Multicultural Picture Books: Windows And Mirrors, Dawn M. Goodale
Multicultural Picture Books: Windows And Mirrors, Dawn M. Goodale
Graduate Research Papers
Multicultural children’s picture books offer readers views into far away places that can be similar or very different from that of the reader. These picture books can be used to enhance the Social Studies curriculum by offering students new perspectives on other cultures. The researcher employed the five dimensions of global perspectives developed by Robert G. Hanvey (1976) and criteria from the Iowa Core Curriculum Social Studies Standards (grades 3-5), to determine the titles that best exemplified the criteria. Review of related literature included the topics of multicultural education, multicultural literature and reader-text-relationships. The project consists of an annotated bibliography …

Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi
Making Use Of Hidden Data: Towards A Database Of Weather Predictors, Karen Pennesi
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Anthropologists often have interesting and valuable data that remains ‘hidden’ because it does not fit easily into conventional academic publishing formats. This article suggests that it is worthwhile to make use of this hidden data for the benefit of other researchers and the study communities. To illustrate, the article describes initial efforts to create an online database of traditional weather prediction indicators derived from observations of the ecosystem. The database was started with descriptions of more than a thousand prediction indicators used in Northeast Brazil, which were collected as part of a survey of farmers and ‘rain prophets’. It is …

Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien
Crossing International And Research Boundaries: From Subject To Author For An Authentic Refugee Portrait, Jasenka Besic, J. Lynn Mcbrien
School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
Scholars in training, including qualitative researchers, are often cautioned about their relationship to their research participants with the notion that “getting too close” can distort findings. However, with many participants, especially those with whom issues of trust are problematic due to their personal experiences, researchers cannot gain rich data without creating an authentic and close relationship. In this longitudinal study, a female Bosnian youth and an academic researcher grapple with issues of trust, friendship, and research in an effort to determine ways to create valid research findings over years of relationship building.

From There To Here: Using Photography To Explore Perspectives Of Resettled Refugee Youth, Jody Lynn Mcbrien, Rebecca Day
School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
Because refugee numbers are much smaller than those of other immigrant populations in the United States, researchers frequently group refugees with other immigrants in their studies. However, due to the traumatic circumstances that most refugees face prior to their arrival, they require separate consideration. We chose the medium of photography to help newcomer refugee students express themselves beyond their current capacities in English, and we used the students’ photographs as catalysts to interview them about their resettled lives in the United States. Through this process, we discovered themes central to the students’ lives, and ways in which they were working …

Professor Edward Felten has observed, "[i]n technology policy debates, lawyers put too much faith in technical solutions, while technologists put too much faith in legal solutions." In their Article, The Best Available Technology Standard, Lital Helman and Professor Gideon Parchomovsky demonstrate the power and potential consequences of Felten's Law as they consider whether the current safe harbor architecture of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) strikes the appropriate public policy balance concerning online copyright infringement and the open Internet, ultimately concluding that it cannot without the help of the best filtering technology available to guide and architect the contours of …
What Is A Lawyer? A Reconstruction Of The Lawyer As An Officer Of The Court, Deborah M. Hussey Freeland
What Is A Lawyer? A Reconstruction Of The Lawyer As An Officer Of The Court, Deborah M. Hussey Freeland
Saint Louis University Public Law Review
This paper engages with the central question in legal ethics concerning the lawyer’s role, analyzing this fundamental question in terms of professional identity. Literature in this debate frames the lawyer either as a professional who exists entirely to serve her client (the “standard conception”), or as a professional whose primary duties are to the legal system. I reposit and examine the lawyer’s professional identity as an officer of the court—an identity marginalized by those who favor the standard conception—noting that “standard conception” was coined to draw attention to a supplanting threat to legal professionalism. Providing a uniquely detailed examination of …
A Comparative Linguistic Study Between Sicilian And Spanish (Estudio Lingüístico-Comparativo Del Siciliano Y El Español), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez, Raven Chakerian
A Comparative Linguistic Study Between Sicilian And Spanish (Estudio Lingüístico-Comparativo Del Siciliano Y El Español), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez, Raven Chakerian
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study proposes a linguistic-comparative analysis of both Spanish and Sicilian. While numerous linguistic studies have been done on Romantic languages, very few deal with Sicilian, isolated as a dialect of Italian. According to some linguists, Sicilian, as well as Sardinian (spoken in Sardinia), is not a dialect but an independent language per se. It lost its language status when the Italian parliament decided to assign a national language. This research, independently of Sicilian being a language or a dialect, analyses the most important phonetic, lexical, spelling and morphological differences with his sister-language, Spanish. At the same time, some parallelisms …

This research is a study on how Malaysian English is used in creative writing by a Malaysian writer. It studies the novel ‘Evening is a whole day’ by Preeta Samarasan. Focusing on the extraction and categorisation of Malaysian English lexical items and semantic terms used by a Malaysian writer, this research sets out to study the extent to which the writer uses lexical items and semantic terms from the non-native variety in her prose writing. Children’s literature has long been regarded as appropriate and engaging materials for teaching language to young learners. Teachers of English as a second language (ESL) have found narrative texts to be effective in building language and comprehension skills. A massive volume of children’s literature, however, are produced for the native speakers in mind, thus bearing cultural references and settings that may be unfamiliar to non-native speakers. Viewed from the Schema Theory perspective – which holds that comprehension of texts is made possible through existing mental frameworks – the lack of familiarity with the culture upon which a story is situated …

This study investigates the forms and functions of directives in an advice column of a local newspaper. The forms and functions of directives are intricately related to the protection of face. Thus, the (im)politeness and face-saving strategies used in the advice texts are also analysed. The forms and functions of directives are identified based on the theoretical frameworks of Ervin-Tripp’s (1976), Blum-Kulka (1987) and Eken’s (1996). To rationalize the relationship between forms and functions of directives and the protection of face, the theoretical frameworks of (im)politeness adopted are the positive-negative politeness theory (Brown and Levinson, 1978, 1987) and the frame-based …
