Development Of An Integrated Process Model For Algae Growth In A Photobioreactor, Mehregan Jalalizadeh
Development Of An Integrated Process Model For Algae Growth In A Photobioreactor, Mehregan Jalalizadeh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While understanding the kinetics of algae growth plays an important role in improving algae cultivation technology, none of the existing kinetic models are able to describe algae growth when more than three growth limiting factors are involved. A model was developed in this study to describe algae growth in a photobioreactor. Two expressions were proposed based on the Monod model to relate the specific growth rate of algae to the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, inorganic carbon and light intensity in the culture media. Algal biomass concentration as a function of time was calculated by solving mass and energy balances around …

Evidence For Viral Infection In The Copepods Labidocera Aestiva And Acartia Tonsa In Tampa Bay, Florida, Darren Stephenson Dunlap
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mesozooplankton are of critical importance to marine food webs by transferring energy from the microbial food web to higher trophic levels and depositing energy to the deeper ocean layers through fecal deposition. While decades of research have shown that viruses have significant impacts in the oceans, and infect a wide range of organisms from bacteria to whales, there is still little known about the impacts of viruses on the mesozooplankton community. As copepods are the most abundant mesozooplankton group, this study sought to characterize the viruses present in natural populations of the calanoid copepods Acartia tonsa and Labidocera aestiva in …

My Identity, Kris Cho
My Identity, Kris Cho
Theses and Dissertations
My identity is the dominate theme in my works. As a Korean American, I am influenced by life experiences in both countries. These two vastly different cultures and experiences define me as an individual. I use references and symbolism from both cultures as elements in my painting, mixed media, and crafts. I have spent half of my life in Korea, my mother country, and the other half in America, my new homeland. Living as an American, my artworks keep me connected to my Korean roots. Creating artwork is my way to relay who I really am as a Korean American.
Open Source Innovation, Patent Injunctions, And The Public Interest, James Boyle
Open Source Innovation, Patent Injunctions, And The Public Interest, James Boyle
Duke Law & Technology Review
This Article explores the difficulties that high technology markets pose for patent law and, in particular, for patent injunctions. It then outlines the ways in which “open source innovation” is unusually vulnerable to patent injunctions. It argues that courts can recognize this vulnerability, and respond to the particular competitive and innovative benefits of open source innovation, by flexibly applying the Supreme Court’s ruling in eBay v. MercExchange. Having dealt with the lamentable failure of the International Trade Commission to exercise a similar flexibility in its own patent jurisprudence, despite statutory and constitutional provisions that counsel otherwise, the Article concludes with …

The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Dengue fever is a mosquito-transmitted disease that is endemic in many parts of the tropical world and affects a significant proportion of the human population. Temperature is known to influence aspects of the dengue transmission cycle, which has consequences for disease dynamics. Previous work has explored the effects of temperature on the mortality rate of the mosquito and the resulting population change. However, there is substantial evidence that the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of the pathogen within the vector host, Aedes aegypti, is also temperature dependent. This dependence has not been thoroughly researched. We present a single serotype compartmental model …

Planarians are traditional animal models in developmental and regeneration biology. Recently, these organisms are arising as vertebrate-relevant animal models in neuropharmacology. Using an adaptation of published behavioral protocols, we have described the alleviation of cocaine-induced planarian seizure-like movements (pSLM) by a naturally-occurring sesquiterpene lactone, parthenolide. Interestingly, parthenolide does not prevent the expression of pSLM induced by amphetamines; in vertebrates, amphetamines interact with the same protein target as cocaine. Parthenolide is also unable to prevent pSLM elicited by the cholinergic compounds nicotine and cytisine or by the glutamatergic agents L- or D- glutamic acid or NMDA. Thus, we conclude that parthenolide …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) is a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose, which is a central reaction in galactofuranose biosynthesis. Galactofuranose has never been found in humans but is an essential building block of the cell wall and extracellular matrix of many bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. The importance of UGM for the viability of many pathogens and its absence in humans make UGMa potential drug target. Here we report the first crystal structures and small-angle x-ray scattering data for UGM from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, the causative agent of aspergillosis. The structures reveal that Aspergillus UGM has several …

The Phylogeography Of The Mountain Sucker [Catostomus (Pantosteus) Platyrhynchus], Nina Johanna Laitnen
Theses and Dissertations
Pantosteus, a subgenus of Catostomus, includes the mountain sucker (Catostomus playthyrnchus), whose speculated older origins in the Miocene/Pliocene can provide insight into the ancient geographical events of western North America. We believe that major geologic events influencing the diversification of mountain suckers include the rise of the Colorado Plateau, the connections between the ancient Snake River system and the Lahontan system and subsequently the connection of the Snake River system to the Columbia Basin, dispersal of mountain suckers across the continental divide, as well as the Pleistocene Bonneville flood. If this is true, we should see …
Prediction Of Respiratory Motion, Suk Jin Lee
Prediction Of Respiratory Motion, Suk Jin Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment method that employs high-energy radiation beams to destroy cancer cells by damaging the ability of these cells to reproduce. Thoracic and abdominal tumors may change their positions during respiration by as much as three centimeters during radiation treatment. The prediction of respiratory motion has become an important research area because respiratory motion severely affects precise radiation dose delivery. This study describes recent radiotherapy technologies including tools for measuring target position during radiotherapy and tracking-based delivery systems. In the first part of our study we review three prediction approaches of respiratory motion, i.e., model-based methods, …

Structural Basis For Ca 2+-Induced Activation And Dimerization Of Estrogen Receptor Alpha By Calmodulin, Yonghong Zhang, Zhigang Li, David B. Sacks, James B. Ames
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
The estrogen receptor α (ER-α) regulates expression of target genes implicated in development, metabolism, and breast cancer. Calcium-dependent regulation of ER-α is critical for activating gene expression and is controlled by calmodulin (CaM). Here, we present the NMR structures for the two lobes of CaM each bound to a localized region of ER-α (residues 287–305). A model of the complete CaM·ER-α complex was constructed by combining these two structures with additional data. The two lobes of CaM both compete for binding at the same site on ER-α (residues 292, 296, 299, 302, and 303), which explains why full-length CaM binds …

Courts Termination Of Parental Rights; Certain Termination: Amend Provisions Relating To Juvenile Proceedings And Parental Rights, Georgia State University Law Review
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act changes provisions relating to termination of parental rights when the child is not in the parent's custody. The Act makes the adoption of children easier by terminating parental rights in appropriate cases. The Act makes it more difficult for parents to circumvent termination by attempting to contact a child before the statutory time period for termination lapses. The Act ties together Title 15 and Title 19 of the Code so that the standards for adoption will be the same regardless of whether the case is heard in Juvenile or Superior Court. Finally, the Act updates adoption forms to …
