Emotional Intelligence In Nursing, Elizabeth Ann Freitas, Estelle Codier, Lynn Muneno

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Practice problems: Nurses are responsible for using emotional skills to evaluate and promote patient's emotional health. There is very limited research relating to measuring emotional abilities of nurses. Research from professions outside nursing has demonstrated that EI abilities can be developed. In the oncology clinical environments emotional health needs are particularly acute. This feasibility study was undertaken to assess and improve EI abilities in oncology nurses.

Evidence used and synthesized: Data was collected on rounds participants: mood/energy reports, emotional assessments, and evaluations of rounds efficacy. Rounds outcomes were evaluated via chart reviews, and reports of nurse satisfaction/retention. Improvement implementation strategy: …

The Trauma Of Being Diagnosed With Hiv/Aids For Zimbabwean Women, Clara M. Gona Jan 2012

The Trauma Of Being Diagnosed With Hiv/Aids For Zimbabwean Women, Clara M. Gona

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Background: Zimbabwe has among the highest HIV infection rates worldwide, with 1.3 million people, most of them women between 15-49 years living with the disease in 2008. The pandemic has caused crisis level adult morbidity and mortality among the economically-active groups, huge reversals of recent gains in early childhood survival, rapid decrease in population growth, and a relentless rise in the number of orphans. Missing from the Zimbabwean HIV/AIDS literature are the women's voices and experiences of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS for Zimbabwean women.

Intercultural Communication Competence Among Long-Duration Spaceflight Crew: Implications For Moon, Mars And Beyond, Pratibha Kumar Jan 2012

Intercultural Communication Competence Among Long-Duration Spaceflight Crew: Implications For Moon, Mars And Beyond, Pratibha Kumar

Theses and Dissertations

Intercultural studies have established that communication misunderstandings and breakdowns are inevitable when people from different cultures interact in a multicultural environment. This dissertation study examined intercultural issues among long-duration spaceflight (LDSF) crew interactions, by using the theoretical framework of intercultural communication competence (ICC) theory. Specifically, it analyzed 71 oral histories from the Shuttle-Mir project, live interviews of American astronauts, and 71 journals written by astronauts on the International Space Station. The study employed a deductive qualitative content analysis method, supported by descriptive statistics. It posed three research questions: RQ 1: What are the documented instances of intercultural communication competence in …

Developing Justice-Oriented Teachers: Personal Transformation Through Relationships, Joan Armon, Elizabeth Grassi, Heidi Barker, John Cross, Kathy Nutting, Elizabeth Dorman Jan 2012

Developing Justice-Oriented Teachers: Personal Transformation Through Relationships, Joan Armon, Elizabeth Grassi, Heidi Barker, John Cross, Kathy Nutting, Elizabeth Dorman

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The teacher preparation program in a Jesuit liberal arts college prepares future teachers to identify and actively confront inequities in society. Empowering teachers to carry justice-oriented teaching into schools rests on strong relationships among peers and professors on campus, and with students and families from diverse communities in university neighborhoods. The rationale and approach to fostering relationships focuses this first of three essays in Jesuit Higher Education. Future essays will provide practical examples of action in service and reflection in preparing justice-oriented teachers.

Forall X: Introduction To Formal Logic, Version 1.29, P.D. Magnus Jan 2012

Forall X: Introduction To Formal Logic, Version 1.29, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Books

In formal logic, sentences and arguments in English are translated into mathematical languages with well-defined properties. If all goes well, properties of the argument that were hard to discern become clearer. This book covers translation, formal semantics, and proof theory for both sentential logic and quantified logic. Each chapter contains practice exercises; solutions to selected exercises appear in an appendix

Voicing And Devoicing Rules In East And Southeast Asian Languages, Siyu C. Zhang Jan 2012

Voicing And Devoicing Rules In East And Southeast Asian Languages, Siyu C. Zhang

Honors College Theses

Languages are composed of sounds that are produced by the vocal organs. These sounds can be split into two categories, voiceless and voiced. In general, based upon the International Phonetic Alphabet, there are more voiced sounds possible than voiceless sounds, with vowels, nasals, and approximants inherently voiced. After analyzing the separate phonetic inventories of 9 Asian languages representative of the major Asian language families (Arabic, Burmese, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, Turkish, Vietnamese), it was found that all of them except Mandarin Chinese had far more voiced sounds than voiceless sounds as well. After isolating only stops and affricates, …

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith Jan 2012

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith

Numeracy

The aim of the Numeracy Centre at the University of Cape Town is to develop students’ quantitative literacy (QL) in a manner consistent with their programmes of study and intended roles in the community. Our theoretical perspective on the nature of QL is in line with that of the New Literacies Studies and sees academic QL as practices in different academic disciplinary contexts. This means that for us the ideal curriculum structure for developing QL would fully integrate it into the teaching of the disciplines. This is in practice not achievable in most cases, especially since many students do not …

Best Practices For The Law Of The Horse: Teaching Cyberlaw And Illuminating Law Through Online Simulations, Ira Steven Nathenson Jan 2012

Best Practices For The Law Of The Horse: Teaching Cyberlaw And Illuminating Law Through Online Simulations, Ira Steven Nathenson

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

In an influential 1996 article entitled Cyberspace and the Law of the Horse, Judge Frank Easterbrook mocked cyberlaw as a subject lacking in cohesion and therefore unworthy of inclusion in the law school curriculum. Responses to Easterbrook, most notably that of Lawrence Lessig in his 1999 article The Law of the Horse: What Cyberlaw Might Teach, have taken a theoretical approach. However, this Article—also appropriating the “Law of the Horse” moniker—concludes that Easterbrook’s challenge is primarily pedagogical, requiring a response keyed to whether cyberlaw ought to be taught in law schools. The Article concludes that despite Easterbrook’s concerns, cyberlaw presents …

The Shape Of Things To Come: What We Can Learn From Patent Claim Length, Kristen Osenga Jan 2012

The Shape Of Things To Come: What We Can Learn From Patent Claim Length, Kristen Osenga

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

Technology is always changing. Patent law is also constantly evolving, as the courts and Congress continue to make significant changes to this area of law. But what about patents themselves? Some studies have looked at how patent specifications have changed over time, but no one has looked specifically at the most important aspect of a patent, its claims. Given the changes in technology and law, one would anticipate patent claims to have evolved.

Despite the expectations, this paper concludes that patent claim shape is largely unaffected by time, technology, crowded fields, or prosecution time. This paper suggests a possible reason …

Network Modulation During Complex Syntactic Processing, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Dorothee Saur, Wolfgang Mader, Björn Schelter, Sladjana Lukic, Eisha Wali, Jens Timmer, Cynthia K. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Complex sentence processing is supported by a left-lateralized network including inferior frontal cortex and posterior superior temporal cortex. This study investigates the pattern of connectivity and information flow within this network. We used fMRI BOLD data derived from 12 healthy participants reported in and earlier study (Thompson, C. K., Den Ouden, D. B., Bonakdarpour, B., Garibaldi, K. & Parrish, T. B. (2010b). Neural plasticity and treatment-induced recovery of sentence processing in agrammatism. Neuropsychologia, 48(11), 3211-3227) to identify activation peaks associated with object-cleft over syntactically less complex subject-cleft processing. Directed Partial Correlation Analysis was conducted on time series extracted from …

Abraham's Folly, William Paul Haas Jan 2012

Abraham's Folly, William Paul Haas

Community Scholar Publications

This study is a philosophical reflection, not a formal exegesis, on the text of Genesis 12-22, tracing the interaction between Abraham and God, which led gradually to the Akedah, the binding of Isaac on the altar of sacrifice. The study rests on the hypothesis that Abraham, under the wise tutelage of Yahweh, slowly discovered that he had profoundly misunderstood God, thinking that God, like all the other gods Abraham had known, would eventually demand the sacrifice of his son as a condition for his having any more offspring.

In the light of this assumption attention of given to the rich …

Cognitive Approaches For The Semantic Web, Dedre Gentner, Frank Van Harmelen, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kai-Uwe Kuhnberger Jan 2012

Cognitive Approaches For The Semantic Web, Dedre Gentner, Frank Van Harmelen, Pascal Hitzler, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kai-Uwe Kuhnberger

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A major focus in the design of Semantic Web ontology languages used to be on finding a suitable balance between the expressivity of the language and the tractability of reasoning services defined over this language. This focus mirrors the original vision of a Web composed of machine readable and understandable data. Similarly to the classical Web a few years ago, the attention is recently shifting towards a user-centric vision of the Semantic Web. Essentially, the information stored on the Web is from and for humans. This new focus is not only reflected in the fast growing Linked Data Web but …

Administrators' Sense Of Self-Efficacy In Supervision Of Teachers Of English As A Second Language, Audrey Figueroa Murphy, Bruce A. Torff Jan 2012

Administrators' Sense Of Self-Efficacy In Supervision Of Teachers Of English As A Second Language, Audrey Figueroa Murphy, Bruce A. Torff

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. school population, which means schools are hiring significant numbers of new ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers. This burgeoning pool of ESL teachers must be supervised by administrative staff, and the stakes are considerably higher now that teacher-evaluation policies frequently require teachers to make the grade or lose their jobs. But most administrators’ educational experiences are remote from ESL instruction; few administrators are former ESL teachers, and supervisory training routinely fails to encompass ESL pedagogy. Hence, it remains unclear whether the administrators who supervise ESL teachers feel …
