Perceiving And Reporting Domestic Violence Incidents In Unconventional Settings: A Vignette Survey Study, Hadar Aviram, Annick Persinger Jan 2012

Perceiving And Reporting Domestic Violence Incidents In Unconventional Settings: A Vignette Survey Study, Hadar Aviram, Annick Persinger

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Domestic violence abuse is under-reported to police, but has long been viewed only through a lens of female oppression. Some literature suggests that in unconventional abusive relationships, such as in same-sex relationships or in relationships with a female batterer and male victim, the problem of under-reporting is more severe. This Article uses a vignette survey design to examine the tendencies to report such incidents to the police, by controlling for the type of relationship, the existence of outing threats, and the presence of mutual violence. Compared to the typical scenario involving a male batterer and female victim, we find significantly …

Crime Emergence And Simulation Modeling: Modeling Crime Space, Patricia Brantingham, Kathryn Wuschke, Richard Frank, Paul J. Brantingham

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter explores several new modeling approaches and research findings, showing how they may be used to explore and enhance theory. There is a special emphasis on Target Choice Selection, focusing on Crime Pattern Theory and the Geometry of Crime (Brantingham and Brantingham, 1978a, 1984, 1991; Brantingham and Brantingham, 1981, 1993a, 2008). This exploration is described through a series of research examples and a case study of the target choice behavior of high repeat offenders. The goal is to explore the emergence of patterns better understood against the urban backcloths for high repeat offenders. Emphasis is in this case study …

The highly visible coastal phenomenon of wetland loss in coastal Louisiana (LA) was examined through the prism of carbon accumulation and loss. Carbon storage or sequestration in rapidly subsiding LA coastal marsh soils was based on vertical marsh accretion and aerial change data. Marshes sequester significant amount of carbon through vertical accretion however, large amounts of carbon previously sequestration in the soil profile is lost through annual deterioration of these coastal marshes. Hurricanes, such as Katrina and Rita, have triggered instantaneous large carbon losses of sequestered soil carbon through the destruction of large areas of marsh. This analysis shows proposed …

Landscape-Scale Analysis Of Wetland Sediment Deposition From Four Tropical Cyclone Events, A W. Tweel, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, and Ike deposited large quantities of sediment on coastal wetlands after making landfall in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We sampled sediments deposited on the wetland surface throughout the entire Louisiana and Texas depositional surfaces of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, and the Louisiana portion of Hurricane Ike. We used spatial interpolation to model the total amount and spatial distribution of inorganic sediment deposition from each storm. The sediment deposition on coastal wetlands was an estimated 68, 48, and 21 million metric tons from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav, respectively. The spatial distribution decreased in a similar …

Infant And Juvenile Play Patterns In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Courtney Batts Jan 2012

Infant And Juvenile Play Patterns In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Courtney Batts

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Primate play is an important feature of physical and cognitive development. Previous research suggests differences among age and sex classes for type and amount of play, and that play partner preference is for individuals of the same age and sex class. We investigated play among Tibetan macaque (Macaca thibetana) infants and juveniles. Infants played more often and engaged in more solitary play behaviors, juvenile females played the least and engaged in more object play, and juvenile males engaged in the most social play. Total play time differed significantly among infants, juvenile males, and juvenile females. Cluster analysis showed that overall …

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Clavatadine A, Stephanie Conn Jan 2012

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Clavatadine A, Stephanie Conn

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in humans. one cause of cardiovascular disease is excessive clot formation, or thrombosis. Although it can be fatal, thrombosis can be prevented or treated using inhibitors that target specific proteins in the blood coagulation pathway. Nevertheless, few targeted inhibitors of thrombosis have been reported. Clavatadine A is a specific and potent Factor XIa inhibitor (IC501.3uM) that was recently isolated from the Australian marine sponge Suberea clavata. Here, we report the completion of the synthesis for the synthetic stating materials, a dibrominated derivative of homogentisic acid lactone and an azidoiscyanate. We …

Functional Neurosurgery. The Modulation Of Neural And Mind Circuits, Faisal Al-Otaibi, Thamer Al-Khairallah

Neurosciences

Different complex neuroanatomical and neurochemical circuits regulate a variety of neuronal behaviors and brain functions. Any disturbance in these circuits can generate functional disorders such as movement disorders, epilepsy, pain, memory disorders, and psychiatric disorders. Functional neurosurgery aims to restore these functions, either by removing or isolating the abnormally behaving neurons or by modulating the disturbed circuits. Neuromodulation is a fast-growing field, powered by the recent advances in neuroimaging and technology. Here, we discuss recent advances and new horizons in functional neurosurgery.

Good Men Grow Corn: Embodied Ecological Heritage In A Belizean Mopan Community, Kristina Baines

Publications and Research

Recent developments in land rights and land use in the Toledo district, Belize has generated anthropological and activist interest surrounding traditional ecological knowledge and practice, and the role of heritage in communities. This study explores the connection between ecological knowledge and practices, and the concurrent construction of heritage, and community health and wellness, broadly defined. Developing and using the concept of “embodied ecological heritage,” this dissertation takes a phenomenological approach to understanding the convergence of ecological heritage and health in multiple realms of everyday life, arguing that lived experience of participating in “traditional”practices is fundamentally connected to wellness in the …

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study is an historical dissertation on the topic of education reform in the East African nation of Rwanda. Determining the impact of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 on three reform initiatives that followed is the central aim of the study. The framework of the study is assembled as a three-‐part timeline upon which three initiatives of education reform are overlaid for analysis, 1) student-‐centered instruction, 2) language and 3) enrollment developments. Focusing on those three initiatives in the context of a timeline that details each in the decades prior to the genocide, and in the years that followed it, …

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the design and implementation of a low power embedded system using mobile processor technology (Intel Atom™ Z530 Processor) specifically tailored for a neural-machine interface (NMI) for artificial limbs. This embedded system effectively performs our previously developed NMI algorithm based on neuromuscular-mechanical fusion and phase-dependent pattern classification. The analysis shows that NMI embedded system can meet real-time constraints with high accuracies for recognizing the user's locomotion mode. Our implementation utilizes the mobile processor efficiently to allow a power consumption of 2.2 watts and low CPU utilization (less than 4.3%) while executing the complex NMI algorithm. Our experiments have …

An Un-Conventional Approach: Ecuador’S Yasuní-Itt Initiative Is In Discord With The Unfccc, Ryan Haddad Jan 2012

An Un-Conventional Approach: Ecuador’S Yasuní-Itt Initiative Is In Discord With The Unfccc, Ryan Haddad

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Dubbed the “cradle of the Amazon,” and covering more than 2.4 million acres in the Amazon River Basin, Ecuador’s Yasuní National Forest is perhaps the most biodiverse place on Earth. Almost 200 species of mammal, 560 fish species, 300 reptile and amphibian species and close to 600 different types of birds can be found within the parks parameters. In just 2.5 acres of the park can be found as many tree species as in the U.S. and Canada combined. In addition to its ecological diversity, Yasuní supports several tribes of indigenous people, which remain voluntarily isolated in the forest. In …

Genesis In Hyperreality: Legitimizing Disingenuous Controversy At The Creation Museum, Casey R. Kelly, Kristen Hoerl Jan 2012

Genesis In Hyperreality: Legitimizing Disingenuous Controversy At The Creation Museum, Casey R. Kelly, Kristen Hoerl

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

This essay analyzes the argumentative structure of the "Answers in Genesis" ministry's Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. Founded by a $27 million grant, the 70,000 square-foot museum appropriates the stylistic and authoritative signifiers of natural history museums, complete with technically proficient hyperreal displays and modern curatorial techniques. In this essay, we argue that the museum provides a culturally authoritative space in which Young Earth Creationists can visually craft the appearance that there is an ongoing scientific controversy over matters long settled in the scientific community (evolution), or what scholars call a disingenuous or manufactured controversy. We analyze the displays and …

Free Your Mind: Contemporary Racial Attitudes And Post Racial Theory, Lakeyta M. Bonnette, Sarah M. Gershon, Precious D. Hall

Ethnic Studies Review

The inauguration of the United States first Black President has prompted mass discussions of race relations in America. It is often articulated that America is now in a post-racial society. However, the question still remains: does the election of a Black president demonstrate that America is now a "color-blind" society? To answer this question, we rely on data collected by PEW (2007). Our results suggest that white and African Americans differ significantly in the extent to which they express post-racial attitudes. Specifically, we find that whites more commonly express post-racial attitudes, claiming that racism and discrimination are rare, in opposition …

The Impact Of A Video Game Intervention On The Cognitive Functioning, Self-Efficacy, Self-Esteem, And Video Game Attitudes Of Older Adults, Giovanni W. Sosa Jan 2012

The Impact Of A Video Game Intervention On The Cognitive Functioning, Self-Efficacy, Self-Esteem, And Video Game Attitudes Of Older Adults, Giovanni W. Sosa

CGU Theses & Dissertations

While a well-established body of empirical work indicates that engaging in mentally stimulating activities is linked to positive physical and mental health outcomes, relatively few studies have specifically examined the impact that video game training can have on cognitive functioning and well-being. Given the substantial implications that such work has for an ever-growing older adult population, this area of research has begun to pique the interest of researchers world-wide. The present study employed an experimental paradigm to explore the impact of a Nintendo DS video game, Brain Age, on the cognitive functioning, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and video game attitudes of …

Systematics, Biogeography And Leaf Anatomy And Architecture Of Bursera Subgen. Bursera (Burseraceae) In The Greater Antilles And The Bahamas, María Cristina Martínez-Habibe

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents a comprehensive study on the origin and evolutionary relationships of the species of Bursera in Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and the Bahamas. The goals of the first chapter were to test monophyly of the group, revisit a recent transfer of two species of Bursera to Commiphora, and place recently discovered mainland species using the reconstructed phylogenies. Additionally, divergence estimations using fossils were used as independent tests of several hypotheses regarding the arrival of the modern biota to the Greater Antilles and Bahamas (GAB). I conclude that all endemic taxonomic entities of the genus in this region belong …

Simulated Associating Polymer Networks, Joris Billen Jan 2012

Simulated Associating Polymer Networks, Joris Billen

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Telechelic associating polymer networks consist of polymer chains terminated by endgroups that have a different chemical composition than the polymer backbone. When dissolved in a solution, the endgroups cluster together to form aggregates. At low temperature, a strongly connected reversible network is formed and the system behaves like a gel. Telechelic networks are of interest since they are representative for biopolymer networks (e.g. F-actin) and are widely used in medical applications (e.g. hydrogels for tissue engineering, wound dressings) and consumer products (e.g. contact lenses, paint thickeners).

In this thesis such systems are studied by means of a molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo …

Evaluating Sixth Graders' Self-Efficacy In Response To The Use Of Educational Technology, Anne V. Castagnaro Jan 2012

Evaluating Sixth Graders' Self-Efficacy In Response To The Use Of Educational Technology, Anne V. Castagnaro

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Sixth grade is a pivotal time in school, as students culminate their elementary school years and anticipate junior high school. At this age, students become more involved in trends, especially technological trends. When students can utilize the same type of technology inside and outside of school, their self-efficacy may increase. Hypothetically, even within an academic setting, a sixth grader's self-efficacy will subconsciously elevate with these familiar tools. This mixed methods study evaluated the link between the use of educational technology in the sixth grade classroom and students' self-efficacy.

To facilitate data collection for this study, after parental consent was obtained, …
