Effects Of Betel Nut On Cardiovascular Risk Factors In A Rat Model, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal, Naseema Mehboobali, Ghulam Haider, Shahid Pervez, Iqbal Azam
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background: Areca nut (commonly known as betel nut) chewing has been shown to be associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanism by which betel nut ingestion could lead to development of CVD is not precisely known; however, dyslipidemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and inflammation could be some of the potential risk factors. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of two dosages of betel nut on homocysteinemia, inflammation and some of the components of metabolic syndrome, such as hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-cholesterol, obesity and fasting hyperglycemia in a rat model.
Methods: Thirty-six adult female Sprague Dawley rats, aged 10–12 …

This study was undertaken to validate the medicinal use of Chrozophora prostrata in constipation. The crude extract of C prostrata produced laxative effect in mice at 100 and 300 mg/kg, similar to carbachol and castor oil. In spontaneously contracting rabbit jejunum tissues, C. prostrata (0.01-3 mg/mL) exhibited atropine-sensitive spasmogenic effect, which was reproducible in guinea-pig ileum. Interestingly, at high concentrations, C. prostrata showed concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on rabbit jejunum, suggesting the presence of accompanied spasmolytic activity. When tested on induced contractions, C. prostrata completely relaxed low K+-induced contraction, while partially inhibited high K+, similar to cromakalim. Tetraethylammonium pretreatment abolished the …

The Role Of Src Kinase In The Biology And Pathogenesis Of Acanthamoeba Castellanii, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Junaid Iqbal, Marie-Josee Maugueret, Naveed Ahmed Khan
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background: Acanthamoeba species are the causative agents of fatal granulomatous encephalitis in humans. Haematogenous spread is thought to be a primary step, followed by blood-brain barrier penetration, in the transmission of Acanthmaoeba into the central nervous system, but the associated molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we evaluated the role of Src, a non-receptor protein tyrosine kinase in the biology and pathogenesis of Acanthamoeba.
Methods: Amoebistatic and amoebicidal assays were performed by incubating amoeba in the presence of Src kinase-selective inhibitor, PP2 (4-amino-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-7-(t-butyl)pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine) and its inactive analog, PP3 (4-amino-7-phenylpyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine). Using this inhibitor, the role of Src kinase in A. castellanii interactions …

Life Span Development: Childhood, Adolescence, And Adulthood, Cindy L. Juntunen, Stephanie San Miguel Bauman
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
This chapter examines human development in the context of multiple identities. It begins with an exploration of the complexity of human development through the lens of ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1977; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006), as augmented by multicultural and feminist psychology (Gilligan, 1982, 1996; Hurtado, 2010; Neville & Mobley, 2001; Yakushko, Davidson, & Williams, 2009). The roles of resilience and empowerment in development are then presented in the context of social identities. The remainder of the chapter explores important developmental concerns across the life span, including physical, emotional, social, and cognitive and academic/vocational development. Across each of these life …

Diverse Sample Analysis And Sample Preparation Studies Utalizing Ap - Maldi-Tof-Ms, Sara May Kallop
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sample preparation and analysis for atmospheric pressure matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (AP- MALDI-TOF-MS) was investigated. By investigating the effects that sample preparation has upon MALDI signal, better analysis can be carried out. The influence of sample deposition was studied by not only observing the signal intensity produced but also by quantitation. Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) was used for the quantitation of three different analytes. The results indicated that not only was signal greatly affected by sample deposition but the effect on quantitation error was also statistically significant among the three different sample deposition …

A Laser Radar Employing Linearly Chirped Pulses From A Mode-Locked Laser For Long Range, Unambiguous, Sub-Millimeter Resolution Ranging And Velocimetry, Mohammad Umar Piracha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Light detection and ranging (lidar) is used for various applications such as remote sensing, altimetry and imaging. In this talk, a linearly chirped pulse source is introduced that generates wavelength-swept pulses exhibiting ~6 nm optical bandwidth with > 20 km coherence length. The chirped pulses are used in an interferometric lidar setup to perform distance measurements with sub-millimeter resolution (using pulses that are a few meters long), at target distances > 10 km, with at least 25 dB signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver. A pulse repetition rate of 20 MHz provides fast update rates, while chirped pulse amplification allows easy amplification of …
Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman
Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I present a new approach to evolutionary search called novelty search, wherein only behavioral novelty is rewarded, thereby abstracting evolution as a search for novel forms. This new approach contrasts with the traditional approach of rewarding progress towards the objective through an objective function. Although they are designed to light a path to the objective, objective functions can instead deceive search into converging to dead ends called local optima. As a significant problem in evolutionary computation, deception has inspired many techniques designed to mitigate it. However, nearly all such methods are still ultimately susceptible to deceptive local optima because they …
Bst-Inspired Smart Flexible Electronics, Ya Shen
Bst-Inspired Smart Flexible Electronics, Ya Shen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advances in modern communication systems have brought about devices with more functionality, better performance, smaller size, lighter weight and lower cost. Meanwhile, the requirement for newer devices has become more demanding than ever. Tunability and flexibility are both long-desired features. Tunable devices are ‘smart’ in the sense that they can adapt to the dynamic environment or varying user demand as well as correct the minor deviations due to manufacturing fluctuations, therefore making it possible to reduce system complexity and overall cost. It is also desired that electronics be flexible to provide conformability and portability. Previously, tunable devices on flexible …
4d-Ct Lung Registration And Its Application For Lung Radiation Therapy, Yugang Min
4d-Ct Lung Registration And Its Application For Lung Radiation Therapy, Yugang Min
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Radiation therapy has been successful in treating lung cancer patients, but its efficacy is limited by the inability to account for the respiratory motion during treatment planning and radiation dose delivery. Physics-based lung deformation models facilitate the motion computation of both tumor and local lung tissue during radiation therapy. In this dissertation, a novel method is discussed to accurately register 3D lungs across the respiratory phases from 4D-CT datasets, which facilitates the estimation of the volumetric lung deformation models. This method uses multi-level and multi-resolution optical flow registration coupled with thin plate splines (TPS), to address registration issue of inconsistent …
