Neuromusicology And Combat-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury, Elisabeth Spinniken Apr 2012

Neuromusicology And Combat-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury, Elisabeth Spinniken

Honors Theses

The number of reported cases of combat-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) among American veterans is rapidly increasing. The results of TBI are often a combination of deficits in cognitive, physical, emotional, and behavioral functions. Each case poses unique challenges for all involved—soldiers, their families, and health care personnel. Though each case is unique, common symptoms include impaired gross and fine motor, speech and language, memory, attention, visual, auditory, and emotional functioning (Davis, Gfeller, Thaut, 2008).

Due to the holistic nature of TBI symptoms, finding an effective yet cost-efficient treatment modality proves to be a difficult task. Previous research has suggested …

Choosing Surgical Birth: Personal Choice And Medical Jurisdiction, Alexandria Vasquez Apr 2012

Choosing Surgical Birth: Personal Choice And Medical Jurisdiction, Alexandria Vasquez

Theses and Dissertations

This is an exploratory study of women’s childbearing decisions and outcomes in non-medically indicated cesarean section childbirths (CS). Focusing on the structure-agency dichotomy, the research is guided by Anthony Giddens’ theory of structuration used in the context of the medicalization framework in order to analyze elements of personal choice and medical jurisdiction in childbearing methods. Quantitative analysis of secondary data and a thematic content analysis of Internet forums are conducted in order to analyze women’s perceptions of autonomy and constraint in their childbearing decisions and outcomes. The findings suggest that the polarization between second- and third wave feminist critiques on …

Sources And Fates Of Nutrients In The Tidal, Freshwater James River, William Isenberg Apr 2012

Sources And Fates Of Nutrients In The Tidal, Freshwater James River, William Isenberg

Theses and Dissertations

Tidal freshwater reaches of estuaries may play an important role in mitigating nutrient fluxes from watersheds to the coastal zone due to their location at the interface between riverine and estuarine systems. We developed annual N and P budgets for the tidal, freshwater James River over 4 calendar years (2007-2010) taking into account riverine inputs at the Fall Line, local points sources (including CSO events), ungagued inputs, riverine outputs, and tidal exchange. The tidal freshwater James River experiences high areal loading rates of TN (383 mg/m2/d) and TP (70 mg/m2/d) due to the combined effects of large watershed area and …

Drive-Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy: From Vacuum To Liquids, Miriam Jaafar, David Martinez-Martin, Mariano Cuenca, John Melcher, Arvind Raman, Julio Gomez-Herrero Apr 2012

Drive-Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy: From Vacuum To Liquids, Miriam Jaafar, David Martinez-Martin, Mariano Cuenca, John Melcher, Arvind Raman, Julio Gomez-Herrero

Birck and NCN Publications

We introduce drive-amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy as a dynamic mode with outstanding performance in all environments from vacuum to liquids. As with frequency modulation, the new mode follows a feedback scheme with two nested loops: The first keeps the cantilever oscillation amplitude constant by regulating the driving force, and the second uses the driving force as the feedback variable for topography. Additionally, a phase-locked loop can be used as a parallel feedback allowing separation of the conservative and nonconservative interactions. We describe the basis of this mode and present some examples of its performance in three different environments. Drive-amplutide modulation …

Studying The Functional Role Of Protein Presequence Domains In Euglena Gracilis, Vamsi Krishna Vejerla Apr 2012

Studying The Functional Role Of Protein Presequence Domains In Euglena Gracilis, Vamsi Krishna Vejerla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Euglena plastid is thought to have evolved from a phagocytosed eukaryotic algae residing within a vacuolar compartment. Critical to the conversion of endosymbiont into a plastid was development of a mechanism to return nuclear encoded plastid proteins back to the chloroplast. The chloroplast protein targeting bipartite presequence contains an ER targeting signal peptide and a plastid targeting transit peptide. Since only some Euglena plastid targeted proteins contain a transit peptide hydrophobic domain, the evolutionary origin and function of this domain remains unclear. Targeting sequence function is evolutionarily conserved as evidenced by the in vitro co-translational translocation of Euglena chloroplast …

Comparison Of A Traditional And Modified Daniel Fast On Blood Lipids, Lipid Peroxidation, And Inflammation, Rick John Alleman Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dietary modification involving the removal of animal products, protein, and processed foods results in rapid and significant improvements in multiple health markers. We compared the impact of two restriction models on biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular health over a 21-day intervention. One model was a stringent vegan diet; the other was identical but included ~30g/d of additional protein in the form of meat and dairy. Compared to baseline, both models resulted in similar and significant improvements in blood lipids, as well as a reduction in inflammation. Modification of dietary intake may improve risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Southern Graces: Women, Faith, And The Quest For Social Justice, Memphis, Tennessee, 1950-1969, Doris Ann Youngblood Mulhearn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Memphis,Tennessee was thrust into the national civil rights movement after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The city, however, has a much more complex connection with civil rights activity than the traditional narratives imply. As early as 1950, both black and white Memphians attempted to address the social inequities of Jim Crow. Many of these early social justice activists were women. Although the assumption is that the women would be Protestant because of the historical association of African Americans with Protestant denominations as well as the lack of a significant Catholic population inTennessee, there was a …

2-Allylphenyl Glycosides As Complementary Building Blocks For Oligosaccharide And Glycoconjugate Synthesis, Hemali Premathilake, Alexei Demchenko Apr 2012

2-Allylphenyl Glycosides As Complementary Building Blocks For Oligosaccharide And Glycoconjugate Synthesis, Hemali Premathilake, Alexei Demchenko

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The O-allylphenyl (AP) anomeric moiety was investigated as a new leaving group that can be activated for chemical glycosylation under a variety of conditions, through both direct and remote pathways. Differentiation between the two activation pathways was achieved in a mechanistic study. The orthogonal-type activation of the AP moiety along with common thioglycosides allows for the execution of efficient oligosaccharide assembly.

Isolated Amyloid-Β(1−42) Protofibrils, But Not Isolated Fibrils, Are Robust Stimulators Of Microglia, Geeta Paranjape, Lisa Gouwens, David Osborn, Michael Nichols Apr 2012

Isolated Amyloid-Β(1−42) Protofibrils, But Not Isolated Fibrils, Are Robust Stimulators Of Microglia, Geeta Paranjape, Lisa Gouwens, David Osborn, Michael Nichols

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Senile plaques composed of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) are an unshakable feature of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain. Although there is significant debate on the role of the plaques in AD progression, there is little disagreement on their role in stimulating a robust inflammatory response within the context of the disease. Significant inflammatory markers such as activated microglia and cytokines are observed almost exclusively surrounding the plaques. However, recent evidence suggests that the plaque exterior may contain a measurable level of soluble Aβ aggregates. The observations that microglia activation in vivo is selectively stimulated by distinct Aβ deposits led us to …

Nguyen V. Ins And The Application Of Intermediate Scrutiny To Gender Classifications: Theory, Practice, And Reality, Norman T. Deutsch Apr 2012

Nguyen V. Ins And The Application Of Intermediate Scrutiny To Gender Classifications: Theory, Practice, And Reality, Norman T. Deutsch

Pepperdine Law Review

The Supreme Court has articulated three theoretically different standards of review for determining whether government action has denied any person equal protection of the laws: rational basis, intermediate scrutiny, and strict scrutiny. One area of this tri-level jurisprudence that continues to be troublesome in practice is the application of intermediate scrutiny to gender classifications. Nguyen v. INS is significant because it is the first case in which all nine Justices unequivocally applied that standard in such a case. Nonetheless, the application of the standard remains problematic since the Court split five to four on its application to the facts. This …

Fetal Pain Legislation: Is It Viable?, Teresa Stanton Collett Apr 2012

Fetal Pain Legislation: Is It Viable?, Teresa Stanton Collett

Pepperdine Law Review

Whether a human fetus experiences pain during an abortion has been the subject of heated debate within medical, legal, and political circles for over two decades. In the 1980's President Reagan's statement that "when the lives of the unborn are snuffed out [by abortion], they often feel pain, pain that is long and agonizing," and the release of a controversial film entitled "The Silent Scream" were merely two of the events that kept this issue in public view. Federal and state legislative efforts to enact "partial birth abortion bans" have reignited public debate over fetal pain." Three years ago, the …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Preventing and reducing the onset of type 2 diabetes among American Indian/Alaska Native youth requires ground-breaking strategies to affect knowledge, attitudes, and cognitive decision-making skills. In an unparalleled endeavor to address the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes in tribal communities, a K-12 Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools (DETS) curriculum was created by eight tribal colleges and three federal agencies. This article highlights the results of the implementation phase, the final evaluation step in acquiring and measuring student knowledge and attitude gains through pre-post standardized assessment.

Modeling Health Inequities Research In Context And The Minority Researcher’S Role, Ari Mwachofi, Ngure Wamwachofi Apr 2012

Modeling Health Inequities Research In Context And The Minority Researcher’S Role, Ari Mwachofi, Ngure Wamwachofi

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Current health inequities research templates are flawed and self-defeating because they do not include historical inequalities as the central context that points to the root causes of health inequities. The context includes structural malformations which are products of the history of colonization and slavery that created racial separation and hierarchies which established Whites as the dominant group and non-Whites (minorities) as the subordinate group. Consequently it is difficult for mainstream researchers to capture the minorities’ core knowledge necessary for the creation of relevant and effective interventions for fundamental and sustainable improvement of their health. This paper proposes a health inequities …

A Changing Game: The Inclusion Of Transsexual Athletes In The Sports Industry, Joseph Randall Apr 2012

A Changing Game: The Inclusion Of Transsexual Athletes In The Sports Industry, Joseph Randall

Pace Intellectual Property, Sports & Entertainment Law Forum

Joseph Randall explores the emerging trend in the sports industry towards the inclusion of transsexual athletes. He analyzes the impact of Renee Richards v. United States Tennis Association, the first case to speak on the legal rights of transsexual athletes, and then provides an overview of how the sports industry is gradually making it easier for transsexual athletes to compete in athletics. Randall ultimately concludes that in the interests of ethics and equality, the sports industry has a duty to afford all transsexual players an equal opportunity to play.
