Power By Possession: Cuban-American Types And Collecting In The Agüero Sisters, Ashley Noelle Walton
Power By Possession: Cuban-American Types And Collecting In The Agüero Sisters, Ashley Noelle Walton
Theses and Dissertations
Although many other ethnic and cultural studies have moved beyond essentialist labels and categories, Cuban-American studies persists in categorizing the people belonging to the cultural group in terms of how much time they have spent in Cuba, thus creating a hierarchy of "authentic" Cuban-ness. Isabel Alvarez Borland gives a comprehensive overview of Cuban-American literary categories, and through her description we can see how these categories may lend themselves to stratification. These categories include: the first generation, the second generation, the one-and-a-halfer, and the ethnic writer. To say that one generation of Cuban exiles is more or less authentically Cuban discounts …

Moving Forward Together: The Lgbt Community And The Family Mediation Field , Mark J. Hanson
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
This is a time of great change for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender ("LGBT") community. Members of the LGBT community have gained increased awareness and rights. The United States Supreme Court found state sodomy laws that ban same-sex sexual activity unconstitutional. Thirty-three states have enacted hate crime legislation that protects members of the LGBT community. Recently from the streets of San Francisco, to New Platz, New York and to Sandoval County, New Mexico, LGBT couples have received marriage licenses despite being prohibited by state law. Other states, such as Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont have enacted legislation giving LGBT couples …

Favorable Team Scores Under The Team-Based Learning Paradigm: A Statistical Artifact?, Trevor Hefley, Andrew J. Tyre
Favorable Team Scores Under The Team-Based Learning Paradigm: A Statistical Artifact?, Trevor Hefley, Andrew J. Tyre
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Team-based learning (TBL) is a highly structured method of active small group learning and consists of identical tests taken individually and in groups. We reviewed literature to determine the scoring methods used for individual and group testing. Twenty-eight percent of the studies used multiple choice formats for the individual test and formats that allow for immediate feedback and corrective scoring for the group test. We calculated the expected value of both individual and group tests and found that by default groups will score higher than individuals, even if there is no actual difference in performance. We urge TBL practitioners to …

Supporting Children, Balancing Lives, Katharine K. Baker
Pepperdine Law Review
This paper examines how U.S. child support policy validates traditional divisions of labor and thereby hinders individual attempts to achieve an acceptable work/family balance. It argues that by using the household as the relevant unit of measurement for child support purposes, family law doctrine legitimates the specialization contracts that arise within households. These specialization contracts, used most extensively in wealthy, elite households, undermine attempts to distribute caretaking and provider roles more equally between parents. The article suggest that by dispensing with the household as the relevant unit of measurement and treating all parents individually, each with a responsibility to caretake …
Keeping Discrimination Theory Front And Center In The Discourse Over Work And Family Conflict, Laura T. Kessler
Keeping Discrimination Theory Front And Center In The Discourse Over Work And Family Conflict, Laura T. Kessler
Pepperdine Law Review
This essay is a contribution to a symposium on balancing career and family. It frames the problem of work/family conflict as a form of sex discrimination. It demonstrates that many of the constructs commonly used to illustrate an absence of employment discrimination - such as the accident, opt-out, time-lag theories - actually fit quite comfortably within various discrimination frameworks. It also contextualizes the problem of work/family conflict within the larger issue of gender bias in the workplace, demonstrating how each contributes to and works together to produce workplace inequality for women. This approach contrasts with the traditional bifurcation of gender …

Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) and Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC) have established the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Program since Fall-2007 academic year. The program was initially jointly funded by the MESA California Consortium and after the first year operation, completely funded by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The MESA model was established to assist in increasing the retention of educationally disadvantaged students (minorities, female, low-income, first generation college students) majoring in STEM areas and helping them transfer to four-year institutions in Georgia and across the nation. This presentation describes the components of the MESA …

Astroglial Nf-Κb: A Critical Pathway In Retinal Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, David J. Barakat
Open Access Dissertations
Astrocytes are a critical cell type of the retina which support ganglion cell axons and maintain the blood retinal barrier. Upon ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury, astrocytes undergo rapid activation, which has been characterized by hypertrophy, proliferation and global changes in gene expression. The failure of these cells to support neurons after ischemia is thought to promote secondary injury response and retinal ganglion cell apoptosis. Therefore, promoting survival and proper function of astrocytes is critical for protecting the inner retina to ischemic injury. The activation of astrocytes and changes in gene expression in retinal IR injury has been linked to the …

Connections Between Sphingosine Kinase And Phospholipase D In The Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Liang Guo, Girish Mishra, Jennifer E. Markham, Maoyin Li, Amanda Tawfall, Ruth Welti

Phosphatidic acid (PA) and phytosphingosine 1-phosphate (phyto-S1P) both are lipid messengers involved in plant response to abscisic acid (ABA). Our previous data indicate that PA binds to sphingosine kinase (SPHK) and increases its phyto-S1P-producing activity. To understand the cellular and physiological functions of the PA-SPHK interaction, we isolated Arabidopsis thaliana SPHK mutants sphk1-1 and sphk2-1 and characterized them, together with phospholipase Dα1 knock-out, pldα1, in plant response to ABA. Compared with wild-type (WT) plants, the SPHK mutants and pldα1 all displayed decreased sensitivity to ABA-promoted stomatal closure. Phyto-S1P promoted stomatal closure in sphk1-1 and sphk2-1, but not in pldα1, whereas …

Predicting Filipino Mothers' And Fathers' Reported Use Of Corporal Punishment From Education, Authoritarian Attitudes, And Endorsement Of Corporal Punishment, Rosanne M. Jocson, Liane Peña Alampay, Jennifer E. Lansford
Psychology Department Faculty Publications
The relations of education, authoritarian childrearing attitudes, and endorsement of corporal punishment to Filipino parents' reported use of corporal punishment were examined using two waves of data. Structured interviews using self-report questionnaires were conducted with 117 mothers and 98 fathers from 120 families when their children were 8 years old, and when their children were 9 years old. Path analyses showed that, among mothers, higher education predicted lower authoritarian attitudes, which in turn predicted lower reports of corporal punishment use. Among fathers, higher education predicted lower endorsement of corporal punishment, which in turn predicted lower reports of its use. Results …

At Second Glance: Retroactive Continuity In Junot Díaz’S The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Stephen Clancy Clawson
At Second Glance: Retroactive Continuity In Junot Díaz’S The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Stephen Clancy Clawson
Theses and Dissertations
This work explores Junot Díaz’s incorporation of nerd culture into his novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and that move's larger impact on the genre of trauma narratives. By using allusions to nerd texts such as The Lord of the Rings to structure his depiction of the brutal reign of Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina, Díaz effectively rewrites Dominican history, creating a retroactive continuity of fantasy. Retroactive continuity, or retcon, is a little-discussed interpretive strategy of the nerd community with striking parallels to Lacanian notions of fantasy. A reading of Díaz's retcon ultimately casts doubt on …
