Developing A Nursing Based Support Group For Incarcerated Women Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Assault: Pathways For Healing, Paula Johns Jan 2012

Developing A Nursing Based Support Group For Incarcerated Women Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Assault: Pathways For Healing, Paula Johns

Theses and Graduate Projects

Every year large numbers of women are incarcerated in jail, prisons or other correctional jurisdictions in America. Research has shown that more than half of these women report a history of sexual abuse as a child, many who have rarely told their story. Typical coping mechanisms for those who have been traumatized sexually are attempts to commit suicide, the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, running away, disassociation, becoming promiscuous, or eating disorders, etc. These early adaptations at a young age can influence nearly every parameter of their lives, contributing to numerous other negative consequences, such as increased physical …

Questioning Appropriation: Agency And Complicity In A Transnational Feminist Location Politics, Joe Parker Jan 2012

Questioning Appropriation: Agency And Complicity In A Transnational Feminist Location Politics, Joe Parker

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In feminist circles agency is often opposed to complicity and associated with resistance to sexism and patriarchy, yet such binary oppositions make the political stakes of their presumed boundaries difficult to interrogate. By bringing location politics into dialogue with agency theory, boundaries of same/Other and location categories may move from a naturalized ground for political work to the contested center of a politics of resistance. I follow a Foucauldian interpretation of agency to reconsider the ethico-politics of established divisions of self and Other both individually and in terms of social movements. By following Gayatri Spivak, Meyda Yeğenoğlu, and Chandra Mohanty's …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Group 5 Metal Complexes Containing Pyrazolate, Amidate, And Related Ligands As Potential Precursors For Thin Film Growth By Atomic Layer Deposition, Thuduwage Hiran Perera Jan 2012

Synthesis And Characterization Of Group 5 Metal Complexes Containing Pyrazolate, Amidate, And Related Ligands As Potential Precursors For Thin Film Growth By Atomic Layer Deposition, Thuduwage Hiran Perera

Wayne State University Dissertations

Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is an advanced variant of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and is used to deposit smooth and conformal thin films for applications in the microelectronics industry. ALD requires metal precursors that are sufficiently volatile and thermally stable at elevated temperatures. Several group 5 ALD and CVD precursors were reported in the literature, which have been used to deposit TaN, NbN, Nb2O5, and Ta2O5 thin films. Synthesis of low and mid valent group 5 metal ALD precursors might give us access to deposit NbO2, Nb2O3, Ta2O3, and TaO2 thin films by low temperature ALD pathways upon applying mild …

Taxonomic Status And Relationships Of Sorex Obscurus Parvidens Jackson, 1921, From California, Neal Woodman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The San Bernardino shrew, Sorex obscurus parvidens Jackson, 1921, is a population inhabiting the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains of southern California. For the past 9 decades, this population has been considered either a subspecies of S. obscurus Merriam, 1895, S. vagrans Baird, 1857, or S. monticola Merriam, 1890; or an undifferentiated population of S. ornatus Merriam, 1895. Aside from the changing taxonomic landscape that contextualizes the genus Sorex, previous study of S. obscurus parvidens has been retarded by the perception of limited available samples (typically, fewer than 8 specimens); misinterpretation of the provenance of specimens identified …

An equine SNP genotyping array was developed and evaluated on a panel of samples representing 14 domestic horse breeds and 18 evolutionarily related species. More than 54,000 polymorphic SNPs provided an average inter-SNP spacing of ~43 kb. The mean minor allele frequency across domestic horse breeds was 0.23, and the number of polymorphic SNPs within breeds ranged from 43,287 to 52,085. Genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) in most breeds declined rapidly over the first 50–100 kb and reached background levels within 1–2 Mb. The extent of LD and the level of inbreeding were highest in the Thoroughbred and lowest in the …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The use of terminal sires (TS) for crossbreeding is integral to the UK sheep industry where approximately 71% of market lambs are sired by TS rams. Early growth of these crossbred lambs affects profitability. The objectives of this study were i) to evaluate the effectiveness of index selection among TS on BW and ADG of their crossbred offspring; and ii) to compare the efficacy of that selection within TS breeds. The most widely used TS breeds in the United Kingdom are Charollais, Suffolk, and Texel. These participated in sire referencing schemes in which they were evaluated on a lean growth …

The gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex and diverse microbiota that has an important role in host metabolism. Microbial diversity is influenced by a combination of environmental and host genetic factors and is associated with several polygenic diseases. In this study we combined next-generation sequencing, genetic mapping, and a set of physiological traits of the BXD mouse population to explore genetic factors that explain differences in gut microbiota and its impact on metabolic traits. Molecular profiling of the gut microbiota revealed important quantitative differences in microbial composition among BXD strains. These differences in gut microbial composition are influenced by host-genetics, which …

Aggregation And Law, Ariel Porat, Eric A. Posner Jan 2012

Aggregation And Law, Ariel Porat, Eric A. Posner

If a plaintiff brings two claims, each with a 0.4 probability of being valid, the plaintiff will usually lose, even if the claims are based on independent events, and thus the probability of at least one of the claims being valid is 0.64. If a plaintiff brings two independent claims, and neither of them alleges misconduct sufficient to justify a remedy, the plaintiff will usually lose, even if the claims jointly allege sufficient wrongdoing to justify a remedy. Thus, as a general rule, courts refuse to engage in what we call factual aggregation (the first case) and normative aggregation (the …

Reflecting Culture: Polygamy And The Charter, Carissima Mathen Jan 2012

Reflecting Culture: Polygamy And The Charter, Carissima Mathen

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states as a general interpretative principle that its rights and freedoms must be applied so as to preserve and maintain the multicultural heritage of Canadians. This principle stands with other broad ideals of our political community — such as pluralism, mutual respect and human dignity — which constitute important aspects of our legal culture. Any society that seeks to be diverse yet bound by common values will face deep challenges, as conflicts emerge over the meaning of “a good life”. at times, such controversies can appear to raise existential issues for the society …

Sustainability In The Private And Public Sectors: A Comparison Of Motivators, Actions, Barriers And Reporting Of Results, Lisa London Jan 2012

Sustainability In The Private And Public Sectors: A Comparison Of Motivators, Actions, Barriers And Reporting Of Results, Lisa London

Planning Dissertations - Archive

The concept of sustainability has developed over the past 40 years and continues to advance as organizations implement sustainable practices, quantify sustainability results, and communicate their accomplishments to key stakeholders. Despite these advances, sustainability remains an emerging field in need of clear definitions and goals; development of best practices; and effective tools for measuring, reporting, and benchmarking results. The literature suggests that the private sector is more advanced than the public sector in addressing these challenges. The purpose of this study was to discover if the public sector lags in pursuing sustainability, and if so, to identify some of the …

Investigations Into Causes Of Failure Of Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces, R. Collins Watson Jan 2012

Investigations Into Causes Of Failure Of Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces, R. Collins Watson

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

All highly selective methods of neural interfacing for mental control of a robotic prosthesis tested to date have exhibited high rates of failure over time. Regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNIs) may offer the greatest potential among the proposed technologies for providing the number of degrees of freedom necessary to control a robotic limb, but are unacceptable for clinical use due to several shortcomings of current technology: (1) all RPNIs tested to date have exhibited signal loss over time due to biological mechanisms of rejection of implanted electrodes; (2) all chronically tested interfaces have suffered from high rates of device failure …

Magnetic-Based Theranostic Nanoparticles For Prostate Cancer Management, Aniket Sharadrao Wadajkar Jan 2012

Magnetic-Based Theranostic Nanoparticles For Prostate Cancer Management, Aniket Sharadrao Wadajkar

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

With an increasing rate of cancers, the need for effective cancer management has led to the development of theranostic systems for diagnosis and therapy. Conventional techniques for cancer management have limited success due to inaccurate diagnosis and treatment side effects. Development of magnetic-based theranostic nanoparticles (MBTN) may overcome these limitations with the advantages of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) such as magnetic targeting, hyperthermia, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents; and advantages of polymer coatings for carrying payloads and allowing bioconjugation for active targeting applications. Aim of this research was to develop multifunctional MBTNs for prostate cancer management. First, biodegradable photoluminescent …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Based on measurements from the WOCE/JGOFS global CO2 survey, the CLIVAR/CO2 Repeat Hydrography Program and the Canadian Line P survey, we have observed an average decrease of 0.34% yr−1 in the saturation state of surface seawater in the Pacific Ocean with respect to aragonite and calcite. The upward migrations of the aragonite and calcite saturation horizons, averaging about 1 to 2 m yr−1, are the direct result of the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans and regional changes in circulation and biogeochemical processes. The shoaling of the saturation horizon is regionally variable, with …

Exploring Trade-Offs Between Fisheries And Conservation Of The Vaquita Porpoise (Phocoena Sinus) Using An Atlantis Ecosystem Model, Hem Nalini Morzaria-Luna, Cameron H. Ainsworth, Isaac C. Kaplan, Phillip S. Levin, Elizabeth A. Fulton Jan 2012

Exploring Trade-Offs Between Fisheries And Conservation Of The Vaquita Porpoise (Phocoena Sinus) Using An Atlantis Ecosystem Model, Hem Nalini Morzaria-Luna, Cameron H. Ainsworth, Isaac C. Kaplan, Phillip S. Levin, Elizabeth A. Fulton

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Background: Minimizing fishery bycatch threats might involve trade-offs between maintaining viable populations and economic benefits. Understanding these trade-offs can help managers reconcile conflicting goals. An example is a set of bycatch reduction measures for the Critically Endangered vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus), in the Northern Gulf of California, Mexico. The vaquita is an endemic species threatened with extinction by artisanal net bycatch within its limited range; in this area fisheries are the chief source of economic productivity.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We analyze trade-offs between conservation of the vaquita and fisheries, using an end-to-end Atlantis ecosystem model for the Northern Gulf of California. …

Modelling Reef Fish Population Responses To Fisheries Restrictionsin Marine Protected Areas In The Coral Triangle, Divya Varkey, Cameron H. Ainsworth, Tony J. Pitcher

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Marine ecosystem models are used to investigate marine protected area (MPA) benefits for coral reef ecosystems located in Raja Ampat, in the heart of the Coral Triangle. Field data from an integrated and diverse research project is used to develop a spatial ecosystem model using Ecopath, Ecosim, and Ecospace modelling software. The ecological and fisheries responses of a reef ecosystem to different levels of fishing effort restrictions inside MPAs are explored. The trade-offs of allowing some fisheries to operate inside the MPAs versus designating the MPAs as no-take zones are highlighted. The results show that rapid rebuilding of reef fish …

The Neurophysiology Of Adr And Process Design: A New Approach To Conflict Prevention And Resolution?, Jeremy Lack, François Bogacz

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Neurobiology seems to be popping up everywhere. It is being taught in leadership conferences, sales and marketing seminars, management meetings, business schools, and increasingly in law schools and bar associations. The cover of the American Bar Association's Summer 2011 Dispute Resolution Magazine was dedicated to the topic of "Neuroscience and Negotiation." In it, Professor Richard Birke observes that "Neuroscience is everywhere." Is it a new fad or a fundamental awakening, providing new insights for the legal profession?
