Glycosylation Of Human Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) Decreases The Efficacy Of Certain Cox-2 Inhibitors., Mary B. Sevigny, Kamara Graham, Esmeralda Ponce, Maggie Louie, Kylie Mitchell

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Prostanoids play an important role in a variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes including inflammation and cancer. The rate-limiting step in the prostanoid biosynthesis pathway is catalyzed by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). COX-2 exists as two glycoforms, 72 and 74 kDa, the latter resulting from an additional glycosylation at Asn(580). In this study, Asn(580) was mutated, and the mutant and wild-type COX-2 genes were expressed in COS-1 cells to determine how glycosylation affects the inhibition of COX-2 activity by aspirin, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, celecoxib, and etoricoxib. Results indicate that certain inhibitors were 2-5 times more effective at inhibiting COX-2 activity when the glycosylation …

World Trade And Biological Exchanges Before 1492, Eric N. Jellen, John L. Sorenson, Carl L. Johannessen Apr 2012

World Trade And Biological Exchanges Before 1492, Eric N. Jellen, John L. Sorenson, Carl L. Johannessen

BYU Studies

This book by John L. Sorenson (emeritus professor of anthropology at Brigham Young University) and Carl L. Johannessen (emeritus professor of geography at the University of Oregon) presents a comprehensive, well-referenced, and intriguing overview of historical and archeological evidence for pre-Columbian exchange of plants, microfauna, and animals between the Old and New Worlds. Its style is more encyclopedic than narrative, resembling an expanded, annotated bibliography. I read with interest the sections dealing with the crops that I have researched genetically--Amaranthus and Chenopodium--as well as several other crops that I am very familiar with, such as cotton.

Opposing Jim Crow, Meredith L. Roman Apr 2012

Opposing Jim Crow, Meredith L. Roman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Before the Nazis came to power in Germany, Soviet officials labeled the United States the most racist country in the world. Photographs, children’s stories, films, newspaper articles, political education campaigns, and court proceedings exposed the hypocrisy of America’s racial democracy. In contrast, the Soviets represented the USSR itself as a superior society where racism was absent and identified African Americans as valued allies in resisting an imminent imperialist war against the first workers’ state. Meredith L. Roman’s Opposing Jim Crow examines the period between 1928 and 1937, when the promotion of antiracism by party and trade union officials in Moscow …

Multiple Facets Of Damage Caused By Exposure To Low-Dose Radiation And The Legal Remedy, Yi-Chen Su, Peter W.S. Chang

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

In addition to the toll in human life, there are at least three facets of damage caused by the protracted exposure to low-dose radiation: bodily injury, mental anguish, and property injury. After examining cases and compensation schemes in the United States and Taiwan, this article concludes that both the Taiwanese administrative compensation scheme and U.S. federal courts' interpretation of the Price-Anderson Act favor finding injury to the claimants' property, but not adverse effects to their health. To redress the injustice caused by the systemic bias, this article argues that the tort system should be adapted to tolerate gray area, such …

Basic Capillary Microfluidic Chip And Highly Sensitive Optical Detector For Point Of Care Application, Mingjin Yao Apr 2012

Basic Capillary Microfluidic Chip And Highly Sensitive Optical Detector For Point Of Care Application, Mingjin Yao

Doctoral Dissertations

A cost-effective and highly sensitive portable diagnostic device is needed to enable much more widespread monitoring of health conditions in disease prevention, detection, and control. Miniaturized and easy-to-operate devices can reduce the inherent costs and inefficiencies associated with healthcare testing in central laboratories. Hence, clinicians are beginning to use point of care (POC) testing and flexible clinical chemistry testing devices which are beneficial for the patient.

In our work, a low-cost and simple autonomous microfluidic device for biochemical detection was developed. The pumpless capillary system with capillary stop valves and trigger valves is fabricated on a silicon (Si) wafer and …

A Victorian Christmas In Hell: Yuletide Ghosts And Necessary Pleasures In The Age Of Capital, Brandon Chitwood Apr 2012

A Victorian Christmas In Hell: Yuletide Ghosts And Necessary Pleasures In The Age Of Capital, Brandon Chitwood

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation explores how the cultural and literary development – one might argue, creation – of a specifically Victorian Christmas arose in response to social anxieties related to the expansion of industrial capitalism, Darwinian theories of evolution, and the increasingly problematic definition of the family during the nineteenth century in Britain. Using a Lacanian psychoanalytic lens, the dissertation explores how the liminal figure of the ghost pervades the literary narrativization of the Christmas holiday, and how such ghosts provided uncanny comforts to a reading public increasingly horrified by social, economic, and natural forces seemingly beyond their control. The dissertation argues …

Why A Lost Lady Is Naturalist, Judy Liu '14 Apr 2012

Why A Lost Lady Is Naturalist, Judy Liu '14

2012 Spring Semester

In Steven Crane’s Maggie, people survive in a downcast world, where desperate people squelch the hope of those around them. This hopeless environment reduces the characters, even the once innocent, beautiful Maggie, into a creature that is more animal than human. This situation is also seen in A Lost Lady. Instead of having happy, idealized events, both novels are realistic and often pessimistic, with characters whose descriptions and behaviors do not match up with what is expected of a human being. Willa Cather’s A Lost Lady is a naturalist text due to the dehumanization of the characters through …

The Naturalist Meaning Behind The Words, Mateusz Wojtaszek '14

2012 Spring Semester

Charles Darwin changed the face of biology and science when he published his groundbreaking work of scientific literature, On the Origin of Species. He proposed that all organisms are related and that a force, known as natural selection, acts on all living things. This book opened a whole new world for biologists everywhere. But it also brought about a change in the philosophy of literature, which is known as the naturalist movement. Writers began to believe that humans and animals are, in the end, the same- they are affected by similar forces and have the same instincts. Novels such as …

Examining The Effects Of Fear Of Failure, Self-Efficacy And Gender Role Conflict In Male And Female Engineering Students, Krista L. Nelson Apr 2012

Examining The Effects Of Fear Of Failure, Self-Efficacy And Gender Role Conflict In Male And Female Engineering Students, Krista L. Nelson

Doctoral Dissertations

The field of engineering continues to have significantly fewer women engineers than men. Engineering has long been considered to be a male dominated career, with fewer women receiving bachelor's degrees in engineering and gaining employment in the engineering field. The present study was an attempt to determine influencing factors that discourage women from pursuing engineering as an educational and career choice. The current study examined gender role conflict, self-efficacy, and fear of failure as potential factors influencing women's preferences to pursue an engineering degree. Both male and female genders were participants in the research to determine gender differences for these …
