While spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is characterized by motor neuron degeneration, it is unclear whether and how much survival motor neuron (SMN) protein deficiency in muscle contributes to the pathophysiology of the disease. There is increasing evidence from patients and SMA model organisms that SMN deficiency causes intrinsic muscle defects. Here we investigated the role of SMN in muscle development using muscle cell lines and primary myoblasts. Formation of multinucleate myotubes by SMN-deficient muscle cells is inhibited at a stage preceding plasma membrane fusion. We found increased expression and reduced induction of key muscle development factors, such as MyoD and …

The Anchor: 2012
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Natural reward and drugs of abuse converge upon the mesolimbic system which mediates motivation and reward behaviors. Drugs induce neural adaptations in this system, including transcriptional, morphological, and synaptic changes, which contribute to the development and expression of drug-related memories and addiction. Previously, it has been reported that sexual experience in male rats, a natural reward behavior, induces similar neuroplasticity in the mesolimbic system and affects natural reward and drug-related behavior. The current study determined whether sexual experience causes long-lasting changes in mating, or ionotropic glutamate receptor trafficking or function in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), following 3 different reward abstinence …

High And Persistent Hiv Seroincidence In Men Who Have Sex With Men Across 47 U.S. Cities, Marta-Louise Ackers, Alan E. Greenberg, Carol Y. Lin, Bradford N. Bartholow, Adrian Hirsch Goodman, Michael Longhi, Marc Gurwith
Epidemiology Faculty Publications
Objective
To provide HIV seroincidence data among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States and to identify predictive factors for seroconversion.
Methods
From 1998–2002, 4684 high-risk MSM, age 18–60 years, participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled HIV vaccine efficacy trial at 56 U.S. clinical trial sites. Demographics, behavioral data, and HIV status were assessed at baseline and 6 month intervals. Since no overall vaccine efficacy was detected, data were combined from both trial arms to calculate HIV incidence based on person-years (py) of follow-up. Predictors of seroconversion, adjusted hazards ratio (aHR), were evaluated using a Cox proportional …
Iron Deficiency Causes A Shift In Amp-Activated Protein Kinase (Ampk) Catalytic Subunit Composition In Rat Skeletal Muscle, John Merrill
Iron Deficiency Causes A Shift In Amp-Activated Protein Kinase (Ampk) Catalytic Subunit Composition In Rat Skeletal Muscle, John Merrill
Theses and Dissertations
To determine effects of iron deficiency on AMPK activation and signaling, as well as the AMPKα subunit composition in skeletal muscle, rats were fed a control (C=50-58 mg/kg Fe) or iron deficient (ID=2-6 mg/kg Fe) diet for 6-8 wks. Their respective hematocrits were 47.5% ± 1.0 and 16.5% ± 0.6. Iron deficiency resulted in 28.3% greater muscle fatigue (p<0.01) in response to 10 min of stimulation (1 twitch/sec) and was associated with a greater reduction in phosphocreatine (C: Resting 24.1 ± 0.9 micromol/g, Stim 13.1 ± 1.5 micromol/g; ID: Resting 22.7 ± 1.0 micromol/g, Stim 3.2 ± 0.7 micromol/g; p<0.01) and ATP levels (C: Resting 5.89 ± 0.48 micromol/g, Stim 6.03 ± 0.35 micromol/g; ID: Resting 5.51 ± 0.20 micromol/g, Stim 4.19 ± 0.47 micromol/g; p<0.05). AMPK activation increased with stimulation in muscles of C and ID animals. A reduction in Cytochrome c and other iron-dependent mitochondrial proteins was observed in ID animals (p<0.01). The AMPK catalytic subunit (alpha) was also examined because both isoforms are known to play different roles in responding to energy challenges. In ID animals, AMPK alpha2 subunit protein content was reduced to 71.6% of C (p<0.05), however this did not result in a significant difference in resting AMPK alpha2 activity. AMPK alpha1 protein was unchanged, however an overall increase in AMPK alpha1 activity was observed (C: 0.91 pmol/mg/min; ID: 1.63 pmol/mg/min; p<0.05). Resting phospho Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (pACC) was unchanged. This study indicates that chronic iron deficiency causes a shift in the expression of AMPK alpha subunit composition and potentially altered sensitivity to cellular energy challenges.

An Analysis Of Uriay Culture And Gospel Presentation To The Uriay Tribe, Kaitlin R. Sones
Senior Honors Theses
The Uriay people group in Papua New Guinea is a remote animistic tribe that has just recently heard the Gospel. This people group is just one of the thousands of distinct cultures in this world, many of which have not yet received the good news of Jesus Christ. This thesis opens by analyzing culture and animism and culminates with an ethnographic description of the Uriay tribe based on personal observation and information collected from missionaries who have lived among the Uriay people for over ten years. The purpose of this thesis is to provide research on this remote people group …

Laissez-Faire Individualism And Its Descent Into Ideology In The Us, From The Interwar Period To 1960, Darren Barany
Laissez-Faire Individualism And Its Descent Into Ideology In The Us, From The Interwar Period To 1960, Darren Barany
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The origins of the American conservative movement lie in several strands of political and economic thought. The contemporary narrative about free and unfettered markets, i.e. neoliberalism, had been adopted from the early laissez-faire individualism of the American Old Right. In light of the recent political ascent of “Tea Party Conservatism” in the United States and its misappropriation of laissez-faire ideas, this paper traces the development of this one aspect of the American conservative tradition, what is now commonly referred to as libertarianism.[i]
This article is not meant to be an exhaustive review of laissez-faire individualist thought during this period …
Transmission Of Triticum Mosaic Virus And Its Impact On The Biology Of The Wheat Curl Mite Aceria Tosichella Keifer (Eriophyidae), And An Evaluation Of Management Tactics For The Wheat Curl Mite And The Wheat–Mite–Virus Complex, Anthony J. Mcmechan
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The wheat-mite-virus complex is an important production constraint to winter wheat production in the Great Plains, and consists of three viruses; wheat streak mosaic (WSMV), wheat mosaic (WMoV) and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV). Synergistic interactions between these viruses have resulted in increased rates of replication and transmission of viruses, thus increasing the potential impact on wheat yields. The wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella Keifer is the only known vector of the viruses within the wheat-mite-virus complex.
Currently, three colonies of WCM have been characterized by differential responses to mite resistant genes (biotypes) in wheat and differential transmission of WMoV. …

Expression Of The Pair-Rule Gene Homologs Runt, Pax3/7, Even-Skipped-1 And Even-Skipped-2 During Larval And Juvenile Development Of The Polychaete Annelid Capitella Teleta Does Not Support A Role In Segmentation, Elaine C. Seaver, Emi Yamaguchi, Gemma S. Richards, Néva P. Meyer
Biology
Background: Annelids and arthropods each possess a segmented body. Whether this similarity represents an evolutionary convergence or inheritance from a common segmented ancestor is the subject of ongoing investigation. Methods: To investigate whether annelids and arthropods share molecular components that control segmentation, we isolated orthologs of the Drosophila melanogaster pair-rule genes, runt, paired (Pax3/7) and eve, from the polychaete annelid Capitella teleta and used whole mount in situ hybridization to characterize their expression patterns. Results: When segments first appear, expression of the single C. teleta runt ortholog is only detected in the brain. Later, Ct-runt is expressed in the ventral nerve cord, …
Species Identification And Strain Attribution With Unassembled Sequencing Data, Owen Eric Francis
Species Identification And Strain Attribution With Unassembled Sequencing Data, Owen Eric Francis
Theses and Dissertations
Emerging sequencing approaches have revolutionized the way we can collect DNA sequence data for applications in bioforensics and biosurveillance. In this research, we present an approach to construct a database of known biological agents and use this database to develop a statistical framework to analyze raw reads from next-generation sequence data for species identification and strain attribution. Our method capitalizes on a Bayesian statistical framework that accommodates information on sequence quality, mapping quality and provides posterior probabilities of matches to a known database of target genomes. Importantly, our approach also incorporates the possibility that multiple species can be present in …
Neuromusicology And Combat-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury, Brittany L. Neuser
Neuromusicology And Combat-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury, Brittany L. Neuser
Honors Theses
The number of reported cases of combat-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) among American veterans is rapidly increasing. The results of TBI are often a combination of deficits in cognitive, physical, emotional, and behavioral functions. Each case poses unique challenges for all involved—soldiers, their families, and health care personnel. Though each case is unique, common symptoms include impaired gross and fine motor, speech and language, memory, attention, visual, auditory, and emotional functioning (Davis, Gfeller, Thaut, 2008).
Due to the holistic nature of TBI symptoms, finding an effective yet cost-efficient treatment modality proves to be a difficult task. Previous research has suggested …
An Analysis Of Virginia Transfer Policy And Articulation Agreements: A Comparative Study Of Community College Transfer And Native Students--Enrollments And Outcomes In A Teacher Preparation Program, Michael C. Huffman
Theses and Dissertations
Transfer articulation is an important policy issue in Virginia. With increasing economic strains on federal and state budgets, pressure on key actors in higher education, and critical teacher shortages, an opportunity presented itself to investigate state transfer policy and articulation agreements designed to facilitate student transfer. Articulation agreements are policy instruments designed to facilitate a seamless transfer of both students and credits from the community college system into senior institutions. Over the last decade increased articulation activity has taken place in the Commonwealth of Virginia driven by higher education costs and articulation specific to teacher preparation due to teacher shortages. …
