Development Of An Artificial Immune System Based Intruder Detection Algorithm For Comparison With A Novel Intruder Detection Strategy., Jaden Caradine

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

"This project aims to develop an Artificial Immune System inspired intruder detection system based on current state-of-the-art strategies. Traditional intruder detection systems are not equipped to handle the evolving landscape of cyber security. Signature based detection systems require a database of known signatures and traditional anomaly detection systems are plagued with false positives. By contrast, Artificial Immune Systems can respond to threats never encountered. They are adaptive, proactive, and resilient to interference. This makes them ideal for determining when a system is behaving abnormally. Researchers are developing a novel intruder detection system, but they need a baseline to compare it …

Microbial Succession And Diversity Shifts In Manure-Amended Lunar Regolith Cultivated With Mizuna Mustard, Nupur Kulkarni, Stefani Capasso Villaneuva

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Developing microbial communities capable of supporting plants in regolith analogs is essential for in-situ resource utilization and life-support systems. We investigated how Mizuna mustard (Brassica rapa var. japonica) cultivation and manure amendment restructure microbiomes in a lunar regolith simulant (LHS-1). Four treatments: Unplanted manure-amended regolith (LRM), planted manure-amended regolith (LRMP), planted unamended regolith (LRP), and soil controls, were compared using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Alpha diversity increased from unplanted substrates to rhizosphere samples, and beta diversity showed strong compositional separation (PERMANOVA R² = 0.82, p = 0.01). LRMP rhizospheres shifted from Firmicutes dominance toward soil-like communities enriched in Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, …

Requirements gathering is a fundamental step in the systems engineering lifecycle, shaping the success of space missions. This research focuses on refining the requirements development process through a structured methodology, using Project COMET—a University Nanosatellite Program (UNP) mission—as a case study. While Project COMET encompasses various design and operational challenges, this study is centered specifically on improving requirement identification, analysis, and validation for small satellite development. The research employs a three-stage workshop-based approach. The first stage involves functional decomposition, breaking down mission objectives into system-level needs and identifying key constraints. The second stage explores structured problem-framing techniques to enhance requirement …

Development Of A Planar 3-Dof Multi-Agent Apriltag Localization System With Predictive Track Recovery Under Intermittent Detection Loss, Timothy Mascal Feb 2026

Development Of A Planar 3-Dof Multi-Agent Apriltag Localization System With Predictive Track Recovery Under Intermittent Detection Loss, Timothy Mascal

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Research into multi-agent swarming leverages multiple low-cost agents to perform tasks resulting in a more resilience, scalable, and efficient systems compared to systems using single agents. To support research on multi-agent swarming, there is a need for a low-cost system that reliably localizes multiple agents moving on a plane in three degrees of freedom (x, y, yaw). Existing approaches utilize an overhead camera with fiducial markers to perform localization but suffer performance degradation when agents undergo maneuvers featuring fast rotations and translations. The induced motion blur causes intermittent detection loss. This work proposes a localization system that maintains agent localization …

Investigation Of Biofilm Formation And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Nonmotile E. Coli Mg1655 In Simulated Microgravity, Tyler Jenkins Feb 2026

Investigation Of Biofilm Formation And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Nonmotile E. Coli Mg1655 In Simulated Microgravity, Tyler Jenkins

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Simulated microgravity presents multiple physiological stressors for astronauts, including bone demineralization, muscle loss, and weakening of the immune system (Chavez et al., 2024). Bacteria serve as viable model organisms to study physiological changes because of their abundance in the human digestive system and skin. Motility in bacteria plays a significant role in cell survival, but few studies have been conducted on microgravity’s effect on motility phenotypes. While motile strains like K12 have been studied extensively under microgravity conditions (Topolski et al., 2022; Chavez et al., 2024), the effects of simulated microgravity on non-motile strains are largely unknown. To better understand …

Growing Plants On The Moon: How Mizuna Roots And Organic Matter Spark Microbial Metabolism, Stefani Capasso Villanueva, Nupur Kulkarni

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Establishing functional plant–microbe systems in extraterrestrial substrates is critical for sustainable lunar agriculture. We tested whether manure amendment and Mizuna mustard (Brassica rapa var. japonica) rhizosphere activity enhance the metabolic potential of a lunar regolith simulant (LHS-1). Plants were grown in four treatments: Unplanted manure-amended regolith (LRM), planted manure-amended regolith (LRMP), planted unamended regolith (LRP), and soil controls. Plant height and community-level physiological profiles (CLPP; Biolog EcoPlates) were measured to assess growth and metabolic diversity. Mizuna grew best in soil, with modest improvements in LRMP compared to LRP, though regolith treatment differences were not statistically significant. CLPP revealed the highest …

Development Of An Ied Response Model For Testing Of The Snapping Shrimp Resource Allocation Algorithm, Joanna Morris Feb 2026

Development Of An Ied Response Model For Testing Of The Snapping Shrimp Resource Allocation Algorithm, Joanna Morris

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

"Models must be capable of demonstrating adaptability across multiple case studies to confirm their reliability and versatility. The Snapping Shrimp Resource Allocation Algorithm, which has been successfully applied in a wildfire response scenario, models efficient, decentralized coordination inspired by the behavior of snapping shrimp. Building on this foundation, the current work explores the potential application of the Snapping Shrimp Resource Allocation algorithm to improvised explosive device response where rapid, autonomous coordination could significantly enhance safety and operational efficiency. Improvised explosive devices remain a persistent issue in modern conflict, requiring strategies for response that are cost-effective, scalable, and capable of adapting …

Evidence For Robustness Of Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm: Examining New Model Parameters And New Fault Types, Grace Gratton, Morgan Kendall Feb 2026

Evidence For Robustness Of Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm: Examining New Model Parameters And New Fault Types, Grace Gratton, Morgan Kendall

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Robustness to faulted agents in consensus algorithms within a multi-agent system is a critical requirement for reliable systems. Faulted agents can compromise the swarm, leading to catastrophic consequences, including economic impacts and possible loss of life. Therefore, it is critical to develop robust consensus algorithms to ensure the security and reliability of the systems we rely upon. Biologically Inspired Design previously led to the Synchronous Hatching Consensus Algorithm, which was robust up to 20% faulted agents reporting false positives, but not robust to faulted agents reporting false negatives. This work builds upon the previous model by increasing robustness to both …

Introducing A Test Of Audience And Message: A Strategic Reassessment Of Wmd Non-State Terrorism, Brianne Bernhardt Feb 2026

Introducing A Test Of Audience And Message: A Strategic Reassessment Of Wmd Non-State Terrorism, Brianne Bernhardt

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Defense and intelligence communities continue to face the persistent challenge of assessing which non-state terrorist groups may employ weapons of mass destruction (WMD). With an overwhelming influx of information, this question remains difficult for analysts to answer with precision. Existing non-state terrorist WMD threat assessment models tend to rely on post-hoc analysis or speculative forecasting and lack scalable, data-driven frameworks for proactive evaluation. This paper addresses that gap by proposing an empirical testing of a theoretical model by Dr. Daniel Gressang, which suggests that determining three key variables—a group’s audience, message, and societal relationship—may allow analysts to assess the potential …

Entrepreneurial New Firm Survival As A Performance Indicator : A Multi-Level Process Perspective, Szabolcs Németh, Andrea Bikfalvi Phd, Neus Vila-Brunet

Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship

Understanding the survival of new firms requires examining the intricate interplay of internal and external factors across various levels and stages. While existing literature often emphasizes performance metrics, mortality rates, or antecedents of survival, it frequently overlooks the dynamic and continuous nature of entrepreneurial survival. This study extends empirical research on new firm survival through multiple case studies of seven incubated firms within four incubators in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. aiming to (1) examine new firm survival as a performance indicator by categorizing the elements of the process across various levels and stages; (2) integrate the factors influencing survival by identifying …
