Interrogating Texts: From Deferent To Efferent And Aesthetic Reading Practices, Cheryl Hogue Smith Jan 2012

Interrogating Texts: From Deferent To Efferent And Aesthetic Reading Practices, Cheryl Hogue Smith

Publications and Research

This article offers a revised version of transactional reading theory to explain how students classified as basic writers tend to employ counterproductive reading and thinking processes that inhibit them from full participation in academic life. Louise Rosenblatt proposes that readers have two main positions or purposes in reading—the efferent stance, where readers focus on the information in a text, and the aesthetic stance, where readers focus on the experience they have with a text. This article describes a third, deferent stance of reading that many basic writers adopt when they defer their interpretations of texts to other readers or defer …

Bilingual Education As An Eeo: Educational Enrichment Opportunity For All, Anaida Colón-Muñiz, Norma Valenzuela Jan 2012

Bilingual Education As An Eeo: Educational Enrichment Opportunity For All, Anaida Colón-Muñiz, Norma Valenzuela

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In this chapter, we present our position on the need for more, not less, bilingual education based not only on our personal experiences and on the evidence that is available in the literature verifying the value of bilingualism and biliteracy. Even with our bumpy experiences as young bilingual children, we are still better for it than if we had been raised without the benefit of two languages. But we also know it is time to do a better job with our youth in the United States as it refers to language development.

In Part I, we argue that bilingual education …

Wisdom And Conflict Resolution: A Possible Framework For Integrated Practice, Rachel Goldberg, Brian Blancke Jan 2012

Wisdom And Conflict Resolution: A Possible Framework For Integrated Practice, Rachel Goldberg, Brian Blancke

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

What would it look like to practice in a way that fully supported not only the cognitive and emotional intelligence of practitioners and parties, but their somatic and spiritual intelligence as well? Good practice is more than strong technique and knowledge. Good work depends on intention, presence, and a connection with parties. The authors argue that for interveners and parties, conflict involves all four dimensions of human understanding. Given the systemic nature of conflict intervention, the authors explore what multi-dimensional practice might look like, and propose a new multi-dimensional framework grounded in current work. The article includes practice examples showing …

Quorum Quenching Revisited-From Signal Decays To Signalling Confusion, Kar Wai Hong, Chong Lek Koh, Choon Kook Sam, Wai Fong Yin, Kok Gan Chan Jan 2012

Quorum Quenching Revisited-From Signal Decays To Signalling Confusion, Kar Wai Hong, Chong Lek Koh, Choon Kook Sam, Wai Fong Yin, Kok Gan Chan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In a polymicrobial community, while some bacteria are communicating with neighboring cells (quorum sensing), others are interrupting the communication (quorum quenching), thus creating a constant arms race between intercellular communication. In the past decade, numerous quorum quenching enzymes have been found and initially thought to inactivate the signalling molecules. Though this is widely accepted, the actual roles of these quorum quenching enzymes are now being uncovered. Recent evidence extends the role of quorum quenching to detoxification or metabolism of signalling molecules as food and energy source; this includes "signalling confusion", a term coined in this paper to refer to the …

The Influence Of Cognitive Styles On The Interaction With A Language Instruction Cd-Rom : A Case Study Of Malaysian Esl Learners, L.L. Ng

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In postcolonial multilingual societies, matters of education are deeply rooted in the discourse of ethnicity. In Malaysia, the interface between ethnicity and education is reflected in recent debates on the choice of medium of instruction (MOI). In 2002, the Malaysian government introduced English as MOI by replacing Malay, the national language, for teaching mathematics and science, at the school level. However, in 2009, the policy was reversed to Malay. This policy initiative has been actively contested in the Malaysian media. Through an analysis of news reports on the controversy published by the Malaysian Chinese newspaper, Nanyang Siang Pao, this paper …

Damage Identification Using Experimental Modal Analysis And Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Interface System (Anfis), S.J.S. Hakim, H.A. Razak Jan 2012

Damage Identification Using Experimental Modal Analysis And Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Interface System (Anfis), S.J.S. Hakim, H.A. Razak

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is a process for mapping from a given input to a single output using the fuzzy logic and neuro-adaptive learning algorithms. Using a given input-output data set, ANFIS constructs a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) whose fuzzy membership function parameters are adjusted using combination of back propagation algorithm with a least square type of method. The feasibility of ANFIS as strong tool for predicting the severity of damage in a model steel girder bridge is examined in this research. Reduction in the structural stiffness produces changes in the dynamics properties, such as the natural frequencies …

All Work And No Play Makes Jack (Or Jill) A Dull Writer, Joseph Anson Jan 2012

All Work And No Play Makes Jack (Or Jill) A Dull Writer, Joseph Anson

The Utah English Journal

Yes, I am one of those geeky idealistic English teachers, who occasionally fantasize about being Robin Williams’ character Mr. Keating from the classic film Dead Poets Society. After twelve years of unsuccessfully convincing my students to call me “O Captain, My Captain,” I still hold to the belief that I can get my students to “savor words and language” (Haft, Henderson, Witt, Thomas, & Weir, 1989). Regardless of an individual’s ability or inherent wordsmithiness, I encourage all students to play with words on many different levels. On Fridays, we set aside time to play with words. Just play. But why? …

Teaching Textual Recycling, Thomas Henry, Jim Pettersson Jan 2012

Teaching Textual Recycling, Thomas Henry, Jim Pettersson

The Utah English Journal

Linguist, Michael Lewis suggests that a “recycling” strategy should be at the heart of an approach to teaching English (especially to speakers of second languages). He calls this specific approach the “Lexical Approach.” This approach focuses on ways in which students can use pre-fabricated linguistic units and/or formulaic expressions to form new language. In addition to the Lexical Approach, a “Template Approach” endorsed by Gerald Graff & Cathy Birkenstein, also advocates the “recycling” of chunks of language to form new discourse. Their text, They Say, I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing, contains formulaic language used to promote …

Vox Populi-Vox Belli: A Historical Study Of Southern Ante Bellum Public Attitudes And Motivations Toward Secession, Julian Boyden Jan 2012

Vox Populi-Vox Belli: A Historical Study Of Southern Ante Bellum Public Attitudes And Motivations Toward Secession, Julian Boyden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines why the south seceded in 1860 as opposed to any other time in the 19th century and what changed the mentalité of the people in the period 1857-1860. The underlying issue in southern politics and the issue of secession was clearly slavery and slavery rested on the economics of cotton. Yet slavery and cotton do not explain why the South seceded in 1860 and not at other times in the preceding seventy years. 1807 saw the outlawing of the international slave trade and 1819 saw Congress pass the Slave Trade Act interdicting the ships involved. In 1828 …

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt Jan 2012

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite a vast amount of research on Late Antiquity, little attention has been paid to certain figures that prove to be influential during this time. The focus of historians on Constantine I, the first Roman Emperor to allegedly convert to Christianity, has often come at the cost of ignoring Constantine's predecessor, Diocletian, sometimes known as the "Second Father of the Roman Empire". The success of Constantine's empire has often been attributed to the work and reforms of Diocletian, but there have been very few studies of the man beyond simple biography. This work will attempt to view three of Diocletian's …

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt Jan 2012

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My primary aim for this study is to illuminate the Ransom trilogy's inherent psychological and spiritual themes, as well as demonstrate how these themes clarify Lewis's philosophical and political goals for the text. Specifically, by investigating Lewis's mythic imagery and suffering motifs in light of psychoanalytic and theological literary criticisms, I elucidate the reasoning behind Lewis's unique—and at times, horrific—portrayal of fear, violence, and death. I also investigate how Lewis integrates his theology with the horrors of personal and intrapersonal suffering, as well as how he utilizes imagination and myth to explicate the practical (or political) implications of his theodicy. …

Children’S Acquisition Of Subject Markers In Isixhosa, Mantoa Smouse, Sandile Gxilishe, Jill De Villiers, Peter A. De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

The study of African languages is a rapidly growing area of investigation in linguistics. It has become clear that there is a rich fund of information in the large number of African languages falling into several families that can inform the science of the universal and particular features of human language. Although the Bantu language family has no historical relation to the family of Romance languages, fruitful discussion has begun among researchers seeking to illuminate some of the special features that are shared (De Cat and Demuth 2008), especially in the area of concern here, namely clitics. But the definition …

The Impact Of Language On The Expression And Assessment Of Pain In Children Aged 4-7 Years: A Mixed Methods Study, Pary Mohammad Azize Jan 2012

The Impact Of Language On The Expression And Assessment Of Pain In Children Aged 4-7 Years: A Mixed Methods Study, Pary Mohammad Azize

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

The assessment of pain in children has been an enduring theme in the research literature over many decades, with particular focus on how pain can be adequately measured and the extent of under-measurement of pain (American Academy of Pediatrics 2001; Coyne, 2006; McCaffery & Beebe 1989; Subhashini et al., 2009). Definitions of pain, and hence development of pain measurement tools, are often criticised for not addressing the influence of culture and ethnicity on pain (Bates et al., 1993; McCaffery & Beebe 1989; Zinke, 2007), in children, the perception and expression of pain is also affected by cognitive development (Hallström and …

Relevance Of Value Judgment In Law, Meera Matthew Jan 2012

Relevance Of Value Judgment In Law, Meera Matthew

National Law School of India Review

The present paper undertakes an analysis of the role value judgments have played and continue to do in our legal system. For this, the article first is a survey of the concept of "value judgments" and therefore, deals with the theoretical understanding of values and their applications through the course of the development of the law. The attendant issues of subjectivity and the positivist outlook on the same is discussed in the same manner, a survey of the development of perspectives with time. The different approaches taken by jurists such as Dworkin have been discussed. The author then studies the …

Who Are We? Parental Influences On Self-Identities And Self-Esteem Of Second Generation Youths In Spain, Alejandro Portes, Adrienne Celaya, Erik Vickstrom, Rosa Aparicio

Articles

We review the literature on determinants of ethnic/national self-identities and self-esteem as a prelude to examining these outcomes among a large, statistically representative sample of second generation adolescents in Madrid and Barcelona. While these psycho-social outcomes are malleable, they still represent important dimensions of immigrant adaptation and can have significant consequences both for individual mobility and collective mobilizations. Current theories are largely based on data from the United States and other Anglophone countries. The availability of a new large Spanish survey allows us to test those theories in an entirely different socio-cultural context. In addition to having data on close …
