The Touchiest Topic In High School: A Textual Analysis Of Public High School Policies Regarding Student-To-Student Touch, Adam Burl Jan 2012

The Touchiest Topic In High School: A Textual Analysis Of Public High School Policies Regarding Student-To-Student Touch, Adam Burl

McNair Scholars Journal

This paper opens the conversation about student-to-student touch practices, conceptions, and regulations within American public high schools. Prior research has shown that positive experiences with touch serve a vital role in child and adolescent development. Friendly touch behaviors benefit children and teen-aged persons both physiologically and psychologically. Additionally, haptic interaction is arguably the deepest form of communication. Yet scholars seldom examine how communication practices contribute to how individuals, including children, experience touch in various contexts. The current project analyzes the way touch is described, addressed, and framed in the student handbooks of public high schools from the state of Michigan. …

Three Studies To Investigate Biopsychosocial Influences On Marital Conflict, Claire Kimberly Jan 2012

Three Studies To Investigate Biopsychosocial Influences On Marital Conflict, Claire Kimberly

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Research is beginning to find a positive and significant relationship between marriage and health. Even though the current literature shows that separation and divorce have strong negative consequences for the mental and physical health of both spouses (Dush & Amato, 2005), the answer to why and how this occurs has yet to be solved.

A comprehensive perspective that could greatly benefit the analysis of this connection is the use of social neuroscientific methods in a biopsychosocial model. By including biological factors, social elements, and psychological variables in analyzing marriages, researchers would be able to further understand both the intra- and …

Effects Of Ungulate Herbivory On Aspen, Cottonwood, And Willow Development Under Forest Fuels Treatment Regimes, Bryan A. Endress, Michael J. Wisdom, Martin Vavra, Catherine G. Parks, Brian L. Dick, Bridgett J. Naylor, Jennifer M. Boyd

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Herbivory by domestic and wild ungulates can dramatically affect vegetation structure, composition and dynamics in nearly every terrestrial ecosystem of the world. These effects are of particular concern in forests of western North America, where intensive herbivory by native and domestic ungulates has the potential to substantially reduce or eliminate deciduous, highly palatable species of aspen (Populus tremuloides), cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), and willow (Salix spp.). In turn, differential herbivory pressure may favor greater establishment of unpalatable conifers that serve as ladder fuels for stand-replacing fires. The resulting high fuel loads often require silvicultural fuels reductions …

1 DISRUPT Micro-Flake Verbenone Bark Beetle Anti-Aggregant flakes (Hercon Environmental, Inc., Emigsville, Pennsylvania) were applied in two large-scale tests to assess their efficacy for protecting whitebark pine Pinus albicaulis Engelm. from attack by mountain pine beetle Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) (MPB). At two locations, five plots of equivalent size and stand structure served as untreated controls. All plots had early- to mid-outbreak beetle populations (i.e. 7.1–29.2 attacked trees/ha). Verbenone was applied at 370 g/ha in both studies. Intercept traps baited with MPB aggregation pheromone were placed near the corners of each plot after the treatment in order to monitor …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

  • Nonstructural carbohydrate reserves support tree metabolism and growth when current photosynthates are insufficient, offering resilience in times of stress.
  • We monitored stemwood nonstructural carbohydrate (starch and sugars) concentrations of the dominant tree species at three sites in the northeastern United States. We estimated the mean age of the starch and sugars in a subset of trees using the radiocarbon (14C) bomb spike. With these data, we then tested different carbon (C) allocation schemes in a process-based model of forest C cycling.
  • We found that the nonstructural carbohydrates are both highly dynamic and about a decade old. Seasonal dynamics …

Effects Of Curcumin On Stem-Like Cells In Human Esophageal Squamous Carcinoma Cell Lines, Michael Eric Geusz, Taghreed N. Almanaa, Roudabeh J. Jamasbi

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Many cancers contain cell subpopulations that display characteristics of stem cells. Because these cancer stem cells (CSCs) appear to provide resistance to chemo-radiation therapy, development of therapeutic agents that target CSCs is essential. Curcumin is a phytochemical agent that is currently used in clinical trials to test its effectiveness against cancer. However, the effect of curcumin on CSCs is not well established. The current study evaluated curcumin-induced cell death in six cancer cell lines derived from human esophageal squamous cell carcinomas. Moreover, these cell lines and the ones established from cells that survived curcumin treatments were characterized. Methods: Cell loss …

Unintended Fertility And The Stability Of Coresidential Relationships, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford Jan 2012

Unintended Fertility And The Stability Of Coresidential Relationships, Karen Guzzo, Sarah Hayford

Sociology Faculty Publications

Having an unintended birth is associated with maternal and child health outcomes, the mother-child relationship, and subsequent fertility. Unintended fertility likely also increases the risk of union dissolution for parents, but it is unclear whether this association derives from a causal effect or selection processes and whether it differs by union type. This article uses data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth to compare union stability after intended and unintended births in coresidential relationships. Results show that coresidential couples are more likely to break up after an unintended first or higher-order birth than after an intended first or …

Effects Of Combined Opioids On Pain And Mood In Mammals, David J. Mokler, Richard H. Rech, Shannon L. Briggs Jan 2012

Effects Of Combined Opioids On Pain And Mood In Mammals, David J. Mokler, Richard H. Rech, Shannon L. Briggs

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The authors review the opioid literature for evidence of increased analgesia and reduced adverse side effects by combining opioid-receptor (MOR) agonists, kappa-opioid-recepter (KOR) agonists, and nonselective low-dose-opioid antagonists (LD-ANT). We tested fentanyl (MOR agonist) and spiradoline (KOR agonist), singly and combined, against somatic and visceral pain models. Combined agonists induced additive analgesia in somatic pain and synergistic analgesia in visceral pain. Other investigators report similar effects and reduced tolerance and dependence with combined MOR agonist and KOR agonist. LD-Ant added to either a MOR agonist or KOR agonist markedly enhanced analgesia of either agonist. In accordance with other place-condition (PC) …

Studies On The Ecology Of Hive Beetles In Kenya, Teboh Fombong Ayuka Jan 2012

Studies On The Ecology Of Hive Beetles In Kenya, Teboh Fombong Ayuka

All PhD Dissertations

Although beekeeping has become an important economic venture in Kenya, and is being used to alleviate poverty and promote environmental conservation, very little information exists on arthropods associated with honey bees in the country. This is especially true for hive beetles which cause great damage to honey bees and hive products. With knowledge on the biology of these beetles and their chemical ecological interaction with honey bees virtually nonexistent, this study was carried out to close this knowledge gap with the goal of providing key data towards further development into potential management tools for these beetles. Nation-wide surveys in Kenya …

Diversity In Structure, Composition And Properties Of Silk From African Wild Silkmoths, Addis Teshome Kebede Jan 2012

Diversity In Structure, Composition And Properties Of Silk From African Wild Silkmoths, Addis Teshome Kebede

All PhD Dissertations

Wild silk production is a unique eco-friendly agro-practice with enormous potential for income generation and additional benefit of compatibility with conservation goals. African wild silkmoths occur in three major families; Saturniidae, Lasiocampidae and Thaumetopoeidae and have significant economic importance mainly due to their exceptional quality fibers and aesthetic values. Silk cocoon shells from these insects are non-woven structures majorly composed of two proteins, fibroin and sericin, and depending on their origin, exhibit extensive variation in structure, property and composition directly influencing their ecological adaptive functions. Hence, this study was aimed at investigating the extent of variability in structure, composition and …

Post-Speleogenetic Biogenic Modification Of Gomantong Caves, Sabah, Borneo, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Gomantong cave system of eastern Sabah, Malaysia, is well-known as an important site for harvesting edible bird-nests and, more recently, as a tourist attraction. Although the biology of the Gomantong system has been repeatedly studied, very little attention has been given to the geomorphology. Here, we report on the impact of geobiological modification in the development of the modern aspect of the cave, an important but little recognized feature of tropical caves. Basic modeling of the metabolic outputs from bats and birds (CO2, H2O, heat) reveals that post-speleogenetic biogenic corrosion can erode bedrock by between …

Integrating Landis Model And A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Approach To Evaluate Cumulative Effects Of Forest Management In The Missouri Ozarks, Usa, Zongbo Shang, Hong S. He, Weimin Xi, Stephen R. Shifley, Brian J. Palik

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Public forest management requires consideration of numerous objectives including protecting ecosystem health, sustaining habitats for native communities, providing sustainable forest products, and providing noncommodity ecosystem services. It is difficult to evaluate the long-term, cumulative effects and tradeoffs these and other associated management objectives. To demonstrate the capabilities of techniques suitable to support such evaluations we combined a spatially explicit landscape-scale, succession and disturbance model (LANDIS) with wildlife habitat suitability models and a multi-criteria decisionmaking framework to compare four management alternatives across a 700 km2 area of the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri, USA. We estimated the combined, cumulative …

Loss Of Renal Allografts Secondary To Candida Vascular Complications In Two Recipients From The Same Donor, Govardhana R. Yannam, Lucile E. Wrenshall, R. Brian Stevens

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in transplant patients. Organ recipients are also susceptible to donor-derived pathogens and the majority of donor infections are easily treatable. Rarely, some pathogens have produced life-threatening complications by compromising the vascular anastomosis. In this case series we report loss of two kidney allografts secondary to vascular complications due to Candida albicans. Both recipients received grafts from a common donor, in whom Candida bacteremia in the donor was not apparent at the time of organ acceptance but became apparent on delayed cultures.

Professionally Accomplished Women's Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Communication: An Exploratory Study, Teresa M. Scott, Lynne M. Webb, Patricia Amason Jan 2012

Professionally Accomplished Women's Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Communication: An Exploratory Study, Teresa M. Scott, Lynne M. Webb, Patricia Amason

Iowa Journal of Communication

A survey of 75 professionally accomplished women examined father-daughter communication during daughters' middle-aged years. The daughters' perceptions of relational closeness with their fathers were associated with family communication environment (both conversation and conformity-orientation). Furthermore, daughters' conflict management scores for competing-with-fathers were negatively associated with the daughters' state-communication-apprehension scores. Finally, many non-significant results are inconsistent with results previously obtained with college student samples, perhaps indicating that the influence of father-daughter communication may differ across the lifespan.

Trauma And Transformative Passage, Reed A. Morrison Private Practice Jan 2012

Trauma And Transformative Passage, Reed A. Morrison Private Practice

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The strategic introduction of stressors to intentionally produce targeted psychological states

has a long history among indigenous peoples. Rites of passage ceremonies commonly involve

subjecting individuals to controlled violence to attain desired transformative outcomes. In

this context, violence is held to be sacred and generative, ritually introducing distress in

the service of loosening orientation and preparing the individual for spiritual advancement

and the acquisition of a new identity. Traditional ritual initiation ceremonies are typically

tripartite and characterized by stages of Separation, Ordeal, and Return. This article suggests

that accounts of the experiences of initiates in Separation and Ordeal stages bear …
