An Algorithm For Quantum Circuit Optimization, Raymond Garwei Wong Mar 2012

An Algorithm For Quantum Circuit Optimization, Raymond Garwei Wong

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In the past 20 years, many researchers shifted their focus to developing computers based on quantum mechanical phenomenon as current computers started to plateau in performance. Some problems such as integer factorization have been shown to perform much more efficiently on a quantum computer than on its classical counterpart. However, quantum computers will continue to remain the object of theoretical research unless it can be physically manifested, and quantum circuit optimization hopes to be a useful aid in turning the theory into a reality. My project looks at a possible approach to solving the issue of circuit optimization by incorporating …

Why Land Tenure Reform Is The Key To Political Stability In Tonga, Kersti Harter Kennedy Mar 2012

Why Land Tenure Reform Is The Key To Political Stability In Tonga, Kersti Harter Kennedy

Washington International Law Journal

The Kingdom of Tonga, a South Pacific country, erupted in violent pro-democracy riots in late 2006 after decades of political unease. Tonga’s people are divided into two main classes: the nobles and the commoners. These two classes have long differed in political and land rights in a hierarchy that is typical of chiefdoms such as Tonga. Tonga’s government has attempted to deal with the sometimes violent, commoner-led pro-democracy movement by amending its Constitution to allow commoners to vote for more of the members of the Legislative Assembly. The resulting government and the noblemen have not, however, shown a commitment to …

Spatiotemporal Studies Of Black Spruce Forest Soils And Implications For The Fate Of C, Jennifer Harden, Kristen L. Manies, Jonathan O'Donnell, Kristofer Johnson, Steve Frolking, Zhaosheng Fan Mar 2012

Spatiotemporal Studies Of Black Spruce Forest Soils And Implications For The Fate Of C, Jennifer Harden, Kristen L. Manies, Jonathan O'Donnell, Kristofer Johnson, Steve Frolking, Zhaosheng Fan

Earth Sciences

Post-fire storage of carbon (C) in organic-soil horizons was measured in one Canadian and three Alaskan chronosequences in black spruce forests, together spanning stand ages of nearly 200 yrs. We used a simple mass balance model to derive estimates of inputs, losses, and accumulation rates of C on timescales of years to centuries. The model performed well for the surface and total organic soil layers and presented questions for resolving the dynamics of deeper organic soils. C accumulation in all study areas is on the order of 20–40 gC/m2/yr for stand ages up to ∼200 yrs. Much …

Cyclin D1 Induces Chromosomal Instability., Mathew C Casimiro, Richard Pestell Mar 2012

Cyclin D1 Induces Chromosomal Instability., Mathew C Casimiro, Richard Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

We developed mouse model systems to investigate the potential for cyclin D1 to induce CIN in vivo. In a mammary gland specific Tet-inducible model the acute expression profile regulated by cyclin D1 after 7 days was enriched in genes that rank highly with CIN. We also used a mammary gland targeted model (MMTV) to continuously express cyclin D1. The mice started to develop mammary gland tumors at 400 days and the tumor-free incidence was 40% in MMTV-cyclin D1. The gene expression profile of the tumors showed enrichment for the CIN signature. We next compared cyclin D1 expression and the highest …

Small Non-Coding Rnas Govern Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis., Zuoren Yu, Richard Pestell Mar 2012

Small Non-Coding Rnas Govern Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis., Zuoren Yu, Richard Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Small non-coding RNAs include siRNA, miRNA, piRNA and snoRNA. The involvement of miRNAs in the regulation of mammary gland tumorigenesis has been widely studied while the role for other small non-coding RNAs remains unclear. Here we summarize the involvement of miRNA in breast cancer onset and progression through regulating the cell cycle and cellular proliferation. The regulation of breast cancer stem cells and tumor regeneration by miRNA is reviewed. In addition, the emerging evidence demonstrating the involvement of piRNA and snoRNA in breast cancer is briefly described.

Middle Income Peers As Educational Resources And The Constitutional Right To Equal Access, Derek W. Black Mar 2012

Middle Income Peers As Educational Resources And The Constitutional Right To Equal Access, Derek W. Black

Faculty Publications

Concentrated poverty in public schools continues to be a leading determinate of the educational opportunities that minority students receive. Since the effective end of mandatory desegregation, advocates have lacked legal tools to address it. As an alternative, some advocates and scholars have attempted to incorporate the concerns of concentrated poverty and racial segregation into educational litigation under state constitutions, but these efforts have been slow to take hold. Thus, all that has remained for students in poor and minority schools is the hope that school finance litigation could direct sufficient resources to mitigate their plight. This Article offers another solution. …

An Analysis Of Factors Expected To Impact Student End-Of-Course Grades In Introductory College Science Classes, Kimberly Shaw, Pinar Gurkas, Zodiac Webster Mar 2012

An Analysis Of Factors Expected To Impact Student End-Of-Course Grades In Introductory College Science Classes, Kimberly Shaw, Pinar Gurkas, Zodiac Webster

Perspectives In Learning

Research shows brain-based learning is achieved best when the students are in an active, low-stress state (Jensen, 2008), and people have unique learning styles that facilitate the assimilation of new knowledge (Gardner, 1983). However, current testing practices hinder the creation of an optimal learning environment, because teachers feel they have to build test-taking skills and spend valuable educational time teaching in ways they believe are not best practices. Changes in the brain can be seen with highly sophisticated imaging technology such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, and positron emission tomography (PET) (Drevets & Raichle, 1998). This imaging technology …

Dynamics Of Surface-Coupled Microcantilevers In Force Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy - Magnetic Vs. Dither Piezo Excitation, Xin Xu, Marisol Koslowski, Arvind Raman Mar 2012

Dynamics Of Surface-Coupled Microcantilevers In Force Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy - Magnetic Vs. Dither Piezo Excitation, Xin Xu, Marisol Koslowski, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

Force modulation atomic force microscopy is widely used for mapping the nanoscale mechanical properties of heterogeneous or composite materials using low frequency excitation of a microcantilever scanning the surface. Here we show that the excitation mode - magnetic or dither piezo, has a major influence on the surface-coupled microcantilever dynamics. Not only is the observed material property contrast inverted between these excitation modes but also the frequency response of the surface-coupled cantilever in the magnetic mode is near-ideal with a clear resonance peak and little phase distortion thus enabling quantitative mapping of the local mechanical properties. Strategies For Success For English As A Second Language (Esl) Students In The Post-Secondary Setting, Tamara Condrey, Sherika Derico Mar 2012

Strategies For Success For English As A Second Language (Esl) Students In The Post-Secondary Setting, Tamara Condrey, Sherika Derico

Perspectives In Learning

English as a Second Language (ESL) students in the college setting have a higher rate of attrition than non-ESL students due, in part, to communication barriers. Retention and graduation rates of these students impact cultural diversity in practice settings for professionals who work with diverse populations. Colleges and universities must seek ways to assist ESL students with communication barriers in order to lower the attrition rate for this segment of the population and, ultimately, to improve the diversity needed in these professions. This article seeks to explore communication barriers for ESL students and offer strategies for overcoming these challenges in …

Paramecium Bursaria Chlorella Virus 1 Encodes A Polyamine Acetyltransferase, Zachary Charlop-Powers, Jean Jakoncic, James R. Gurnon, James L. Van Etten, Ming-Ming Zhou

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: PBCV-1 gene a654l encodes a protein with sequence similarity to GCN5 histone acetyltransferases.

Results: A crystal structure of A654L bound to coenzyme A reveals how A654L acetylates polyamines, not histone lysines.

Conclusion: A654L functions as a polyamine acetyltransferase.

Significance: As the first viral polyamine acetyltransferase, A654L has a possible role in host polyamine catabolism in viral replication.

Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus 1 (PBCV-1), a large DNA virus that infects green algae, encodes a histone H3 lysine 27-specific methyltransferase that functions in global transcriptional silencing of the host. PBCV-1 has another gene a654l that encodes a protein with sequence similarity …

Roe V. Wade Inverted: How The Supreme Court Might Have Privileged Fetal Rights Over Reproductive Freedoms, Jack Wade Nowlin Mar 2012

Roe V. Wade Inverted: How The Supreme Court Might Have Privileged Fetal Rights Over Reproductive Freedoms, Jack Wade Nowlin

Mercer Law Review

In Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court privileged reproductive freedoms over fetal rights, but what if the Court had done the reverse in resolving the question of abortion under the Constitution- elevating fetal rights over reproductive freedoms? How might the Supreme Court have justified such a holding? What arguments, doctrines, and cases would the Court have invoked? What might concurring and dissenting opinions have said in response? A full analysis of these questions requires an exploration of a range of issues: the basis of constitutional personhood, the suspect nature of birth-status classifications, the fundamentality of access to …

Which Science? Whose Science? How Scientific Disciplines Can Shape Environmental Law, Eric Biber Mar 2012

Which Science? Whose Science? How Scientific Disciplines Can Shape Environmental Law, Eric Biber

University of Chicago Law Review

Environmental law fundamentally depends on the production of information by environmental science. However, the inevitable uncertainty in environmental science means that policy will necessarily intertwine with science, allowing for the concealment of value choices and trade-offs by agencies, interest groups, and politicians under a patina of science. Scholars and decision makers have struggled over how to resolve this "science charade. "This Article proposes a new approach to the underlying challenge by closely examining the diversity of scientific disciplines in environmental law. Scientific disciplines each develop their own perspectives that are based in part on values and that shape the information …

Queensborough Community College: Textbook Reserves, Sheila Beck

Publications and Research

This paper examines the textbook reserve collection at Queensborough Community College. Although the collection is heavily used in its current configuration, the library is looking for less labor intensive and less costly alternatives.

The cost of textbooks is skyrocketting. Textbooks are a major, unexpected bill for many students beginning college. Students and their family, used to having their textbooks provided or loaned free of charge at the start of the school year, face often large and unexpected bills when the first term begins. Many times, financial aid does not cover the cost of the books;. Even if it is covered …

Fantasies And Illusions: On Liberty, Order And Free Markets, Bernard E. Harcourt Mar 2012

Fantasies And Illusions: On Liberty, Order And Free Markets, Bernard E. Harcourt

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Critical thinkers have used various terms to describe the collective imaginary that has real effects on individuals, society, and politics. Freud used the term "einer Illusion" to characterize religious belief in his work, The Future of an Illusion, though many others in the psychoanalytic tradition would turn to the notion of fantasy. Marx sometimes used the term illusion and he notoriously deployed the optical illusion and the phantasmagoria in his famous discussion of commodity fetishism. (And Marx, of course, is the father of Ideologiekritic). Foucault at times used the language of fantasy and phantasms, in an early period deployed the …

Responsive Materials Via Diels-Alder Chemistry, Gregory Alan Strange Mar 2012

Responsive Materials Via Diels-Alder Chemistry, Gregory Alan Strange

Master's Theses

The corrosion of infrastructure imposes a significant monetary cost, and at times human cost, upon society. Methods to improve corrosion resistance of materials are described herein which utilize the reversibility of the Diels-Alder reaction to impart thermal responsiveness upon materials. Such stimuli responsiveness can potentially play a role in self healing properties which lead to reduced cracking and thus increased corrosion protection.

Reversible Diels-Alder chemistry was utilized to manipulate the surface energy of glass substrates. Hydrophobic dieneophiles were prepared and attached to glass slides and capillaries to yield a nonwetting surface. Thermal treatment of the surfaces cleaved the Diels-Alder linkage, …

The Notion Of Life In The Work Of Agamben, Carlo Salzani Mar 2012

The Notion Of Life In The Work Of Agamben, Carlo Salzani

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Notion of Life in the Work of Agamben" Carlo Salzani analyzes the notion of "nudity" Giorgio Agamben's understanding of Western culture. Beginning with a reading of the essay "Nudity," in which Agamben proposes an archaeological investigation of the theological apparatus of the concept, Salzani analyzes the pivotal trope in Agamben's Homo Sacer project, "bare" or "naked life," that is, the nudity of life in the grip of sovereign power. Nudity and the nudity of life are construed as a "limit-concept" in a double movement of simultaneous positing and negation or in a positing that grants at …

Faculty Journal Articles

Extraction of natural gas by hydraulic fracturing of the Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, a major gas-bearing unit in the Appalachian Basin, results in significant quantities of produced water containing high total dissolved solids (TDS). We carried out a strontium (Sr) isotope investigation to determine the utility of Sr isotopes in identifying and quantifying the interaction of Marcellus Formation produced waters with other waters in the Appalachian Basin in the event of an accidental release, and to provide information about the source of the dissolved solids. Strontium isotopic ratios of Marcellus produced waters collected over a geographic range of ∼375 km …

Impact Of A Medically Supervised Weight Management Program On Obese And Morbidly Obese Persons, Gemechu Abraham Kurfessa Mar 2012

Impact Of A Medically Supervised Weight Management Program On Obese And Morbidly Obese Persons, Gemechu Abraham Kurfessa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Overweight and obesity represent a major public health problem. While some studies indicate that a clinic-based, healthy-lifestyle program can result in significant weight loss, a systemic review of major commercial weight loss programs concluded that the evidence to support the use of such programs is minimal. While few argue for the need for weight loss in obese individuals it is important to identify factors associated with successful weight loss. These factors could include financial incentives, frequency of intervention sessions, use of adjunctive weight loss medications and supplemental diet products, and availability of group vs. individual therapy sessions. In addition, …

Teaching Environmental Ethics To Mba Students, Raymond Benton Jr. Mar 2012

Teaching Environmental Ethics To Mba Students, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay explains the author's approach to teaching environmental ethics in the graduate school of business. The approach is based on a religious rather than a philosophical perspective, taking its light not from theology or religious studies but from anthropology. The author discusses the origins of the course, then explains the anthropological model of religion as a cultural system and briefly applies that model to economics, focusing on the worldview that undergirds it. The course then shifts to how others understand the world in which they live, introduces Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac, and ends by speculating on what …
