front. The current behind the …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi is a symbiotic mite associated with the Madagascar hissing cockroach Gromphdorhina portentosa. The population structuring of G. schaeferi is described based on examination of 19,421 mites collected from 1,915 individuals of G. portentosa taken from a large laboratory colony. The mites exhibited an overall prevalence of 50.7% and mean intensity (+SE) of 20.0 (+0.6) with an infestation intensity range of 1-116, and relative abundance (+SE) of 10.1 (+0.4). Both prevalence and mean intensity of infestation exhibited a dramatic increase with increasing cockroach size/age. By the time cockroaches reach 40 mm the prevalence is nearly 100%. Mean intensity increases …

Morphology Of Rathke's Glands In The Snapping Turtle, Chelydra Serpentina, With Comments On The Presence Of Multilaminar Lamellar Bodies In Turtles, S. E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

I examined the histology and ultrastructure of Rathke’s glands in hatchling, juvenile, and adult snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina). This species possesses four pairs of Rathke’s glands (i.e., one axillary and three inframarginals) that are embedded beneath marginal bones and are named primarily according to the anatomical location of their orifices. These integumentary glands are similar anatomically and ultrastructurally to one another. Each gland is comprised of a single, highly vascularized, secretory lobule, which is surrounded by a thick tunic of asymmetrically arranged, striated muscle. Two types of large secretory vacuoles characterize most of the holocrine cells produced by a relatively …

Self-Assmbled Lithography-Free Fabrication Of Microchannels And Microfluidics In Polymers, Wintana Tadesse Kahsai

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Rapid, reliable and easy to implement approaches are needed for fabrication of circular microchannels in polymeric microfluidics. PDMS has been a choice of material in microfluidics and it is being used as prototype due to its unique property such as flexibility and transparency. Traditional method of fabrication such as photolithography and soft lithography are complicated and time consuming. In this thesis, a non-lithography and bottom-up self-assembled approach is shown. The resulting devices can have uses in many applications such as assays, biosensing, separation of mixtures, micro-mixing and bioreactors. This thesis presents novel approaches of manufacturing self-assembled microchannels in polydimethyleneoxide (PDMS) …
