Middle School Special-Education Reading Teachers' Experiences Utilizing Study Island Technology To Enhance Male Students' Literacy: An Exploratory Case Study, Roddran Grimes Jan 2012

Middle School Special-Education Reading Teachers' Experiences Utilizing Study Island Technology To Enhance Male Students' Literacy: An Exploratory Case Study, Roddran Grimes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This mixed methods study examined the experiences that four middle school specialEducation teachers had implementing an onlineEducation program called Study Island in their reading classes. The teachers wanted to increase their students' reading decoding and comprehension skills and also wanted to prepare their students for their state's standardized test. Many male students today are underachieving academically and lack motivation to excel in their studies. Because boys comprise the majority gender in most resource classes (i.e., only specialEducation students), this study focused on the male population in order to determine whether an onlineEducation program with a game component such as Study …

Problem-Solving: Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung, James W. Erikson Jan 2012

Problem-Solving: Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung, James W. Erikson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to replicate and expand two experimental procedures that have been fundamental to the understanding of problem solving and rigidity: functional fixedness and effects of Einstellung . Functional fixedness can be described as an instance in which negative transfer occurs and there is perceptual blindness” to the versatility of an object. Einstellung is the tendency to utilize a more complicated and habitually primed procedure at the expense of simpler methods. Results were analyzed to identify individuals resistant to these natural effects and to determine the non-clinical personality factors as assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator …

Discrimination, Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Latino Psychological Distress: A Moderated-Mediational Model, Lucas Torres, Mark W. Driscoll, Maria Voell

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Prior research has found that perceived discrimination is associated with adverse mental health outcomes among Latinos. However, the process by which this relationship occurs remains an understudied area. The present study investigated the role of acculturative stress in underlying the relationship between perceived discrimination and Latino psychological distress. Also examined was the ability of acculturation to serve as a moderator between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress. Among a sample of Latino adults (N = 669), moderated mediational analyses revealed that acculturative stress mediated the perceived discrimination-psychological distress relationship, and that the link between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress was moderated …

Bringing Underserved Staff Online @ Lmu, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Raymundo Andrade Jan 2012

Bringing Underserved Staff Online @ Lmu, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Raymundo Andrade

Librarian Publications & Presentations

One tangible benefit of working at a university is the number of opportunities for continuing education. At LMU, these resources abound for white-‐collar, professional staff. But results from a 2010 survey initiated by the library and ITS indicated that the majority of respondents from LMU Facilities employees were unaware that library and technology workshops (which take place year-round) were offered at all. Through grassroots efforts, Raymundo Andrade and Jamie Hazlitt opened the lines of communication with facilities administration, offered basic technology and English language training opportunities for service staff, and tangibly improved the technology skills and enriched the lives of …

The Impact Of Analyst-Induced Misinformation On The Requirements Elicitation Process, Radha Appan, Glenn J. Browne Jan 2012

The Impact Of Analyst-Induced Misinformation On The Requirements Elicitation Process, Radha Appan, Glenn J. Browne

Business Faculty Publications

Information requirements determination (IRD) is concerned with developing accurate requirements for a proposed system, primarily by eliciting information from users and other organizational stakeholders. In this paper we build and test theory concerning a significant threat to the accuracy of information requirements, termed the misinformation effect. Misinformation is distorted, false, or other erroneous or misleading information that does not reflect the true state of the world or state of mind of the person communicating the information. The misinformation effect refers to the tendency of people to recall misleading or false information introduced to them following an event instead of original …

Organizing For Post-Implementation Erp, Kevin P. Gallagher, Vickie C. Gallagher Jan 2012

Organizing For Post-Implementation Erp, Kevin P. Gallagher, Vickie C. Gallagher

Business Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: The importance of involving subject matter experts (SMEs) in ERP implementations is well established. SMEs' knowledge of business and system processes are critical to conducting gap analyses and configuring enterprise systems. But what happens to SMEs on completion of the implementation phase? Prior qualitative research found that some organizations return SMEs to their old department, which can contribute to knowledge transfer; while other organizations retain the services of SMEs, to assist in ongoing efforts with support and enhancement of the systems. The purpose of this study is to understand post-implementation organizational choices - when SMEs are retained and returned. …

Context Cues For Classification Of Competitive And Collaborative Overlaps, Catharine Oertel, Marcin Wlodarczak, Alexey Tarasov, Nick Campbell, Petra Wagner Jan 2012

Context Cues For Classification Of Competitive And Collaborative Overlaps, Catharine Oertel, Marcin Wlodarczak, Alexey Tarasov, Nick Campbell, Petra Wagner

Conference papers

Being able to respond appropriately to users’ overlaps should be seen as one of the core competencies of incremental dialogue systems. At the same time identifying whether an interlocutor wants to support or grab the turn is a task which comes naturally to humans, but has not yet been implemented in such systems. Motivated by this we first investigate whether prosodic characteristics of speech in the vicinity of overlaps are significantly different from prosodic characteristics in the vicinity of non-overlapping speech. We then test the suitability of different context sizes, both preceding and following but excluding features of the overlap, …

Assessment Of Anxiety In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders In The Schools, Amy Dasaro

Theses

This study surveyed school psychologists to explore rating scales being used to assess for in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in the school setting. Participants were randomly selected from the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP) membership directory. For this sample, the most commonly used rating scales were the Behavior Assessment System for Children-2 (BASC-2; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 2000) instruments for assessing anxiety in students with ASD. The BASC-2 instruments were reported to be most useful for screening compared to treatment planning, progress monitoring, and eligibility determination. Usefulness of the BASC-2 for parent and teacher scales were predicted …

Signal To Noise Ratio Estimation Using The Expectation Maximization Algorithm, Ahmed Almradi Jan 2012

Signal To Noise Ratio Estimation Using The Expectation Maximization Algorithm, Ahmed Almradi

Theses

Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) estimation when the transmitted symbols are unknown is a common problem in many communication systems, especially those which require an accurate SNR estimation. For instance, modern wireless communication systems usually require accurate estimate of SNR without knowledge of the transmitted symbols. In addition, SNR estimation is required in order to perform efficient signal detection, power control, and adaptive modulation In this study, Non data Aided (NDA) SNR estimation for Binary Phase Shift Keying (PBSK) and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) using the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm is developed. The assumption here is that the received …

Picocyanobacteria represented by Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus have an important role in oceanic carbon fixation and nutrient cycling. In this study, we compared the community composition of picocyanobacteria from diverse marine ecosystems ranging from estuary to open oceans, tropical to polar oceans and surface to deep water, based on the sequences of 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS). A total of 1339 ITS sequences recovered from 20 samples unveiled diverse and several previously unknown clades of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus. Six high-light (HL)-adapted Prochlorococcus clades were identified, among which clade HLVI had not been described previously. Prochlorococcus clades HLIII, HLIV and …

Diversity, Distribution, And Expression Of Diazotroph Nifh Genes In Oxygen-Deficient Waters Of The Arabian Sea, Amal Jayakumar, Mamoon M. D. Al-Rshadat, Bess B. Ward, Margaret R. Mulholland Jan 2012

Diversity, Distribution, And Expression Of Diazotroph Nifh Genes In Oxygen-Deficient Waters Of The Arabian Sea, Amal Jayakumar, Mamoon M. D. Al-Rshadat, Bess B. Ward, Margaret R. Mulholland

OES Faculty Publications

The Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), the largest suboxic region in the world's oceans, is responsible for up to half of the global mesopelagic fixed nitrogen ( N ) loss from the ocean via denitrification and anammox. Dinitrogen (N2) fixation is usually attributed to cyanobacteria in the surface ocean. Model prediction and physiological inhibition of N2 fixation by oxygen, however, suggest that N2 fixation should be enhanced near the oxygen-deficient zone (ODZ) of the Arabian Sea. N2 fixation and cyanobacterial nifH genes (the gene encoding dinitrogenase reductase) have been reported in surface waters overlying …

Marine N2 fixing microorganisms, termed di-azotrophs, are a key functional group in marine pelagic ecosystems. The biological fixation of dinitrogen (N2) to bioavailable nitrogen provides an important new source of nitrogen for pelagic marine ecosystems and influences primary productivity and organic matter export to the deep ocean. As one of a series of efforts to collect biomass and rates specific to different phytoplankton functional groups, we have constructed a database on diazotrophic organisms in the global pelagic upper ocean by compiling about 12 000 direct field measurements of cyanobacterial diazotroph abundances (based on microscopic cell counts or …

Manipulation Of Angiogenesis By Cyclosporine-A And Extracellular Matrix Molecules, Raghav Pandey Jan 2012

Manipulation Of Angiogenesis By Cyclosporine-A And Extracellular Matrix Molecules, Raghav Pandey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Angiogenesis is the formation of new capillaries from pre-existing capillaries. Angiogenesis plays an important role in the blood vessel formation required during embryonic development, tissue injury, wound healing, and menstruation. It also plays a major role in tumor progression. We propose a mechanism that links the developmental pathways to a therapeutic pathway. Moreover, we show anti-angiogenic nature of an FDA approved immunosuppressant. Extra cellular matrix (ECM) has an important role in maintaining the shape and structure of organisms and in signaling mechanisms. Two major components of ECM are lumican and Magp2. Investigating their role might help us further link angiogenesis …

Motivation, Need Support And Need Satisfaction In Youth Soccer Players, Erica Lippitt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract: Physical activity levels and obesity rates vary greatly across ethnic groups in the United States (CDC, 2011). One popular way to increase physical activity levels in youth is through youth sport participation, which may be influenced by athlete motivation. Numerous studies have determined motivation levels in youth sport participants, but very little done in comparing levels across different ethnic groups. Identifying differences in motivation levels based on ethnicity can allow coaches and sport administrators to adjust practices and program setups to increase participation and meet needs of player competence. The purpose of the study was to determine if …
