10 Cenozoic Climatic Record For Monsoonal Rainfall Over The Indian Region, Mohan Kuppusamy, Prosenjit Ghosh

Modern Climatology

Atmospheric carbon dioxide level is one of the major drivers responsible for the global temperature change (Lacis et al., 2010). The role of carbon dioxide as an important greenhouse gas, and its contribution towards regulation of global surface temperature has been recognized for over a century (Arrhenius, 1896; Chamberlin, 1899; Royer, 2006). The ice core records along with other proxy based records provides an evidence signifying a strong coupling between CO2 and global temperature for at least the last ~65 m.y. (million years) (Petit et al., 1999; Siegenthaler et al., 2005, Zachos et al., 2001). The intensification of convective hydrological …

Modern Climatology

Climatology, the study of climate, is no longer regarded as a single discipline that treats climate as something that fluctuates only within the unchanging boundaries described by historical statistics. The field has recognized that climate is something that changes continually under the influence of physical and biological forces and so, cannot be understood in isolation but rather, is one that includes diverse scientific disciplines that play their role in understanding a highly complex coupled “whole system” that is the Earth’s climate. The modern era of climatology is echoed in this book. On the one hand it offers a broad synoptic …

Formative Assessment In The Christian Classroom, Kevin Schenk Mar 2012

Formative Assessment In The Christian Classroom, Kevin Schenk

Master of Education Program Theses

When student learning is defined solely by the results of a summative test, the nature of the student is devalued and the process of learning is minimized. Currently, the educational quality of schools is often judged by performance on standardized tests. This has put strain on teachers to measure up to government-set standards and has left students struggling to perform on high-pressure tests. An alternative to such testing exists in formative assessment. When one looks closely at formative assessment and its use within a Christian classroom, one begins to see the value this method of assessment has: individualized attention is …

Postdispersal Seed Predation Limits The Abundance Of A Long-Lived Perennial Forb (Lithospermum Ruderale), Mary Carolyn Bricker, John L. Maron Mar 2012

Postdispersal Seed Predation Limits The Abundance Of A Long-Lived Perennial Forb (Lithospermum Ruderale), Mary Carolyn Bricker, John L. Maron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Loss of seeds to consumers is common in plant communities, but the degree to which these losses influence plant abundance or population growth is often unclear. This is particularly the case for postdispersal seed predation by rodents, as most studies of rodent seed predation have focused on the sources of spatiotemporal variation in seed loss but not quantified the population consequences of this loss. In previous work we showed that seed predation by deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) substantially reduced seedling recruitment and establishment of Lithospermum ruderale (Boraginaceae), a long-lived perennial forb. To shed light on how rodent seed …

Microarray Analysis As A Strategy To Identify And Characterize Glycome Regulatory, John F. Rakus Mar 2012

Microarray Analysis As A Strategy To Identify And Characterize Glycome Regulatory, John F. Rakus

Chemistry Faculty Research

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

Dna Damage Signals Through Differentially Modified E2f1 Molecules To Induce Apoptosis, Jasmyne Carnevale, Oliva Palander, Laurie A. Seifried, Frederick A. Dick

Paediatrics Publications

E2F transcription can lead to cell proliferation or apoptosis, indicating that E2Fs control opposing functions. In a similar manner, DNA double-strand breaks can signal to induce cell cycle arrest or apoptosis. Specifically, pRB is activated following DNA damage, allowing it to bind to E2Fs and block transcription at cell cycle promoters; however, E2F1 is simultaneously activated, leading to transcription at proapoptotic promoters. We examined this paradoxical control of E2F transcription by studying how E2F1's interaction with pRB is regulated following DNA damage. Our work reveals that DNA damage signals create multiple forms of E2F1 that contain mutually exclusive posttranslational modifications. …

Species-Specific Relationship Between Transpiration And Cadmium Translocation In Lettuce, Barley And Radish, Mst. Fardausi Akhter, Sheila Macfie

Biology Publications

Cadmium (Cd) may accumulate in plants to levels that are of concern in human diets. Our ability to predict the accumulation of Cd in plants is restricted by our poor understanding of the physiological processes that control Cd accumulation and translocation. A hydroponic experiment was carried out to test the hypothesis that the amount of Cd taken up and translocated to aboveground tissues is proportional to the volume of water transpired in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L.). Transpiration was measured as mass of water lost. Increased transpiration caused increased accumulation of Cd …

Conformational Melding Permits A Conserved Binding Geometry In Tcr Recognition Of Foreign And Self Molecular Mimics, Oleg Y. Borbulevych, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker

Food for Health: Publications

Molecular mimicry between foreign and self antigens is a mechanism of T cell receptor cross reactivity and is thought to contribute to the development of autoimmunity. The αβ TCR A6 recognizes the foreign antigen Tax from the virus HTLV-1 when presented by the class I MHC HLA-A2. In a possible link with the autoimmune disease HAM/TSP, A6 also recognizes a self peptide from the neuronal protein HuD in the context of HLA-A2. We found here that the complexes of the HuD and Tax epitopes with HLA-A2 are close but imperfect structural mimics, and that in contrast with other recent structures …

Multi-Decadal Drought Cycles In The Great Basin Recorded By The Great Salt Lake: Modulation From A Transition-Phase Teleconnection, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert R. Gillies, Thomas Reichler

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

This study investigates the meteorological conditions associated with multidecadal drought cycles as revealed by lake level fluctuation of the Great Salt Lake (GSL). The analysis combined instrumental, proxy, and simulation datasets, including the Twentieth Century Reanalysis version 2, the North American Drought Atlas, and a 2000-yr control simulation of the GFDL Coupled Model, version 2.1 (CM2.1). Statistical evidence from the spectral coherence analysis points to a phase shift amounting to 6–9 yr between the wet–dry cycles in the Great Basin and the warm–cool phases of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO). Diagnoses of the sea surface temperature and atmospheric …

Antifungal Activity Of Lactobacillus Against Microsporum Canis, Microsporum Gypseum And Epidermophyton Floccosum, Jiahui Guo, Brid Brosnan, Ambrose Furey, Elke K. Arendt, Padraigin Murphy

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

A total of 220 lactic acid bacteria isolates were screened for antifungal activity using Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger as the target strains. Four Lactobacillus strains exhibited strong inhibitory activity on agar surfaces. All four were also identified as having strong inhibitory activity against the human pathogenic fungi Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum and Epidermophyton floccosum. One of the four lactobacilli, namely Lb. reuteri ee1p exhibited the most inhibition against dermatophytes. Cell-free culture supernatants of Lb. reuteri ee1p and of the non-antifungal Lb. reuteri M13 were freeze-dried and used to access and compare antifungal activity in agar plate assays …

Proteins: Form And Function, Roy D. Sleator Mar 2012

Proteins: Form And Function, Roy D. Sleator

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

An overwhelming array of structural variants has evolved from a comparatively small number of protein structural domains; which has in turn facilitated an expanse of functional derivatives. Herein, I review the primary mechanisms which have contributed to the vastness of our existing, and expanding, protein repertoires. Protein function prediction strategies, both sequence and structure based, are also discussed and their associated strengths and weaknesses assessed.

Coral Recruitment To Two Vessel Grounding Sites Off Southeast Florida, Usa, Alison L. Moulding, Vladimir N. Kosmynin, David S. Gilliam

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Over the last two decades, more than 10 major vessel groundings have occurred on coral reefs offshore southeast Florida. Lack of any published information on coral settlement, post-settlement survival, and juvenile coral growth in the southeast Florida region inhibits efforts to determine if coral populations will be able to effectively re-establish themselves. The goal of this study was to examine these processes to obtain background data needed to determine the potential for natural recovery. Over a three year period annual coral recruitment, juvenile growth, and mortality rates were measured in 20 permanent quadrats at each of two ship grounding and …

Does Secondary Inflammatory Breast Cancer Represent Post-Surgical Metastatic Disease?, Salman Hashmi, Ladan Zolfaghari, Paul H. Levine

Epidemiology Faculty Publications

The phenomenon of accelerated tumor growth following surgery has been observed repeatedly and merits further study. Inflammatory breast carcinoma (IBC) is widely recognized as an extremely aggressive malignancy characterized by micrometastasis at the time of diagnosis, with one interesting subgroup defined as secondary IBC where pathologically identifiable IBC appears after surgical treatment of a primary non-inflammatory breast cancer. One possible mechanism can be related to the stimulation of dormant micrometastasis through local angiogenesis occurring as part of posttraumatic healing. In this report, we review cases of secondary IBC and others where localized trauma was followed by the appearance of IBC …

Photochemistry Of Monochloro Complexes Of Copper(Ii) In Methanol Probed By Ultrafast Transient Absorption Spectroscopy, Andrey S. Mereshchenko, Suman K. Pal, Kanykey E. Karabaeva, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Alexander N. Tarnovsky Mar 2012

Photochemistry Of Monochloro Complexes Of Copper(Ii) In Methanol Probed By Ultrafast Transient Absorption Spectroscopy, Andrey S. Mereshchenko, Suman K. Pal, Kanykey E. Karabaeva, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Alexander N. Tarnovsky

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Ultrafast transient absorption spectra in the deep to near UV range (212-384 nm) were measured for the [Cu-II(MeOH)(5)Cl](+) complexes in methanol following 255-nm excitation of the complex into the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer excited state. The electronically excited complex undergoes sub-200 fs radiationless decay, predominantly via back electron transfer, to the hot electronic ground state followed by fast vibrational relaxation on a 0.4-4 Ps time scale. A minor photochemical channel is Cu-Cl bond dissociation, leading to the reduction of copper(H) to copper(I) and the formation of MeOH center dot Cl charge-transfer complexes. The depletion of ground-state [Cu-II(MeOH)(5)Cl](+) perturbs the equilibrium between several …
