Happiness, Efficiency, And The Promise Of Decisional Equity: From Outcome To Process, Jeffrey L. Harrison Feb 2012

Happiness, Efficiency, And The Promise Of Decisional Equity: From Outcome To Process, Jeffrey L. Harrison

Pepperdine Law Review

Those who resist the teachings of law and economics are rightfully concerned that economic efficiency is largely based on the predictions of relatively acquisitive people about what will make them feel or be better off. Due to a variety of factors, these predictions often turn out to be wrong. The explosion in happiness research would appear to have the potential to close the link between choices and actual outcomes and, consequently, make the concept of efficiency more meaningful. This Article explores this promising advance. It concludes that direct focus on one concept or another of happiness or "better-off-ness" does not …

Visualizing Actin Regulatory Proteins & The Mechanoelectrical Ion Channel In Inner Ear Stereocilia, Chih-Tao Tu Feb 2012

Visualizing Actin Regulatory Proteins & The Mechanoelectrical Ion Channel In Inner Ear Stereocilia, Chih-Tao Tu

Theses

My thesis was a continuation of the "3D Virtual Ear Animation" project for the Imagine RIT Festival held in spring 2010. I worked with Dr. David Corey, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, whose research publications I had been reading since the spring of 2010. I learned about information that explains how hearing is transformed into neural signals ultimately perceived by the brain. Motivated by the presence of hearing-impaired students on the campus, I decided to continue this animation project. Another motivation for this topic was the lack of illustrations and animations that captured the latest discoveries, particularly the …

Gucy2c Opposes Systemic Genotoxic Tumorigenesis By Regulating Akt-Dependent Intestinal Barrier Integrity, Jieru Egeria Lin, Adam Eugene Snook, Peng Li, Brian Arthur Stoecker, Gilbert Won Kim, Michael Sullivan Magee, Alex Vladimir Mejia Garcia, Michael Anthony Valentino, Terry Hyslop, Stephanie Schulz, Scott Arthur Waldman

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

The barrier separating mucosal and systemic compartments comprises epithelial cells, annealed by tight junctions, limiting permeability. GUCY2C recently emerged as an intestinal tumor suppressor coordinating AKT1-dependent crypt-villus homeostasis. Here, the contribution of GUCY2C to barrier integrity opposing colitis and systemic tumorigenesis is defined. Mice deficient in GUCY2C (Gucy2c−/−) exhibited barrier hyperpermeability associated with reduced junctional proteins. Conversely, activation of GUCY2C in mice reduced barrier permeability associated with increased junctional proteins. Further, silencing GUCY2C exacerbated, while activation reduced, chemical barrier disruption and colitis. Moreover, eliminating GUCY2C amplified, while activation reduced, systemic oxidative DNA damage. This genotoxicity was associated …

Heterogeneity In Genetic Diversity Among Non-Coding Loci Fails To Fit Neutral Coalescent Models Of Population History, Jeffrey L. Peters, Trina E. Roberts, Kevin Winker, Kevin G. Mccracken Feb 2012

Heterogeneity In Genetic Diversity Among Non-Coding Loci Fails To Fit Neutral Coalescent Models Of Population History, Jeffrey L. Peters, Trina E. Roberts, Kevin Winker, Kevin G. Mccracken

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Inferring aspects of the population histories of species using coalescent analyses of non-coding nuclear DNA has grown in popularity. These inferences, such as divergence, gene flow, and changes in population size, assume that genetic data reflect simple population histories and neutral evolutionary processes. However, violating model assumptions can result in a poor fit between empirical data and the models. We sampled 22 nuclear intron sequences from at least 19 different chromosomes (a genomic transect) to test for deviations from selective neutrality in the gadwall (Anas strepera), a Holarctic duck. Nucleotide diversity among these loci varied by nearly two …

Effects Of Road Salt On Photosynthetic And Enzyme Activity Of Stream Biofilms, Leah Cook Feb 2012

Effects Of Road Salt On Photosynthetic And Enzyme Activity Of Stream Biofilms, Leah Cook

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Road salt application and salt-laden run-off are common, yet little information exists about its influence on periphyton. I measured extracelluar enzyme activity and photosynthetic activity of natural winter stream periphyton communities under various short-term laboratory salt exposures. The results of this study suggest that short-term exposure to increased concentrations of salt did not affect extracelluar enzyme activity but could temporarily reduce the photosynthetic activity of the periphyton. Further work will be necessary to understand the longterm effects of increased salt concentrations on periphyton and extracellular enzyme activity.

An In Vivo Study On The Diuretic Activity Of Holarrhena Antidysenterica, Aslam Khan, Samra Bashir, Anwar Hassan Gilani Feb 2012

An In Vivo Study On The Diuretic Activity Of Holarrhena Antidysenterica, Aslam Khan, Samra Bashir, Anwar Hassan Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Holarrhena antidysenterica is used as diuretic in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the crude extract of H. antidysentrica seeds (Ha.Cr) and its fractions, n-hexane (Ha.Hx), n-butanol (Ha.Bu) and aqueous (Ha.Aq), for their diuretic effect in Wistar rats and to investigate whether the activity is concentrated in any of the fractions. Wistar rats kept on fasting for 24 h with water ad labium, divided into normal, positive control and treated groups were orally given normal saline (20 ml/kg), hydrochlorothiazide (HCT; 10 mg/kg) and different doses of the plant material, respectively. Immediately after dosing, the rats were …

The Evolutionary Host Switches Of Polychromophilus: A Multi-Gene Phylogeny Of The Bat Malaria Genus Suggests A Second Invasion Of Mammals By A Haemosporidian Parasite, Fardo Witsenburg, Nicolas Salamin, Philippe Christe Feb 2012

The Evolutionary Host Switches Of Polychromophilus: A Multi-Gene Phylogeny Of The Bat Malaria Genus Suggests A Second Invasion Of Mammals By A Haemosporidian Parasite, Fardo Witsenburg, Nicolas Salamin, Philippe Christe

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Background: The majority of Haemosporida species infect birds or reptiles, but many important genera, including Plasmodium, infect mammals. Dipteran vectors shared by avian, reptilian and mammalian Haemosporida, suggest multiple invasions of Mammalia during haemosporidian evolution; yet, phylogenetic analyses have detected only a single invasion event. Until now, several important mammal-infecting genera have been absent in these analyses. This study focuses on the evolutionary origin of Polychromophilus, a unique malaria genus that only infects bats (Microchiroptera) and is transmitted by bat flies (Nycteribiidae).

Methods: Two species of Polychromophilus were obtained from wild bats caught in Switzerland. These …
