Comparing The Demographics Of Two Steelhead Populations And Their Habitat Characteristics, Eileen Ann Baglivio Mar 2012

Comparing The Demographics Of Two Steelhead Populations And Their Habitat Characteristics, Eileen Ann Baglivio

Master's Theses

Currently, little is known about the demographics of the Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus, or steelhead trout, populations in San Luis Obispo County. Specifically, demographic information including length, age, and condition when first leaving a watershed for the open ocean is lacking. This thesis takes a closer look at a biological and environmental data collected by the California Department of Fish and Game Central Coast Steelhead and Coho Salmon project under the direction of Associate Biologist Jennifer Nelson. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze demographic and habitat data from the steelhead populations of two northern San Luis Obispo …

School Racial Composition And Race/Ethnic Differences In Early Adulthood Health, Bridget J. Goosby, Katrina M. Walsemann Mar 2012

School Racial Composition And Race/Ethnic Differences In Early Adulthood Health, Bridget J. Goosby, Katrina M. Walsemann

Faculty Publications

We investigate whether school racial composition is associated with racial and ethnic differences in early adult health. We then examine whether perceived discrimination, social connectedness, and parent support attenuates this relationship. Using U.S. data from Wave I and IV of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, we found that black adolescents attending predominantly white schools reported poorer adult health while Asians reported better health. Further research is warranted to understand whether there are qualitative differences in the treatment of racial and ethnic minorities within certain school contexts and how that differential treatment is related to adult health outcomes.

Assessing Patterns Of Hybridization And Multiple Mechanisms Of Reproductive Isolation Between Erythronium Albidum And Its Congener E. Mesochoreum, Kathy Roccaforte

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Although there are approximately 250,000 extant angiosperm species, we still have much to learn about the speciation process, including the ways in which species boundaries are maintained among closely related taxa. Species are formed when populations become reproductively isolated from each other via genetic and morphological barriers that act before hybrid formation (prezygotic) or after hybrids are formed (postzygotic).

Erythronium albidum Nutt. and Erythronium mesochoreum Knerr (Liliaceae) differ in ploidy, are likely sister species, and have been reported to hybridize, making them well-suited for assessing the strength of multiple reproductive barriers. First, I assessed the frequency of hybrid occurrence at …

Pseudoscorpion Mitochondria Show Rearranged Genes And Genome-Wide Reductions Of Rna Gene Sizes And Inferred Structures, Yet Typical Nucleotide Composition Bias, Sergey Ovchinnikov, Susan E. Masta

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pseudoscorpions are chelicerates and have historically been viewed as being most closely related to solifuges, harvestmen, and scorpions. No mitochondrial genomes of pseudoscorpions have been published, but the mitochondrial genomes of some lineages of Chelicerata possess unusual features, including short rRNA genes and tRNA genes that lack sequence to encode arms of the canonical cloverleaf-shaped tRNA. Additionally, some chelicerates possess an atypical guanine-thymine nucleotide bias on the major coding strand of their mitochondrial genomes.

We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of two divergent taxa from the chelicerate order Pseudoscorpiones. We find that these genomes possess unusually short tRNA genes that do …

The Lau Integrated Study Site (ISS) has provided unique opportunities for study of ridge processes because of its back-arc setting in the southwestern Pacific. Its location allows study of a biogeographical province distinct from those of eastern Pacific and mid-Atlantic ridges, and crustal compositions along the ridge lie outside the range of mid-ocean ridge crustal compositions. The Lau ISS is located above a subduction zone, at an oblique angle. The underlying mantle receives water and other elements derived from the downgoing lithospheric slab, with an increase in slab influence from north to south. Water lowers the mantle melting temperature and …

Almost There, Indeed: Disney Misses The Mark On Modernizing Black Womanhood And Subverting The Princess Tradition In The Princess And The Frog, April Callen

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

The Walt Disney Company released The Princess and the Frog in 2009 to much anticipation and equal antagonism; the movie features the princess franchise’s first Black princess. In the spirit of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, the studio touts the movie as a throwback to the classic era of Disney, but with an updated spin. Disney suggests that the marriage of classic and modern speaks to a return to hand-drawn animation and unlike the original story The Frog Prince, this princess becomes a frog, as well. This project argues, however, that framing The Princess and the Frog within the context …

Effects Of The Manipulation Of Aboveground Plant Diversity In Restoration Management On The Diversity Of Belowground Arthropod Assemblage, Claire E. Gilmore Mar 2012

Effects Of The Manipulation Of Aboveground Plant Diversity In Restoration Management On The Diversity Of Belowground Arthropod Assemblage, Claire E. Gilmore

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

A missing element in restoring belowground soil systems to a relatively healthy state may lie in promoting microarthropod diversity. By contributing to healthy nutrient cycling and assisting in the breakdown of leaf litter a diverse microarthropod population helps improve the overall soil quality. My study evaluated how current restoration practices aimed at maintaining aboveground diversity affects belowground microarthropod populations. I examined how the aboveground manipulation of plant diversity in restoration management practices affects the hyperdiverse assemblage of belowground arthropod communities. Additionally, I examined the relationship between soil nutrient content and microarthropod diversity. This study was conducted within the boundaries of …

Obstacles To Addressing Race And Ethnicity In The Mathematics Education Literature, Amy Noelle Parks, Mardi Schmeichel Mar 2012

Obstacles To Addressing Race And Ethnicity In The Mathematics Education Literature, Amy Noelle Parks, Mardi Schmeichel

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This Research Commentary builds on a 2-stage literature review to argue that there are 4 obstacles to making a sociopolitical turn in mathematics education that would allow researchers to talk about race and ethnicity in ways that take both identity and power seriously. The obstacles discussed are (a) the marginalization of discussions of race and ethnicity; (b) the reiteration of race and ethnicity as independent variables; (c) absence of race and ethnicity from mathematics education research; and (d) the minimizing of discussions of race and ethnicity, even within equity-oriented work.

Commotio retinae is a transient opacification of the retina due to outer retinal disruption occurring in a contrecoup fashion after blunt trauma.Histological studies in animals and humans after ocular blunt trauma have revealed that disruption occurs at the level of the photoreceptor outer segments and retinal pigment epithelium.Recent reports using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have shown detectable disruption at the level of the photoreceptor inner segment/outer segment junction and retinal pigment epithelium and that these changes may be reversible over time with restoration of normal outer retinal architecture. However, the resolution of existing OCT technology may not be sensitive enough to …

Latest Update On The Clinical Features And Management Of Merkel Cell Carcinoma, Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi, Sumaiya Zahid Mar 2012

Latest Update On The Clinical Features And Management Of Merkel Cell Carcinoma, Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi, Sumaiya Zahid

Department of Radiation Oncology

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), is a rare, highly malignant skin tumour, with a poor prognosis. Though the aetiology of MCC is not known, but there are several features that it shares with melanoma. These include the natural history, clinical features and behaviour, e.g. an early spread to nodal sites, high local recurrence rate and early metastasis. Incidence of MCC is seen to be increased in immunosuppressed transplant patients, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and in B cell malignancies, with a strong male predominance. Despite the ongoing research and advancement, MCC yet poses a challenge to the clinicians because of its …

The Transforming Power Of Narrative In Teacher Education, Esther Yim-Mei Chan Mar 2012

The Transforming Power Of Narrative In Teacher Education, Esther Yim-Mei Chan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The focus of this study is to examine pre-service teachers’ experiences of learning through narrative inquiry that gives insight into how teachers’ development and knowledge construction can be improved. The article begins by inquiring into the learning culture in the Hong Kong context and explaining how the examination system affects knowledge construction. Then it discusses the use of narrative curricula to promote students' thinking and self-reflection. A case, explored through a teacher educator's interpretations of experience, is presented to demonstrate how narrative inquiry is able to change the learning habits of pre-service teachers and what it can do to transform …

Structured Reflective Communication As A Meta-Genre In Teacher Education: Creative Uses Of Critique In A Teacher Education Program, Donna Starks, Howard Nicholas, Shem Macdonald Mar 2012

Structured Reflective Communication As A Meta-Genre In Teacher Education: Creative Uses Of Critique In A Teacher Education Program, Donna Starks, Howard Nicholas, Shem Macdonald

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Critical reflection is central to teacher education for unpacking privileged positions and empowering participants to adopt valued professional stances (e.g. Krull, Oras & Sisask, 2007; Harford & MacRuairc, 2008; Fernandez, 2010), yet critical reflection is not a well-developed conceptual structure within teacher education. Lesson planning is, likewise, central to teacher education, yet not well-developed as a theoretical tool. Our model proposes a way of engaging beginning teachers in critical reflection by drawing together the informal spoken discourse meanings of critical reflection in education, its more formalised structure as critique in rhetoric and genre analysis, and lesson planning. When critical reflection …

The Efficacy Of Simulation As A Pedagogy In Facilitating Pre-Service Teachers’ Learning About Emotional Self-Regulation And Its Relevance To The Teaching Profession, Terry De Jong, Jeniffer Lane, Sue Sharp

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study was undertaken in response to the imperative of teacher education courses incorporating National Professional Standards for Teachers, in particular Standard 7, which deals with the professional engagement of teachers (AITSL, 2011). It aimed to evaluate the efficacy of simulation and active recall as a learner-centred pedagogy in facilitating pre-service teachers’ learning about their capacity to self-regulate emotionally and its relevance to the profession. A simulated ‘critical incident’ was used in a lecture to guide students (n=106) to analyse and understand their emotional responses to an altercation between the lecturer and a colleague. The evaluation involved both quantitative and …
