Horizontal Educational Inequalities And Civil Conflict: The Nexus Of Ethnicity, Inequality, And Violent Conflict, Katharine M. Lindquist
Horizontal Educational Inequalities And Civil Conflict: The Nexus Of Ethnicity, Inequality, And Violent Conflict, Katharine M. Lindquist
Undergraduate Economic Review
Development economists have long questioned the relationship between civil conflict, inequality, and ethnic heterogeneity. While most quantitative literature has focused on inequality between individuals, this study analyzes the relationship of horizontal inequality – between groups of individuals sharing a common identity – and propensity for the onset of civil conflict, focusing on horizontal educational inequality (HEI). Findings from Demographic and Health Survey data for 44 countries from 1986 to 2005 show that measures of both female and male HEI are marginally or not significant in predicting civil conflict but strongly significant in predicting ethnic civil conflict.

A Strategic Vision For Reaching U.S. Native Latinos In Chicago, Carmelo Mercado
A Strategic Vision For Reaching U.S. Native Latinos In Chicago, Carmelo Mercado
180 Symposium Publications
Latino evangelism and church planting has traditionally focused on reaching first generation immigrant families from Spanish speaking countries. North American Division statistics demonstrate that the vast majority of Latino baptisms and membership are first generation Latinos. Yet the majority of Latinos in the U.S. are second and third generation, born in the United States. Generational differences make it clear that U.S. born Latinos cannot be reached with the same methods that are typically used with first generation Latinos. Through a partnership with the Seventh-day Adventist conferences in the Chicago area and the Lake Union we are proposing a strategy to …

Provocative Memory: The Fine Line Between Healing And Humiliation, Justice And Anger, Gearoid Millar
Provocative Memory: The Fine Line Between Healing And Humiliation, Justice And Anger, Gearoid Millar
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
This paper explores the public performance of memory for the purposes of healing and justice in post-war Sierra Leone. Following South Africa, truth commissions have commonly incorporated the public performances of truth-telling theorized within peacebuilding and transitional justice literature to provide psychological healing and postwar justice. Significant recent scholarship has, however, questioned the practical efficacy and cultural relevance of such processes in culturally diverse settings. Scholars such as Brandon Hamber, David Mendeloff, Tim Kelsall, and Rosalind Shaw have argued that there is no proof that such presentations heal individuals, nor provide a sense of justice. This paper investigates why this …

Engaging Collective Memories Of Conflict: Toward An Integrated Framework Of Inter-Group Dialogue And Capacity-Building, Tatsushi Arai
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
This essay is an attempt to construct an integrated framework for understanding multi-faceted meanings of history that correspond to different communal experiences of social conflict. The concept of conflict history is introduced to describe a worldview of a conflict party in search of a coherent explanation of the conflict’s origin, evolution, and significance. Four interconnected approaches to conflict history – orthodox, different, mediative, and alternative – are explored to integrate empirical inquiry into polarized relationships with unexplored possibilities of more peaceful coexistence that has not materialized in the past. This exercise of theory-building draws on the author’s applied practice in …
To Remember Rightly: Memory As An Instrument Of Nonviolent Resistance, Chijioke John Ojukwu
To Remember Rightly: Memory As An Instrument Of Nonviolent Resistance, Chijioke John Ojukwu
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
In the post holocaust era, there has emerged an academic tradition amongst peace scholars that affirms an intimate connection between memory and the spectre of violence. However, there remains an air of ambiguity over the role of memory, whether socially or collectively constructed, in the course of social change. In light of this thematic conundrum, this paper will argue that memory can function as a moral agent of social change, depending on how it is construed in the process of resistance. Accordingly, by using the Civil Rights Movement as a central case study, it will attempt to show how the …

School Communities, Historical Narratives And Reconciliation In Eastern Slavonia, Borislava Manojlovic
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
Discourses, historical memories and traumas that emerged from the processes of Croatian state and nation formation, war and transition towards peace marked tectonic changes in status and relationships between Croat and Serb communities. Even sixteen years after the war has ended, stereotyping, absence of crossgroup friendships and lack of intergroup interaction highlights the divide between the two communities, particularly in school contexts. This study seeks to explore how contested historical discourses are mediated and reconstructed at the grassroots level through interaction in school communities (by which I mean students, teachers and parents) in Eastern Slavonia (Croatia), how these processes influence …

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
As a result of war and state repression, exile has become one of the most significant and massive process of social and cultural dislocation of the Twentieth Century , producing diasporas of truly nomadic subject with very singular experiences of social space and time, of memory and imagination. This problematic has been recently addressed by social theorists and academic researchers within both Anthropology and Cultural Studies. Through the use of semiotic phenomenology as a method and the construction of an auto-ethnographic narrative, this paper attempts to give a situated account of the reconstruction of memory and imagination drawing my own …

Segments Of A Historically Political Existence: Diaries & Scrapbooks A History In The Making, Anna Imperial
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
From 1850 to 1877, a man by the name of Charles T. Cotton wrote 15 pocketbook diaries that displayed his daily thoughts and an account of the political situation in Washington D. C. during the Civil War. Alexander Gumby (a virtually unknown aspiring artist whom at one point took a job as a waiter at Columbia University in New York City), created a collection of 138 scrapbooks documenting American black history, and the discourse surrounding black leaders from the Civil War to the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. This essay will juxtapose both collections to convey how both objects …

Mureithi's Icyizere: Hope: Reconciliation, Rehumanization, And Collective Remembrance/Rebuilding Of Sacred And Safe Space, Eric Aoki, Kyle Jonas
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
In this essay we assess Patrick Mureithi’s (2009) documentary, ICYIZERE, as a document of collective memory (Blair, Dickinson, and Ott, 2010, p. 6).[1] Focusing on the power of memory in/of place, we argue that the local and national sites of atrocity and healing between perpetrators and survivors of the Rwandan genocide (i.e., a site of violence as well as the site of the reconciliatory workshop between Hutus and Tutsis in the film) serve as a sacred ground for healing and that this sacred ground is produced through negotiations of (dialectical) tensions between past and present and individual memory and …

The Somatization Of Depression In Native Pakistani Women, Rubeena H. Mian M.D., Linda S. Grossman Ph.D.
The Somatization Of Depression In Native Pakistani Women, Rubeena H. Mian M.D., Linda S. Grossman Ph.D.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Previous studies have pointed out the comorbidity of somatization and depression among non-Western psychiatric patients. We studied the somatization of depression in Pakistani women. Two groups were studies: inpatients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of major depression and a comparison sample of women living in the community without psychiatric diagnoses. Both groups were administered a rating scale for somatization. Results indicated that patients reported significantly more somatic symptoms than nonpatients. These findings support the concept that somatization may be a cultural mode of mental distress among Pakistani women, as has been observed for other non-Western populations.

Restorative Justice: A Tool In Rebuilding Post-Conflict Northern Ireland, Justine Darling
Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future
A
A common question shared by many, both individuals and entire post conflict societies, is how to address the trauma between victims and perpetrators impacted by violence while meeting local and international demands for peace, reconciliation and justice. In this paper I focus on an international case study of Northern Ireland, where restorative justice has been used in the community and through the government to address these issues. I explore the concept of “collective memory” and its role in feeding the conflict between Catholics and Protestants over the last 40 years. The disciplinary discussions will explore concepts of forgiveness from …

How Do The Absurd And The Realistic Blend In Comic Strips?, Frank Bramlett
How Do The Absurd And The Realistic Blend In Comic Strips?, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
One of my favorite webcomics is Wondermark, by David Malki !. What fascinates me about the strip is how mundane, ordinary elements get combined with unexpected elements to create a strong sense of the absurd, the fantastic(al), and the unreal. Generally, the physical setting of the strip is Dickensian, often involving not much more than two or three characters in a library, parlor, or dining room. Occasionally, the characters will interact in a scientific laboratory or public place, like on a street corner. Often it’s the language of the strip that creates the absurd. The characters broach topics that …
