Fostering Growth In The Survivorship Experience: Investigating Breast Cancer Survivors’ Lived Experiences Scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro From A Posttraumatic Growthperspective, Shaunna M. Burke, Catherine M. Sabiston

The Qualitative Report

The aim of this study was to use an ethnographic case study approach to explore breast cancer survivors’ experiences scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro from a posttraumatic growth perspective. Three breast cancer survivors who participated in interviews and observations during a nine-day climb on the mountain were included in this study. Findings are presented first as three individual case studies and then offered as a cross-case analysis to emphasize themes that illustrated the women’s shared experiences of growing from adversity. Participation in the climb on Mt. Kilimanjaro provided an opportunity for the women to (a) nurture priorities, (b) foster self-belief, and (c) …

Thermal Impacts Of A Coal Power Plant On The Plankton In An Open Coastal Water Environment, Keun-Hyung Choi, Young-Ok Kim, Joon-Baek Lee, Soon-Young Wang, Man-Woo Lee, Pyung-Gang Lee, Dong-Sik Ahn, Jae-Sang Hong, Ho-Young Soh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Over a five-year period, this study examined the overall impact of coal power plant cooling processes on entrained copepods and the local plankton community on the west coast of Korea. Mortality differences between the intake and discharge water of the single most dominant copepod, Acartia hongi, were positively correlated with temperature differences between the two locations. Laboratory tests showed copepod sensitivity to temperature increase, and with very low chlorine concentration applied, thermal stress was the major source of copepod mortality. Chlorophyll a concentration, ciliate abundance, and total copepod abundance at the intake showed no discernable differences from the values at …

Nature Versus Nurture: A Study Of Adopted And Biological Children And Their Behavioral Patterns, Courtney Janaye Grenke Apr 2012

Nature Versus Nurture: A Study Of Adopted And Biological Children And Their Behavioral Patterns, Courtney Janaye Grenke

Senior Honors Theses

Nurses encounter many different populations of people every day and they must know how to treat them. Adopted children are a population that nurses encounter and there are disagreements concerning whether they are at an increased risk for developing behavioral problems as compared to biological children. It is also debated whether genetics or environment plays a more prominent role in childhood development. Most studies conclude that adopted children are at an increased risk for more behavioral problems due to the unique struggles and challenges they must overcome with genetics playing a bigger role than environment. Nurses can use this information …

Double-Power Double-Heterostructure Light-Emitting Diodes In Microalgae, Spirulina Platensis And Nannochloropsis Oculata, Cultures, Yean-Chang Chen, Meng-Chou Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The growth conditions of two microalgae, Spirulina platensis and Nannochloropsis oculata, were tested under various light sources including white cold DDH GaAlAs LED, traditional fluorescent lamps and natural light cultures, with no difference found in the growth of biomass, indicating that white cold DDH GaAlAs LED could replace traditional fluorescent lamps, thus providing for large saving on electricity costs and preservation of cultural space. To date, the use of white cold DDH GaAlAs LEDs as light source for microalgal cultures seems to be largely unstudied.

Identification Of Common Variants Associated With Human Hippocampal And Intracranial Volumes, Jason L. Stein, Anderson M. Winkler, Laura Almasy, Joanne E. Curran, Marcio Almeida, Ravi Duggirala, Thomas D. Dyer, Harald H. H. Goring, Matthew P. Johnson, John Blangero Apr 2012

Identification Of Common Variants Associated With Human Hippocampal And Intracranial Volumes, Jason L. Stein, Anderson M. Winkler, Laura Almasy, Joanne E. Curran, Marcio Almeida, Ravi Duggirala, Thomas D. Dyer, Harald H. H. Goring, Matthew P. Johnson, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Identifying genetic variants influencing human brain structures may reveal new biological mechanisms underlying cognition and neuropsychiatric illness. The volume of the hippocampus is a biomarker of incipient Alzheimer's disease and is reduced in schizophrenia, major depression and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Whereas many brain imaging phenotypes are highly heritable, identifying and replicating genetic influences has been difficult, as small effects and the high costs of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have led to underpowered studies. Here we report genome-wide association meta-analyses and replication for mean bilateral hippocampal, total brain and intracranial volumes from a large multinational consortium. The intergenic variant rs7294919 …

A Multidimensional Approach To Measuring How Impulsivity Corresponds To The Gambling Of College Students, Meredith Kathleen Ginley Apr 2012

A Multidimensional Approach To Measuring How Impulsivity Corresponds To The Gambling Of College Students, Meredith Kathleen Ginley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Impulsivity has been implicated as a contributing factor in the development of gambling problems among college students, but attempts to confirm this relation has been inconsistent. An explanation for incongruous findings is that impulsivity may be multidimensional and differentially predictive of behaviors. Utilizing a diverse sample of college students, a factor analysis of self-report measures of impulsivity revealed a three-factor structure of Behavioral Activation, Preference for Stimulation, and Inhibition Control that was remarkably similar to the structure found by Meda and colleagues (2009). Low risk and symptomatic gamblers scored significantly lower on Behavioral Activation and Inhibition Control than non-gamblers. Conversely, …

The Essence Of The Distributed Leadership Experience Of A High School Literacy Coaching Team: A Phenomenological Study, Nancy Spaniak

Dissertations

This is a phenomenological study of a high school literacy coaching team’s experience during the 2010-2011 school year, the first year of its existence. As a distributed leadership organizational routine, the practice of literacy coaching was adopted by a large suburban high school to promote its initiative to infuse literacy strategies into every teacher’s classroom instruction. The purpose of the study was to uncover the essence of the literacy coaching team’s distributed leadership experience in order to elucidate the effect of distributed leadership on developing the literacy coaching initiative in general, and the literacy coaching team members as leaders in …

Saints, "Savages," And Smallpox: Epidemic Disease And The Colonization Of New England, 1616-1637, Steven Charles Buckingham Apr 2012

Saints, "Savages," And Smallpox: Epidemic Disease And The Colonization Of New England, 1616-1637, Steven Charles Buckingham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis argues that native epidemics of European infections were crucial to the English colonization of New England. In the early seventeenth century, this region was densely populated with natives who were happy to trade with Europeans but prevented them from establishing permanent settlements there. But in 1616, an epidemic, probably of smallpox, killed thousands of natives along the New England coast, creating conditions that helped ensure the survival of the Pilgrims' settlement at Plymouth and facilitating subsequent English expansion in New England. Then in 1633, in the midst of the Puritan "Great Migration," another smallpox outbreak caused extensive native …

The Relations Of Ethnicity And Stress With Smoking, Nicole Lynn Workman Apr 2012

The Relations Of Ethnicity And Stress With Smoking, Nicole Lynn Workman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Previous research has shown that African American teens are less likely to smoke than Caucasian teens, but prevalance of smoking among African American adults is nearly equal that of Caucasian adults. These findings suggest African Americans may increase their uptake of tobacco later in life. One variable that may contribute to the increase in smoking is stress. The current study sought to explore ethnic differences in the amount of stress as well as in the strength of the association of stress with smoking among African Amercian vs. Caucasian youth. This cross-sectional study examined 4,443 high school students recruited from the …

Maternal Investment In Physa Acuta, Lauren Awdziejczyk, William Jaeckle, Faculty Advisor Apr 2012

Maternal Investment In Physa Acuta, Lauren Awdziejczyk, William Jaeckle, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

In oviparous reproduction there is a proposed relationship between maternal resources allocated to each egg and offspring viability. This balance between producing a viable next generation without over-expending personal resources has been previously studied in amphibians and sea urchin species. The freshwater snail Physa acuta continuously lays clutches of 5 to 50 eggs every 12 to 24 hours. Comparisons of egg capsules (n=375) laid by four individuals over the span of one week revealed that there was little variation in every capsule volume and clutch size among eggs laid by any individual. There were differences between capsule and clutch size …

On Edwin H. Land's Retinex Theory: Developing A Classroom Demonstration For Color Vision, Joseph Lim, Bruno Deharak, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The phenomenon of visual perception is a fundamental process that many take for granted. Perception of color is important because it allows for the identification of food, avoidance of possible threats from the environment and communication.

Color perception begins when light from the environment is absorbed by the color detecting photoreceptors in the retina. These photoreceptors converge onto color-coded horizontal cells, ganglion cells, lateral geniculate cells of the parvocellular division and cells of the visual cortex. Understanding this relationship, Edwin H. Land coined the term “Retinex” to demonstrate that color perception involves all levels of visual processing, from retina to …

A Multimode Fluorescent Microscope, Boxiang Liu, Nathaniel Nesbit, Gabriel Spalding, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

We present a fluorescent microscope that is available in confocal and total internal reflection mode. The design of the microscope includes two convex lenses in the incident and output stage, which enables the confocal mode; a dichroic mirror, a neutral density filter and a 50/50 mirror that enables the additional spectrometer function. To make the design compact, we utilized cage components, as well as upside-down setup. Our goal in the near future is to use this microscope to observe quantum dot blinking phenomenon.

Members of the Illinois Wesleyan University General Biology Science Education Alliance (SEA) laboratory isolated and characterized a number of distinctive mycobacteriophages. Each student collected soil samples from the central Illinois area then used streak assays and titrations to isolate unique phages that infect Mycobacterium smegmatis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and DNA restriction enzyme digests were used to determine the morphology and tentative cluster placement of each phage. By the end of the semester, fifteen novel phages were isolated with a wide range of characteristics, despite the small sampling area. This data was submitted to the Mycobacteriophage DataBase. After analysis …

Hypoxia-Ischemia In The Immature Brain And Mechanisms Of Reducing Tissue Damage, Victoria Simmons, Susan Vannucci, Faculty Advisor, Edgar Lehr, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Cerebral hypoxia-ischemia in human infants presents a complex clinical problem in that no standardized treatment currently exists. With an understanding of the cellular and metabolic changes brought about during hypoxia-ischemia in the immature brain, researchers can better understand the course of damage caused by ischemia. Such damage was induced in young rats in an attempt to learn more about the mechanisms of hypoxia-ischemia. Seven-day-old rat pups underwent permanent unilateral carotid artery ligation and then were exposed to systemic hypoxia. At 15 days of postnatal age, researchers used neuropathologic analysis, gross examination, and staining of brain slices to assess the severity …

Milagros, Bronx African American History Project Apr 2012

Milagros, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Milagros is a former teacher in the Bronx who immigrated to the United States from Cuba. In her interview, she discussed her experience escaping from Castro’s government as well as the manner in which society had shaped her identity.

Prior to living in the United States, Milagros resided in Cuba for 20 years. She stated that in Cuba, race was not as important as it was in America. Instead, status was determined by which family you had been born into. However, she did say that neighbors in Cuba were like relatives to her family, and recounted incidents where she had …
