A Year Of Practice And Performance: Improving Piano Skills To Become A Better Choral Director, Ellen Mckenzie Jan 2012

A Year Of Practice And Performance: Improving Piano Skills To Become A Better Choral Director, Ellen Mckenzie

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Piano skills are extremely important to a choral teacher’s success, and I always considered my piano playing as a weak point in my teaching. The intent of my project was to dedicate a year of intensive practicing and performing as an accompanist in order to improve my piano technique, gain a wider repertoire of music to use in teaching private lessons and choir, and gain confidence in my abilities as an accompanist. Through one hundred and three hours of documented practice time, eight performance experiences in a variety of settings, and eighteen pieces prepared and performed, my playing has improved …

Anti~Catholicism And The Gothic Imaginary: The Historical And Literary Contexts, Diane Long Hoeveler Jan 2012

Anti~Catholicism And The Gothic Imaginary: The Historical And Literary Contexts, Diane Long Hoeveler

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

General historical consensus (long in the grip of Whig assumptions) has frequently proclaimed that religion during the Enlightenment period was no longer the highly contentious issue that it had been since the reformation in England. By the mid-eighteenth century, the long siege of fighting and dying over religious beliefs was, in fact, believed to be safely in the past as an elite class and an enlightened bourgeoisie embraced the brave new world of rationalism. This upper crust relegated religious disputes to a much earlier European culture that had been prone to such primitive, superstitious, and irrational behaviors and beliefs. The …

Partial Word Knowledge: Frontier Words In The L2 Mental Lexicon, Alla Zareva Jan 2012

Partial Word Knowledge: Frontier Words In The L2 Mental Lexicon, Alla Zareva

English Faculty Publications

The study set out to examine the partial word knowledge of native speakers, L2 advanced, and intermediate learners of English with regard to four word features from Richards' (1976) taxonomy of aspects describing what knowing a word entails. To capture partial familiarity, the participants completed in writing a test containing low and mid frequency content words, accompanied by a word knowledge scale. The analysis showed that there were three distinctive patterns of partially familiar vocabulary but their distribution across the three groups was quite different, which indicated that partial knowledge was linked to different word features across the three proficiency …

Forum: “Sustaining, Replicating, And Bringing Up-To-Scale Those Programs That Work For Latino Youth”, Csusb - Latino Education And Advocacy Days (Lead)

Latino Education and Advocacy Days (LEAD) Video Recordings

Video recording of the “Sustaining, Replicating, and Bringing Up-to-Scale those Programs that Work for Latino Youth” forum.

Description:

The theme for the 2012 LEAD Summit “Sustaining, Replicating, and Bringing Up-to-Scale those Programs that Work for Latino Youth” was of particular importance because the Latino population was large, growing, and relatively young, but had lower educational achievement than other groups in the nation. Addressing the educational needs of the fastest-growing community in the United States, the Latino community, is therefore vital to our local, regional, state, and national interests.

Given this importance, it is imperative to continue the work of identifying …

Aspectual Properties And Polarity-Sensitivity Of Copulas Pen1 And Khuu1 In Thai, Boonjeera Chiravate Jan 2012

Aspectual Properties And Polarity-Sensitivity Of Copulas Pen1 And Khuu1 In Thai, Boonjeera Chiravate

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

'Pen1' and 'khʉʉ1' in Thai have traditionally been regarded as copular verbs comparable to 'be' in English. Appearing in a copulative sentence, the two Thai copula verbs, however, differ in polarity-sensitivity. The present study demonstrates that the difference in polarity-sensitivity of the two Thai copulas cannot be accounted for within the theory of polarity-sensitive items previously proposed. Investigating the aspectual properties of the two Thai copulas in comparison with those of English copula, this study suggests that an explanation for the difference in polarity-sensitivity of the two Thai copulas might involve their aspectual properties. Contributing to the study of aspect …

Self As Container? Metaphors We Lose By In Understanding Early Chinese Texts, Jane Geaney Jan 2012

Self As Container? Metaphors We Lose By In Understanding Early Chinese Texts, Jane Geaney

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

My study explores the pitfalls of presuming the «direct» experience of containment makes good sense of texts from Early China (ca. 500-100 b.c.e).3 Descriptions of sensory processes in classical and non-canonical early Chinese texts do not lend themselves to being interpreted through Lakoff and Johnson’s container model. If the body is a container in their sense, the sensory faculties would have to connect the self, which they understand as an internally contained substance, to a world that is clearly delineated as outside and other. But this does not match the portrait of sensory experience in early Chinese texts and …

Richard Edes Harrison And The Cartographic Perspective Of Modern Internationalism, Timothy Barney Jan 2012

Richard Edes Harrison And The Cartographic Perspective Of Modern Internationalism, Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Air-age globalism was a discursive phenomenon throughout the development of World War II that accounted for the rapid “shrinking” of the world through air technologies and the internationalization of American interests. Cartography became air-age globalism’s primary popular expression, and journalistic cartographers such as Richard Edes Harrison at Fortune magazine introduced new mapping projections and perspectives in response to these global changes. This essay argues that Harrison’s mapping innovations mediate a geopolitical shift in America toward a modern, image-based internationalism. Through recastings of “vision” and “strategy,” Harrison’s work offers an opportunity to assess the rhetorical tensions between idealism and realism in …

A Plaguing Militainment: Ideology, Metaphor, And Interpellation In Thq's "Homefront", Brendan G.A. Hughes

Masters Theses

Roger Stahl's book Militainment, Inc. has set the standard for studying the convergence of military culture and popular entertainment-otherwise known as militainment. This concept is easily discernible for rhetorical critics studying discursive texts in the late twentieth century, particularly after the start of the war on terror. This project examines a militainment text, the first-person shooter videogame Homefront. Produced by design company THQ and developed by Kaos studios, this game foreshadows the future of the United States should Kim Jong-Il's son succeed in unifying the divided peninsula and the American superpower crumble. After reviewing relevant literature and outlining three important …

Sketching As An Ally In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Kenneth P. Webb Jan 2012

Sketching As An Ally In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Kenneth P. Webb

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the possible use of sketching as a pedagogical tool in the first-year composition classroom. The digital age has brought with it a wealth of new (and culturally significant) multimodal compositions, that is, compositions that use multiple modes of communication. In particular, visual modes of communication are growing increasingly important. Furthermore, new ways of sharing information has lead to an accelerating proliferation of new media that increasingly blends visual and verbal elements in the creation of compositions. College students, in the midst of grappling with these new challenges, and with the promise of unforeseen multimodal genres in the …

Effects Of Varied Meaningfulness On The Load Theory Of Attention, Hannah Mason Jan 2012

Effects Of Varied Meaningfulness On The Load Theory Of Attention, Hannah Mason

Masters Theses

The point at which selection of which stimuli in our environment to attend to is made has plagued researchers for decades. The load theory was developed as a compromise between the early and late selection theories. However, little research has been done on the effects of varied meaningfulness on the load theory of attention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects that varied meaningfulness has on both high and low attentional loads. Sixteen traditionally-aged college students were given a selection task in either high or low attentional load while being presented with distractors in the periphery. Mean …

The Anglicization Of Ælfric's "Passio Sancti Eadmundi Regis Et Martyris", Benjamin W. Potmesil

Masters Theses

While depicting Christian saints is certainly not unique to Old English literature, the presence of a hagiographic tradition within its corpus offers a variety of possibilities for academic investigation by editors of Old English texts. Of particular interest is JElfric's "Passio Sancti Eadmundi Regis et Martyris." This hagiography, which focuses upon an Anglo-Saxon king of the ninth century, is acknowledged by JElfric to be a translation of Abbo of Fleury' s Latin account of Edmund's death. Fortunate! y, copies of both JElfric's Old English version and Abbo's Latin original have survived to the modern day. As a result, the modern …

This paper examines the use of cognitive tools in designing an educational website that helps middle school learners improve their technological literacy. The Talk to Me website consists of a young adult novel, online activities that expand on concepts introduced in the novel, and a blog written by college engineering students about their experiences attending college and taking engineering courses. Talk to Me is designed using Imaginative Education, a learning theory developed by Kieran Egan that outlines learners' different phases of development as their level of understanding and linguistic ability becomes more sophisticated. Beta testing occurred in 2010 with a …

Inferencing Abilities Of Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kelsey J. Depew Jan 2012

Inferencing Abilities Of Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kelsey J. Depew

Masters Theses

Inferencing is the ability to make judgments based upon limited information. It is necessary for basic problem solving, negation social interaction, and comprehension of oral and written language. Despite the importance of inferencing in daily life, there are currently no commercially available tests dedicated entirely to the assessment of inferencing. Previous research has demonstrated a developmental progression of inferencing abilities in neurotypical children. However, no clinical norms exist. Additionally, little research has been conducted regarding the inferencing abilities of children with language impairments. The purpose of this project was to compare inferencing abilities of children with language impairment to typically …
