Constructed Languages (CONLANG) are frequently found in creative mediums like books or television. Famous stories like Lord of the Rings (Elvish), Star Trek (Klingon) or Game of Thrones (Dothraki) create these languages to help immerse us in the world of the characters. Despite the language being different from our own, this display of human culture helps us to understand their existence better and connect the way we would with others despite linguistic similarities and differences. My presentation of /βi.ðe/ or Vitae, a CONLANG inspired by my own creative writing, seeks to guide the audience in how they can discover a …

Exploring Geometry Teaching And Learning Through Self-Study, Linnea Kallebo Ms., Ayse Ozturk
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
Self-study is a powerful tool for improving teacher effectiveness, particularly in mathematics instruction where misconceptions can significantly impact student learning. This self-study examines my evolving understanding of geometry concepts and common student misconceptions encountered during a teaching geometry course. Through reflection, peer discussion, and analysis of misconceptions, this study reveals how examining both my own learning and students’ thinking can inform self-adjustment of teaching strategies. Findings highlight the importance of building new geometry concepts on mastered ideas and pairing self-study with evaluation of student responses to improve instructional decision-making.

Beyond Words: Supporting Nonverbal Autistic Preschoolers With Exceptional Cognitive Abilities, Dawn Timms
Beyond Words: Supporting Nonverbal Autistic Preschoolers With Exceptional Cognitive Abilities, Dawn Timms
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
This project explores how caregivers can support autistic preschoolers who are nonverbal yet demonstrate advanced cognitive abilities. Grounded in communication theory and neurodiversity‑affirming practice, it reframes communication as a shared, relational process that extends beyond spoken language. Drawing from interdisciplinary research, I created a strengths‑based caregiver communication toolkit that translates complex theory into clear, practical strategies families can use in everyday routines. This work honors the intelligence of children whose thinking outpaces their speech and equips caregivers with tools that make communication more accessible, responsive, and affirming.

Ideas And Activities For Strengthening Multilingual Learners' Academic Vocabulary, Jennifer Altieri
Ideas And Activities For Strengthening Multilingual Learners' Academic Vocabulary, Jennifer Altieri
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Research suggests that while the number of multilingual students in schools is growing, there continues to be an achievement gap. Often, the difficulty is related to reading comprehension and, more specifically, vocabulary. Given the fact that academic language takes longer to develop than social language skills, it is important that multilingual learners receive additional support related to developing academic language. Content-specific vocabulary development plays a key role in academic language. This article discusses the types of vocabulary terms that are important to teach, suggestions for ways to create a classroom environment conducive to developing the terms, and specific activities which …

Boosting Aac Use: A Scoping Review Of Collaborating With Educators For Classroom Success, Alexis Lawton
Boosting Aac Use: A Scoping Review Of Collaborating With Educators For Classroom Success, Alexis Lawton
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Specific studies on South Carolina teachers showed that reasons for declining teacher retention and recruitment include concerns about low salary, school-level issues, and working conditions (Devers, Duyar, & Buchanan, 2024; South Carolina Teacher Retention Study, 2020; South Carolina Teacher, 2023). Even though teacher health has a significant impact on teacher retention (Casely-Hayford, et al., 2022), it is not present in discussions of teacher working conditions (Merrill, 2021). Instead, teacher health (both physical and mental) is often embedded in discussions of teacher burnout (Madigan, Kim, Glandorf, & Kavanagh, 2023) and teacher stress generally (Lazarus & Folkman, 1987; Kyriacou, 2001; Prilleltensky et …

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This article examines the positive impact of an exercise in which a group of pre-service teachers enrolled in a cultural diversity course at a Midwestern University deconstructed the contents of a video to better understand how culturally responsive teaching can significantly impact the teaching learning process especially with marginalized student populations. Preservice teachers were required to watch a video on culturally responsive teaching and engage in a "free write" based on the contents of the video. After that, students were asked to respond to two prompts based on content from the video. Data analysis from their "free writes," prompts responses, …

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This article makes a case for culturally relevant pedagogies as one solution to the current cultural gap between teacher and student body in public education. To make this argument, we present our self-reflection and positionality of a research project on culturally relevant pedagogies. These reflections include our backgrounds and reactions to the project. Additionally, we present four of the most meaningful quotes from the study representing the barriers to implementation and the advantages of implementing culturally relevant pedagogy as a teaching framework.

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Language deprivation is a nationwide epidemic despite Early Intervention (EI) programs for deaf babies. EI provides at-home services and assumes a caregiver is with their baby during the day to use the strategies they learn. However, most parents work full time, and their children attend daycare. This paper describes a pilot program for families whose deaf babies were in daycare without full access to a natural language. Deaf Language Acquisition Associates (DLAA) were placed in classrooms with deaf babies for twenty-five hours a week. The program's success resulted in funding through the state legislature and adoption statewide.

Expert Roles Reconsidered: What Was Learned About The Mentor/Intern 4 Experience During A Global Pandemic, Courtney Clayton, Kristina Peck, Christy Irish, Melissa Wells, Janine Davis
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
In the early months of 2020, the United States was hit with a pandemic of global proportions. Schools, including universities, were forced to close all on-campus activities. The campus where we teach was no exception. Therefore, our interns (student teachers) went from face-to-face classroom internships to virtual internships. Over the summer, we decided to examine how virtual instruction impacted our interns' year of student teaching, knowing that instruction at all schools for their internship year was going to start virtually, and, for the foreseeable future, be virtual. We focused on our mentor teachers' perceptions of what their interns were experiencing …

Difficult Discussions: Critical Conversations As A Culturally Sustaining Teaching Practice In The College Classroom, Crystal Glover, Sherell Fuller
Difficult Discussions: Critical Conversations As A Culturally Sustaining Teaching Practice In The College Classroom, Crystal Glover, Sherell Fuller
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
As women of color in academia committed to matters of equity and inclusion, we remain undaunted by the idea of having difficult, but necessary discussions on race and ethnicity in the college classroom. After years of facilitating these types of conversations among mostly white, middle class, female teacher candidates, we began to notice an even greater reluctance than normal on the part of our students to authentically engage in difficult discussions in the classroom. As the sociopolitical climate within the United States shifted and became more divisive along racial and political lines, those divisions found their way into our classrooms. …

The Peach Crayon Phenomenon: How Inequitable Perspectives Influence The Cld Achievement Gap, Judith Collazo
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
According to Ross (2008), there has been a cultural mismatch the American public school system due to a misunderstanding of the basic tenets of culture. Considering that the cultural mismatch that exists between the majority of teachers and culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students influences teachers' cultural perspectives (Wildhagen, 2012), social justice educators can commit to "knowledge building" through cultural competence (Fullan, 2001). In order to understand cultural differences, educators can learn to re-interpret their views of "cultural normality" onto their diverse students (Ross, 2008). Further, guiding teachers to become more culturally competent involves exploring educators' perspectives about CLD learners, …
