Deletion Of Polyphosphate Kinase Gene (Ppk)Has A Stimulatory Effect On Actinorhodin Production By Streptomyces Coelicolor A3(2), İrem Yalim Camci, Tuğrul Doruk, Ümmehan Avi̇can, Sedef Tunca Gedi̇k
Turkish Journal of Biology
Polyphosphate, which is synthesized by the enzyme polyP kinase (PPK), is an important energy and phosphate storage polymer that plays a crucial role in the regulation of adaptive responses of cells to physical and chemical stresses. In this work, the polyphosphate kinase gene (ppk) of Streptomyces coelicolor was deleted, and the effect of this mutation on actinorhodin and undecylprodigiosin biosynthesis was investigated. Deletion of the ppk gene had a stimulatory effect on actinorhodin production; the mutant strain produced about 5 times more antibiotic compared to the wild type strain at 120 h of growth. There was no difference in undecylprodigiosin …

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of spiritual support on Alzheimer’s caregiver’s perceived burden. This study will examine the relationship between spiritual support and burden among Alzheimer’s caregivers. The collection of data was accomplished by a packet of surveys mailed to Alzheimer’s caregivers. For this study the population is separated and difficult to survey as a whole, therefore, a smaller cluster sample is surveyed from a specific organization. The global score of the burden measure is negatively correlated with the global score of the Spiritual Support Scale. In this study, spiritual support is not the sole …
Development Of A Frozen Yogurt Fortified With A Nano-Emulsion Containing Purple Rice Bran Oil, Luis Alonso Alfaro Sanabria
Development Of A Frozen Yogurt Fortified With A Nano-Emulsion Containing Purple Rice Bran Oil, Luis Alonso Alfaro Sanabria
LSU Master's Theses
The U.S. frozen dessert business, including retail and foodservice markets, is the largest in the world. There is a need for deserts that offer better nutritional attributes, such as antioxidants than traditional deserts. Purple rice bran oil (PRBO) is an excellent source of natural antioxidants including tocopherol, tocotrienol, and oryzanol. Adding nano-emulsions of purple rice bran oil (NPRBO) to many products including frozen yogurts (FY) will improve the nutritional profile of the product by substantially increasing the natural antioxidant content. This fortification may have the potential to broaden the FY market. The objectives of this study were to develop and …

Excess protein in dairy cattle diets unnecessarily increases the cost of production and may contribute to environmental pollution. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of feeding dairy cows with two levels of dietary protein on animal performance and manure characteristics. Two experiments were carried out with 24 lactating dairy cows each. Experiment 1 was corn silage based and had a control TMR (HP1) estimated to contain 16.5% CP with SBM and treatment TMR (LP1; 13.5% CP) using DDGS and rumen protected Lys and Met. Experiment 2 was ryegrass haylage based and had a control TMR (HP2) …
Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner
Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner
LSU Master's Theses
I sought to assess the enhancement potential of mimic artificial oyster reefs (MAORs) on trophic dynamics of juvenile estuarine fishes in marsh ponds. Tropic dynamics were investigated by determining the impacts of MAOR addition on meiofauna and macrofauna and then comparing these results to the gut contents and condition of four abundant estuarine fishes: Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), bay whiff (Citharichthys spilopterus), sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius), and pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides). Samples were collected every other month for two years (March 2009 – 11) employing a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design. Halfway through the experiment (March 2010), two mud sites in two marsh …

Over the past century, the growth in petrochemical manufacturing within Louisiana’s Upper Industrial Corridor brought economic development, but also introduced toxic emissions and environmental exposure risks to residents of the area. For the citizens living in close proximity to multiple facilities there is the added risk of chemical exposure from environmentally hazardous accidents. This study seeks to gain insights into patterns of risk-reducing behaviors of residents in East Baton Rouge Parish so that better educational outreach programs can be developed. This research addresses the following questions: To what extent are residents of Baton Rouge taking steps to reduce environmental exposure …
Evaluation Of Pleistocene To Holocene (Mis 5 To 1) Climatic Changes In Southwestern Black Sea: A Palynological Study Of Dsdp Site 380, Shannon Ferguson
Evaluation Of Pleistocene To Holocene (Mis 5 To 1) Climatic Changes In Southwestern Black Sea: A Palynological Study Of Dsdp Site 380, Shannon Ferguson
LSU Master's Theses
Site 380 of the Deep Sea Drilling Program [DSDP] is located in the southwestern region of the Black Sea (42°05.94’, 29°36.82’E). The location of this site is important due to its proximity to the narrow Bosphorus strait, the only present-day connection between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. Drops in eustatic sea level during extensive Pleistocene glacial episodes disconnected the Black Sea from the Aegean Sea at the Bosphorus strait, creating a change from brackish to freshwater within the Black Sea during these intervals. Organic-walled phytoplankton (dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs, and fresh-water algae) are investigated to better constrain these glacio-eustatic …

Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks In High Elevation Whitebark Pine Forests: The Effects Of Tree Host Species And Blister Rust Infection Severity On Beetle Productivity, Edith Mary Dooley
Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks In High Elevation Whitebark Pine Forests: The Effects Of Tree Host Species And Blister Rust Infection Severity On Beetle Productivity, Edith Mary Dooley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In recent years, the mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae) has caused dramatic levels of mortality of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). This keystone and foundation tree species is also being killed by the exotic fungus, Cronartium ribicola, which causes the disease white pine blister rust (WPBR). This study examines MPB productivity in whitebark pine compared to that in lodgepole pine, and also in whitebark pine of varying WPBR infection severities to determine if either of these host factors contributes to the current, dramatic MPB outbreaks in whitebark pine. To evaluate host tree effects on MPB, I tracked attack densities, emergence …
Pig (Sus Scrofa) Exploitation At Hallan Çemi, Southeastern Anatolia: Proposing An Alternative Model, Ximena Lemoine
Pig (Sus Scrofa) Exploitation At Hallan Çemi, Southeastern Anatolia: Proposing An Alternative Model, Ximena Lemoine
University Honors Theses
Hallan Çemi presents itself as a unique site to study the transitional period before the onset of agriculture in the Near East. The site fails to fit nicely into demographic or environmental models that have widely been accepted for the region. Hallan Çemi thus represents the potential to study innovative human strategies for subsistence, and to provide insight into the processes that led to the eventual adoption of agriculture only a few millennia later. Richard Redding and Michael Rosenberg presented one such innovative strategy for pig exploitation at this site with their New Guinean model (Redding and Rosenberg 1998; Rosenberg …

Well-organized conversation can improve people’s ability to comprehend and retain information. As part of a long-term effort to adapt Quality Improvement techniques for communication, we developed an explicit criteria method to assess usage of three organizing behaviors (OBs): ‘opening behaviors’ to establish goals; ‘structuring behaviors’ to guide patients through conversation; and ‘emphasizing behaviors’ that signal a need for attention. Pairs of abstractors independently reviewed transcripts in a demonstration sample of conversations between physicians and standardized parents after newborn screening identifies carrier status for sickle cell disease. Criteria for at least one OB were identified in 50/84 transcripts (60%), including 27 …
Forecasting Terrorism: The Need For A More Systematic Approach, Edwin Bakker
Forecasting Terrorism: The Need For A More Systematic Approach, Edwin Bakker
Journal of Strategic Security
This article analyzes a unique branch of terrorism literature—terrorism futures—by academics, think tanks, and governmental agencies published between 2000 and 2012. To this end, it examines over sixty publications that attempt to discern possible futures of terrorism. In general, the track record of forecasting terrorism has not been good. This is particularly true for major changes in the modus operandi of terrorism, the attacks on 9/11 being a case in point. The analyses of the future of terrorism shows an absence of methodologies, and the lack of theoretical foundations, which lead to limited insights about the causes of changes in …
Anti-Stereotyping And "The End Of Men", Barbara Stark
Anti-Stereotyping And "The End Of Men", Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
As scholars have recently shown, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s earliest sex discrimination work was grounded in anti-stereotyping theory. The particular stereotype she challenged was that of males as breadwinners and females as homemakers. As Cary Franklin notes, Justice Ginsburg’s approach was grounded in “constitutional limits on the state’s power to enforce sex-role stereotypes.” While Justice Ginsburg herself has come to realize that anti- stereotyping may not suffice to combat sex discrimination, her early focus on the ways in which stereotyping affects men, specifically men who did not fit the breadwinner stereotype, and her argument that only state-sanctioned stereotypes are constitutionally …
Investigating The Potential Existence Of Endophytic Bacteria In Early Stage Maize Kernels, Matthew Anderson
Investigating The Potential Existence Of Endophytic Bacteria In Early Stage Maize Kernels, Matthew Anderson
Theses & ETDs
Endophytic bacteria reside inside of a host plant for part of or all of their life cycle without causing any apparent symptoms of disease. Most endophytes have a symbiotic relationship with their host, offering benefits such as increased nutrient uptake, stimulated phytohormone production, or improved resistance to pathogens and toxins. Endophytic bacteria have been well studied in various tissues of many different crops, but their potential presence has not been investigated in maize kernels at early developmental stages. The aims of this thesis research were to investigate the potential existence of endophytic bacterial communities in Zea mays L. (maize) kernels …
The Distribution Of Cyphoma Gibbosum (Mollusca Gastropoda: Cypraeoidea: Ovulidae) (The Flamingo Tongue Gastropod) In Relation To The Presence Of The Fungal Disease Aspergillosis On Gorgonia Spp. (Anthozoa: Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Gorgoniidae), Julie Christina Krzykwa
Theses & ETDs
The fungal disease Aspergillosis has been an ongoing epizootic in the Caribbean since its identification in 1995. Further investigation into the environmental or biological vectors of Aspergillosis is of great interest, as this disease has had a considerable impact on coral reefs in the Caribbean. The gastropod Cyphoma gibbosum is able to pass viable spores of Aspergillus sydowii (Ascomycota: Eurotiomycetes: Eurotiales: Trichocomaceae), the fungus thought to cause the disease, and previous field studies noted an increased presence of C. gibbosum during Aspergillosis outbreaks. These observations suggest that C. gibbosum may be a biological vector of Aspergillosis. This study looked at …
Evaluation Of Algae Concentration In Manure Based Media, Maira Freire Pecegueiro Do Amaral
Evaluation Of Algae Concentration In Manure Based Media, Maira Freire Pecegueiro Do Amaral
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Algae can be used to treat wastewater and manure while producing a feedstock for renewable energy. Algae require nutrients to achieve their maximum growth and manure could provide those nutrients, thereby reducing the cost of algae production and the impact of manure treatment. Algae concentration during cultivation is a critical variable that is difficult to measure due to the high concentration of suspended solids present in manure. This dissertation addresses methods to measure algae concentration in the presence of manure solids.
Quantifying the algae concentration gravimetrically or by optical density was unreliable due to manure solids interfering with the measurement. …

The Impact Of Water Supply And Sanitation On Child Health: Evidence From Egypt, Rania Roushdy, Maia Sieverding, Hanan Radwan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, this working paper investigates whether access to improved sources of water and sanitation is an effective “treatment” for the incidence of diarrhea among children under five years of age in Egypt. Both components of the study indicate that widespread access to improved sources of drinking water and toilet facilities exists across Egypt; however, service quality remains a significant problem in many areas. In particular, cuts in water supply—and the resulting practice of storing water—are quite common; a sizable percentage of flush toilet facilities are not connected to the public sewer system; and …
