Asthma Randomized Trial Of Indoor Wood Smoke (Artis): Rationale And Methods, Curtis W. Noonan, Tony Ward

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background—Particulate matter (PM) exposures have been linked with poor respiratory health outcomes, especially among susceptible populations such as asthmatic children. Smoke from biomass combustion for residential home heating is an important source of PM in many rural or peri-urban areas in the United States.

Aim—To assess the efficacy of residential interventions that reduce indoor PM exposure from wood stoves and to quantify the corresponding improvements in quality of life and health outcomes for asthmatic children.

Design—The Asthma Randomized Trial of Indoor wood Smoke (ARTIS) study is an in-home intervention study of susceptible children exposed to biomass combustion …

Prepaid Farm Expenses, Jeffrey E. Tranel Sep 2012

Prepaid Farm Expenses, Jeffrey E. Tranel

Rural Tax Education

Farmers and ranchers often pay for feed, supplies, fertilizer, and other inputs in one year and use those items in the following year. They may do so to pay lower prices, guarantee availability, for planning purposes, and/or other reasons.

The Internal Revenue Code allows qualified farmers and ranchers (farm-related taxpayers) to deduct the costs of such purchases in the year that the purchases are made rather than the year in which such items are used. Generally, the deduction for pre-paid farm supplies is limited to 50% of other deductible farm expenses (all schedule F deductions except supplies) for the year.

Oxygen Glucose Deprivation In Rat Hippocampal Slice Cultures Results In Alterations In Carnitine Homeostasis And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Thomas Rau, Qing Lu, Shruti Sharma, Xutong Sun, Gregory Leary, Matthew L. Beckman, Yal Hou, Mark S. Wainwright, Michael P. Kavanaugh, David J. Poulsen, Stephen M. Black

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by depolarization of mitochondrial membranes and the initiation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis are pathological responses to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the neonatal brain. Carnitine metabolism directly supports mitochondrial metabolism by shuttling long chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. Our previous studies have shown that HI disrupts carnitine homeostasis in neonatal rats and that L-carnitine can be neuroprotective. Thus, this study was undertaken to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which HI alters carnitine metabolism and to begin to elucidate the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of L-carnitine (LCAR) supplementation. Utilizing neonatal rat hippocampal slice cultures we …

Farm To School In Mississippi: A Step-By-Step Guide To Purchasing Mississippi Products, Harvard Law School Food Law And Policy Clinic, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

In a state with rich agricultural resources, lasting traditions of family farming, and a climate conducive to year-long growing seasons, why are Mississippi’s school children eating fruits and vegetables predominantly shipped from other states and countries? Farm to school programs that connect Mississippi farmers with schools offer a promising way to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for students while improving the economic viability of local farms. This step-by-step purchasing guide aims to help school food service directors in Mississippi start to purchase locally grown foods to be served in school meals.

Technically Speaking: On Equipping And Evaluating “Unnatural” Language Learners , Joshua Reno Sep 2012

Technically Speaking: On Equipping And Evaluating “Unnatural” Language Learners , Joshua Reno

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

This article compares different communicative trials for apes in captivity and children with autism in order to investigate how ideological assumptions about linguistic agency and impairment are constructed and challenged in practice. To the extent that Euro-American techniques of “unnatural” language instruction developed during the Cold War era have been successful, it is because communicative interactions are broken down into basic components, and would-be language learners are equipped with materials, devices, and habits that make up for their distinct bio/social deficits. Such linguistic equipment can present a challenge to the ideological presumption of a subject inherently gifted with the rudiments …

What Are Deductible Business Expenses?, Dennis Kauppila

Rural Tax Education

Farmers (and all business owners) pay income taxes based on profit. So, it is important to claim ALL legitimate business expenses to not overstate profits. On the other hand, it is illegal to deduct expenses that are not legitimate business expenses.

Repetitive Tracking Control Of Nonlinear Systems Using Reinforcement Fuzzy-Neural Adaptive Iterative Learning Controller, Ying-Chung Wang, Chiang-Ju Chien Sep 2012

Repetitive Tracking Control Of Nonlinear Systems Using Reinforcement Fuzzy-Neural Adaptive Iterative Learning Controller, Ying-Chung Wang, Chiang-Ju Chien

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes a new fuzzy neural network based reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller for a class of nonlinear systems. Different from some existing reinforcement learning schemes, the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller has the advantages of rigorous proofs without using an approximation of the plant Jacobian. The critic is appended into the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller to generate the simple discrete reinforcement signal, which provides a satisfaction about the tracking performance. In addition, the reinforcement signal can be further applied in the weight adaptation rules. Iterative learning components of the reinforcement adaptive iterative learning controller are designed to …

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca Sep 2012

Modeling Complex Systems By Functional Subsystems Representation And Thermostatted-Ktap Methods, Carlo Bianca

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the last two decades the mathematical modeling of real-world complex systems has received much attention. These systems are composed by a high number of interacting entities which are able to express a specific strategy. In order to reduce complexity, the whole system is decomposed in different subsystems that are sets of heterogeneous entities having the ability of expressing the same function. The microscopic interactions among the functional subsystems generate the emerging behaviors that are typical of the complex systems. This paper is concerned with suitable developments of the methods of mathematical kinetic theory for active particles for the modeling …

Migration Of The Swine Influenza Virus -Δ Cluster Hemagglutinin Nlinked Glycosylation Site From N142 To N144 Results In Loss Of Antibody Cross-Reactivity, Ben Hause, Douglas L. Stine, Zizhang Sheng, Zhao Wang, Suvobrata Chakravarty, Randy R. Simonson, Feng Li

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Routine antigenic characterization of swine influenza virus isolates in a high-throughput serum neutralization (HTSN) assay found that approximately 20% of isolates were not neutralized by a panel of reference antisera. Genetic analysis revealed that nearly all of the neutralization-resistant isolates possessed a seasonal human-lineage hemagglutinin (HA; δ cluster). Subsequent sequencing analysis of full-length HA identified a conserved N144 residue present only in neutralization-resistant strains. N144 lies in a predicted N-linked glycosylation consensus sequence, i.e., N-X-S/T (where X is any amino acid except for proline). Interestingly, neutralization-sensitive viruses all had predicted N-linked glycosylation sites at N137 or N142, with threonine (T) …

Armed Violence And Disability: The Untold Story, Hi Sep 2012

Armed Violence And Disability: The Untold Story, Hi

Global CWD Repository

Armed violence has powerful, lasting impacts, inflicting severe injuries and impairments and leaving behind broken families, fearful communities and societies in which violence is the norm. It is a daily fear and fact of life for millions of people, particularly those in low income countries and in the marginalised urban zones of more developed countries.

Persons with disabilities experience heightened exposure to armed violence as a result of various factors, such as exclusion from education and employment, the need for personal assistance in daily life, social stigma, discrimination and communications barriers for reporting violence8 . Armed violence injuries and disabilities …

Long-Term Effects Of Estradiol Replacement In The Olfactory System, Britto P. Nathan, Michael Tonsor, Robert G. Struble Sep 2012

Long-Term Effects Of Estradiol Replacement In The Olfactory System, Britto P. Nathan, Michael Tonsor, Robert G. Struble

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Olfactory dysfunction often precedes other clinical symptoms in chronic neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Estrogen deficiency and apoE genotype are known risk factors in these diseases and these factors also affect olfaction. Therefore we examined the effects of estradiol replacement following ovariectomy on expression of apoE and markers of cell proliferation, neuronal maturation, synaptogenesis and reactive gliosis in the primary olfactory pathway of wild-type (WT) and apoE knockout (KO) mice. Estradiol replacement increased apoE staining in the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers. Estradiol increased astrocyte density and olfactory epithelium (OE) thickness regardless of the genotype. In addition estradiol …

Vocal Expression Of Emotions In Mammals: Mechanisms Of Production And Evidence, Elodie Briefer Sep 2012

Vocal Expression Of Emotions In Mammals: Mechanisms Of Production And Evidence, Elodie Briefer

Communication Skills Collection

Emotions play a crucial role in an animal’s life because they facilitate responses to external or internal events of significance for the organism. In social species, one of the main functions of emotional expression is to regulate social interactions. There has recently been a surge of interest in animal emotions in several disciplines, ranging from neuroscience to evolutionary zoology. Because measurements of subjective emotional experiences are not possible in animals, researchers use neurophysiological, behavioural and cognitive indicators. However, good indicators, particularly of positive emotions, are still lacking. Vocalizations are linked to the inner state of the caller. The emotional state …
