Time For Learning: Understanding Students’ Perspectives Toward Learning In Expanded Learning Time Reform, Kris A. Monahan
Time For Learning: Understanding Students’ Perspectives Toward Learning In Expanded Learning Time Reform, Kris A. Monahan
Open Access Dissertations
Learning takes time, but providing time does not in itself ensure that learning will take place (Carroll, 1963; Stallings & Kaskowitz, 1974; Anderson, 1981; Aronson, Zimmer & Carlos, 1999; Berliner, 1990; Kidder et. al., 1975). We need to examine more closely how students are using time and which conditions maximize student engagement. As schools continue to struggle with meeting state and national standards using traditional educational pedagogies and structures, whole school reforms are often implemented to improve student learning and success. While several studies have attempted to begin this exploration, few, if any, actually ask students about their experiences, perspectives, …

Leadership And Management In Second Generation Medium-Size Family Businesses: A Comparative Study, Gonzalo Gonzalez-Serna
Theses and Dissertations
A research study was conducted among 10 second generation owners of medium-size family businesses in Mexico to gain a better understanding of how their firms were founded and of how these business owners have succeeded in growing their companies and keeping their business alive for more than 40 years. Literature from leadership, management, and family business was reviewed to analyze the existing research on the topic. The literature review revealed that many authors have addressed similar issues, but from different perspectives. This study presents the experiences of a group of second generation business owners in great detail, focusing on their …
Romancing Organizational Leadership: A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality, Maturity, National Culture, And Romance Of Leadership In A Multinational Organization, Vu Nguyen Tran
Theses and Dissertations
Romance of Leadership is a disposition to over-attribute organizational and societal outcomes to the actions of senior level leaders. The greater the magnitude of the outcome, the stronger the belief that leadership is the most significant driving force behind that outcome. Strong believers are found to be more susceptible to the emergence of transformational and despotic leadership. The tendency to romanticize leadership cannot be eliminated but needs to be understood, accounted for, and hopefully managed, by aspiring leaders. This study found that romance of leadership is a pervasive and durable phenomenon that is rooted in human personality, and shaped by …
A Good Story Changes Everything, Daraunda Bryant
A Good Story Changes Everything, Daraunda Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Although applied in organizational settings, storytelling is not commonly used or understood in change efforts. Furthermore, storytelling's impact on changing organizational culture has not been widely examined. This study therefore sought to answer the question: What is the effect of stories on culture change? Twenty-five participants (4 managers and 21 associates) completed one-on-one, in-person interviews prior to a storytelling workshop. All associates attended the storytelling workshop, followed by interviews of all four managers and four randomly selected associates regarding culture change. This study found that storytelling, in particular the storytelling workshop, influenced the behaviors and attitudes of organizational members and, …

Using Appreciative Inquiry In The 360-Degree Survey Feedback Process For Leaders, Aaron C. Herbert
Theses and Dissertations
This study identified how an appreciative 360-degree leader survey enhanced the feedback process for leaders. The qualitative study was conducted at a 1500-member Protestant church in Virginia. The two senior-most leaders (pastor and executive associate pastor) were evaluated by 10 subordinates. Examination of the impact of the appreciative process on the implementation and use of survey results identified risks, benefits, and suggested interventions. The study found that the appreciative process generally enhanced subordinates' willingness to participate, although some concerns did arise. Pastors and subordinates stated they did not have sufficient time to absorb the feedback or to identify deliberate action …

An Exploratory Study Of Work-Related Imagined Interactions With Real-Life Coworkers, Paula Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Communication between individuals in social systems includes not only interpersonal, external acts of discourse, but also intrapersonal communications within each person's interior cognitive space. One type of intrapersonal communication, imagined interactions, involves mentally imagining communication encounters with others in an internal dialogue symbolic of real-life conversations. This research project explored the phenomenon of imagined interactions with real-life coworkers as a component of the interior work lives of working adults. The research question was: How do supervisors utilize imagined interactions to make sense of and manage workplace relationships? An existing survey instrument, the Survey of Imagined Interactions, was modified to limit …
Person-Centered Planning In Gaurdianship: A Little Hope For The Future, A. Frank Johns
Person-Centered Planning In Gaurdianship: A Little Hope For The Future, A. Frank Johns
Utah Law Review
This Article has examined the potential for person-centered planning within the American system of guardianship. Guardians’ current exercise of authority is not person-centered because it gives little attention to the person of those relegated to its paternalistic protections. Person-centered planning, though, may be a solution to this problem. This Article explained how person-centered planning can be incorporated in guardianship and included three case studies using person-centered tools in assessing the wants and needs of clients being served. Finally, this Article examined the extent to which the UGPPA and some states have incorporated person-centered planning into guardianship.

Participation And Attrition In Youth Sport, Laura Sue Rowen
Graduate Research Papers
In the United States, an estimated 45 million children under the age of 18 years are involved in school and extracurricular physical activity programs, ranging from youth basketball and baseball to cross country skiing and rodeo (Weinberg & Gould, 2007). According to the American Journal of Diseases of Children, an additional 17 million children and adolescents in the US participate in an organized non-school-sponsored sport (DuRant et al., 1991). Many of these children are extremely involved in organized sport. On average, youth participate in their specific sport 11 hours a week for an 18-week season. Thus, over the past 40 …
Louisiana Social Workers: A Study On Attitudes Toward Lgbt Youth, Rachel Kathleen O'Pry
Louisiana Social Workers: A Study On Attitudes Toward Lgbt Youth, Rachel Kathleen O'Pry
LSU Master's Theses
Social workers in most professional practice settings will encounter young clients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). It is therefore important that variables influencing levels of homophobia and transphobia among these workers be analyzed. In this study, the author sought to examine the attitudes and perceptions of social workers in Louisiana toward LGBT youth. These attitudes and perceptions were then compared to individual variables such as religion, previous training on sexual orientation and gender identity, and race. The Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI), Genderism and Transphobia Scale (GTS), and Heterosexual Attitudes Toward Homosexuals (HATH) scale were completed by …

Repositioning Community-Based Family Planning In Ghana: A Case Study Of Community-Based Health Planning And Services (Chps), Stephen Ntsua, Placide Tapsoba, Gloria Quansah Asare, Frank K. Nyonator
Reproductive Health
The Population Council conducted a diagnostic appraisal of delivering family planning services using the community-based health planning and services (CHPS model) in Ghana. This study’s results indicate that the CHPS program is well appreciated by rural communities where it is operational. However, the study identified several developments with implications for service delivery: increased community health officer (CHO) workloads and concomitant reductions in outreach services and home visits by community health visitors (CHVs) have weakened the CHO-CHV working relationship, leaving both cadres working in isolation. CHPS has significantly improved health indices but its contribution to increasing family planning is limited and …

Begun in 2001, the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) was created by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) as a means of improving the leadership abilities of faculty, staff, and administrative personnel throughout the system, a “grow your own” leadership program (Leadership Development, 2006). LDI has evolved into a nine-month program of presentations, lectures, mentoring, self-exploration activities, and internships. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the impact of participation in LDI on the career and educational goals of former cohort members. Phase One of this research project, the qualitative portion of the study, was composed …

As the issue of employee turnover becomes a hot topic, issues such as high commitments of employees and their attitude towards the organizations are being addressed. Studies showed that employees who are committed to their …

Power Relationships Shaping Organisational Learning For Volatility And Instability: Authentic Or Compliant?, Lindsay Garratt, Paul Jackson
Power Relationships Shaping Organisational Learning For Volatility And Instability: Authentic Or Compliant?, Lindsay Garratt, Paul Jackson
Research outputs 2012
We live in times of great economic and social volatility, where higher levels of innovation and improvement are demanded of business and individuals than ever before. Emancipatory organisational learning offers great potential for freeing people’s minds to truly imagine for the future, but as a reality it proves elusive. This paper presents a model of three power relationships which create learning spaces that are either ‘liberated’ or ‘managed’ and subsequently organisational learning that is ‘authentic’ or ‘compliant’. ‘Authentic’ learning is important if the creative energies and resources within organisations are to be fully engaged and mobilised in times of volatility …
Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley
Cultural Humility: A Framework For Local And Global Engagement, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek, Scot Headley
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Many institutions of higher education have implemented local and global engagement opportunities as a way to expose both students and faculty to different cultures and further their knowledge of those cultures. One of the primary goals of these cultural experiences is for students and faculty to become more culturally competent. However, it is possible that our current way of thinking and promoting cultural competency within education specifically may not go deep enough and could be considered limiting in the ways we partner, collaborate, and interact with people groups different than ourselves. Cultural humility, a construct currently accepted in some professional …

Leadership In Private Christian Schools: Perceptions Of Administrators, Suzanne Harrison
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to discover the perceptions of private Christian school administrators about leadership characteristics, roles, and teacher professional development. The co-researchers first conducted a demographic survey and focus group interviews with six administrators from K-12 or secondary private Christian schools in Oregon and Washington. Themes that surfaced from the data were who we are as leaders, success and celebration, and what we do as leaders. Results showed that administrators of private Christian schools tended to focus on the importance of the vision and mission of their schools, keeping in mind their influence as spiritual …

Identifying Dimensions Of Montana Tribal Community Capacity In Relation To The Funding Application Process, Maja R. Pedersen
Identifying Dimensions Of Montana Tribal Community Capacity In Relation To The Funding Application Process, Maja R. Pedersen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Foundations and government agencies have historically played a critical role in supporting community-based health promotion programs (Easterling, Gallagher & Lodwich, 2003). Despite availability of federal and state funding for health promotion efforts within American Indian reservation communities in Montana, tribal communities in the state are less likely than non-tribal communities to successfully apply for funding for health and social services (Lonsdale, T., personal communication, April 1, 2011). Increased access to health promotion funding may help address significant health issues existing within American Indian communities such as childhood obesity, diabetes type 2, and cardiovascular disease (Ogden, Flegal, Carroll & Johnson, 2002; …

Does Information Technology Investment Influences Firm’S Market Value? The Case Of Non-Publicly Traded Healthcare Firms, Rajiv Kohli, Sarv Devaraj, Terence T. Ow
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Managers make informed information technology investment decisions when they are able to quantify how IT contributes to firm performance. While financial accounting measures inform IT’s influence on retrospective firm performance, senior managers expect evidence of how IT influences prospective measures such as the firm’s market value. We examine the efficacy of IT’s influence on firm value combined with measures of financial performance for non-publicly traded (NPT) hospitals that lack conventional market-based measures. We gathered actual sale transactions for NPT hospitals in the United States to derive the q ratio, a measure of market value. Our findings indicate that the influence …

Measuring Employee Perceptions Of Organizational Tolerance For Failure, Perla Yael Slutzky
Master's Theses
The empirical concept of Organizational Tolerance for Organizational Failure was examined. First, a clear definition of the concept was established and, second, the concept's dimensionality was explored. Based on data collected from 140 participants, four main scale components were identified: Organizational Values and Beliefs, Organizational and Supervisor Support and Motivation, Compensation and Reward Systems, and Recognition. Even though the final scale developed represented a good research base, further development is needed to improve some of the subscale's internal consistencies.

Who Framed Silicon Valley And Hollywood: Newspaper Coverage Of Regional Business Clusters In The San Francisco Bay Area And Southern California, Frank Michael Russell
Master's Theses
This study involved coverage of Silicon Valley technology companies and Hollywood entertainment companies in the San Jose Mercury News, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune. Previous work has suggested that newspaper coverage decisions are influenced by the communities that news organizations serve, journalistic values that can favor corporate interests, and the work of experienced framers of media messages. Silicon Valley and Hollywood are two well-known examples of regional industrial agglomerations, which are clusters of adjacent related businesses that are a powerful form of organization for the deployment of capital and labor. California's technology and entertainment companies have developed strong geographical …

Central University Libraries Research
Southern Methodist University’s libraries and central IT staff have been working hand in hand for more than 30 years to provide high quality information technology tools in support of the University’s academic mission. The technology might change, the players might change, but the commitment of these two units goes above and beyond to serve University goals. Not intended to document every technological change on campus, this article focuses on the various stages in this fruitful relationship, and explores the organizational, cultural and environmental factors that have sustained this strategic alliance and fostered its growth over the years.
