The research conducted is based upon an in-depth literature review of green purchasing and sustainability initiatives. With an ever increasing global economy with no intention of slowing down it is ever important to look towards sustainability practices and the biggest impact organizations can make is in the purchasing department. The researcher begins by explaining their …

Three Dimensional In Vitro Model Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Anna Bulysheva Apr 2012

Three Dimensional In Vitro Model Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Anna Bulysheva

Theses and Dissertations

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are among the leading causes of cancer related deaths throughout the world. The survival rate for this type of cancer is extremely low and has not changed significantly in recent decades. There is an imperative need to study tumor progression in a representative model in order to generate more knowledge about this disease as well as develop more effective treatment options. Multiple methods already exist for studying HNSCC and other types of cancers, including in vitro and in vivo models. Although in vivo models are more representative of the human carcinomas in terms …

Nutrient Mass Balance And Performance Of Feedlot Cattle Fed Barley Based Diets In Large Pens In Western Canada, Erin M. Hussey Apr 2012

Nutrient Mass Balance And Performance Of Feedlot Cattle Fed Barley Based Diets In Large Pens In Western Canada, Erin M. Hussey

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Three separate large pen commercial feeding trials with approximately 9,000 heifers with either eight or ten reps/treatment were conducted at a Western Feedlots Ltd.- High River, a commercial feedyard near High River, AB, Canada. For all three experiments, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to segregate feed barley. In Exp. 1, barley was segregated based on digestible energy (DE) content as predicted by NIRS and heifers were fed low or high DE barley, or a 50:50 blend of the two. Feeding low DE barley improved weight gain, dry matter intake (DMI), and mortality; with little effect on carcass composition compared …

Towards Monitoring Of The Anesthetic Drug Propofol: Design, Development, And Characterization Of An Automated Flow Analytical System, Felynncia Renee Rainey Apr 2012

Towards Monitoring Of The Anesthetic Drug Propofol: Design, Development, And Characterization Of An Automated Flow Analytical System, Felynncia Renee Rainey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic drug commonly used for the maintenance of sedation for critically ill patients in the ICU. Current standard dosing paradigms, which use weight, age, and sex to determine dosage amounts, are not universal to all patients. Consequently, some patients may be under-sedated, while others may be over-sedated. Patient under-sedation can affect patient comfort, proper patient-ventilator synchronization, and blood oxygenation. Patient over-sedation can result in the development of Propofol Infusion Syndrome (PRIS). PRIS can cause many physiological dysfunctions, even death, especially in children. To address this issue, an electrochemical propofol sensor and an automated flow analytical system …

Influence Of Early Intervention Career Exploration On Student Persistence, Ben Littlepage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The study examined whether 181 academically underprepared, first-time freshmen were found to increase persistence and academic achievement due to the early intervention of a career exploration assessment. Persistence was defined as continuous, active enrollment from Fall 2010 to Fall 2011. Academic achievement was defined as grade point average. The study site was a rural community college located in northwest Tennessee where household poverty was high, educational attainment was low and 70 percent of first-time freshmen had a remedial education need in 2010. Pre-existing characteristics and the level of academic preparedness for each participant were collected. Participants were purposefully sampled by …

Building A Legacy Of Hope Against Ovarian Cancer

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

Cancer – let alone a rare form of ovarian cancer – wasn’t on Sandy Parvin’s radar when her 11-year-old daughter Sarah was nauseous and vomiting for a few days in the spring of 2005.

“Honestly, we thought she had the flu,” Sandy said. The virus had been going around so Sandy took her daughter to their family physician.

The doctor sent Sarah to the hospital to get some IV fluids. It quickly turned into a parent’s worst nightmare. Sarah was put on a heart monitor and four physicians were there asking questions. Her calcium levels were far too high.

“They …

Jefferson Researchers Identify Potential Diagnostic, Prognostic Tools For Pancreatic Cancer

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

When it comes to diagnosing and treating cancer, early detection is important. While other cancers can be identified through routine screenings, pancreatic cancer has been notoriously difficult to diagnose early. After pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, the optimal course of treatment is not always clear.

Hwyda Arafat, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and co-director of the Jefferson Pancreatic, Biliary and Related Cancers Center, and Jordan M. Winter, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, are working to change that.

Together with Mon-Li Chu, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology, Dr. Arafat …
