Mental Health And The Paranormal, Simon Dein Jan 2012

Mental Health And The Paranormal, Simon Dein

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

To date, there has been a dearth of work examining the relationships between paranormal

experiences and mental health. After defining paranormal experience and its prevalence,

I examine a number of areas related to paranormal experience and psychopathology: psi

and the unconscious, dissociation and fantasy proneness, schizotypy, transliminality and

reality monitoring, child abuse, reasoning and information processing, and transpersonal

psychology. Finally, I discuss the clinical implications of these findings.

The Role Of Corticotropin-Releasing Factor In The Behavior And Proinflammatory Activity Of Separated Guinea Pig Pups, Vincent Rasahd Alexander Jan 2012

The Role Of Corticotropin-Releasing Factor In The Behavior And Proinflammatory Activity Of Separated Guinea Pig Pups, Vincent Rasahd Alexander

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Isolation of guinea pig pups in a novel environment first produces active behaviors such as vocalizing and movement; over time, these behaviors wane and pups show characteristic passive responses similar to those produced by increased proinflammatory activity. Further, isolation of pups on two consecutive days has recently been shown to enhance those passive responses on the second day. Endogenous proinflammatory activity is thought to mediate the enhancement (sensitization). An injection of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has been shown to increase passive behavior, possibly by increasing proinflammatory activity. The present study further investigated the role of CRF on proinflammatory activity and behavior …

Mechanisms Of Success: Plant-Herbivore Interactions And The Invasion Of Non-Native Lonicera Species In North America, Deah Lieurance Jan 2012

Mechanisms Of Success: Plant-Herbivore Interactions And The Invasion Of Non-Native Lonicera Species In North America, Deah Lieurance

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Invasion by non-native species is a complicated process and many hypotheses have been proposed to explain how invasive plant species are often poor competitors in their native range, but dominant in their novel range including the enemy release and novel weapons hypotheses. Additionally, many invasive species are characterized as being tolerant and/or resistant to both damage and limitations in abiotic resources. These hypotheses are based on plant-plant, plant-microbial, and plant-herbivore interactions in the invaders novel range and are not mutually exclusive. The genus Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae) includes approximately 200 species worldwide, with 18 native and 16 introduced species in North America. …

Novel Report Of Expression And Function Of Cd97 In Malignant Gliomas: Correlation With Wilms Tumor 1 Expression And Glioma Cell Invasiveness Laboratory Investigation, Archana Chidambaram, Helen L. Fillmore, Timothy E. Van Meter, Catherine I. Dumur, William C. Broaddus

Division of Research and Economic Development Faculty & Staff Publications

Object. The Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) protein—a developmentally regulated transcription factor—is aberrantly expressed in gliomas and promotes their malignant phenotype. However, little is known about the molecular allies that help it mediate its oncogenic functions in glioma cells.

Methods. The authors used short interfering RNA (siRNA) to suppress WT1 expression in glioblastoma (GBM) cells and evaluated the effect of this on GBM cell invasiveness. Gene expression analysis was then used to identify the candidate genes that were altered as a result of WT1 silencing. One candidate target, CD97, was then selected for further investigation into its role by suppressing …

Paying The Price Of Civilization, Mindy Peden Jan 2012

Paying The Price Of Civilization, Mindy Peden

Political Science

Liberal democratic theory has not adequately addressed the tension between democracy and capitalism and this can be seen most clearly when trying to develop a political theory of taxation. Liberal democratic and public finance experts on taxation have focused on principles of justice and fairness. The imposition of specific kinds of taxes on Africans well after the beginning of colonialism in South Africa will help shed light on the internal challenges to liberalism that such a principled approach to taxation reveals. Through an extended exegesis on colonial tax policy, I will show how a faith in civilization, a racialized belief …

Critical Roles Of Rna-Binding Proteins In Mirna Biogenesis In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Bin Yu Jan 2012

Critical Roles Of Rna-Binding Proteins In Mirna Biogenesis In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression and play critical roles in modulating metabolism, development and physiology in animals and plants. miRNA levels are transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally controlled for their proper function. Recent studies have shown that RNA-binding proteins play important roles in producing miRNAs by affecting the accurate and/or efficient processing of precursors of miRNAs. Many of these RNA-binding proteins also have roles in general RNA metabolism, indicating potential connections between miRNA biogenesis and other RNA metabolism. Here, we focus on the function of several RNA-binding proteins in miRNA biogenesis in Arabidopsis.

Pseudomonas Syringae Catalases Are Collectively Required For Plant Pathogenesis, Ming Guo, Anna Block, Crystal D. Bryan, Donald F. Becker, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 must detoxify plant-produced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in order to survive in its host plant. Candidate enzymes for this detoxification include the monofunctional catalases KatB and KatE and the bifunctional catalase-peroxidase KatG of DC3000. This study shows that KatG is the major housekeeping catalase of DC3000 and provides protection against menadione-generated endogenous H2O2. In contrast, KatB rapidly and substantially accumulates in response to exogenous H2O2. Furthermore, KatB and KatG have nonredundant roles in detoxifying exogenous H2O2 and are …

Post-Transcriptional Control Of Mirna Abundance In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Bin Yu Jan 2012

Post-Transcriptional Control Of Mirna Abundance In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs (small RNAs) that are 20–24nt in length and predominantly repress gene expression at post-transcriptional levels. They regulate many biological processes including development, metabolism and physiology. Numerous studies have revealed that the steady-state levels of miRNA are under sophisticated control to ensure their proper function. In this review, we summarize recent advances on regulation of miRNA processing and stability in plants.

Uridylation Of Mirnas By Hen1 Suppressor1 In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Xuemei Chen, Bin Yu Jan 2012

Uridylation Of Mirnas By Hen1 Suppressor1 In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Xuemei Chen, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

HEN1-mediated 2′-O-methylation has been shown to be a key mechanism to protect plant microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) as well as animal piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) from degradation and 3′ terminal uridylation [1–8]. However, enzymes uridylating unmethylated miRNAs, siRNAs, or piRNAs in hen1 are unknown. In this study, a genetic screen identified a second-site mutation hen1 suppressor1-2 (heso1-2) that partially suppresses the morphological phenotypes of the hypomorphic hen1-2 allele and the null hen1-1 allele in Arabidopsis. HESO1 encodes a terminal nucleotidyl transferase that prefers to add untemplated uridine to the 3′ end of RNA, which is …

The Dna- And Rna-Binding Protein Factor Of Dna Methylation 1 Requires Xh Domain-Mediated Complex Formation For Its Function In Rna-Directed Dna Methylation, Meng Xie, Guodong Ren, Chi Zhang, Bin Yu Jan 2012

The Dna- And Rna-Binding Protein Factor Of Dna Methylation 1 Requires Xh Domain-Mediated Complex Formation For Its Function In Rna-Directed Dna Methylation, Meng Xie, Guodong Ren, Chi Zhang, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Studies have identified a sub-group of SGS3-LIKE proteins including FDM1–5 and IDN2 as key components of RNA-directed DNA methylation pathway (RdDM). Although FDM1 and IDN2 bind RNAs with 5' overhangs, their functions in the RdDM pathway remain to be examined. Here we show that FDM1 interacts with itself and with IDN2. Gel filtration suggests that FDM1 may exist as a homodimer in a heterotetramer complex in vivo. The XH domain of FDM1 mediates the FDM1–FDM1 and FDM1–IDN2 interactions. Deletion of the XH domain disrupts FDM1 complex formation and results in loss-of-function of FDM1. These results demonstrate that XH domainmediated …

Contesting Neoliberalism Through Critical Pedagogy, Intersectional Reflexivity, And Personal Narrative: Queer Tales Of Academia, Richard G. Jones, Bernadette Marie Calafell

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In this essay, we use personal narrative to explore allies and alliance building between marginalized people working in and through higher education, with an eye toward interrogating the ways in which ideologies of neoliberalism work to maintain hierarchy through the legitimation of Othering. Inspired by Conquergood (1985), who calls scholars to engage in intimate conversation rather than distanced observation, we offer our embodied experiences as a way to use the personal to reflect upon the cultural, social and political. Our narratives often recount being out of place, moments of incongruence, or our marked Otherness. Through the sharing of these narratives, …

Predicting Disengagement From Care In An Early Psychosis Patient Cohort In The United States, Matthew Kruse Jan 2012

Predicting Disengagement From Care In An Early Psychosis Patient Cohort In The United States, Matthew Kruse

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The current study aims to assess baseline variables which may predict disengagement from care among patients with psychosis seeking treatment at an early intervention clinic in the United States. Based on literature published at sites outside the United States, we predict that duration of untreated psychosis, global assessment of functioning, forensic history, family contact, and substance abuse are predictive of disengagement during the first year of outpatient treatment. Patients were grouped according to whether or not they disengaged from care in a one year follow-up, and compared them on the above discrete and continuous variables with chi-square analysis and Student‟s …

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Alaska encompasses several climate types because of its vast size, high-latitude location, proximity to oceans, and complex topography. There is a great need to understand how climate varies regionally for climatic research and forecasting applications. Although climate-type zones have been established for Alaska on the basis of seasonal climatological mean behavior, there has been little attempt to construct climate divisions that identify regions with consistently homogeneous climatic variability. In this study, cluster analysis was applied to monthly-average temperature data from 1977 to 2010 at a robust set of weather stations to develop climate divisions for the state. Mean-adjusted Advanced Very …

Development Of A Soil Carbon Index For Iowa Mineral Soils, M. M. Al-Kaisi, T. E. Fenton, J. G. Guzman, B. R. O'Neal

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A carbon index (Cl) is one of many soil quality indicators that depends on organic carbon concentration. One of the values of a soil carbon index is in determining the impact of agriculture practices (i.e., tillage, crop rotation, N management, etc.) on soil organic matter status of mineral soils. Interactions of climate, parent material, topography, time, and organisms including human activities influence soil organic carbon (SOC). This study developed a soil carbon index for mineral soil map units in Iowa using data collected by the Iowa Cooperative Soil Survey Laboratory and the USDA Soil Survey Laboratory for over 2,300 soil …

2012-13 Series - Chris Mooney, University Center For The Humanities

University Center for the Humanities Events

Over the past decade in America, science has grown increasingly politicized. Scientists roundly denounced the administration of George W. Bush for suppressing research and taking anti-scientific positions; when President Obama came in, he promised great changes but did not always deliver. And now what?

In this talk, Chris Mooney, who has covered the politics of science for a decade in Washington D.C., takes a look at the future of science policy under the next president (Obama or Romney). Will climate change legislation pass? Will the administration take science seriously?

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir Jan 2012

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Aerodynamic characteristics of a racing car are of significant interest in reducing car-racing accidents due to wind loading and in reducing the fuel consumption. At the present, modified car racing becomes more popular around the world. Sports cars are most commonly seen with spoilers, such as Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza, and Chevrolet Corvette. Even though these vehicles typically have a more rigid chassis and a stiffer suspension to aid in high-speed maneuverability, a spoiler can still be beneficial. One of the design goals of a spoiler is to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Many vehicles have a fairly steep …

The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability And Change In Diversified Farming Systems, Christopher M. Bacon, Christy Getz, Sibella Kraus, Maywa Montenegro, Kaelin Holland

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Agricultural systems are embedded in wider social-ecological processes that must be considered in any complete discussion of sustainable agriculture. Just as climatic profiles will influence the future viability of crops, institutions, i.e., governance agreements, rural household and community norms, local associations, markets, and agricultural ministries, to name but a few, create the conditions that foster sustainable food systems. Because discussions of agricultural sustainability often overlook the full range of social dimensions, we propose a dual focus on a broad set of criteria, i.e., human health, labor, democratic participation, resiliency, biological and cultural diversity, equity, and ethics, to assess social outcomes, …
