Genetic Connectivity In Scleractinian Corals Across The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Oil/Gas Platforms, And Relationship To The Flower Garden Banks, Daniel A. Brazeau, Paul W. Sammarco, James Sinclair Apr 2012

Genetic Connectivity In Scleractinian Corals Across The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Oil/Gas Platforms, And Relationship To The Flower Garden Banks, Daniel A. Brazeau, Paul W. Sammarco, James Sinclair

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The 3,000 oil/gas structures currently deployed in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) provide hard substratum for marine organisms in a region where such has been rare since the Holocene. The major exception to this are the Flower Garden Banks (FGB). Corals are known to have colonized oil/gas platforms around the FGB, facilitating biogeographic expansion. We ask the question, what are the patterns of genetic affinity in these coral populations. We sampled coral tissue from populations of two species occurring on oil and gas platforms: Madracis decactis (hermatype) and Tubastraea coccinea (invasive ahermatype). We sampled 28 platforms along four transects …

Trait Convergence And Plasticity Among Native And Invasive Species In Resource-Poor Environments, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Albina Khasanova, Jeremy J. James Apr 2012

Trait Convergence And Plasticity Among Native And Invasive Species In Resource-Poor Environments, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Albina Khasanova, Jeremy J. James

Biology

Premise of study: Functional trait comparisons provide a framework with which to assess invasion and invasion resistance. However, recent studies have found evidence for both trait convergence and divergence among coexisting dominant native and invasive species. Few studies have assessed how multiple stresses constrain trait values and plasticity, and no study has included direct measurements of nutrient conservation traits, which are critical to plants growing in low-resource environments. Methods: We evaluated how nutrient and water stresses affect growth and allocation, water potential and gas exchange, and nitrogen (N) allocation and use traits among a suite of six codominant species from …

Evidence Against Equimolarity Of Large Repeat Arrangements And A Predominant Master Circle Structure Of The Mitochondrial Genome From A Monkeyflower (Mimulus Guttatus) Lineage With Cryptic Cms, Jeffrey P. Mower, Andrea L. Case, Eric R. Floro, John H. Willis Apr 2012

Willis

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Despite intense investigation for over 25 years, the in vivo structure of plant mitochondrial genomes remains uncertain. Mapping studies and genome sequencing generally produce large circular chromosomes, whereas electrophoretic and microscopic studies typically reveal linear and multi-branched molecules. To more fully assess the structure of plant mitochondrial genomes, the complete sequence of the monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus DC. line IM62) mtDNA was constructed from a large (35 kb) paired-end shotgun sequencing library to a high depth of coverage (~30x). The complete genome maps as a 525,671 bp circular molecule and exhibits a fairly conventional set of features including 62 genes …

Numerical Simulation Of Nanopulse Penetration Of Biological Matter Using The Adi-Fdtd Method, Fei Zhu Apr 2012

Numerical Simulation Of Nanopulse Penetration Of Biological Matter Using The Adi-Fdtd Method, Fei Zhu

Doctoral Dissertations

Nanopulses are ultra-wide-band (UWB) electromagnetic pulses with pulse duration of only a few nanoseconds and electric field amplitudes greater than 105 V/m. They have been widely used in the development of new technologies in the field of medicine. Therefore, the study of the nanopulse bioeffects is important to ensure the appropriate application with nanopulses in biomedical and biotechnological settings. The conventional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method for solving Maxwell's equations has been proven to be an effective method to solve the problems related to electromagnetism. However, its application is restricted by the Courant, Friedrichs, and Lewy (CFL) stability condition that confines …

Science And Society: The Role Of Long-Term Studies In Environmental Stewardship, Charles T. Driscoll, Kathleen F. Lambert, F. Stuart Chapin, David J. Nowake, Thomas A. Spies, Frederick J. Swanson, David B. Kittredge, Clarisse M. Hart

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Long-term research should play a crucial role in addressing grand challenges in environmental stewardship. We examine the efforts of five Long Term Ecological Research Network sites to enhance policy, management, and conservation decisions for forest ecosystems. In these case studies, we explore the approaches used to inform policy on atmospheric deposition, public land management, land conservation, and urban forestry, including decisionmaker engagement and integration of local knowledge, application of models to analyze the potential consequences of policy and management decisions, and adaptive management to generate new knowledge and incorporate it into decisionmaking. Efforts to enhance the role of long-term research …

Reliability Of Agricultural Statistics In Developing Countries: Reflections From A Comprehensive Village Survey On Crop Area Statistics In India, Gopal Naik, K P Basavaraj, V R Hegde, Vijay Paidi, Arjunan Subramanian Apr 2012

Reliability Of Agricultural Statistics In Developing Countries: Reflections From A Comprehensive Village Survey On Crop Area Statistics In India, Gopal Naik, K P Basavaraj, V R Hegde, Vijay Paidi, Arjunan Subramanian

Working Papers

Despite the importance of agriculture in developing countries, and the general recognition of the need for strengthening data quality, very few studies examine the quality of available data and the data generation methods in agriculture. In this paper, we use data from an extensive deployment of geospatial technology, administrated concurrently alongside the conventional method in the Indian state of Karnataka, to assess the discrepancy between methods in terms of the magnitude of difference in the crop area, type and number of crops grown. The crop area estimates based on alternative method, utilising the geospatial technology, exceeded that from the estimates …

Student Mobility From India To Selected European Countries: The Case Of Germany And France, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda Apr 2012

Student Mobility From India To Selected European Countries: The Case Of Germany And France, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda

Working Papers

The development of European policies on higher education in the last two decades has facilitated and encouraged (inward) non-European student mobility. This paper examines the issue of student mobility between two European host countries, namely Germany and France and a leading source country, namely India. Often regarded as the "middle players", the paper identifies factors that drive the demand for higher education in these alternative destinations and elements that have contributed to their growing visibility among Indian students. The paper draws on findings from a recently conducted survey on Indian students in Europe to also identify the challenges associated with …

Indian Student Mobility To Selected European Countries: An Overview, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda

Working Papers

One of the most significant changes in recent years has been an evolution in the role of education in the global arena. As education has increasingly assumed the role of a tradable service, countries from all parts of the world have become active participants in the ongoing internationalization of higher education. One of the key outcomes of this process has been the phenomenal growth in international student mobility since 1998. A burgeoning industry which generates revenues of up to 90 billion dollars clearly spells strong financial incentives for participants of this industry. It also implies that factors influencing international student …

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods Apr 2012

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods

Journal of International and Global Studies

In both popular and academic imagination, Islamization and globalization are the opposing processes, representing ”the clash of civilizations” (Huntington, 1993,1996). In Southeast Asia, specifically, globalization is imagined as something distinctly Western and, hence, inherently at odds with Islam, while Islam, meanwhile, is seen as the natural enemy of globalization. This paper instead sees Muslims as active participants in globalization. Further, it explores the concept of “Muslim globalization” to suggest that Islam has long been a globalizing force alongside Western-based capitalism and other forces. It explores this general model by using examples primarily from Southeast Asia

Identification And Analysis Of Stereoselective Drug Interactions With Low Density Lipoprotein By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Matt Sobansky, David S. Hage Apr 2012

Identification And Analysis Of Stereoselective Drug Interactions With Low Density Lipoprotein By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Matt Sobansky, David S. Hage

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Columns containing immobilized low density lipoprotein (LDL) were prepared for the analysis of drug interactions with this agent by high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC). R/SPropranolol was used as a model drug for this study. The LDL columns gave reproducible binding to propranolol over 60 h of continuous use in the presence of pH 7.4, 0.067 M potassium phosphate buffer. Experiments conducted with this type of column through frontal analysis indicated that two types of interactions were occurring between R-propranolol and LDL, while only a single type of interaction was observed between S-propranolol and LDL. The first type …

Different Selective Pressures Lead To Different Genomic Outcomes As Newly-Formed Hybrid Yeasts Evolve, Jeff S. Piotrowski, Saisubramanian Nagarajan, Evgueny Kroll, Alison Stanbery, Kami E. Chiotti, Arthur L. Kruckeberg, Barbara Dunn, Gavin Sherlock, Frank Rosenzweig Apr 2012

Different Selective Pressures Lead To Different Genomic Outcomes As Newly-Formed Hybrid Yeasts Evolve, Jeff S. Piotrowski, Saisubramanian Nagarajan, Evgueny Kroll, Alison Stanbery, Kami E. Chiotti, Arthur L. Kruckeberg, Barbara Dunn, Gavin Sherlock, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Interspecific hybridization occurs in every eukaryotic kingdom. While hybrid progeny are frequently at a selective disadvantage, in some instances their increased genome size and complexity may result in greater stress resistance than their ancestors, which can be adaptively advantageous at the edges of their ancestors' ranges. While this phenomenon has been repeatedly documented in the field, the response of hybrid populations to long-term selection has not often been explored in the lab. To fill this knowledge gap we crossed the two most distantly related members of the Saccharomyces sensu stricto group, S. cerevisiae and S. uvarum, and established a …

Mobile Technology Update To Delone And Mclean Model Of Information Success, Jason Ryberg Apr 2012

Mobile Technology Update To Delone And Mclean Model Of Information Success, Jason Ryberg

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Senior managers are challenged to measure the success of their IT systems when justifying technology investments needed to meet the organization"â„¢s mission. Due to increasing implementation of mobile technology, enterprise adoption of smartphones is no exception. Traditionally, the DeLone and McLean Information Systems (IS) Success Model has been proven as a valid framework for measuring IS success. However, it has not been updated to address the success variables related to mobile technology. Many studies on mobile technology have reviewed mobile success, but none have attempted theoretical assimilation. This thesis attempts to correct this situation by examining the DeLone and McLean …

Religion And Politics In Romania: From Public Affairs To Church-State Relations, Lavinia Stan, Lucian Turescu Apr 2012

Religion And Politics In Romania: From Public Affairs To Church-State Relations, Lavinia Stan, Lucian Turescu

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

In November 2010, Romanian legislator Liviu Campanu, representing the governing coalition, proposed Daniel Ciobotea as Prime Minister of a cabinet of "national union." The suggestion was surprising because Ciobotea is leader of the Orthodox Church, accounting for 86.8% of the country's population (International Religious Freedom Report, 2009). It would not be the first time when the Orthodox Patriarch assumed such a political role - Miron Cristea headed the government from 1938 to 1939. While Ciobotea quietly ignored it, the proposal reflected not only deep dissatisfaction with the government, but also the respect the Orthodox Church enjoys among Romanians. The Church …
