Poverty, Gender, and Youth

coverage seems to have become overshadowed. This paper will inquire into what makes Gardasil different from other vaccines, and how that impacts its administration. Part I will describe the specifics of the HPV vaccine: how it works and how Virginia decided to promote its usage. Part II will examine the ways in which jurisdictions have traditionally understood vaccination policy, and contrast it with the ways in which they have handled the HPV vaccine. Part III will examine the disadvantages of continuing the mandate's ineffective political war of attrition, and suggest a coalition-building strategy to effect policy that honors communal values …

How Shall The Constitution Be Enforced? A Preview Of Minneci V. Pollard, John F. Preis

Law Faculty Publications

Professor Preis discusses Minneci v. Pollard, a case he argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of his client (Pollard), a federal prisoner who had brought a civil rights action for various forms of mistreatment in alleged violation of the Eighth Amendment. He outlines his and Pollard's contention that federal courts should enforce the civil rights of prisoners without regard to the availability of equivalent tort relief under state common law.

Optimal Cultural Practices For Processed Sweetpotato Products, Cody Derek Smith Jan 2012

Optimal Cultural Practices For Processed Sweetpotato Products, Cody Derek Smith

LSU Master's Theses

As the sweetpotato industry moves towards more processed products, there is a need to develop strategies in which to optimize total yield and reduce costs. Unlike the fresh market product, desirable processing roots are larger in size and overall tonnage is preferred over aesthetic appeal. Plant spacing and row width along with planting dates and harvest dates are believed to affect the size and tonnage of sweetpotato roots. The Beauregard and Evangeline varieties were planted at an early planting date (June 1) and a late planting date (July 1) on 38 and 42 inch row spacing. Harvests were at ~125 …

What Determines The Temporal Changes Of Species Degree And Strength In An Oceanic Island Plant-Disperser Network?, Aaron González-Castro, Suann Yang, Manuel Nogales, Tomas A. Carlo Jan 2012

What Determines The Temporal Changes Of Species Degree And Strength In An Oceanic Island Plant-Disperser Network?, Aaron González-Castro, Suann Yang, Manuel Nogales, Tomas A. Carlo

Biology

Network models of frugivory and seed dispersal are usually static. To date, most studies on mutualistic networks assert that interaction properties such as species' degree (k) and strength (s) are strongly influenced by species abundances. We evaluated how species' degree and strength change as a function of temporal variation not only in species abundance, but also in species persistence (i.e., phenology length). In a two-year study, we collected community-wide data on seed dispersal by birds and examined the seasonal dynamics of the above-mentioned interaction properties. Our analyses revealed that species abundance is an important predictor for plant strength within a …

Habitat- And Region-Specific Reproductive Biology Of Female Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) In The Gulf Of Mexico, Dannielle Helen Kulaw

LSU Master's Theses

This study compares reproductive biology estimates of female red snapper among three habitat types (natural shelf-edge banks, standing petroleum platforms and toppled petroleum platforms) and among six regions in the Gulf of Mexico (central Florida, northwest Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, north Texas and south Texas). In both studies, batch fecundity and spawning frequency increased with length, weight and age, and batch fecundity was best correlated with maternal length. Gulf-wide, 75% maturity was achieved by age-3 and 100% maturity was reached by age-8. Sizes- and ages-at-maturity differed among habitat types and regions. Females from natural habitat reached 50% maturity the slowest (age-5, …

Use Of Expanded Shales, Clays And Slates-Light Weight Aggregate For Erosion Control And Grass Establishment On Un-Vegetated Embankments, Murilo De Santana Martins Jan 2012

Use Of Expanded Shales, Clays And Slates-Light Weight Aggregate For Erosion Control And Grass Establishment On Un-Vegetated Embankments, Murilo De Santana Martins

LSU Master's Theses

High salinity concentrations in soils used to renovation and construct levees adversely affect levee’s performance due to increased susceptibility for erosion problems. Dispersion of the soil particles caused by salts and seal formation affect levee structure stabilization and vegetation establishment is impaired due to lower water infiltration capacity in levees; and high osmotic pressure exerted by salts reducing water availability for seed germination leaving levee surface prone to severe rilling and soil loss from runoff erosion. The objectives of this research were determine if expanded shales, clays, and slates-light weight aggregate (ESCS-LWA) over clay reduces erosion and evaluate how ESCS-LWA …

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao Jan 2012

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which are not readily available for conversion in their native form. It is widely accepted that lignin acts as the “glue” that binds cellulose and hemicellulose, giving rigidity and resistance to lignocellulose. The use of non-ionic surfactants during pretreatment can help alter the structure of lignocellulosic biomass to improve cellulose digestibility and ethanol yields. Tween 80, Tween 20, PEG 4000, or PEG 6000 was used with ammonium hydroxide for the pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse. The pretreatment was carried out by mixing sugarcane bagasse, ammonium hydroxide (28% v/v) and water at a …

Today there are more than 140,000 members in the sanctioning body for triathlon. However, there is little descriptive data about this group of athletes. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to describe the demographics, training habits, nutritional practices, injury occurrence and overall health status of triathletes and identify any differences between two studies that collected this information. The secondary purpose was to examine any significant correlations among the major outcome variables in the LSU study. METHODS: …

Complex Interactions Between Marine Sponges And Their Symbiotic Microbial Communities, Christopher John Freeman Jan 2012

Complex Interactions Between Marine Sponges And Their Symbiotic Microbial Communities, Christopher John Freeman

All ETDs from UAB

Microbial communities spanning nearly all evolutionary lineages of bacteria and archaea are found within many species of marine sponges. Although diverse microbial metabolic pathways may benefit sponge hosts, minimal experimental evidence exists supporting host assimilation of symbiont-derived nutrients. By coupling manipulative shading experiments with stable isotope analyses of isolated microbial and sponge cell fractions, I provide evidence that some sponge hosts assimilate a large proportion of their C and N from microbial symbionts and that these inputs are crucial to host performance. Interestingly, however, these interactions are highly variable across host species, suggesting that overall symbiont abundance alone does not …

Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Genetic Admixture, Parental Feeding Practices, And The School Food Environment, Michelle Cardel Jan 2012

Childhood Obesity: The Role Of Genetic Admixture, Parental Feeding Practices, And The School Food Environment, Michelle Cardel

All ETDs from UAB

Disentangling the etiology of pediatric obesity continues to challenge researchers due to the interconnecting of behavioral, physiological, environmental, and genetic factors. Studies have focused on the role of the obesogenic environment, characterized by excess energy intake and sedentary behavior, as it relates to weight and fat gain in children. Although these factors certainly have an impact on fat accumulation, increased energy intake and decreased physical activity do not solely account for the increasing trends in obesity prevalence. Less explored genetic and environmental factors may contribute independently and/or synergistically to the current obesity epidemic, and that, these factors could vary in …

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards Jan 2012

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards

LSU Master's Theses

A common method used by consumers to determine if shrimp are thoroughly cooked when boiling, is to wait until the shrimp float to the top of the water and are pink in color. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the current floating and color cooking method is adequate to ensure the elimination of Listeria and Salmonella species. Furthermore, to determine if processing and storage methods reduce the effectiveness of this method. Shrimp samples were submerged into bacterial suspensions for 30 min then allowed to air dry for 1 hr and color parameters were measured using a colorimeter. …

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg Jan 2012

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg

LSU Master's Theses

Cold seep mussels, Bathymodiolus childressi, are common cold seep constituents that form large populations at upper continental slope (500-1000 m) cold seep sites in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. These mussels utilize methane present through symbiotic relationships with methanotrophic bacteria. This study uses a coupled isotope technique to determine the relative incorporation of respiratory carbon in the shell as a measure of the availability of methane between different seep sites. This method indicates a higher abundance of methane at the Brine Pool site than at the Bush Hill site which appears significantly more resource limited and that changes in methane …

METHODS: Twenty-four subjects (17 females, 7 males; 21 + 0.3 years old) were assigned to one of two groups: 1) endurance (E; n = 12), or 2) active control (AC; n = 12). The E group completed …

A Novel Rna Extraction Method For Cyanobacteria, Zenghui Zhang Jan 2012

A Novel Rna Extraction Method For Cyanobacteria, Zenghui Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Research on production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by microorganisms has captured attention over the last two decades, since PHA have similar properties as petroleum-based thermoplastics, yet are close to carbon neutral and made from renewable sources. Cyanobacteria are considered to be good PHA producers because of their simple nutrient requirements (mainly water, sunlight and CO2) and fast cell growth. However, knowledge of metabolisms behind PHA production by cyanobacteria is limited. Therefore, gene expression analysis of cyanobacteria is required to get a thorough understanding at the molecular level, and gene expression analysis requires the extraction of high quality RNA. Extracting high quality …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Methoxyfenozide On Louisiana, Texas And The Mid-Southern Soybean Looper Populations, Sebe Anthony Brown

LSU Master's Theses

The soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is a defoliating insect pest of soybean in the Mid-South and Texas. In 2008, Louisiana producers reported unsatisfactory control of soybean loopers in soybean with methoxyfenozide. In 2009 and 2010, field collections from Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi and Texas were exposed to discriminating concentrations (0.020 to 5.000 ai ìg/ml) of methoxyfenozide in diet incorporation bioassays. All field colonies were compared to a reference strain LC50 of 0.007 ìg/ml for 2009 and 0.008 ìg/ml for 2010. Louisiana populations exhibited LC50’s of 0.079 ìg/ml and 0.122 ìg/ml for 2009 and 2010, respectively, which were the highest values …

Vacuum Tumbling For The Incorporation Of Phosphates In Gulf Shrimp., Matthew Daryl Cael Jan 2012

Vacuum Tumbling For The Incorporation Of Phosphates In Gulf Shrimp., Matthew Daryl Cael

LSU Master's Theses

A processing method for shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico region is to place mechanically peeled shrimp in plastic bags in a retail box and add a mixture of water, sodium chloride, and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). The box is then placed in frozen storage. As the shrimp and solution freeze, there is a potential for the shrimp to absorb solution inconsistently. When used properly, phosphates help to retain natural moisture, and protect the product through freezing and thawing. However, excessive absorption of phosphate solution can lead to a loss of functional benefits in the finished product. When thawed, the over-treated …
