Fuel Conditions Associated With Native And Exotic Grasses In A Subtropical Dry Forest In Puerto Rico, Jarrod M. Thaxton, Skip J. Van Bloem, Stefanie Whitmire

Publications

Exotic grasses capable of increasing frequency and intensity of anthropogenic fire have invaded subtropical and tropical dry forests worldwide. Since many dry forest trees are susceptible to fire, this can result in decline of native species and loss of forest cover. While the contribution of exotic grasses to altered fire regimes has been well documented, the role of native grasses in contributing to fuel loads in dry forest has received little attention. We assessed differences in fuel conditions among native and exotic grasses within a subtropical dry forest preserve in Puerto Rico. We quantified fine fuel loads, fuel continuity, and …

What's In A Name? The Matrix As An Introduction To Mathematics, Kris H. Green Jan 2012

What's In A Name? The Matrix As An Introduction To Mathematics, Kris H. Green

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix (1999) to illustrate how evidence shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician and self-confessed science fiction fan, I usually field questions related to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object?

Of course, there are many possible explanations for this, each of which probably contributed a little to the naming decision. …

Cultural ecosystem services (ES) are consistently recognized but not yet adequately defined or integrated within the ES framework. A substantial body of models, methods, and data relevant to cultural services has been developed within the social and behavioral sciences before and outside of the ES approach. A selective review of work in landscape aesthetics, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and spiritual significance demonstrates opportunities for operationally defining cultural services in terms of socioecological models, consistent with the larger set of ES. Such models explicitly link ecological structures and functions with cultural values and benefits, facilitating communication between scientists and stakeholders and …

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema Jan 2012

“I Just Wikipedia It”: Information Behavior Of First-Year Writing Students, Megan Whitney Olsen, A. R. Diekema

English Faculty Publications

First-year writing students are a very large, diverse, and ubiquitous information user group, as writing courses are typically required of all undergraduate students, regardless of major. While in their institution's writing program, students frequently must utilize research (information) in their writing assignments. While this formal, task-related information behavior is important for stakeholders in the fields of information science and the humanities to understand, little research has been done on this significant group of students. This study arrived at key exploratory findings by collecting data and context from first-year writing students through semi-structured interviews. The researchers found that students continue to …

A Novel Link Between Akt1 And Twist1 In Ovarian Tumor Cell Motility And Invasiveness, Nirav Shah Jan 2012

A Novel Link Between Akt1 And Twist1 In Ovarian Tumor Cell Motility And Invasiveness, Nirav Shah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ovarian cancer results in more deaths per year than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. The low survival rate is partly due to the lack of early detection and the susceptibility to relapse. The AKT serine threonine kinase plays a pivotal role in hallmark cellular processes for the progression of ovarian cancer, including tumor cell growth and migration. Therapeutic targeting of pan-AKT has been problematic, in part due to feedback mechanisms and crosstalk with other pathways. The hypothesis for this study is that AKT 1, -2 and -3 isoforms may have different roles and regulate cell processes in …

Species And Habitat Interactions Of The Gopher Tortoise: A Keystone Species?, Christopher Catano Jan 2012

Species And Habitat Interactions Of The Gopher Tortoise: A Keystone Species?, Christopher Catano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Species-species and species-habitat interactions have been demonstrated to be important in influencing diversity across a variety of ecosystems. Despite generalities in the importance of these interactions, appropriate mechanisms to explain them are absent in many systems. In sandhill systems of the southeast U.S., gopher tortoises have been hypothesized to be a crucial species in the maintenance of diversity and function. However, the mechanisms and magnitude in which they influence their communities and habitats have rarely been empirically quantified. I examined how habitat structure influences tortoise abandonment of burrows and how tortoise densities influence nonvolant vertebrate community diversity. Tortoise burrow abandonment …

Determining The Impacts Of Beach Restoration On Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) And Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Nesting Patterns And Reproductive Success Along Florida's Atlantic Coast, Allison Whitney Hays Jan 2012

Determining The Impacts Of Beach Restoration On Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) And Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Nesting Patterns And Reproductive Success Along Florida's Atlantic Coast, Allison Whitney Hays

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Artificial beach nourishment, the most common method to mitigate coastal erosion in the United States, is also considered the most ecologically friendly alternative for shoreline stabilization. However, this habitat alteration has the potential to impact nesting marine turtles and developing hatchlings. The first objective of this study was to determine how nourishing beaches with two different design templates affects loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting success, the ratio of nests to the total number of nests and non-nesting emergences, and reproductive success, the ratio of hatched and emerged hatchlings to the total number of eggs deposited. Two …

Toxic Effects Of Copper, Cadmium, And Methoxychlor Shown By Neutral Red Retention Assay In Two Species Of Freshwater Molluscs, Nikolett Molnar, Peter Fong

Biology Faculty Publications

We used neutral red retention assay in lysosomes of digestive gland cells as an indicator for stress effects by the environmental contaminants Cu, Cd, and the pesticide methoxychlor in two freshwater molluscs, the unionid mussel, Elliptio complanata (Lightfoot) and the ramshorn snail Helisoma trivolvis (Say). Mussels and snails were exposed for 7 and 14 days to Cu and Cd each at nominal concentrations of 2.5 μg/L, 5.0 μg/L, and 10.0 μg/L, and to methoxychlor concentrations of 1.0 μg/L, 10.0μg/L, and 100.0 μg/L. Both mussels and snails exposed to Cu showed a significant increase in the percent of destabilized lysosomes compared …

Conserving Our Cultural Heritage: The Role Of Fungi In Biodeterioration, Hanna Szczepanowska, A. R. Cavaliere Jan 2012

Conserving Our Cultural Heritage: The Role Of Fungi In Biodeterioration, Hanna Szczepanowska, A. R. Cavaliere

Biology Faculty Publications

The objects of cultural heritage are composed of varied materials which can be affected by diverse microbial communities. The study of these complex and heterogeneous assemblies of materials and microorganisms require an inter- and multi-disciplinary approach. Development of a strategy towards prevention, mitigation of biodeterioration and removal of microorganisms, especially fungi begins with the understanding of the materials' fabric, assessment of causes behind the biodeterioration, and the context in which it occurs.

Three aspects of biodeterioration of cultural heritage are discussed: 1) the multitude of bio-agents' on cultural heritage materials, 2) fungal interaction with substrates, and 3) prevention and conservation …

The Role Of Cadmium And Nickel In Estrogen Receptor Signaling And Breast Cancer: Metalloestrogens Or Not?, Natalie B. Aquino, Mary B. Sevigny, Jackielyn Sabangan, Maggie C. Louie Jan 2012

The Role Of Cadmium And Nickel In Estrogen Receptor Signaling And Breast Cancer: Metalloestrogens Or Not?, Natalie B. Aquino, Mary B. Sevigny, Jackielyn Sabangan, Maggie C. Louie

Collected Faculty Scholarship

During the last half-century, incidences of breast cancer have increased globally. Various factors —genetic and environmental— have been implicated in the initiation and progression of this disease. One potential environmental risk factor that has not received a lot of attention is the exposure to heavy metals. While several mechanisms have been put forth describing how high concentrations of heavy metals play a role in carcinogenesis, it is unclear whether chronic, lowlevel exposure to certain heavy metals (i.e. cadmium and nickel), can directly result in the development and progression of cancer. Cadmium and nickel have been hypothesized to play a role …

Use Of Aminocyclopyrachlor For Forestry Site Preparation In The Southeastern U.S., Andrew W. Ezell, Ronnie Turner, Jimmie L. Yeiser

Faculty Publications

It is not often that new chemistry is made available for use in forestry applications. Aminocyclopyrachlor is a new active ingredient which may have usefulness as a forestry herbicide. Research using this active ingredient began in 2005 and is continuing in university projects across the South. Both hardwood control efficacy and pine tolerance have been evaluated in these trials. A total of 60 different treatments have been evaluated for use in site preparation applications in Mississippi and Texas. This herbicide is effective on a number of species including some invasive exotics. It will probably not be a stand alone treatment, …

Short-Term Carbon Partitioning Fertilizer Responses Vary Among Two Full-Sib Loblolly Pine Clones, Jeremy P. Stovall, John R. Seiler, Thomas R. Fox Jan 2012

Short-Term Carbon Partitioning Fertilizer Responses Vary Among Two Full-Sib Loblolly Pine Clones, Jeremy P. Stovall, John R. Seiler, Thomas R. Fox

Faculty Publications

We investigated the effects of fertilizer application on the partitioning of gross primary productivity (GPP) between contrasting full-sib clones of Pinus taeda (L.). Our objective was to determine if fertilizer growth responses resulted from similar short-term changes to partitioning. A modeling approach incorporating respiratory carbon (C) fluxes, soil CO2 efflux (FS), and biomass was applied to a factorial design with two clones, fertilizer and control treatments, and four sequential monthly harvests of seedlings planted in a greenhouse. Partitioning was integrated over 121 days to above, belowground, and total net primary production (ANPP + BNPP = NPP), total belowground C flux …

Nest Success And Hatchling Survival Of American Alligators Within Inland Wetlands Of East Texas, Warren C. Conway, Gary Calkins, David Saalfeld Jan 2012

Nest Success And Hatchling Survival Of American Alligators Within Inland Wetlands Of East Texas, Warren C. Conway, Gary Calkins, David Saalfeld

Faculty Publications

Because of liberalization of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) harvest management in Texas, estimates of nest success and hatchling survival for inland populations are essential for long-term, sustainable population and harvest management. To date, few studies have examined American alligator nest success and hatchling survival. We initiated a 3-year study from 2006 to 2008 to document alligator nest success and hatchling survival within several wetlands in east Texas. From June 2006 to August 2008, we located 30 nests from 3 wetlands within east Texas, where overall nest success was 44.2% (95% CI=25.1– 63.1%), irrespective of year. Nest circumference and day during …

Snowy Plover Nest Site Selection, Spatial Patterning, And Temperatures In The Southern High Plains Of Texas, David Saalfeld, Warren C. Conway, William P. Johnson, David A. Haukos

Faculty Publications

Snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus) populations have declined throughout their range, in part because of habitat degradation and poor nest success, making information regarding regionally specific nest site selection and spatial patterns important when considering habitat conservation and management guidelines. We determined nest site selection characteristics (n=80) and examined spatial patterns (n=215) of snowy plover nests in saline lakes in the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas. At 104 nests, we examined the influence of substrate type on nest temperatures and heat mitigation. Snowy plover nests were more likely to be found near an object, on pebble substrate, and with fewer …

Perceptual Enhancement Of Arteriovenous Malformation In Mri Angiography Displays, Abhari Kamyar, John S. H. Baxter, Roy Eagleson, Terry Peters, Sandrine De Ribaupierre

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

The importance of presenting medical images in an intuitive and usable manner during a procedure is essential. However, most medical visualization interfaces, particularly those designed for minimally-invasive surgery, suffer from a number of issues as a consequence of disregarding the human perceptual, cognitive, and motor system's limitations. This matter is even more prominent when human visual system is overlooked during the design cycle. One example is the visualization of the neuro-vascular structures in MR angiography (MRA) images. This study investigates perceptual performance in the usability of a display to visualize blood vessels in MRA volumes using a contour enhancement technique. …

Emerging Role Of Ilk And Elmo2 In The Integration Of Adhesion And Migration Pathways, Ernest Ho, Lina Dagnino Jan 2012

Emerging Role Of Ilk And Elmo2 In The Integration Of Adhesion And Migration Pathways, Ernest Ho, Lina Dagnino

Paediatrics Publications

Integrins and their associated proteins are essential components of the cellular machinery that modulates adhesion and migration. In particular, integrinlinked kinase (ILK), which binds to the cytoplasmic tail of β1 integrins, is required for migration in a variety of cell types. We previously identified engulfment and motility 2 (ELMO2) as an ILK-binding protein in epidermal keratinocytes. Recently, we investigated the biological role of the ILK/ELMO2 complexes, and found that they exist in the cytoplasm. ILK/ELMO2 species are recruited by active RhoG to the plasma membrane, where they induce Rac1 activation and formation of lamellipodia at the leading edge of migrating …

Analysis Of Cell Cycle Position In Mammalian Cells, Matthew J. Cecchini, Mehdi Amiri, Frederick A. Dick Jan 2012

Analysis Of Cell Cycle Position In Mammalian Cells, Matthew J. Cecchini, Mehdi Amiri, Frederick A. Dick

Paediatrics Publications

The regulation of cell proliferation is central to tissue morphogenesis during the development of multicellular organisms. Furthermore, loss of control of cell proliferation underlies the pathology of diseases like cancer. As such there is great need to be able to investigate cell proliferation and quantitate the proportion of cells in each phase of the cell cycle. It is also of vital importance to indistinguishably identify cells that are replicating their DNA within a larger population. Since a cell′s decision to proliferate is made in the G1 phase immediately before initiating DNA synthesis and progressing through the rest of the cell …

Bmp Signaling Induces Visceral Endoderm Differentiation Of Xen Cells And Parietal Endoderm, Agnieszka Paca, Cheryle A. Séguin, Melanie Clements, Michael Ryczko, Janet Rossant, Tristan A. Rodriguez, Tilo Kunath Jan 2012

Bmp Signaling Induces Visceral Endoderm Differentiation Of Xen Cells And Parietal Endoderm, Agnieszka Paca, Cheryle A. Séguin, Melanie Clements, Michael Ryczko, Janet Rossant, Tristan A. Rodriguez, Tilo Kunath

Paediatrics Publications

The extraembryonic endoderm of mammals is essential for nutritive support of the fetus and patterning of the early embryo. Visceral and parietal endoderm are major subtypes of this lineage with the former exhibiting most, if not all, of the embryonic patterning properties. Extraembryonic endoderm (XEN) cell lines derived from the primitive endoderm of mouse blastocysts represent a cell culture model of this lineage, but are biased towards parietal endoderm in culture and in chimeras. In an effort to promote XEN cells to adopt visceral endoderm character we have mimicked different aspects of the in vivo environment. We found that BMP …
