Endurance Training Induces Depot-Specific Changes In Il-10/Tnf-Α Ratio In Rat Adipose Tissue, Fábio Santos Lira, José Cesar Rosa, Alex Shimura Yamashita, Cristiane Harume Koyama

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

White adipose tissue (WAT) is the source of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and recently, it recognized as an important source of interleukin 10 production (IL-10). Acute physical exercise induce an anti-inflammatory cytokine profile. However, the effect of chronic physical exercise in the production of IL-10 by the WAT has never been examined. IL-10 and TNF-α were assessed in WAT of rats engaged in endurance training. Animals were randomly assigned to either a sedentary control group (S, n=7) or an endurance trained group (T, n=8). Trained rats ran on a treadmill for 5 days/wk for 8 wk at 55-65% of the …

Effect Of Eleven Weeks Training Program On Inflammatory, Hematological And Biochemical Parameters In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Liver And Serum, Fernando Oliveira Catanho Da Silva, Rejane Lucco, Rodrigo Ferraresso, Danilo Lopes Ferrucci

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Physical exercise is known causer of acute traumas in biological structures. Chronically, physical training or can lead to a coherent sequence of traumas leading to Adaptation (Functional Overreaching – FOR) or to an imbalance between stimulus and recovery leading to Overtraining Syndrome (OTS). In the present study we analyzed muscle and hepatic cytokines concentration: Interleukin-6 (IL6), Tumor Necrose Factor-Alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin-1Beta (IL1-β) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10); muscle and serum concentration of glutamate (GLU) and glutamine (GLN); serum concentration of C-reactive Protein (CRP), Alpha-1 Glicoprotein Acid (AGA), Albumin (ALB), Uric Acid (UA), Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP), Creatine Kinase (CK), Red …

Effect Of An Endurance Training-Overtraining Protocol On Rat Muscular Oxidative Capacity, Rodrigo Luiz Perroni Ferraresso, Denise Vaz De Macedo, Rodrigo Hohl

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Overtraining may outcomes for functional overreaching (FOR), a short term decline in performance that leads eventually to an improvement in performance after recovery, or nonfunctional overreaching (NFOR) when performance decline may be reversed only by a longer regenerative period. Recently we developed a training-overtraining protocol for rats with increased workload: eight weeks of daily exercise sessions, followed by three weeks of increasing daily training frequency (2, 3 and 4 times) with decreasing recovery time between sessions (4, 3 and 2h), characterized by analyses of performance before training (T1) and after the 4th(T2), 8th(T3), 9th(T4), 10th(T5) and 11th(T6) training weeks. Comparison Of The Effects Of Different Anesthetics On Serum Haemolysis And Glycogenolysis In Rats, Eduarda F. A. Machado, Ana Carolina R. Normand, Lázaro A. S. Nunes, Denise V. Macedo

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The anesthetics can differently affect the structure and biological function of tissues and systems. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of three injectable anesthetics generally used in experiments with animals on the degree of haemolysis and glycogenolysis after deep anesthesia. 20 Wistar male rats (330-440g) were used. The animals were divided into three groups: Cloral Hydrate (CH), Ketamine + Xylazine (KX), Zoletil 50® (zolazepam and tiletamina) + Xylazine (ZTX). After deep anesthesia the total blood was collected. Immediately the liver, the white and red gastrocnemius muscles were also withdrawn. The degree of serum haemolysis was quantified …

Visual Attention, Color Processing And Physiological Measure Differences In Males And Females With Substance Abuse And Opiate Addiction, Jo Ann Petrie Mar 2012

Visual Attention, Color Processing And Physiological Measure Differences In Males And Females With Substance Abuse And Opiate Addiction, Jo Ann Petrie

Theses and Dissertations

A biological marker of the addictive state would be a major breakthrough in objectively assessing the efficacy of treatment outcomes. Given its role in the mesolimbic system and drug reward, most biological marker studies for addiction focus on measures related to dopamine (DA). Dopamine is also implicated in some disorders of visual attention and plays a modulatory role in the processing of color in the retinal DA pathway. For example, visual processing in the retina has been shown to co-vary with DA levels during cocaine withdrawal. In this electroencephalographic (EEG) study, we studied event related potentials (ERPs) and reaction time …

Reproductive Ecology And Severe Pollen Limitation In The Polychromic Tundra Plant, Parrya Nudicaulis (Brassicaceae), Justin R. Fulkerson, Justen B. Whittall, Matthew L. Carlson Mar 2012

Reproductive Ecology And Severe Pollen Limitation In The Polychromic Tundra Plant, Parrya Nudicaulis (Brassicaceae), Justin R. Fulkerson, Justen B. Whittall, Matthew L. Carlson

Biology

Pollen limitation is predicted to be particularly severe in tundra habitats. Numerous reproductive patterns associated with alpine and arctic species, particularly mechanisms associated with reproductive assurance, are suggested to be driven by high levels of pollen limitation. We studied the reproductive ecology of Parrya nudicaulis, a species with relatively large sexual reproductive investment and a wide range of floral pigmentation, in tundra habitats in interior montane Alaska to estimate the degree of pollen limitation. The plants are self-compatible and strongly protandrous, setting almost no seed in the absence of pollinators. Supplemental hand pollinations within pollinator exclusion cages indicated no cage …

Faculty Publications

Motivated by a need to classify high-dimensional, heterogeneous data from the bioinformatics domain, we developed ML-Flex, a machine-learning toolbox that enables users to perform two-class and multi-class classification analyses in a systematic yet flexible manner. ML-Flex was written in Java but is capable of interfacing with third-party packages written in other programming languages. It can handle multiple input-data formats and supports a variety of customizations. MLFlex provides implementations of various validation strategies, which can be executed in parallel across multiple computing cores, processors, and nodes. Additionally, ML-Flex supports aggregating evidence across multiple algorithms and data sets via ensemble learning. This …

Increase In Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis Does Not Prevent Muscle Loss But Increased Tumor Size In A Mouse Model Of Acute Cancer-Induced Cachexia., Xiao Wang, Alicia M Pickrell, Teresa A Zimmers, Carlos T Moraes

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Cancer-associated cachexia is a complex metabolic condition characterized by the progressive loss of body fat and deterioration of muscle mass. Although the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cachexia are incompletely understood, previous studies have suggested mitochondrial dysfunction in murine models of cancer cachexia. To better understand the metabolic shift in cancer-induced cachexia, we studied the effects of enhanced oxidative capacity on muscle wasting using transgenic mice over-expressing Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma Co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) in skeletal muscle in a Lewis lung carcinoma-implanted model. Increased mitochondrial biogenesis was observed in the skeletal muscle of tumor-implanted mice. However, these increases did not prevent …

Pf19 Encodes The P60 Catalytic Subunit Of Katanin And Is Required For Assembly Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus In Chlamydomonas, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith Mar 2012

Pf19 Encodes The P60 Catalytic Subunit Of Katanin And Is Required For Assembly Of The Flagellar Central Apparatus In Chlamydomonas, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

For all eukaryotic cilia the basal bodies provide a template for the assembly of the doublet microtubules, and intraflagellar transport provides a mechanism for transport of axonemal components into the growing cilium. What is not known is how the central pair of microtubules is nucleated or how their associated polypeptides are assembled. Here we report that the Chlamydomonas pf19 mutation results in a single amino acid change within the p60 catalytic subunit of katanin, and that this mutation prevents microtubule severing activity. The pf19 mutant has paralyzed flagella that lack the central apparatus. Using a combination of mutant analysis, RNAi-mediated …

Drug Delivery Strategies Using Light Sensitive Molecules, Martin Dcona Mar 2012

Drug Delivery Strategies Using Light Sensitive Molecules, Martin Dcona

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer remains one of the most dreaded diseases due to inevitable suffering and possible fatality. Only cardiac disease has caused more deaths than cancer. Present day cancer treatment involves radiation, surgery or chemotherapy. In chemotherapy, an anti-tumoral drug is used to treat the tumor either by killing or stalling the growth of the tumor cells. In certain types of cancer, for e.g. metastatic breast cancer, the first line of therapy is often chemotherapy. But the inability of current clinically approved drugs to selectively target tumor cells, ultimately results in side effects. To reduce these side effects, prodrug therapies have been …

The Process Of Creation: A Novel Methodology For Analyzing Multimodal Data, Erica Rosenfeld Halverson, Michelle Bass, David Woods Mar 2012

The Process Of Creation: A Novel Methodology For Analyzing Multimodal Data, Erica Rosenfeld Halverson, Michelle Bass, David Woods

The Qualitative Report

In the 21st century, meaning making is a multimodal act; we communicate what we know and how we know it using much more than printed text on a blank page. As a result, qualitative researchers need new methodologies, methods, and tools for working with the complex artifacts that our research subjects produce. In this article we describe the co-development of an analytic methodology and a tool for working with youth produced films as multimodal artifacts of youth engagement with identity. Specifically, we describe how to employ this multimodal framework in data analysis, with an emphasis on how different modes interact …

Democracy And Social Justice In Sarajevo’S Schools, Peter Mcdermott, Brian Kirby Lanahan

The Qualitative Report

After the end of the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, the people of Sarajevo found themselves rebuilding their country while also learning to live with their former enemies in this developing democracy. In this study we examined the extent to which democratic practices and social justice values were being taught in Sarajevo’s schools. Using a case study method, we gathered data gathered from interviews with educators in a variety of roles in Sarajevo, observations of elementary and secondary classroom teaching, and daily reflective journal entries about living and teaching in the city during the fall of 2008. Our data analyses revealed that …

Evolution has provided a number of animal species with extraordinary phenotypes. Several of these phenotypes allow species to survive and thrive in environmental conditions that mimic disease states in humans. The study of evolved mechanisms that responsible for these phenotypes may provide insights into the basis of human disease and guide the design of new therapeutic approaches. Examples include species that tolerate acute or chronic hypoxemia like deep-diving mammals and high-altitude inhabitants, as well as those that hibernate and interrupt their development when exposed to adverse environments. The evolved traits exhibited by these animal species involve modifications of common biological …
