Ehrs Connect Research And Practice: Where Predictive Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, And Clinical Decision Support Intersect, Casey C. Bennett, Thomas W. Doub, Rebecca Selove

Center for Prevention Research Publications

Objectives

Electronic health records (EHRs) are only a first step in capturing and utilizing health-related data—the challenge is turning that data into useful information. Furthermore, EHRs are increasingly likely to include data relating to patient outcomes, functionality such as clinical decision support, and genetic information as well, and, as such, can be seen as repositories of increasingly valuable information about patients’ health conditions and responses to treatment over time.

Methods

We describe a case study of 423 patients treated by Centerstone within Tennessee and Indiana in which we utilized electronic health record data to generate predictive algorithms of individual patient …

Bulldog Backpack Program Provides Food For Local Elementary School Students, Office Of University Communications, Travis Sherrill

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

When Gardner-Webb’s Susan Manahan (biology professor) and Lou Ann Scates (registrar) read an article a year ago about the pandemic of child hunger, they knew they had to do something to help. “We were sitting in Lou Ann’s office,” Manahan remembers, “and we planned the entire idea right there.” That idea has grown into the Bulldog Backpack program, an initiative to provide needed food to hungry Springmore Elementary students and their families.

Joseph As Father In Guido Reni's St. Joseph Images, Alec Teresa Gardner Apr 2012

Joseph As Father In Guido Reni's St. Joseph Images, Alec Teresa Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a psychoanalytic examination of Guido Reni's motivations for creating an innovative painting series of St. Joseph and the Christ Child. The seventeenth-century artist developed a new depiction of Joseph as the tender and loving surrogate father of Christ. This new artistic emphasis on the intimate relationship between father and son reveals Reni's own psychological need to create a replacement father. Indeed, contemporary biographers report that Reni suffered from anxiety and an aversion to women throughout his life. These odd behavioral traits appear to have stemmed from Reni's lack of a supportive father figure. Thus, the artist created …

The Influence Of The Roman Atrium-House's Architecture And Use Of Space In Engendering The Power And Independence Of The Materfamilias, Anne Elizabeth Stott Apr 2012

The Influence Of The Roman Atrium-House's Architecture And Use Of Space In Engendering The Power And Independence Of The Materfamilias, Anne Elizabeth Stott

Theses and Dissertations

Architecture has a remarkable capacity to not only reflect social patterns and behaviors but to engender public image and identity. Therefore, it has proven to be a viable source for understanding the lives of ancient people. In fact, many scholars have established a connection between the atrium-house's design and the power and social identity of the paterfamilias, or male head of household. However, little has been said about what these same architectural features mean in relation to his female counterpart, the materfamilias. Therefore, this paper argues that the architecture of the atrium-house likewise engendered a sense of power …

Trends In Linear Extension Rates For Over 100-Year Period In Three Coral Species From Dry Tortugas, Florida, Adis Muslic Apr 2012

Trends In Linear Extension Rates For Over 100-Year Period In Three Coral Species From Dry Tortugas, Florida, Adis Muslic

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Study on 3 coral species, Montastraea faveolata, Diploria strigosa, and Siderastrea siderea was done to determine the trends in coral linear extension and the impact of sea-surface temperature (SST) and other environmental parameters on a shallow reef system from Dry Tortugas National Park. The extension rates were species-specific. Montastraea faveolata had the highest average linear extension and variability (0.84±0.14 (n=165)), followed by D. strigosa (0.73±0.06 (n=54)) and S. siderea (0.42±0.06 (n=183)) respectively. Two cores of M. faveolata had significant correlation with each other (r=0.34, df=67, P=0.0043) and similar long-term patterns although one of them had a higher average linear extension …

Novel Mouse Mammary Cell Lines For In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging (Bli) Of Bone Metastasis, Celeste Bolin, Caleb Sutherland, Ken Tawara, Jim Moselhy, Cheryl Jorcyk Apr 2012

Novel Mouse Mammary Cell Lines For In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging (Bli) Of Bone Metastasis, Celeste Bolin, Caleb Sutherland, Ken Tawara, Jim Moselhy, Cheryl Jorcyk

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Tumor cell lines that can be tracked in vivo during tumorigenesis and metastasis provide vital tools for studying the specific cellular mechanisms that mediate these processes as well as investigating therapeutic targets to inhibit them. The goal of this study was to engineer imageable mouse mammary tumor cell lines with discrete propensities to metastasize to bone in vivo. Two novel luciferase expressing cell lines were developed and characterized for use in the study of breast cancer metastasis to bone in a syngeneic mouse model.

Results

The 4T1.2 luc3 and 66c14 luc2 cell lines were shown to have high …

Detecting Methane Ebullition In Winter From Alaskan Lakes Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Remote Sensing, Melanie J. Engram Apr 2012

Detecting Methane Ebullition In Winter From Alaskan Lakes Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Remote Sensing, Melanie J. Engram

Engineering

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas with a high radiative forcing attribute, yet large uncertainties remain in constraining atmospheric CH4 sources and sinks. While freshwater lakes are known atmospheric CH4 sources, flux through ebullition (bubbling) is difficult to quantify in situ due to uneven spatial distribution and temporally irregular gas eruptions. This heterogeneous distribution of CH4 ebullition also creates error when scaling up field measurements for flux estimations. This thesis reviews estimates of CH4 contribution to the atmosphere by freshwater lakes presented in current literature and identifies knowledge gaps and the logistical difficulties in sampling CH 4 flux via ebullition …

Winter Precipitation Depths Across The North Slope Of Alaska Simulated From The Weather Research And Forcasting Model And Snowtran-3d, Sarah Jean Byam Apr 2012

Winter Precipitation Depths Across The North Slope Of Alaska Simulated From The Weather Research And Forcasting Model And Snowtran-3d, Sarah Jean Byam

Engineering

Accurately predicting snow distribution and blowing snow conditions in the Arctic is critical to the design of ice road construction and maintenance as well as for predicting water supplies and runoff during snowmelt, estimating the cost of snow removal, and forecasting tundra travel conditions. A current atmospheric model used by both the operational weather prediction and research communities is the Weather Research and Forecasting model. However, the built-in snow schemes in the model neglect redistribution of snow via wind, one of the key processes in snow pack evolution. This study will involve three parts: (1) diagnostic of the differences in …

A Literary Review Of Adhd Treatments: An Advocate For Neurofeedback, Jessica A. Steele Apr 2012

A Literary Review Of Adhd Treatments: An Advocate For Neurofeedback, Jessica A. Steele

Honors Theses

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder affecting a tremendous portion of children in the United States. Medication and traditional Behavioral interventions have remained the primary forms of treatment. Research has demonstrated that brain wave frequencies are directly associated with behavior. Children diagnosed with ADHD have abnormal EEG profiles compared to their peers. EEG Neurofeedback developed as an operant conditioning treatment for brain waves to influence behavior. Neurofeedback has been found as effective as medication without the negative side effects or high percent of non-responders. Unlike medication and Behavioral Treatments, Neurofeedback offers long-term effects following the conclusion of …

The Effect Of Mitochondrial Ultrastructure On Function And Thermal Tolerance In Antartic Notothenioid Fishes, Irina Andrea Mueller Apr 2012

The Effect Of Mitochondrial Ultrastructure On Function And Thermal Tolerance In Antartic Notothenioid Fishes, Irina Andrea Mueller

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The loss of hemoglobin in Antarctic icefishes is correlated with high mitochondrial volume densities and altered mitochondrial morphology in their oxidative muscle compared to red-blooded Antarctic notothenioid fish species. We hypothesized that differences in mitochondrial morphology between icefishes and red-blooded species might be correlated with differences in mitochondrial properties at their habitat temperature, near 0C. We further hypothesized that differences in function might become more pronounced as temperature increases and might contribute to the lower thermal tolerance of icefishes compared to red-blooded species. Proton leak, rates of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, membrane susceptibility to peroxidation and levels of antioxidants …
