Sumoylation Is Tumor-Suppressive And Confers Proliferative Quiescence To Hematopoietic Progenitors In Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Marta E. Kalamarz, Indira Paddibhatla, Christina Nadar, Shubha Govind Mar 2012

Sumoylation Is Tumor-Suppressive And Confers Proliferative Quiescence To Hematopoietic Progenitors In Drosophila Melanogaster Larvae, Marta E. Kalamarz, Indira Paddibhatla, Christina Nadar, Shubha Govind

Publications and Research

Summary How cell-intrinsic regulation of the cell cycle and the extrinsic influence of the niche converge to provide proliferative quiescence, safeguard tissue integrity, and provide avenues to stop stem cells from giving rise to tumors is a major challenge in gene therapy and tissue engineering. We explore this question in sumoylation-deficient mutants of Drosophila. In wild type third instar larval lymph glands, a group of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells acquires quiescence; a multicellular niche supports their undifferentiated state. However, how proliferative quiescence is instilled in this population is not understood. We show that Ubc9 protein is nuclear in this population. Loss …

Chemical Modification Of Polysaccharides Using Reactive Extrusion, Pratik Bhandari Mar 2012

Chemical Modification Of Polysaccharides Using Reactive Extrusion, Pratik Bhandari

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The objective of this dissertation was to study the use of reactive extrusion for the chemical modifications of starch and cellulose. A carboxymethyl derivative of starch and carboxymethyl and acetate derivatives of cellulose were prepared using reactive extrusion.

Carboxymethyl starch with rapid swelling properties in water was prepared using reactive extrusion. This was achieved by controlling the gelatinization and through the use of NaOH by controlling the water/ethanol ratio. The effects of NaOH, H2O, temperature, ethanol, sodium mono chloro acetate, sodium tripolyphosphate, citric acid, epichlorohydrin and extruder screw configuration on the degree of substitution of carboxymethyl starch were …

Respite Care And Marital Quality: Families With A Child Diagnosed With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amber Rachelle Harper Mar 2012

Respite Care And Marital Quality: Families With A Child Diagnosed With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amber Rachelle Harper

Theses and Dissertations

Parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at greater risk than other couples for having higher stress levels and lower marital quality. Respite care has been suggested as a way to help alleviate stress. This study investigated the relationship between respite care and marital quality; and the potential of mother stress and father stress as mediating variables. One hundred and one couples, each consisting of a mother and a father who lived with their child with an ASD, were given questionnaires including a respite questionnaire, Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Experience in Close Relationships Questionnaire, and …

Fatty acid synthase (FASN) and ATP-citrate lyase, key enzymes of de novo lipogenesis, are significantly upregulated and activated in many cancers and portend poor prognosis. Even though the role of lipogenesis in providing proliferative and survival advantages to cancer cells has been described, the impact of aberrant activation of lipogenic enzymes on cancer progression remains unknown. In this study, we found that elevated expression of FASN is associated with advanced stages of colorectal cancer (CRC) and liver metastasis, suggesting that it may play a role in progression of CRC to metastatic disease. Targeted inhibition of lipogenic enzymes abolished expression of …

Using Equivalence-Based Instruction To Increase Efficiency In Teaching Neuroanatomy, Carolyn L. Pytte, Daniel M. Fienup Mar 2012

Using Equivalence-Based Instruction To Increase Efficiency In Teaching Neuroanatomy, Carolyn L. Pytte, Daniel M. Fienup

Publications and Research

A goal of all instruction is to efficiently allocate time spent teaching -- balancing redundancy that enhances learning with redundancy that is irrelevant to increasing student understanding. Efficient allocation of time allows the instructor to present additional material and go into more detail about the information being presented. Here we borrow laboratory research on concept formation and apply these formal principles in teaching introductory neuroanatomy within a lecture course on Behavioral Neuroscience. Concept formation is taught by pairing multiple stimuli, for instance brain name, location, and function, in such a way that novel associations within a category emerge without direct …

Hierarchical Rank Aggregation With Applications To Nanotoxicology, Trina Patel, Donatello Telesca, Robert Rallo, Saji George, Xia Tian, Nel Andre

COBRA Preprint Series

The development of high throughput screening (HTS) assays in the field of nanotoxicology provide new opportunities for the hazard assessment and ranking of engineered nanomaterials (ENM). It is often necessary to rank lists of materials based on multiple risk assessment parameters, often aggregated across several measures of toxicity and possibly spanning an array of experimental platforms. Bayesian models coupled with the optimization of loss functions have been shown to provide an effective framework for conducting inference on ranks. In this article we present various loss function based ranking approaches for comparing ENM within experiments and toxicity parameters. Additionally, we propose …

Education Education Legislation, Georgia State University Law Review

Georgia State University Law Review

While all of these bills are related to education, they cannot be said to constitute a legislative package. HB 589 transfers authority for teacher certification from the Department of Education to a newly constituted Professional Standards Commission. SB 328 reduces the number of standardized tests public school students must take. SB 71 reduces the number of reports which high-achieving schools must file. SB 313 establishes penalties for providing or obtaining a fraudulent academic document. SB 348 allows a child who is a resident of a state facility for the mentally retarded to receive free public instruction. SB 396 provides that …

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig Mar 2012

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Over the last generation, state governments have undertaken a major disinvestment in higher education. The questions raised by these funding reductions go beyond matters of crowded classrooms, dilapidated facilities, and altered pedagogies to challenge the basic function of college and university education in the United States. Will higher education continue to be the gateway to equality and provider of broad horizons for citizens, or will it be transformed into a bulwark of social privilege and narrow conveyor of vocational skills for private consumers? These are the ultimate questions posed by the funding priorities of the state legislatures in America today.

Technology’S Impact On Student – Faculty Interaction: Issues For Collective Bargaining, Mark Piwinsky, Mary Beth Leidman, Mathew Mckeague

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Today’s faculty confront challenges that are reshaping their workload and creating new demands and expectations. A decline in the proportion of tenured faculty and an increased reliance on temporary faculty is problematic in a time of strong enrollment growth. The American Association of University Professors (Trends in Faculty Status, 2007) reports the proportion of full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty has declined from 56.8% in fall 1975 to 31.2% in fall 2007. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (2005, 2008) show enrollments increased from 17.92 million in fall 2005 to 19.57 million in fall 2008. Schaffhauser (2010) reports that …
